A New Bill proposes Federal Age Verification on any Operating Systems in entire U.S

This bill was introduced by
Rep. Josh Gottheimer, Democrat from New Jersey. And is co-sponsored by Elise M. Stefanik,
Republican from New York.
The full text of the bill has not yet been made publicly available
sihtotnidaertnod@reddit
Part of the problem is that I still don’t understand why this is problematic despite having just read several comments ITT. I’m fairly tech savvy, and extremely savvy compared to the average person in the US. This is a losing battle because no one is explaining how this is problematic in an accessible, succinct way.
arkham1010@reddit
why the hell do they need age verification for operating systems in the first place? What problem are they trying to solve?
Yeuph@reddit
It's a mix of well-meaning idiots and less-well-meaning intelligent people
They want different things but they're both pushing for it
Will_and_Worried@reddit
NONE of these people are well-meaning. They couldn't be anymore thankful that you believe them to be morons rather than the scheming monsters they really are.
SutekhThrowingSuckIt@reddit
Meta is actively lobbying for it because of their trial regarding how they targeted kids and caused them psychological harm on purpose for engagement. They want to force Apple, Microsoft and Google to be responsible for age restrictions rather than taking responsibility. They don’t give a fuck about user freedom, privacy, etc. or desktop linux existing.
akio3@reddit
Per other threads I've read: big tech and social media want to pass the buck on age verification. If the OS has to verify age, then it's no longer their problem if they advertise to kids, let underage kids open up accounts, etc: they're just acting on what the OS told them. I've read that Meta is a huge sponsor/lobbyist behind these bills.
PeeOnAPeanut@reddit
The OS should do it though. If the world has to have age identification (and it seems like it does fine most countries are going this way), Proving age to the OS (one entity) is FAR better than proving age to multiple entities (Discord, Facebook, WhatsApp, TikTok etc).
Would you trust your ID with one entity, or with several? Lesser of two evils.
Initial-Return8802@reddit
But who's going to store it? A hobbyist Linux distro is not going to want the headache of storing/verifying ages
MBILC@reddit
3rd parties, they will use like Persona, or some other one, which has had data breaches already..
MBILC@reddit
The issue is who will they use to verify your age? You can bet it will be a 3rd party, like Persona, which will likely feed your data into Palantir, or get leaked from a breach, as several verification companies have had massive breaches lately.
So now to use an OS, not even to surf the web, I have to provide my age and have it verified? Hell no..
How will this work in enterprise settings? Is this only end user systems? What about server OS's? or kiosk terminals where you have multiple people accessing a system?
HateHumansLoveDogs@reddit
It will be palantir
MBILC@reddit
Persona is the system used for verification, but it does likely feed into Palantir, as it is the same co-owner for both.
And you are right, why trump wanted to get all the departments into Palantir, since it already is used around the globe..
Nelrene@reddit
None of those sites should have age identification either. Parents should be doing their jobs and at least somewhat watch their kids and teach them about good internet use.
HateHumansLoveDogs@reddit
Amen this is ridiculous, my parents gave me a dumb flip phone till i was 18. Our pc was in the family room. They monitored what we did, and you know what we turned out better for it. Parents do your freaking job, its not anyone else's responsibility. Dont want to bother raising kids then dont have them!
yo_99@reddit
Fuck this shit. I would sooner migrate to I2P.
xternal7@reddit
The OS should, at most, give you a date picker, without actual verification.
Then, it's parents' responsibility to fill that out (or not, if they so desire).
PeeOnAPeanut@reddit
I don’t disagree. But that’s not the way the world is moving.
mrjackspade@reddit
This flies in the face of the narrative that's been spread by Reddit for months now that all big companies want to age verify you so they can steal your data and sell it to each other for profit, and it's insane seeing the narrative shift so fast.
smile_e_face@reddit
I mean...they want to do that, too. The two aren't mutually exclusive. If it just stays as "I'm over 18 I promise," then they pass the buck to operating system makers and users. But, if it progresses to actual age verification, then suddenly their users' social media accounts are now linked to their government IDs and related systems. Either way, they win.
Possible_Bee_4140@reddit
As evidence, Meta had to pay Brazil something ridiculous like $500 million because of this exact issue. They’re pushing this so that they won’t be open to having to pay that fine the US too.
Nelrene@reddit
The "problem" is people have control of their computers. They want to stop people from going to web sites they don't like such as one that are pro LGBT+ and installing non approved programs such as video games.
cake-day-on-feb-29@reddit
Zuck wants to vacuum up childrens' data without worrying about silly things like "COPPA" or "CSAM", so he's trying to get stupid age verification levels put into the OS so that everyone will just click "I'm over 18" and he can wash his hands of any wrongdoing.
Rest assured, the fact that the laws do not require any kind of actual verification, simply some user input, is a feature and not a but. He wants children to lie about their age, and then still use his platforms, all while the OS tells Facebook the user is over 18.
FriendlyNeighbor345@reddit
To steal your information and monitor you.
themirrazzunhacked@reddit
Liability and spying
basicseamstress@reddit
verify users for ad money. and for surveillance.
wooq@reddit
Corporations don't have enough data tied to personal demographics, and the government doesn't have enough data tying your online activity to your personally identifying information. It makes it hard to surveil you and market products to you. So that when they change the law to make something illegal that wasn't before (for example, some things that the current US conservative political movement wants to outlaw and has already started passing laws against in some states or enacted through shadow policy: looking for or posting information about LGBTQ+ issues, criticizing party politicians, criticizing Israel, watching pornography, participating in discussions about anti-government protests, not worshipping the right god, etc)
They say it's to protect the kids or something, but that's a lie. It's to open the door to the dismantling of democratic rights, while they still have control of all three branches of government.
These bills are being pushed by billionaire CEOs of tech corporations whose business is surveillance and data mining. There are theories about the end goal, none of which involve freedoms for people who aren't part of the would-be ruling class.

