What's a concert you went to, not expecting much, and left anazed?

Saw a question about bad concerts, so thought of the opposite...
For me there are 2
The Revivalists concert with The Head and the Heart. They were swapping who opened each night, and The Revivalists were the opener that night. I was a bit bummed... but THATH kicked ass! Huge fan now
Glass Animals - took my kids. Was expecting to be OK... wrong again
Unplaceable_Accent@reddit
The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion maybe. Even though he tried to jump on my fingers
SuspiciousMeat6696@reddit
Worst and best cincert at 5he same time.
Saw Motley Crue on farewell tour in 2015 with Alice Cooper.
Motley Crue was terrible. Sound mix was garbage and performance was emotionless.
Alice Cooper on the other hand was amazing. Sound quality was great and musicianship of his band was exceptional. Theatrics wwre fun. And you could feel he was having a great time. For a guy who had been doing this for 40 years, he could've phoned it in.
But with Crue, it was a huge let down & felt like they just wanted to get it over with.
Majik_Sheff@reddit
Alice Cooper has a reputation for being a gentleman and a consummate professional.
r2killawat@reddit
That's fucked up. I saw Slayer twice on their 2 year final tour. I was never really into them back in the day. They put on a stellar performance! The energy was amazing! And watching the lead singer at the end the end soaking up the applause you could see the appreciation on his face!
65pimpala@reddit
I am so sad I missed this. I thought I've seen them enough. Now wish I would have gone. Probably wont see them on any festivals circuit they are playing now.
r2killawat@reddit
I love how they did a farewell tour but then just kept going! đ Also on those shows I saw I got to see Anthrax who I missed way back and Ministry I also never saw! They just about broke my eardrums! đ¤đ¤
65pimpala@reddit
Went to that tour, and agree. Saw Motley Crue again when they came back, and was much better than expected.
Intrepid_Biscotti945@reddit
Yo! I saw Heart last year and they were BAD ASS!! Still amazing! She did a little acapella and blew me away. Fucking awesome!

Omg that concert was INSANE! I was in second row!!!

1997 Five Points Music Hall

Cheesebrokers
Prince invaded the place at like midnight and played a set. We were like 5ft away from his tiny self and 30 person entourage crammed onto the smallest stage known to man.
No concert will ever top that night, ever.

My very first concert. Parents took me. He was great.
Unhappy_Permit2571@reddit
INXS. I was dragged along and didnât really want to go, I was an indie snob in the late 80s . But they were fantastic, Michael Hutchence was a really great front man and the knew how to play arenas.
Majik_Sheff@reddit
I've always heard that INXS absolutely killed it live.
LastCookie3448@reddit
He was electric live đŤś
spma9498@reddit
They headlined my first festival. They were great.
munkykiller@reddit
Cher, with Cyndi Lauper opening. Got free tickets in the company box, took my wife. Wasnât expecting anything but the free food. First of all, Cyndi Lauper was amazing live. Did like 6 songs. Then Cher, as I learned, can really grab an audience, and make them love her. Insane presence. Best bit was she did a duet, of I Got You Babe, with a video of Sonny, up on a big screen. It was really neat.
Majik_Sheff@reddit
Cyndi never fails to impress and amaze. She puts her entire self into every performance and makes it feel special. She's also an incredible human being who consistently puts social issues at the front of her public persona.  Her induction into the Hall of Fame was one of the best and most touching I've ever watched.
SteveLivingroomCO@reddit
My wife took me to Cher and I was very impressed. She crushed it.
Imasayitnow@reddit
Bob Segar. I mean, you know the guy has some good songs, but dudeâŚso many great songs! And leaves it all on stage!

