Kit hasn't been "introduced" or "new" and it's always used non-binary pronouns on account of... It's a digital fox you can't really check if it has balls or not.
We ain’t exactly hearing Kermit Frog’s perspectives on his own gender now are we? Best we’re going to get is him not addressing everyone calling him a he.
People like you are what give people who genuinely care for REAL human people being misgendered by actual bigots a bad name. You've inserted yourself into a conversation to claim that a puppet character who has shown to be fine with male pronouns, be referred to as a guy, and have never once shown any issue with being called as such might possibly be being misgendered? Kermit is quite literally a male character. I'm sure that you're trying to bait negative karma or some shit given the subreddit you are in, but bait used to be good.
Calling someone a chud when you are claiming a fucking puppet frog is being misgendered is just a pot calling a kettle black. If you genuinely cared for the rights of trans people you wouldn't be doing shit like this and actively making people who genuinely care about real people being misgendered look like crazy fucking terminally online losers
Kermit has been referred to as male by his closest friends and never once argued against being called he/him pronouns or had shown any hint he isn't in the entire decades long history of the muppets so the dude you're replying to is right
Right, but it was was just, and it continues to it. It. Not they/them or whatever the fuck, it. Cause it's a symbol of a fox, not a character in western lgbt cartoon.
No he’s right. I definitely hear more about “those attention seeking trans people” than I do actual trans people who are doing it for attention?
Sorry I ended that sentence with a question mark because I just realized how fucking stupid that sounds lmao. Why tf would some be trans for attention?
I think the idea is that some people will do anything for attention, and they actively make everyone's lives worse by pretending to be the most annoying version of something while claiming to be the average. Of course, this plays into bigots' hands by painting the whole group as annoying attention seekers.
I have actually seen more "trans people bad" posts and comments than actual trans people, so if trans people are begging for attention they need to up their game
I have no horse in this race but genuine I've never met anyone who was trans and annoying about it. Don't know anyone to who it happened personally either. I did have a few run ins IRL with people complaining about woke and trans people. Y'all need to let it go already 😭
Funnily enough (given the whole non-binary thing,) I’ve known several enbies who don’t consider themselves cis but also don’t want to be called trans because they’re not actively transitioning.
When would you ever use "they" for a symbol? It's "it", that's it, no "they". I quess if you were talking about firefox builds, or itterations of the symbol, but that would be plural use.
The symbol is a fox, the fox is a creature, creatures are living beings so it makes more sense to refer to them as "they/them" as they're sapient.
You wouldn't call someone's dog that you'd just met "it" - that'd be weird. Ok, you'd probably just make an assumption and say "he's so cute!" or "she's so friendly!" or whatever, and then the owner would correct you and tell you their name and more about the dog... but if you wanted to keep it general you'd just say "they're so cute and friendly!"
Anyway, as a symbol for a internet browser, it doesn't really matter what the fox is. In situations where you're not sure of the gender or it doesn't need to be specified, "they/them" is better than "it" for something that represents an animal. If it was an object or a robot, sure, use "it". But it doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things... I'm not sure why anyone would even care about gender of Firefox's mascot/logo, and I'm not sure why I bothered writing this comment, lol. I think I just wanted to point out "they/them" is more fitting for someONE, as opposed to "it" for someTHING. But then again it's just pixels... I dunno, man. Keeping things generic, though, I get why they wouldn't want to give their mascot a gender. Like, does duckduckgo (search engine) care what gender their duck is? I'm assuming no. I'm also thinking about how these symbols don't need to be specific, either;👤👥
first i wanna say i agree with you that the gender of the firefox mascot is probably one of the most unimportant things that can possibly exist. but i just want to point out that calling animals "they" as a singular pronoun because they're sapient isn't about sense or grammar or it feeling natural to say, it's just a matter of anthropomorphism.
you wouldn't call a cockroach "they" when you don't know its gender, because you just don't attribute it human characteristics and emotions like you would with a dog or cat. because its not an attractive or desirable creature, you don't even perceive its apparent gender as a factor in its existence. (animals also don't have a gender in the human sense to begin with, but that's another thing)
in the same way, you don't call a dog "it" because you subconsciously try to factor its feelings on the matter (which it doesn't have), simply due to human tendency to do that to things we like. or rather, you assume the owner would disapprove of your attitude towards their dog, putting you in a social situation which you instinctively want to avoid ("You wouldn't call someone's dog that you'd just met "it" - that'd be weird.")
this extends further to symbols, as they themselves anthropomorphize whatever animal they're trying to convey, essentially doing it for you (the firefox looks like it's smiling, it's forming a love heart, etc.) all for marketing purposes of course.
anyways not a dig at you or anything, just some thoughts
The fact you were downvoted is a testament to the fragility of a chud's brain. Apparently the English language is woke now for having different pronouns for creatures and objects lol.
"Just pixels on a screen" is such a shit take. You can go to prison for certain arrangements of pixels on a screen. Those pixels represent things. Stop being obtuse.
that's only true when the things the pixels represent actually exist in reality and can be affected by said representation. the firefox mascot does not. it's just pixels on a screen in the most literal sense
Kit doesn't use pronouns because kit is a fox and doesn't comprehend human language.
Serious though. It's a browser mascot. Those things are nb by default because they're just logos. You're telling me people look at the firefox logo and think "that’s a MALE fox"?
Did the ad agency who did this decide that (1) a very subtle androgynous vibe was needed for their cartoon character to most effectively convey the spirit of a web browser so let’s just go for it and let people complain, (2) staking out a firm position that this character is male or female will somehow alienate someone so let’s do neither, or (3) deliberately pissing some people off and making others feel obligated to defend us is as good of a way to make the media and social media talk about this new character rollout as any, so let’s poke the bear? Who knows.
Another option is they didn’t ever plan for kit to have a gender, so when asked, they just said “idk they’re non binary” it doesn’t need to be some insane psyop where they’re secretly trying to make everyone mad over fictional fox pronouns, they probably just didn’t put thought into it because it’s a drawing of a fox
Another option is they didn’t ever plan for kit to have a gender, so when asked, they just said “idk they’re non binary”
I doubt anyone even asked this explicitly (why would you lol). I bet whoever made that ragebait tweet got triggered by the announcement where they used that pronoun and inferred the rest.
This is a good example of reason 3 in action. The point of hiring an advertising agency is to make sure someone has agonized over what message is being sent by every tiny detail of what you're putting out into the world so your company doesn't look bad. They thought about this and had reasons for making the choice, whatever they may be.
I didn't realize that Firefox's market share was so small that they're trying to expand it by appealing to a much larger furry and transgender community.
I swear these people make it a bigger deal than it is. Mozilla just said something like "Hi everyone, this is Kit, they're a fox!" And then the internet loses their mind over "they're"... They never mentioned anything about gender identity or "their pronouns are...", just "here's Kit, they a fox"...
I think because there's too many like if you nuke a 100k city on a 200 million people country it's quite a loss but if it's a million indians there's a billion more
If the team behind Firefox were furries that would make me use that browser more. There are two kinds of people in tech I really trust: furries and people with a weaponisable degree of autism.
-Company makes losses.
-Supports LGBTQ+ with logo change
-Sales goes up/down
-Change back to a normal logo within months.
*Already happened before*
OMG WHY DO PEOPLE CARE ABOUT OUR MENTAL TRAUMAS!
It's corporate greed allowing this mental disturbedness to 'feel recognised' ...
Iirc all that actually happened was Mozilla referred to Kit using singular they in their promotions, and then some chud account on Twitter extrapolated the whole “Kit is nonbinary and uses they/them pronouns” thing from that and made a ragebait post about it
They love to push identity politics because of the division it creates, it’s a never ending debate that goes nowhere.
Shitlibs eat it up everytime, pissing all over themselves defending the Twitter bird getting bottom surgery or whatever stupid shit it’ll be tomorrow. The class war will never happen, you’re all too fucking stupid for it, and at this point you don’t deserve it.
I know chrome is the normiest browser but firefox is so ugly and blocky, dont even get me started abou edge. Yeah Microsoft i want to see a bunch of ads and news when i want to google something.
To be honest, I don't care at all. It's a mascot character, there's no media it appears in that would be in any way affected by this and if I were in charge of the company and there was evidence that this could generate more profit from either outrage doing free marketing or a bunch of terminally onlines crying tears of joy like a new Star Wars movie was announced, I'd do it too.
It's not about believing in the cause, it's about extracting as much money from those people as you possibly can.
I get the "funny" but oop is talking about privacy and not they/them, loke the contracts between Mozilla and google, and all the Mozilla account agenda crap