The problem is you, and having freedom.
UltraCynar@reddit
Meta wants to ignore responsibility
Actual__Wizard@reddit
No text available yet, but previous schemes to do this have consistently created a totally unnecessary system that would be an extremely lucrative business for the companies that operated it.
XenoZoomie@reddit
How would you even enforce this on Linux ? Could you not just remove the files for this component if it was ever implemented?
blu-bells@reddit
What about stuff like car OS's? Do smart fridge OS's need to verify ages too?
Actual__Wizard@reddit
The only way it could work is if the remote system passes you kind of encrypted token, that when you visit sites, you pass the token that was given to you, to the site, and then that site talks to the age-auth server.
hitsujiTMO@reddit
It's Meta is the one who's pushing for this. They knew they would eventually be forced to add age gates to FB, Meta, and verify users actual ages.
They know for them to implement it, it would be a huge money sink, a source of backlash from users and it will never work right
So they lobbied the US to push the problem on to the OS and software distributors as a them problem. Meta doesn't have to deal then with lawsuits from parents of teens and young children finding ways to bypass the age gates.
Legitimate-Draw-2235@reddit
yeah it's ridiculous. If Tinder or Pornhub or whatever other app/website is making money from adult content, then they are the ones who should be responsible for verifying the age of their customers.
This is deliberate shirking of responsibility.
steakanabake@reddit
fuck no i dont want either of those sites doing age verification.
NighTborn3@reddit
That's the point. They would go under and they don't want to.
steakanabake@reddit
do you trust pornhub holding on to any form of your PII?
HateHumansLoveDogs@reddit
Then why go to sketchy sites like that? Are people so addicted to porn that they cant just walk away lol?

NighTborn3@reddit
Fuck no
mtgguy999@reddit
So I’m totally against age verification on principle, but I do see the logic in having to verify once and not give my identity data to 100 different sites and apps half of which will leak it.
Nelrene@reddit
Here a idea. Have it so you don't have to give that kind of data to sites and apps that don't need that info.
Ccracked@reddit
So you give it once to the OS, and everyone has access?
mrjackspade@reddit
There's a difference between everyone having access to a picture of my ID and everyone having access to a boolean flag or enum representing whether or not I'm over 18.
MBILC@reddit
The issue is the OS will likely use some 3rd party provider as well, which several have been breached already. Or Persona will push to be the solution, which feeds into Palantir likely...
I should not have to provide ID to use my OS, period. And I do not use any sites that require me to upload ID either as there are always alternatives.
meltbox@reddit
It’s also going to be a method which unintentionally identifies children online via a flag. There’s a serious problem right there with that.
By claiming to keep kids out of stuff it’s becoming a side channel attack on targeting kids.
The whole idea is idiotic.
crb3@reddit
Yeah, now that we know what the Pedo-In-Chief and his enablers "think of the children" (as prey, that's what), this plan for easier targeting is unforgivable.
Delta-9-@reddit
Fuck, I hadn't even thought of that, but you're absolutely right. This would actually make children more vulnerable, not less.
Of course, they don't actually care about whether kids are vulnerable or not. This is about Meta and friends avoiding costs on the one hand, and further normalizing the surveillance state on the other. This benefits big corps and fascist-adjacent governments at the expense of children and privacy, and that's the whole point.
IncidentalIncidence@reddit
you're being downvoted but I do agree with you, if there is going to be any sort of age verification at all I would rather have it done cryptographically via the ID than by uploading passport scans or whatever to random startups
CaesarNaykid@reddit
That’s what I was thinking Like a TPM module
But they’re probably thinking more like a RealID
Legitimate-Draw-2235@reddit
yeah I can see that point, but shouldn't that just be a separate plugin like a government administered tag/id or something that one can plug in separately to the operating system. I don't see why it should be tied to the OS.
SanityInAnarchy@reddit
It backfired in California. The age attestation law that got passed explicitly says they're still liable if they know a kid is underage, no matter what the OS says.
unmoisturized-@reddit
The crazy thing is Netchoice and civil rights groups and OS developers are going to have a field day destroying these obviously blatant violations of our constitutional rights in court. They are failing at the state level and now they are trying to push it federally.
MBILC@reddit
Which one would hope the big OS makers would of fought back, but does not seem like they will either...as now it is another data point to collect on users for them to abuse.
FreelyFound@reddit
OpenAI too.
CondescendingShitbag@reddit
Funneled literally billions of dollars into their failed "Metaverse" garbage, but can't spend a cent on better content moderation.
Think_Positively@reddit
Every stock and crypto platform already has KYC, so the process is already mature. It just needs to be ported to social media, and while that won't be cheap, it's probably nowhere near as egregious as OP quote implies.
I bet it's more about trying to create a loophole which will allow the various dystopian bot and propaganda farms to continue to fuel traffic. If KYC is active at the OS level, then I bet they find a way to keep the bot accounts flowing. If each account needs its own KYC, then this process probably gets far more complex.
lightmatter501@reddit
Part of this push is also to de-anonymize the internet. The rich and powerful hate that we can criticize them without any fear of consequences here, and after occupy wallstreet they started trying to make sure that can never happen again.
EmbarrassedHelp@reddit
Meta is pushing for it alongside OpenAI, Age Verification Industry lobbyists, lawmakers from the United Kingdom, the Australian eSafety Commissioner, and "child safety" organizations.
newaccountzuerich@reddit
Saves them some 50bn in fines for knowingly allowing kids use adult services
Actual__Wizard@reddit
Makes sense, push their costs off to somebody else, while they maintain the same software.
Randolph__@reddit
This is the best way to do age verification. You do it once per device and websites call an API for verification.
To be clear I am against age verification. This is just the best way to do it.
HateHumansLoveDogs@reddit
I just want to know wtf are parents doing? Its not societies job to raise your freaking kids! Take away their smartphones watch what they do on the computer is that so freaking hard?
Q-Ball7@reddit
This concept is incoherent in the face of the Right to Read.
The main problem with forcing terminals to do attestation is that the way it's implemented on them denies me that right.
By requiring it be service-by-service (though why this is something that lawmakers believe can survive a 1A challenge, I don't know) I still have a choice not to use those services.
By contrast, I don't have a choice not to use an OS, which means with the inevitable future remote attestation that will be demanded should this be allowed to stand will destroy my ability to even use a computer privately.
Actual__Wizard@reddit
I understand completely, but we don't have a right to privacy in the US.
bobthebobbest@reddit
Yes we do. It was articulated in Griswold v. Connecticut (1965).
Actual__Wizard@reddit
Again, I don't like the decision, but wasn't that effectively over turned recently?
bobthebobbest@reddit
No.
Actual__Wizard@reddit
Okay well, again I'm not a legal expert, but I've been following politics for 25 years, so I'm not really satisfied with the explanation of "no."
bobthebobbest@reddit
You’ve given literally no evidence for why we should believe Griswold was overturned. If you’re referring to the decision in Dobbs, the relevant evidence that Griswold was not overturned was that the majority rejected Thomas’s concurrence that said Griswold and other “substantive due process” cases should be reevaluated.
Actual__Wizard@reddit
You are legitimately being rude. This conversation is over.
Q-Ball7@reddit
You misunderstand: it's not this directly, it's specifically the freedom to write that's under attack.
Compare "you must register yourself with the government to be permitted to use a printing press"; it's an obvious case of compelled speech.
Actual__Wizard@reddit
Oh, that works actually!
duiwksnsb@reddit