Van Halen, 1988 Monsters of Rock tour. I know, I know - doood, how could you not expect much from VH? The main reason my buddies and I went to this was to see Metallica, but were certainly not against getting to see Kingdom Come, Dokken, Scorpions and VH.
I guess by the time VH played, we'd been smoking all day, and were pretty crispy fried. I always dug VH, with both Dave and Sammy, but had never seen them live. For whatever reason, leading up to show day, I hadn't thought much about what they'd be like. We were all a bunch of high school thrash kids. Did NOT expect the absolute maniac energy they had. Took me about 2 songs into their set to understand why they had the nickname "America's party band".
LonelyMachines@reddit
Queensryche.
I had to go to a Def Leppard concert in Atlanta during the Hysteria tour. I was young and really trying to impress a girl.
Queensryche was the opening band, and they were AMAZING. Operation Mindcrime had just come out, and they did it for their set. Their playing and sound were spot-on. Total professionals.
Def Leppard was sloppy and sounded awful. I can't blame the sound crew because the opener was great.
I didn't get lucky with Liz, but at least I found a cool new band.
GoWestGirl@reddit
Rage Against the Machine, at Lollapaloozaâs Side Stage, in 1992. There seemed to be a collective feeling amongst the small crowd at the side stage: we get to see this band live before they become famous. They made it to the Main Stage the following year.
Jakeandellwood@reddit
Ya they were the first main stage act in 93 in pittsburgh and we were in the pit against the stage, my ears are still ringing. Always been told to wear ear plugs at a concert, well i say FUCK YOU I WONT DO WHAT YOU TELL ME(16 times) MOTHERFUCKER!!!!

I saw The Struts at a bar on the south side of Pittsburgh about 15 years ago. About a month later they were huge. The bar had a tiny stage but the singer spent most of his time in the crowd. Great energy and interaction with the entire place. I had never heard of them before that.
WasLeftUnsupervised@reddit
My wife took me to see them at StageAE a year or three ago. Yeah, great energy show.
Hedonistic_Yinzer@reddit
In other news, I despise stage AE
fowl_territory@reddit
Not from Pittsburgh, but I'm curious why do you hate StageAE? I went to see Blackberry Smoke with Mike Campbell and the Dirty Knobs there last year, and it seemed like a pretty cool venue. Only complaint is they crammed a lot of chairs on the floor area, but most places seem to do that if they toss out chairs.
AlfaNovember@reddit
I only recently found Blackberry Smoke; wish Iâd known to go see them years ago.
fowl_territory@reddit
Best band around! Managed to catch them three times last year and they were amazing every time!

Went to see Clapton and Roger Daltrey was his opening act. That man sang his ass off and had the energy of a 20 year old. He engaged with the audience and really charmed the crowd. Clapton sat down the whole time and was pretty boring...still cool to see him play though.

And I saw Dylan open for TGD at the Meadowland. Just a few days before Jerry passed. Who the heck does Dylan open for? lol the parking lot was typical GD fun. It was summer time near beginning of July and Bobs out there playing at like 7:30-8 and still very light out. His famous song came on, we were not on the floor. I Looked down and this giant cloud of smoke forms above the crowd and rolls up to the sky while heâs playing. Was amazing. TGD show wasnât that great. Jerry was high and messing up cords and lyrics.

I was dragged to see The Bloodhound Gang groaning about it going to a fest boy shit show until the show started. I had so much fun. Still not a fan of the music, but those guys put on a hell of a show.
elphaba00@reddit
My husband got the idea that we needed to see Kenny Rogers. He was going to be 30 minutes from our house, so what did I have to lose except an evening and money for tickets? Honestly, it was pretty good. It was a couple years before he died and he had to use a stool throughout, but he played all the hits in his catalog, including "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)." He was not phoning it in.

Kaiser Chiefs opening for Foo Fighters.
They knew they were the support act, but they owned that stage the entire time they were on it. Absolutely banging show, they were having the time of their lives up there and really have it horns.
I'm not a fan and don't know much of their material, but they had us eating out of the palm of their collective hand for the hour they got to play. A total screamer of a show that night.
The Foos were also pretty good.

