NefariousFennec@reddit
in many first world nations, knowing how to drive and having a license should be considered a basic human function, like cooking and cleaning
fight me if you disagree idc
LankyPen3532@reddit
Don't USA have buses? Like, the word exists at least...
idk_m8_wut_do_u_mean@reddit
bus is a commie construct designed to brainwash the masses.
C_umputer@reddit
Meanwhile, a slow bus evening bus ride after work is actually a nice experience.
ResponsibleStep8725@reddit
Fr, I only ever rode buses to get to school, but if we had courses that went into the evening the bus ride was very relaxing.
If the bus is quiet and rather empty, it's a nice place to unload and have some alone time.
Shonnyboy500@reddit
Most places are rural. Most people who live in cities don’t actually live in the city and instead live about 15 minutes around it. Buses don’t really run that far out of the cities.
Hyperversum@reddit
If your public transportation system isn't able to bring people from 15 minutes outside of the city into it... It just sucks?
Everyday I am reminded that there are very practical reasons why the US are as they are lmao
downvoteaway_idgaf7@reddit
Well, maybe you can rest easy knowing this is a lie. Buses absolutely do go the suburbs. You clowns will fall for anything as long as it's anti-America
GameyRaccoon@reddit
the reason is history, population density, and geography.
Hyperversum@reddit
Oh yeah, but I would still think that the human need to, you know, having a functional transport system wasn't completely killed off. Apparently it is, my bad for thinking people might need to use a bus once in a while lol.
GameyRaccoon@reddit
but we HAVE buses in places where it makes sense. Europe is way way way more densely populated and urbanized than we are, and far wealthier too. Most US states if they were independent would be impoverished.
The_Knife_Pie@reddit
Yes that’s how cities work. I live what, 20 minutes by car outside of stockholm and have at least 10 bus routes that pass by my local stop heading towards the city.
Sec_Chief_Blanchard@reddit
I consider the public transport in Australia inadequate to shit but at least I can get a bus almost anywhere within the greater area of the city.
NyxOnasis@reddit
Australia's PT is actually pretty good, comparatively. Sydney/Melbourne are in the top 15 globally. That's not bad considering the urban sprawl of both.
Taenarius@reddit
I live in a city of 120k population and it can't even manage to run a bus service with busses that run every hour, nor run past 6pm (the routes are actually really solid and cover quite a bit of the city, although it could do with some way to go between outer areas without hitting downtown). Public transit in the US is in a dire state of inadequacy.
UnfoundedWings4@reddit
And theres bus services to a lot of rural areas. Like you can get a bus from Ipswich to esk twice a day
downvoteaway_idgaf7@reddit
Of course we have buses, you fucking idiot. Don't let these loonies with their anti-America agenda fool you. I know you were just going for an easy karma grab, but how do the fuck do you get upvotes questioning if we actually have buses?
Dynablade_Savior@reddit
Only really from city to city, in downtown areas. If you're in the rural areas or even suburbs, you might as well be SOL
StormOfFatRichards@reddit
Yes, but they have spotty service. In my hometown it's 1 hour wait plus transfer if you're not going straight downtown.
TheeFlipper@reddit
Most cities have terrible public transport. I live in one of the larger cities and our buses are unreliable.
LankyPen3532@reddit
Alright. From the comments it seemed impossible that there would be any other means of transportation besides cars. But ok, now I understand.
TheeFlipper@reddit
Dude just needs to swallow his pride and use an Uber. I don't have a license and I use Uber to get around. It costs a pretty penny depending on how far you're going though.
SuperArppis@reddit
Must be some amerikan thing.
King_Bean_@reddit
I have a friend like this. He recently told me he would be unable to even attend my weding because he can't drive to the venue. Honestly we've all tried to get him to get his shit together
ItsMango@reddit
Did you though? The fact that you even bring him up tells me you weren't his friend to being with. I would never shit talk my homies on internet. Fucking poser
Marco_Forelli@reddit
He can’t take an uber or get a ride from someone?
King_Bean_@reddit
It's a pride thing, I think. Imagine a proud Peter Pan syndrome and that's my friend.
We're flying out to our honeymoon from the venue so we can't even drive him because he'd have no way back.
His manual labor job keeps him teathered inside the nearby city too.
C_umputer@reddit
Dude, arriving to an event using an Uber just means a guy is going to drink, tell him there is no shame in that.
GameyRaccoon@reddit
can't drink without a driver's license
Pyrothy@reddit
You can with a state id