CondescendingShitbag@reddit
I'm going to go out on a limb and say the 6-3 conservative-led SCOTUS has emboldened a lot of these assholes to try and shove through as much questionable shit as they can while Roberts is around to ignore the Constitution and set new precedent.
AssPennies@reddit
If by age gated you mean PARENTS SHOULD FUCKING TAKE CARE OF THEIR OWN GODDAMNED KIDS then yes, I agree.
Don't enable dystopian governments with the fucked up "bbbbut think of the kids" because ultimately very much not about the kids by the people who want to implement this.

Isliterally1984@reddit
I mean, they would have to introduce it all over again after midterms. And a ram through might not work if there’s not enough people there.
Of course it isn’t a 0% chance though, Govtrack, which is typically pretty consistent in its methodology for predicting these things, says it has a…1% chance of making it through. https://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/119/hr8250

absolutely correct. This wasn't a debate topic anywhere.
HateHumansLoveDogs@reddit

Y'all talking about this project 2025 stuff are starting to sound like those Agenda 21 conspiracy theorists from the early 2010s.
DuskGideon@reddit
yesh thats why california is leading the charge with their own bill on this, and why a democrat introduced the bill in the senate.

Gamiac@reddit
And then what?
Gamiac@reddit
I don't, but I live elsewhere in NJ and I want to help get people organized in NJ-5 (Gottheimer's district) to rally against this.
AutistcCuttlefish@reddit
I'm from NYS, you'd have a better chance of NYC becoming its own state than voting out Steffanik. She's got a ton of support and her district routinely votes for her by insanely large margins. She's so comfortable in her district that she's willing to belittle voters who disagree with her views.
You'd be better off focusing efforts on a more competitive district or a politician who isn't so hardheaded that they make diamonds look like wet tissue paper.
ItzSwirlz@reddit
im remembering, our primaries are in June 👍
Bob4Not@reddit
I doubt they're just asking for a birthday input, they probably are going to really require ID verification. They're going for full internet censorship and control.
I_HAVE_THE_DOCUMENTS@reddit
It's a foot in the door thing. The important part right now is to get the expectation and infrastructure in place so they can start tightening the vice over time.
aliendude5300@reddit
The actual bill text isn't available yet. I really hope it's just a birth date input.
FriendlyNeighbor345@reddit
I hope it fails before it even gets written.
rebellioninmypants@reddit
How the boundaries are moving in real time - the study
aliendude5300@reddit
If this law passes in the US it poses an existential threat to desktop Linux. Shits fucked. Geoblocking the United States isn't a good idea, since a huge number of devs live here.
rebellioninmypants@reddit
Which I believe is one of the things they want to accomplish. In addition to removing small devs from the game, and having everyone rely on government-owned/approved, big tech platforms/apps/websites/etc. Ofc on government approved OSes, preferably phones because those generate the most data about users.
Mandatory mic/camera 24/7 streaming to big tech/government/police by 2028. Ofc to preventatively protect children
trickman01@reddit
Honestly that's still too far.
xternal7@reddit
However, if it's a birth date input field:
Ideally, we'd outright ban smartphones until high school. Age verification isn't very necessary when under-15s don't have a convenient access to the internet 24/7, any time and anywhere.
aliendude5300@reddit
Eh.i don't love it but if we have to have some sort of age check, I don't mind the honor system. Keeps distros "legal" where it'd otherwise be problematic for them to ignore the law.
Fearless-Assist-127@reddit
Even if it is to start with, it won't stay that way. This is just the first shortening of the leash. Once there is a principle that this sort of thing is OK, and the basic mechanisms are baked into the OSs and stable, then the scope will be expanded.
EmbarrassedHelp@reddit
The text says "verify", which means unacceptable privacy violations.
aliendude5300@reddit
So did the CA one which isn't bad, just honor system birth date entry.
Bob4Not@reddit
I hope so too but im not counting on it. The vibes are different and more aggressive now. Govts are fighting the screws everywhere

This government overreach is getting so out of hand. They're proposing something similar here in Canada but for social media. Will basically be same result. Complete loss of anonymity and privacy. Not that we have much these days, but they are taking even more of it away all the time. This will most likely require digital ID which will be the final nail in the coffin on freedom. Digital ID will allow them to pretty much have full control over your life. Even more control than they already have. It's like they read the book of Revelation and said "this mark of the beast thing sounds like a great idea, lets do it!".
MBILC@reddit
Considering how Canada seems to want to bend over for WEF/WHO and other things the EU has, Digital ID along with CBDC I am sure will be proposed soon as some savior for us all, as they are pushing in the EU with the corrupt group over there.
The people saying they would approve of Canada joining the EU in some form clearly do not read the news about what is actually happening with in the EU.
RedSquirrelFtw@reddit

tdammers@reddit
Anonymity and privacy on commercially run social media has been a farce from day 1.
RedSquirrelFtw@reddit
Well there's still some options to at least get SOME level of privacy. You can separate your "IRL" accounts from online accounts by using different names, email addresses, even proxy or VPN. Use ad blockers, and other security extensions etc.
But once they roll out age verification now you are 100% exposed as that will require linking your actual identity with each website and it's also extra burden for website operators to have to track and store all this info.
We should be fighting for LESS privacy infringement instead they keep adding more and more.
MBILC@reddit
This, you can at least control what you put out there, if your OS now is being the source, and with the track record of say Windows telemetry... what other data will be sent out when it is not supposed to....