Jewel was in town playing at a high end art fundraiser that we were lucky enough to get tickets to. Iâve never been a fan of hers so my expectations were low. She basically performed an autobiographical spoken word show based on her book with musical accompaniment. It was fucking amazing! She is immensely talented & has lived a very interesting life. Iâm still not a huge fan of her music but I have alot of respect for her.
DJ_3345@reddit
Sara Bareilles. The entire band was really tight. At one point they switched instruments and still kept it on point. The music was much better than her massive radio hit at the time.
hyperdog4642@reddit
Saw both Gabe Dixon and The Secret Sisters as opening acts for other artists (Loggins & Messina and Nickle Creek, respectively). Had never heard of either and enjoyed both more than the headliners - they were both phenomenal!
Also saw The Indigo Girls at a local venue because my friend wanted to - they were, hand down, the best love vocals I've ever heard - sounded EXACTLY like their album.
Lastly, my boss drug a group of us to a Sam Bush concert. I wasn't a bluegrass fan, but he blew me away - incredibly talented musician!

Flesh opened for Mr Big at the Living Room in Providence in 1991. Incredible show with mind blowing energy and rhythm. The opener stole the show.
It's unfortunate to me that Flesh never made it, but they were kind of in a niche (funk metal) coincided with the beginning of the grunge tsunami. They had a reasonably good pedigree too: the singer and guitarist both had siblings that were prominent members in the band, Extreme.

Neil Diamond. Best concert I ever saw. What a showman.

Reluctantly saw Sisters of Mercy in '92. Blew me away. The Dogs D'Amour in '89. Incredible show. Faith No More when I had flu in '95. Felt terrible, SO glad I went. I love it when a gig surprises you and you can infect the room at the same time!

Honestly, I'm gonna have to go with Imagine Dragons. I've seen a lot of shows in my day but I was unaware of the raw, heartfelt advocacy for addicts that I experienced during that show. I can honestly say that I believe any addict could've been one hit away from death but walked out with the greatest sense of hope and confidence. The compassion coming from that mic absolutely blew my mind. I immediately wanted to go see them again before I even got back to the car that night. The positivity and empathy alone was enough to get anyone hooked on this side of humanity.

Muse. No idea who they were when they opened for U2. Bought their CD the next day. Great freaking show.
mrdudsir@reddit
Saw them at Nottingham Rock City as their debut album dropped, they sounded massive for a three- piece. They played Unintended as it was in the charts and Bellamy deliberately played it messy. Kinda cool but dickish at the same time!
paymerich@reddit
Now I think the opposite of Muse when we saw them open for U2 in 2009 at old Giants Stadium. They sounded terrible and the music didnât match the vibe.
chefontheloose@reddit
I saw Rage Against the Machine before they were famous and it was insane. They were so good.

Back when I lived in Tokyo, probably around 2007, a friend offered me a free ticket to a show by a 'mystery' artist from the US. It was all very hush hush and nobody could know anything about it, who the artist was, or that they were in Japan, but they wanted warm bodies filling the seats, so friends of friends of friends of friends were getting tickets.
The show started and Yazawa Eikichi, probably the most famous rock singer in Japan, walks out on stage and introduces:
The Doobie Brothers
No stage lighting or fancy anything, probably borrowed instruments and gear, obviously a spur of the moment show during a visit to Japan for some unknown reason, but they totally rocked the house and it ended up being one of the better shows I've ever seen.

Years ago my MIL was visiting us and she surprised us with tickets to a symphony show featuring Ben FoldsFive. She has a lot of museum and arts memberships so gets tickets as a perk. Around 2002 we won tickets to see the Beach Boys with Bo Diddley opening for them. I didn't expect much (mainly due to their age) but sure enough, they kept the tempo up and the harmonizing great. They even joked that if they knew that they would still be performing at that age the songs would have been in a much slower tempo.
Bo Diddley also did a fantastic job with his set, an incredible entertainer.
Also, in the late 90's one of my best friends had tickets to see Tower of Power (with Heavy Metal Machines opening) and his GF could make it - so I went. It was great to see them (in a relatively small venue - Hampton Beach (NH) Casino and Ballroom) and they put on a great show.