StormOfFatRichards@reddit
Did you tell him to get a taxi?
kippy3267@reddit
I mean, does he make decent money or is he just lazy, stubborn and dumb?
StormOfFatRichards@reddit
Yea, don't leave us hanging, are you having your wedding somewhere with no taxi service? If so, your fault, if not, his fault.
King_Bean_@reddit
2 states away, not many taxi services wanna make an 9 hour drive
StormOfFatRichards@reddit
Why can he not fly or take a bus and then taxi from a hotel?
Dark_Knight2000@reddit
That would require some planning and forethought. Not likely traits for someone who still doesn’t have a driver’s license
Thanag0r@reddit
Driving license does not mean much if you don't own a car.
Dark_Knight2000@reddit
I mean it’s still an ID and allows you to rent a car in a pinch. Redundancy is good.
Lots of people for instance have a Real ID drivers license and a passport even though the passport covers the Real ID part anyway. It allows you to get on a domestic plane in the US without a passport.
glasser999@reddit
I can't fathom being a grown adult and not being allowed to drive a car. Crazy.
Got my license at 14 years old.
itshuey88@reddit
yikes. one thing to say - hey I can't drive. can someone else give me a ride. whole other to say - yea nope I can't drive so no way I'll be there. have a good one
Mottis86@reddit
He should be just honest and say he doesn't want to attend.
Wack_photgraphy@reddit
He probably isn't as good a friend as you think he is and doesn't want to go. What does not wanting to drive have to do with getting ones shit together ?
Modern_Ketchup@reddit
Dude i literally just found out tonight that my friend of several years does not drive because he has epilepsy. He literally hangs out 1-2 times a week for years. Makes sense he’s always talking about Uber and Lyfts…
King_Bean_@reddit
It's not that he doesn't WANT to, he CAN'T. He's a 36 year old man this year with no license. He has no career and only works temp jobs in the city he lives right next to.
StormOfFatRichards@reddit
Again, taxi?
Wubwubmagic@reddit
I dunno maybe its just me but reacher came off as written by and for 14 year old boys. The whole thing just comes off as macho cringe juvenile.
SoupaMayo@reddit
I don't need a car, why would it be Anon's concern ?
DeepQueen@reddit
Honestly, when I was a bit younger I thought I was a loser for not being able to drive but now that I'm in a city I realized that having a car is almost more troublesome than just walking/busing places. My aunt makes over 100k a year and she had to drive, pay too much for parking and still take a bus for 20+ mins
JuvieBeans@reddit
Plus all the additional fees. The initial cost of the car, gas, insurance, routine maintenance. Cars are fucking expensive.
MaliciousCookies@reddit
Yeah, but the nice part of owning a (reliable) car is the ability to fuck off whenever and wherever I want. I can be in the Alps in 3 hours or by the sea in Italy in 6.
I'm saying that as someone who still prefers trains/buses if it's cheaper/shorter and got his license fairly late.
SoupaMayo@reddit
Train is definitely cheaper and faster in Fr*nce, but it's a fait point
TacticalMongoose@reddit
I live in LA and couldn’t imagine being able to be a functioning person without having a car
The_Knife_Pie@reddit
Try not living in LA.
TacticalMongoose@reddit
LA is one of the best places in the world to live in if you have the income to afford it lol, I wouldn’t wanna live anywhere else
The_Knife_Pie@reddit
Ahahahahhaa yeah not even close but sure mate.
TacticalMongoose@reddit
Probably hard for a redditor to understand but it’s cool to live in a place where I can catch waves in the morning before work and then drive an hour away to big bear to go skiing over the weekend lol
The_Knife_Pie@reddit
That’s called living basically anywhere on Europe’s west coast. And bonus points, you don’t have to live in the US.
MineCraftIsSuperDumb@reddit
You’re a Debbie downer. I don’t like LA because of the social culture but it’s definitely a very cool and accessible spot to live. Beautiful landscape and beaches and valleys.
The_Knife_Pie@reddit
LA can be cool. LA is not one of the best places on Earth. Virtually every single location in western Europe, and indeed large parts of Eastern Europe, are better by most discernible metrics. And that’s not evens strictly LA’s fault. Being in the US and subjected to the systems and laws therein is a hard hurdle to overcome regardless of how great a city is.
TacticalMongoose@reddit
Brother if you’re saying this and live in the UK your argument is going straight into the dumpster 😂
The_Knife_Pie@reddit
I live in Sweden. The entire UK is also better than LA.
TacticalMongoose@reddit
As someone who’s actually been to both, it definitely isn’t, but usa bad cuz this is Reddit lol
TacticalMongoose@reddit
Portugal and Spain are dope, I’ve lived in Valencia for 3 years. Still moved back to LA where I’m happier and make more money lol
StormOfFatRichards@reddit