JOHNNY6644@reddit
really damn!
iv watch a lot of level1 techs an how wendell an other solid Linux techs have said an described in detail how thw this wont really protect young kids at all an is more about gov monitoring an intrusion , an that a kid safe of with a kid safe whitelist
built-in to the os like a limited user function thats free to download would be better an would oppose a adult version thats like current Linux that could require some sort of one time over 21 id an fee (you know like to buy booze) verify would be better because
honestly i wouldn't mind paying 100$ one time or once every 10 years for a fresh copy of Ubuntu or Kde as ther defiantly more worth it then windows
an a 10$ min fee to install a existing copy of the of adult version on a new or other device that would require another possible one (as in not constant monitoring) over 21 id check as long as the cash went direct to the Linux os companies
but i doubt either political party without anyone who actually know about this stuff an linux could ever do this compliantly
aliendude5300@reddit
If you're fine paying for Linux, go make a donation. That said, Linux isn't for sale and won't be. Part of its charm is it's not owned by the corporations but the people.
JOHNNY6644@reddit
yeah i know i was just thinking that the kind of id check i was suggesting that the gov always wants some fee so i thought it should go to the linux os's as part of the deal
anto77_butt_kinkier@reddit
Yeah, honestly I'm more left leaning, but I think both us political parties are kinda ass tbh.
I'm of the opinion that our government should take maybe a tenth of a percent of our military budget (which would work out to be aproximatly 980 million USD), and hire a team of a few thousand people to develop and maintain a system where the public can vote for any major law, rather than the people electing a representitive and hoping that dumbass acurately represents them.
That will never happen though, because the people who can make that law are the people that said law would be negatively impacting.
Also I would like to admit that my idea is stupid, but my general point is that the US has the resources to try and improve these systems, but it doesn't. My idea specifically isnt great because it creates a single target of multi-trillion dollar companies to try and manipulate, and because it consolidates power/removes balancing middle men, and could give the people twords the top even more power. I generally just think there is some form of better system that we could come up with if anyone influential enough cared to try.

The one thing they can agree on is controlling a population unconstitutionally.
TripleSecretSquirrel@reddit
Seriously, I’m so fucking pissed off that they can never agree on anything that’s actually good for the people and the country.
This and the striking down the bill that would have publicly released the records of congresspeople’s sexual assault settlements.
ptoki@reddit
Nah, some folks will call you symmetrist when you mention that.
FaultyPly@reddit
People will make a lot of excuses to not look themselves in a mirror and be critical. Politicians and corporations know this, and they spend a lot on marketing to keep unity from happening.
TripleSecretSquirrel@reddit
I’m very much not a symmetrist, but there is a certain amount of functional symmetry though when Republican officials do all the worst things I can imagine and the Democrats officials just sort of wring their hands and write strongly-worded letters.
Obviously some Democrat (and Republican) officials are better than others and some are doing a lot, but far too many of the established Democrats are busy doing shit like this and yelling about how the unaccountable secret police force just needs to be more well-trained.
ptoki@reddit
I think any reasonable person these days who is seeing what is going on and remembers last 20-30 years must be symmetrist.
Yes, one or the other parties have differences but usually those differences are irrelevant for the grand scheme of things. The foundational aspects are usually not challenged by one party once the other set it in.
I see it in us and canadian pilitics, in many european countries too.
Parties usually pick something crazy but not really that crucially important and do a fight show about it. But even that is untouched once party at power changes. Trump is small exception of this rule and in a bad way anyway - nothing better happened for people since long time despite party changes at helm.
And as I mentioned, its not onlu US, many other places are like that.
WalkingEars@reddit
Many Democrats are bought and paid for by corporations, so their "left wing" reforms are gutted from the start so as not to alienate their CEO donors. There are meaningful differences between the party platforms that do matter, but there's also a reason for democrat spinelessness and it goes beyond individual-level timidness.
dvtyrsnp@reddit
no, these people genuinely think they're protecting children. they truly do not understand the effects of the legislation they're proposing.
that's why it is important that people keep hammering the people proposing these bills with the factual adverse effects of legislation like this.
Kelvin62@reddit
I disagree. They are using child safety as an excuse for restricting personal freedom.
dvtyrsnp@reddit
This comment represents a fundamental misunderstanding of what's going on here.
There are two groups that are getting lumped together. There are the entities like Meta that are doing as you say, but there is another group that correctly identifies that there is a pretty severe problem with children, social media, and gambling that is going on. This second group just isn't really informed on why these proposed age verification laws are a problem.
We should be appealing to and informing the second group in order to reach a real solution. Conflating the two and labelling this as a simple "fighting for freedoms" argument is actually damaging for us.
RunLikeHell@reddit
You are right about who to appeal to but if they are so ignorant of the technology then whom do you think is pushing for this?
Sinaaaa@reddit
I'm sure you are right, but I think without protesting this will never work. Even if you convinced the 10-15 naive people of congress that know nothing about tech & life, even then this would go through. It's hard to be optimistic about this, I don't see Americans holding large protests about this, so it's almost set in stone already.
Nelrene@reddit
If they really gave a shit about protecting children they would be working day and night to get Trump thrown in jail.
Darth_Caesium@reddit
Most of them know what they're doing, they're just authoritarian fucks who genuinely want to control the populace.
CombinationKey8557@reddit
Not really. You overestimate how much thought goes into this stuff.
Step 1. Get some "for the children" movement going
Step 2. Companies that would be impacted panic and try to dump the responsibility on someone else.
Step 3. We get dumb bullshit like this that people whose understanding of the issue ends at Step 1 will sign on to.
grathontolarsdatarod@reddit
No way from me.
They are expected to act like adults.
Saying they are putting thought into things bring the system into disrepute and excuses actual thoughtful actions.
Like the very deliberate and thoughtful action to pass a law that attacks rights.