Tori Amos!
The first concert I saw of hers was on the Under the Pink tour. I was already a huge fan of hers, but didnât know what her live show would be like - I was expecting a regular rock/pop concert with a full band and all the show production fanfare, crowds singing along and cheering.
Instead it was the vibe of a formal classical concert. We were in a large concert hall facing a stage with a single grand piano in the center. Nothing else. Crowd was dead silent when she performed, you could hear a pin drop because we were all on the edges of our seats the whole time. Nothing but her voice and the piano filling the air. Absolutely breathtaking.
By the time she was on her fourth or so album her tours had become much more of the rock show variety - big outdoor productions with lots of band members and other stuff going on. To me anyway it felt like all the special sauce was missing or buried, I really didnât love that era of performing. But later she went back to doing the solo piano shows.
erilaz7@reddit
My first Tori Amos concert was like that, too, but on the Little Earthquakes tour in 1992. It was at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco, and since she hadn't quite hit it big yet, there were a lot of empty seats in the place. That certainly wasn't the case when I saw her on later tours!

Amazed may be too strong of a word, but my wife dragged me to go see Duran Duran 15+ years ago at the Borgata in Atlantic City. I've never seen a singer on a big arena tour look genuinely happy to be on stage and performing until Dan Reynolds, he is about the only one I've seen smile throughout the entire thing.
Other big bands I've seen on tour pretty much played at double speed and couldn't wait to get off the stage, but it really was impressive the energy he gave off

Neurosis. It's not really fair to compare, because they are by far my favorite band and nobody did what they were doing in the '90s. There are a few contenders for number three. All those early Jesus Lizard shows make a strong case. The Cramps, Morphine, Man? Or Astroman!, Clutch when they were a hardcore band, Fugazi all put on amazing shows. Kesha.
I listen to a pretty wide range of stuff, but solo pop artists aren't typically my thing. I got tix to her last tour because Scissor Sisters had reunited (with a substitute for Ana Matronic), and they were a bucket list band for me.
I hadn't heard anything from Kesha since her first two singles were everywhere many years ago and had no idea if she would draw a crowd at all. I knew about some of the crap she went through with her old producer or such, and that was about it.
She sold out an amphitheater with a capacity of 12k-15k and has obviously built a huge following of fans over the years. The show itself was outstanding, and I left with a ton of respect for her as a performer.

I went to see Foreigner a couple of years ago with the girls from work. I haven't been to a concert since the 90s, so that's basically the experience i remember.
I was designated driver and I thought I was so cool because I had my hubby's handicap permit, so I figured we'd have great parking. Only.. there were no spots left. I laughed my ass off when I realized why. I was just assuming we'd be surrounded by screaming teens and twenty-somethings because that's what I remenber. But why would we be? Foreigner is a band from MY era, and everyone in my era uses handicap spots! Duh.
Yeah, I left amazed all right. At what a dumbass I can still be, and just how damn old i am. Lol

The Regrettes Lydia Night is such a polished Rock Star and it pains me they broke up. I mean sheâs like my kids generations Deborah Harry. You can tell they pay homage to early Blondie retro sound. Extreme and Living Color both still playing? I saw Extreme open for Winger but Extreme should've headlined!
Turkzillas_gobble@reddit
Extreme was just so much more fun and affecting live than I ever expected them to be, even like...35 years ago when I was just more freshly, easily excitable about Extreme. Total pros, sound was tight, they know just how to engage a crowd. Hell of a show.
Living Colour is full of world-class musicians, might be a bit more nichey at this point, but they're all so incredibly accomplished and it comes across on stage so seemingly effortlessly.