If the team behind Firefox were furries that would make me use that browser more. There are two kinds of people in tech I really trust: furries and people with a weaponisable degree of autism.

That guy must be really invested in breeding the digital fox to be upset about their gender

''Why is this important to anyone''
-Company makes losses.
-Supports LGBTQ+ with logo change
-Sales goes up/down
-Change back to a normal logo within months.

OMG WHY DO PEOPLE CARE ABOUT OUR MENTAL TRAUMAS!
It's corporate greed allowing this mental disturbedness to 'feel recognised' ...

Iirc all that actually happened was Mozilla referred to Kit using singular they in their promotions, and then some chud account on Twitter extrapolated the whole “Kit is nonbinary and uses they/them pronouns” thing from that and made a ragebait post about it
Lukababineux@reddit
I have outgrown these debates on internet.
There's no way the whole topic isn't a Big Psyop lol

I mean I don’t really get why this is a problem it’s just a small “hey this character uses these pronouns” it’s not worth being mad over
Ronin_777@reddit
They love to push identity politics because of the division it creates, it’s a never ending debate that goes nowhere.
Shitlibs eat it up everytime, pissing all over themselves defending the Twitter bird getting bottom surgery or whatever stupid shit it’ll be tomorrow. The class war will never happen, you’re all too fucking stupid for it, and at this point you don’t deserve it.

MyDogIsDaBest@reddit
To be honest, I don't care at all. It's a mascot character, there's no media it appears in that would be in any way affected by this and if I were in charge of the company and there was evidence that this could generate more profit from either outrage doing free marketing or a bunch of terminally onlines crying tears of joy like a new Star Wars movie was announced, I'd do it too.
It's not about believing in the cause, it's about extracting as much money from those people as you possibly can.