You're right to demand competency. This thread has just assumed incompetency from the start.

At some point, just no.
They have thousands if not more people telling them this is the wrong way to go. People who are recognised experts. Yet, they persist.
At some point the "they don't know any better" just doesn't work. They do know better. If they really don't, then they aren't "conscious" enough to be part of a normal society and they should not be in any position of power whatsoever. There is a level of stupid where the state just takes over for you for your own sake because you're genuinely so dumb you might end up harming yourself and others in major ways. When you're doing this badly, you do not get to keep your position of power, you can't even function.

There’s a lot of things to be angry about here, but “and for other purposes” is not one of them. That’s standard language in bills so they can bake smaller things in. I’m in no way defending this bill, but that is just boiler plate language.
fliberdygibits@reddit
More and more in modern times that may be "boiler plate" but it's ALSO an underhanded way to sneak in more unsavory shit down the road.
neoh4x0r@reddit
It's like what companies write in their TOS -- "We reserve the right to make changes to this TOS with/without notification."
duiwksnsb@reddit
That boilerplate language is absolutely something to be angry about. Any other purposes should be enumerated explicitly in any legislation.
WhiteRabbit86@reddit
I see where you’re coming from, but it is enumerated. All you have to do is read the bill. Chat gpt is a thing. It’s all there nothing is being hidden. That language has been in use for a very long time, and every bill title would be CRAZY long if you baked it all into the title.
bobthebobbest@reddit

PracticalPersonality@reddit
You'll also need to stop using (if you ever have) any sites or applications that require age gating, because if your OS doesn't send the age signal, the site/app will block your access under this law.
What happens if they decide Reddit has too many porn bots and needs to be age gated? Your OS will be free, but you won't be posting here anymore. I'm betting that's a sacrifice many here are willing to make, but we'd be in the national minority.
OkTry9715@reddit

That would bring AWS, and thus a huge chunk of the internet, to its knees, unless they're going to add exemptions for machine to machine connections, which then creates an incredibly simple work around.
rebellioninmypants@reddit
So from what you're saying, this whole AWS thing - it sounds like a child safety hazard. We have to ban it at once!
It's equally as absurd as the rest of this circus so far. But the worst part is I can actually see it happening. I mean, look at age verification, then look at the router ban... ex dee.

DoubleOwl7777@reddit
convict the epstein pedos first. that will protect kids. not such a law.
spaceursid@reddit
Agreed. Tbh my stance on limiting tech for the sake of the children is that it's the parents job to do that. There are plenty of parental controls on devices that parents can take advantage of.
DoubleOwl7777@reddit
no doubt.parents gotta parent.
spaceursid@reddit
Tbh been thinking of starting up a YT or TikTok channel that focuses on how to enable these things. Not sure if it will do well enough in the algo to be worth it tho.
Gimpy1405@reddit
If it would truly be the best way of protecting kids, I might hold my nose and support it, but it will not protect kids, and it will cause a lot of needless problems.
Dr_Valen@reddit
If they actually cared about protecting kids they would have never ended the internet safety campaigns from when I was a kid. Especially the part about not sharing your name online and the like. This is all for data harvesting like always