Crosby Stills and Nash. It was 1991 or 92 so I was expecting to see a nostalgic and sweet but past-their-prime musical retrospective.
Nope. They rocked OUT! One of the best concerts Iâve seen. Still grateful I was able to see them together

Medical-Resolve-4872@reddit

Bob_12_Pack@reddit
I went to see the Rolling Stones in 1994 while I was in college thinking they were old and might not be around much longer, reasoning that led me to see many older acts back then. Iâm now a couple of years older than Keith Richardâs and Mick Jagger were then, as well as most of the other musicians I thought were old and likely to retire. I realize now that I was wrong thinking that way, but Iâm glad that I did because it drove me to see as many of those âoldâ iconic bands as I could.

In 1997 a friend of mine bought me a ticket to Pantera. Neurosis opened and then I think Crowbar played.
Neurosis BLEW MY MIND. They played the first four songs off Through Silver in Blood and it was like a religious experience. The light show, the noise, the sheer volume.
The keyboard player had organ pedals mounted up high with foam duct-taped to them. He smashed them with all his strength and the sound of breaking glass would shatter your ears.
The bass player would scream so hard, I could see the whites of his eyes without my glasses.
I got a tattoo of the design that Pete, inc. had persist through the set. It was the only thing I can compare to a religious experience.
Also, the crowd booed them. These meatheads just wanted to mosh and hurt people. Some asshole was in the pit with gloves that had sandpaper glued to them. He got arrested.
My favorite concert.

Les Claypool of Primus, it was just him at a small venue in Santa Barbara in the early 90s. He played like 5 different types of bass, he was fucking phenomenal.

I was at the Green Day show at Woodstock â94 that turned into a mud fight and became the video for âWhen I Come Aroundâ. Was actually bummed because I loved Green Day and still do but they ended the set after just a few songs because the crowd was pelting them with giant grass-mud bombs.
Iconic show tho.

I went to see The Decemberists with my youngest sister YEARS ago- 20? 25? They were playing in a tiny club in Nashville- it was the coolest, funnest, most amazing concert ever. They ended with "The Mariner's Revenge". A couple of guys came out underneath a huge paper mache whale & pretended to eat the band. Epic.

I couldnât decide if it was the Decemberists or Death Cab for Cutie as the band I had heard, thought yeah I will check them out, and was really impressed.
The Decemberists had an accordion solo⌠you read that right, and it was amazing.

Garth Brooks. Went in expecting a full on, inbred, toothless hillbilly show and left as a fan. Ridiculous energy throughout the whole show and the songs were top shelf. GF at the time went to multiple Van Halen and Aerosmith and I owed her one.

About 8-ish years ago I stumbled upon a Gary Numan interview. He was never in my wheelhouse back in the 80s, and I assumed he had faded away.
The interview was cool so I went down a Gary rabbit hole, and was amazed at what I heard. I essentially binged him for days, listening and relistening. Ended up catching a show in Omaha and it was killer.
I actually felt like an ass for missing out on years of Gary Numan and Tubeway Army tunes.

I'm not a country fan by any stretch of the imagination. I really dislike it however, I got talked into going to Garth Brooks about 8 years ago. And I got to tell you he put on one heck of a show, the energy that man had on stage running around and entertaining us all was mind blowing to me, and when I left I actually became a Garth Brooks fan. Never in a million years would I have thought that I would be a fan of a country artist. But he was absolutely fantastic! I'm more of a metal guy so that's why country music never really interested me.

U2 at the Sphere. Expected an old washed up ban; however, it was an impressive visual and musical experience.
HabitantDLT@reddit
The Sphere is an experience that is so hard to describe. It's on some other level than pretty much any other concert experience (at least, my own few hundreds). I find whenever I (attempt to) describe it to someone who hasn't been, they look at you almost dismissively, as if you are talking out of your ass and exaggerating.

NIN opening for Peter Murphy, Murphy was great but NIN would have blown any band away that night RPM, Toronto, ON, Aug 1990.
frizzleisapunk@reddit
I saw that tour in Wisconsin! NIN kicked ass, but Murphy wasn't feeling it. I don't know what actually happened, maybe he was sick?? In any case, he ended up returning to summerfest soon after as an apology because he felt it wasn't a good show.
Edu_cats@reddit
Yes saw that tour in St. Petersburg FL. We got there a little late for NIN . Peter Murphy was good that night.
He has a long history of drug problems apparently so maybe that was it for your show.