I mean that's cool, but it doesn't make up for CoL + LA people
TacticalMongoose@reddit
It depends on the individual, for me, easy access to my hobbies outweighs traffic hour. I also mentioned it’s one of the best places to live in IF you have the income for it. If you’re not making +$150,000 a year or support a family, it would be a different story. I’d also take “LA people” over most US cities I’ve been to lol
StormOfFatRichards@reddit
I've lived in a city with easy access to waves and mountains where rent is less than 500.
TacticalMongoose@reddit
I’ve lived in a city with both where rent was less than 50
StormOfFatRichards@reddit
And why is LA better than that?
TacticalMongoose@reddit
Because it wasn’t in Afghanistan lol
StormOfFatRichards@reddit
Ok cool, still not making a good case for LA
TacticalMongoose@reddit
lol and you’re not making a good case for the latter, all you did was ignore what I said and claimed theres places that are cheaper. I already stated, first of all, this case only works if you’re financially well off. I’ve lived in Buenos Aires and Valencia, both of which were great cities in a similar geographical area with LA (water and mountainous regions). If we’re going off location, BA is about 4 hours away from Mar Del Plata, where the bulk of argentinas best swells are located, and Patagonia, while an amazing place for skiing, requires a flight to get there due to terrain. Argentinas economy was also horrible and tumultuous, and was difficult to find steady clients due to its recessions. Valencia fared better in both regards, economically as well as location wise. However, it’s far easier and more lucrative to work as a CPA in Los Angeles than anywhere in Europe for a wide variety of reasons. I’ve also lived in Boston, New York City, Columbus (Georgia), and Houston. LA is far more preferable than all the cities I mentioned due to reasons listen above, its location is perfect, the culture, people, and food is all better, higher amount of clientele, and upscale areas in LA are far more comfortable to live in than any of the cities I’ve lived in before. Please tell me how my firsthand knowledge is incorrect
Dark_Knight2000@reddit
You’ve just described one reason why LA is not a great place. The transport situation is actual garbage, either drive and burn overpriced gas in horrendous traffic or take overpriced Ubers.
Most European cities have figured it out decades ago. You can still drive but the traffic is way less of a problem because of public transit and walkability.
StormOfFatRichards@reddit
I visited LA and the metro/bus system was fine.
Fyrefanboy@reddit
I live in Paris and i use a car like twice a year, when i'm at the countryside in my parent's house and need to do some shopping or visit the area.
But in my daily life ? It's basically useless.
TacticalMongoose@reddit
Yeah I lived in New York City when I was younger and there was no reason to own a car due to its compact nature and its amazing transit system, I’m assuming Paris is similar? LA is insanely spread out compared to a city like New York or Barcelona, car culture took the city over early in its development. The cities making moves in the right direction, but definitely not walkable lol
Fyrefanboy@reddit
Yes, paris is similar. I rarely have to take the transports for more than half an hour in transport to go where i need to and cross the Seine.
TacticalMongoose@reddit
I’ve never made the trip to Paris but gotta check it out some day
Fyrefanboy@reddit
I'll be happy to make you visit !
patrickstarismyhero@reddit
I consider myself pretty lucky that a lot of things are "close" to my house. My work, my daughters school, both within a mile of my house and we can bike/ walk. But even the closest grocery store is like 3 miles away, it would be like a 45 min walk both ways and to only buy what I can carry back with me? I probably sound fat and lazy but we really dont have everything within walking distance over here. Do you take public transportation if you're going somewhere farther than walking distance?
Fyrefanboy@reddit
It depend. When i have time and the weather is good i'm fine walking 15-20 minutes to the store, even if it would take 5minutes in bus.
Barring a few exceptions, no matter where you live in paris, there are several subway and bus station 3min away from where you live, as well as city bike stations.
You can more or less cross the city from one edge to another in 35-40 min, maybe one hour MAX in the worst case. And you have more or less access to every basic need (pharmacy, bakery, general food/utility store, restaurant, library/newspaper store) in your building block. Some of the most residential areas (like the 1st arondissement) will ask you to walk a little more.
vjmdhzgr@reddit
That last post is taken from an older greentext. I remember that exact line but the time on this is recent. I think the original was a bit better but this is fine.
randomusername1934@reddit