Let's replace the words "operating system" with "gun" and watch the bill's proponents wriggle.
aliendude5300@reddit
I hear what you're trying to say, but you already have to be 18 to buy a gun.
DoubleOwl7777@reddit
and buying or using a computer is just a little bit different than a firearm dont you think...
idiomatic@reddit
I'm glad the only way to get a gun is via law-abiding retail. /s
Here's a thought: instead of restricting operating systems and guns, we fix regulation of ISPs and bullets.
meltbox@reddit
I mean for guns we could also just start actually pulling licenses for people who repeatedly have guns being purchased in straw sales but we can’t even be bothered to enforce existing law on that so…
guitarot@reddit
Whenever they say it's "for the children", it ain't. If they wanted to do something for the children, they'd lower the voting age to 13.
Correctthecorrectors@reddit
the only thing they’ll lower for children is the age of consent
DoubleOwl7777@reddit
"consent" yeah as if the pedos care about that
gittubaba@reddit
I wonder "It's just a field in systemd, don't manufacture false panic" people will say now.
SanityInAnarchy@reddit
The field in systemd is still just a field in systemd.
The false panic is over the field in systemd while exactly this was happening elsewhere. People lost their minds over a law in California that basically just requires a field in systemd, while there's already a law in Utah that requires verification.
DoubleOwl7777@reddit
to add to that, its a field in homed. something which not every distro even has installed.
thaynem@reddit
The law in utah only applies to commercial app stores on mobile devices. Still not great, but it isn't as broad in scope as the California law
SanityInAnarchy@reddit
It doesn't say "commercial" app stores, and it defines "app stores" broadly enough to include basically any method of software distribution that can get software onto a mobile device, likely including Linux distro repositories, source code repos (Github), or even just any website with a download link -- mozilla.org is arguably an app store under this law.
It also defines "mobile device" vaguely enough that a 2-in-1 laptop might count. It's unclear whether a distro running inside a VM counts -- if so, any distro that supports ARM, even if it was intended for (say) a RaspberryPi, or maybe an AWS Graviton server, it still might count if it can be made to run inside of Android's new Linux VMs.
It is obviously intended to target only commercial app stores -- basically, Google and Apple. We can hope that courts interpret it that way -- software people often forget that the law isn't software and that human judgment is deliberately part of how the law is evaluated. But just reading the text, it seems like it can be applied every bit as broadly as the California law, only it requires actual verification, while the California law just requires you to enter a birthdate.
tdammers@reddit
An RPi running on a battery is technically also a "mobile device", isn't it?
SanityInAnarchy@reddit
Ah, no, that's the one thing they specified at least a bit. From the law:
A pi isn't a phone, and at least the traditional headless ones aren't tablets. They don't go so far as to define "phone" or "tablet", but I doubt a Pi is sufficient by itself. Though, again, if you built something like this, suddenly whatever you run on that is a "mobile operating system."
And that's the actual problem, the definitions of "mobile app store" and "mobile operating system" are overly broad:
This is pretty much the textbook definition of an operating system, they just threw "mobile device" in there. But it's hard not to read this as: Any operating system that you can run on a "mobile device" is a "mobile operating system". Debian is the default OS for Android's new Linux VMs, therefore Debian is a mobile operating system. That Pi-powered eBook reader presumably runs Raspbian, so that's a mobile operating system.
And "app store" is similarly broad:
And that's how mozilla.org becomes a mobile app store provider.
thaynem@reddit
Yes, it defined app store broadly enough it would probably apply to, say, f-droid. However, the requirement to verify the age is "at the time an individual who is located in the state creates an account with the app store provider".
And for open source "app stores" you don't ever create an account with the provider, so they aren't required to verify your age. And AFAICT there is no requirement that an app store requires you to create an account. At least, that is my reading of it. But IANAL, and the lawmakers may not even be aware there are app stores that don't require creating an account, so I'm not sure that would hold up in court.
I was probably incorrect to say "commercial", but commercial app stores typically require you to create an account, and non-commercial ones typically don't.
SanityInAnarchy@reddit
Well, there is a requirement that an app have a way to find out the (verified) age bracket of the user by talking to the app store. So this could be read to imply that all users must have an account, otherwise there'd be no way to satisfy this other legal requirement.
aliendude5300@reddit
Nothing different. Fuck this bill, but systemd itself is fine, just don't populate that field. The systemd change isn't problematic. Keep an eye out for ACTUAL ID VERIFICATION being proposed. Then you'll have a reason to panic.
Ill_Net_8807@reddit

This isnt something you can just ignore given how digital life is now... It will impact you dramatically and youll be forced to comply or live a substandard life.
Tsukikira@reddit
Not really. You can just lie to the OS. They cannot force you to tell the truth. It's not fucking rocket science. HateHumansLoveDogs@reddit
lol they will just shut it down, im telling you if you are not running an approved OS with verification they will simply turn off your internet
MBILC@reddit
The issue will be more of how many sites and services will eventually require that age verification field or data to be transmitted before you can access the site...
This is the first step, get the required fields and checks into the OS, step 2. now require all companies that want to do service to the U.S, MUST check said field and validate, otherwise deny access to said resources..
Banking, email, social media, homedepot site..you name it..
No-Assumption-4468@reddit
You can’t really legislate open source software like that thought. Just sudo rm the age verification package. Right?
If they bake age verification into the kernel, someone will fork it. Swapping kernels is trivial on many Linux distros. Just download with a package manager and choose the kernel when you boot.
If they put it in your favorite distro, a simple popular script could disable it.
Id be more concerned about hardware based age verification because firmware swapping is a bit more involved and risky.
HateHumansLoveDogs@reddit
I bet they will have the ISP you use shut down your connection if you dont comply

Its global so it dont matter they will give the ISP's authority to shut your connection if you dont comply I bet
NeverrSummer@reddit
Sure, but there's a lot more on the internet than just passive media. Being outright banned from Discord or Snapchat would annoy a lot of people, for example.
not_the_fox@reddit
Then abandoned it. Build something new. Those corpo sites get more and more censored. It's less and less worth it to sacrifice for them.

Please tell me how I can abandon my jobs paperless only payroll provider? Id love to figure out how I can do my taxes by opting out of this and using p2p networks!
NeverrSummer@reddit
That's a completely unrealistic solution for millions of people, as I'm sure you're aware.
zeno0771@reddit
So was the Internet itself 40 years ago.
not_the_fox@reddit
It isn't, people just don't love the internet like they used to and so they will lose it. People who are willing to build and pioneer will have fewer reasons to care as time goes on.
NeverrSummer@reddit
Yes it's almost like other people have different values and priorities than you.

What they will do is make an internet connection based on your age verification. If that happens, we're all just fucked.
NeverrSummer@reddit
I mean yeah possibly, which is why I'm concerned that simple non-compliance isn't really a solution.
sparky8251@reddit
Once banking websites and apps require this, email providers require it and mark non-verified major providers as spam, you basically cant get a job or bank and thus buy stuff and live life itself by merely "refusing".
This is all coming down the pipe. I dont get why people act like its trivial to just individually oppose when this is going to be the total death of any online anonymity under threat of effectively starving to death on the streets...

They know they like contributions from Meta and trading favors with lobbyists who are in that scene.
There's nothing stupid or innocent about any of this. It's first, a favor to try to fling liability for damaging children or anyone else away from Meta and on to other possible defendants, and then second, a potential money source and point of future expansion or abuse for something else.
HateHumansLoveDogs@reddit
You guys are focusing on Meta because its in the news, but thats not the biggest contributor nor is it the biggest issue. Try Bezos and Gates