Blur in '97. Went in only having known them for the WOO HOO song....but then EVERY song was fucking better than that. It was like seeing the Beatles if you had never heard of them and thought they only had one decent song, and discovering a rich catalog of songs that were great even if you had never heard them.
The band was great, oozed charisma and just had that star quality. I went the next day and started buying their CDs.
"This is a low" still might be my favorite concert closer by any band. Weird tho, you gotta be there to really feel how epic it is. Doesn't really come across on video.

Blue Rodeo Molson amphitheater August 2004.
Figured it'd be a decent show...I'd seen them before.
My bestie and I went and scored floor seats. There was a massive space for dancing if you wanted so we did...saw some big dudes just standing around some guy. It was Woody Harrelson. We smoked a joint with Woody then they started singing lost together just as a thunder storm rolled in over the lake. Greg told everyone to turn around and enjoy the show... lightning over lake Ontario...couldn't see the lake but the light show was amazing.
Best show I've ever and will ever see.

The Rolling Stones in either 2016 or 2017. I only went because my friend liked a guy who liked the Stones so I suggested we all go to try to get them together. We sat in the worst, most horrible nosebleed seats. But OMG, it was one of the best concerts Iâd ever been to and I didnât even really know many of their songs. I would go see them again in a heartbeat and pay for seats way closer to the stage, they were that good.
Oh, in case youâre wonderingâit worked â my friend and the guy ended up together but sadly, only for a few months. My friend wanted to cut way back on partying and focus on a career (which she did and sheâs very successful now). The guy just wanted to lay around and smoke weed all day so they were very different in that respect.

For me, this is when Tracy Chapman opened for 10,000 Maniacs in like 87? Her self-titled album had just, or was about to drop, and we'd never heard of her.
That was such an amazing night. Even I realized that the opener had completely out shone the headliners, and it was one of the first 3 shows I ever saw, and I'm pretty sure it was the first I drove myself to.
*but like, because I chose it. my parents took me out to music at the state fair and stuff. I grew up seeing the beach boys and Gladys Knight and the pips.

I don't know if amazed is the right word, but The Black Keys. Friend's wife bailed, so I went with last minute. I had never heard of them. The Prayer tour for the Disintegration tour. The band came out and blew doors for 2.5 hours. They basically played the entire Disintegration album and just about every song from the Staring at the Sea singles album. Mind was blown. Total fan after that.

Needless to say, my expectations were not high, but hey, my gf liked him so what the hellâŚ

Saw Joe Cocker open for Stevie Ray Vaughan, had low expectations because we figured he was just going through the motions. The Bee Gees. I saw them in the late '80s, when they weren't cool, zero expectations, and my goodness were they pros, they played all their hits - album quality - gorgeous harmonies, voices filled Madison Square Garden. My aunt surprised me, a friend, and my parents with tickets to a Peter Gabriel concert in 1986; me and my BFF sat in the first mezzanine, and my parents and aunt sat in the cheap seats.
My BFF and I were thrilled, my mother was also intrigued (I'd been playing So a lot around the house and she liked it). My father, however, was not looking forward to it; he preferred more bluesy stuff. The only thing of Peter's that was on the radio at the time was "Don't Give Up" and he hated it.
When we met back at the car after the concert, the rest of us were talking excitedly about everything as Dad leaned against the car, arms folded, looking at the ground. We chattered on for a few minutes about how awesome it was. Then, when there was a lull in the talk, Dad finally looked up at us all and said only :
"That was fucking GREAT."
It was the first time my friend and I heard my father drop the F-bomb in our lives. It made such an impression that it's still a touchstone core memory for us both 40 years later. :-)

I've since become a semi fan of the band, though not the above mentioned songs, and last year my daughter (now 26) and I flew to San Diego to see them again.