This one is better, thanks
SnakeOilPlagueDoctor@reddit
Glad someone mentioned it. The amount of genuine original content is diminishing every year.
account_552@reddit
are less people using 4chins then? I'd argue that's a good thing, like seeing less homeless people
C_umputer@reddit
Is it the one where guy has no digital footprint, lives in a basement, has only done single trade of $20 or something like that.
Ok_Independence_2630@reddit
I remember it too
Judah_Earl@reddit
Cars are just a money sink.
thatweirdguyted@reddit
Teens, not even a concern. Many have no access to a vehicle anyway.
20's are still no problem, you probably live in a city for school or are saving up. Either way, the bus is fine.
People are generally patient and understanding. But last a certain point, it becomes clear that you're disinterested in getting your shit together. Or unable. Which for the rest of us is basically the same thing.
AFrenchLondoner@reddit
That is a very live-in-a-shitty-public-transport-infrastructure thing to say.
You mustn't be European I take? Maybe Midwest/ west coast America or central to west Canada?
calmdownmyguy@reddit
The sow took place in Louisiana
AFrenchLondoner@reddit
Was the comment I was responding to specifically talking about the show or Louisiana? Or was it making a broad statement?
calmdownmyguy@reddit
Bud, europeans not being able to drive a car is not a flex.
AFrenchLondoner@reddit
Bud, Americans having to drive a car to do anything at all isn't a flex either.
The_Knife_Pie@reddit
What are you talking about
beetnemesis@reddit
Lol just get a driver's license. It's not impressive to be useless.
Blasteth@reddit
It's not impressive either to get a driver's license, they give them to anyone. Just some countries aren't so shit you literally depend on your vehicle to get anywhere.
beetnemesis@reddit
You're right, it's not impressive to get a driver's license- it's a pretty easy thing that a functional adult can do.
I say this as someone who is fully in favor of robust public transportation.
thatweirdguyted@reddit
I agree with you that it shouldn't have to be like that. But it's a simple truth where I live, and I don't personally have the means to build rapid transit systems in all my local towns.
Marco_Forelli@reddit
21-22 is the upper limit for acceptability. Once you graduate college, you’re now a pain in the ass for those around you.
Blasteth@reddit
Any place with a decent public transport service makes anyone able to go their entire lives without a license. This is the most true in European countries or Asian countries like Japan, where actually getting a car is considered a luxury cause the public transport is that good.
ChangingMonkfish@reddit
I like the idea that in every Steven Seagal film where they can’t find any record of him and so assume he was some sort of special forces black ops legend, he was in fact a fat slob living in his parents’ basement.
9lazy9tumbleweed@reddit
Car brained people be like, seriously is the idea of using public transit and saving more money and time so awful to people ?

Only if you're actively enlisted. If your service is all in the past and you're living off benefits then you can still be a NEET

All the everyday stuff is accessible by foot. If not, a metro or bus ticket is ¢30. If something is outside the city a train ticket is less than €5.
Not trying to diminish driving's importance as a life skill but it is far from a necessity.

Literally me.

Just because this person doesn't have a driver's license doesn't mean they don't have the ability to drive. Just don't get pulled over and make sure your tags are legit!
KitchenAd5997@reddit
"Just dodge bro" ahh mindset. You can but i wouldnt reccomend since you'll have a hard time getting if you do get pulled

I've been pulled over without my driver's license a couple times. I just told him I lost it down a storm drain. They let me go every time!

The_Knife_Pie@reddit
Tell me you’ve never had to drive to a destination in a major city. You’re lucky to find parking within half a block of where you want to be, and the parking cost is probably more than a subway ticket to boot.