I bet this proposed bill the Republicans drafted if passes in the Senate will mean Trump will sign it into law. I bet all OS's will then have a specified number of days to comply with this federal law and any OS not in compliance with this federal law will have X number of days to comply or else be banned which can mean anyone using a banned OS will eventually be fined.
Bah, it's getting to a point now when GNU/Linux's freedom is no longer completely free anymore.
To be completely honest with you all, I really don't believe such an Age Verification law will actually be enforceable because that not only means implementing some sort of service berried deep within our chosen operating systems that's actively running, but I'm guessing all websites will need at least some modification to incorporate this as well but I really don't see that happening anytime soon.
MidsouthMystic@reddit
I am so tired of this. I will not give anyone my ID or verify my age to use the internet.
cazzipropri@reddit
Still annoying, but notably, it's binding only for providers of operating systems.
If you build your OS and install it on your machine, there's no provider.
And if the law characterized me as a provider, good fucking luck enforcing it on me as I run my code on my silicon.
Randolph__@reddit
This is the best way to do age verification. You do it once per device and websites call an API for verification.
To be clear I am against age verification. This is just the best way to do it.
aliendude5300@reddit
No, to hell with that. I shouldn't need to verify my age to use a new computer.
Randolph__@reddit
What part of I am against age verification was unclear?
aliendude5300@reddit
It's most definitely not the right approach regardless. Doing any sort of verification at the OS level is dumb.
Randolph__@reddit
It's better to do it once rather than dozens of times for each site. In all seriousness what is a better alternative if it has to be done.

The age of self-hosting is upon us. Lets all install the pirate os and browse the internet with freedom in our hearts. :D
kansetsupanikku@reddit
We need non-US operating systems ready for yesterday. Linux could be a great base, but mainline Linux dependence on the US is too problematic, a politically free fork should get maintenance and a very deep audit.
Operating systems from the USA are no better choice than from China, Russia or North Korea. We shouldn't submit to laws of such regimes, we should ostracize them instead.
And submitting to the US regulations and domestic patents is doing enough damage already. Availability of codecs, patented HDMI, distributing results of reverse engineering - should never be an issue had it not been for the corrupted US law. Open source projects should stay away from that, benefit from freedom from that legal system, and let the US block them if that's what they wish for. Their democracy crisis is for the US citizens to solve, and pretending it doesn't exist isn't helpful to anyone.
Rincepticus@reddit
What do you mean we need non-US operating system? What is Linux? Debian for example is decentralized open source OS developed by many people in many different countries. Like pretty much all Linux distros (not all but pretty much all). And for those that are not SUSE is from Germany and Ubuntu for Britain.
kansetsupanikku@reddit
They all maintain Linux patches rather than their own branch where they would cherry-pick updates to Linux. The distinction wouldn't matter technically, but it's about the amount of effort and resources towards working on that code. No distribution follows the whole Linux code.
And Linus, Linux Foundation, and most of the subsystem maintainers are in the US, subject to that law (and unlawful governance). It doesn't even take introducing backdoors - bugs that appear organically and remain purposefully unnoticed can be enough. And we have zero reason to trust that the USA doesn't use this opportunity. Simply too much of the kernel work is covered under the same regime to consider it international, much less trustworthy.
And finding or making a non-US operating system in that sense is difficult - which is a result of some pretty aggressive market practices. The most prominent alternative would be OpenBSD.
jmcunx@reddit
Linux is just a kernel, I really doubt the law will apply to Linux it self. But it will apply to all distros if passed.
From other articles I saw, a distro maintaining age verification could cost up to 100,000 USD per year. The cost depends upon the bill itself.
I hate to say this, knowing Congress, this will probably kill all small US Based Distros, maybe leaving only RHEL.
kansetsupanikku@reddit
I believe age verification to be the last call to cut ties with the US requirements. Even if there is no connection of this specific law with the kernel itself: the US dependence is broken, and it's time to leave.
Mind you, Linux distros don't follow every law of every country already. China, North Korea, and some Islamic states maintain their own distros. The USA is on its way to prove it's not different.
And the only reason for potentially different treatment is that some projects, down to the kernel, are US-based. Windows, macOS, Linux, FreeBSD, NetBSD - that's an alarming monopoly. And I believe that external auditing, alternatives, or at least - hard forks with other management, are severely needed. Based on Linux (the widest adaptation among open source options) or OpenBSD (from Canada, which might be already a better option).
Rincepticus@reddit
It is hard for me to argue because I am fairly new to Linux and don't know the technical "ins and outs". But I would say your claim is fairly unrealistic. Linux Foundarion provides kernel. But kernel is not OS. It is what powers the OS from what I understand.
So far what I have seen the age verification laws usually target operating systems or softwares. Not what is behind them. It's like saying we need non-US coding language because "The Python Software Foundation" is US based and would be hit by age verification laws. Discord was hit by age verification laws not because the foundation, Python in whic it (or atleast part of it) was codes, is US based. But because it is an software company based in US.
mrlinkwii@reddit
nope , discord got hist because they provide a sevice in the UK , remember discord in complying to UK law not US law , and for easier mantance and for other laws coming into the EU they enabled it worldwide

Sometimes I think people forget that Parental Controls are a thing.
(Some) Parents are just stupid or simply don't understand the weight of their decisions.
Like, some parents unanimously allow their kid to use Whatsapp. It's just for chat, isn't it? What's that, child content in group chats with hundreds of participants of all ages? People betting on Robucks?
We already have parental controls. Stopping kids from installing whatever garbage they want.
On a PC it gets more difficult as even as a non administrator, as long as you have Internet/USB you can install anything and everything a kid would want, unless parents know how to install software to block such efforts.
Such Bills are completely pointless. Just look at all the parents letting their kids use their notebook or phone.
Yeah, THEY did the age verification/I'd stuff and now their KID is 18+. Great. The same BS child prevention as the Corn websites that ask "are you sure you are an adult?"

Alright so technically as long as they don’t violate the contract the client signed there’s really nothing to be done. The best that’s reasonable is laws mandating that TOS must be succinct and human readable.

Did they violate the contract ?
May 1910 (Export, PA): Sheriff’s deputies attacked striking miners, killing a miner who was trying to protect a child in his arms. July 1910 (South Greensburg): Deputies charged a marching crowd of miners with horses, killing a miner.
Bubbly_Extreme4986@reddit
Yeah I don’t think that police officers are allowed to brutalize their masters (because the relation between private and public officials is one where the private citizen is the master and the public worker the servant). I would deem this as government overreach
nica939@reddit
They were protecting corporate interests.
Bubbly_Extreme4986@reddit
I’m not pro corporations however I believe that human rights occupies a binary value. If a sick businessman can be murdered then it’s not that far away from murdering anyone else. There’s a reason that it’s illegal to commit murder.
nica939@reddit
It's already happening Human rights come at a price that were paid for in blood. A society can only take so much bullshit before it starts fighting back.
Bubbly_Extreme4986@reddit
The real tragedy is the betrayal of the private industry. Rather than fight the good fight against tyranny and the totalitarian state they subverted the state and use legal power to achieve their profit gains. Then they should be classified as a public good not a private company. A private company is private, being of the master class they don’t associate with government officials (servants) because that would be demeaning. If they were to do such a thing then I wouldn’t mind nationalizing them. If you use taxpayer funds and the evil power of the law then you are a public agency.
nica939@reddit
I agree with all that you said. I just wish it was a possibility in the current climate
Bubbly_Extreme4986@reddit
Nope not a chance in hell. But the goal isn’t to start nationalizing companies. It’s to destroy the government and replace with libre alternatives that actually respect people’s natural rights.
nica939@reddit
That leads to the question and outcome that no one wants for this country. "What type of American are you?"
Bubbly_Extreme4986@reddit
The Tim May crypto anarchist type libertarian?
nica939@reddit
Really think that the people in power would let that happen without bloodshed? Did they sign the contract ?
Bubbly_Extreme4986@reddit
I mean the idea of crypto anarchy is that the internet+cryptography makes such a thing inevitable. At some point cryptography will get the applications it deserves and that will essentially render governments useless. The software is in its infancy right now. For example a decentralized proof of work anonymous currency can replace the bogus US dollar, escrow contracts could in some future date allow billion dollar deals to happen with no government mediation, dark net markets could take up the bulk of the economy wiping out the unjust power to tax. Eh it’s dreams right now but at some point someone is going to right that line of code that sets us all free, forever.
nica939@reddit
Talking about getting rid of the US dollar is dangerous. Look at lybia and Iraq. Yea they were ran by shitty leaders but the straw that broke the camera back was trying to move away from the dollar.
I wish it could be solved with code but I don't have the vision to see that happen.

Peaceful means of expressing dissent are only peaceful as long as the state allows. For example, it wouldn't take any time at all for Pinkertons to try to violently force an end to general strike

Ask either of these two representatives who are floating this bill to define operating system.
Age verification for your refrigerator, thermostat and automobile? That sounds feasible. /s
aliendude5300@reddit
They are clearly thinking phones are a short-sighted
Max_minutia@reddit
So…. Then linux parses out what is and isn’t an operating system. Removes the files that make it an operating system. Then you’re directed to seek a linker file which they do not provide. The linker file only contains those individual files not a operating system. They are systematically put together by the linker file into an operating system.
nazgand@reddit
Does the bill propose a way to supply cryptographic evidence of a user's adulthood without revealing the user's identity, similar to how https://www.phreeli.com/ separates identity from payment? Probably not. Boo!
Does the bill disallow all ways to supply cryptographic evidence of a user's adulthood without revealing the user's identity? Probably not. Hooray!
Either way, age verification in operating systems should not be necessary. Having an opt-in to identity verification might be good for those who want it, but most of the time in such cases, a credit card or similar is required anyway.
aliendude5300@reddit
Right now we don't know what the bill says. I'm trying to find a copy.

I found this. It's a press release by the author of the bill. https://www.youtube.com/live/21Ao9ExQaAA I think this is referring to the new bill he introduced that would affect the whole US. Skip to 14:35.

Apprehensive_Milk520@reddit
There is no fighting this - sanity at the government level no longer exists in the US.. Ulterior motives are behind this inane movement and evil conquers, always.
My question is this - wouldn't it just be possible to use a VPN service to connect to a server in a country which does not mandate age verification to download a version of the distro from repos in that country which does not have age verification baked into it?
Perhaps I'm over simplifying it...
aliendude5300@reddit
I imagine there will be one version of each distro and it'll ask you country on install
Apprehensive_Milk520@reddit
Woluldn't that alienate users in countries where age verification is not a thing? Why should they have to have data collected on where they live?
Seriously, big brother at work here, no joke, the real deal, just another mark of the beast...
aliendude5300@reddit
I don't know if it'll be collected per se, just used to curate the installation; there are LOTS of regional differences - keyboard, language and, yes, regulations.
South_Leek_5730@reddit
Just think of all those sexy fully verified demographics for ads. This is like fetish territory for google, meta and microsoft too.
Thinking about this there is a little teeny tiny problem they haven't considered. What if someone installs their OS without internet? You may say they can disable that but I can think of many reasons a system would never ever be connected to the internet even just for install. How will this even work in the corporate world where the PC doesn't have an owner?
I think I can safely say this is fucking dumb.
meltbox@reddit
Well everyone in Congress is like 500 years old so they’re too fucking old to know how these things work other than “I pay Verizon for the WiFi”.

Is this as bad as it sounds? If I verify my age via OS, wouldn't that mean my OS could verify my age for all other apps / instances that would want verification? Wouldn't this also mean my children's accounts would be a lot harder for them to fake their age?
tdammers@reddit
In a nutshell, it's pretty much impossible to do this in a way that actually prevents children from faking their age brackets while at the same time protecting legit users' privacy.
The closest thing to that pipe dream would be a government-controlled authentication system, using government-issued electronic identification devices (similar to Yubikeys or something like that, possibly built into ID documents - EU has already rolled out the technology, though it's not used for this kind of thing, at least not yet), but even that isn't foolproof: all it takes is for a kid to "borrow" daddy's driving license, and if you want to prevent that, you need some kind of biometrics check, which requires that the user give up control of their camera etc. And even then, the whole system is just begging to be attacked, and because no information system is 100% secure, someone is going to compromise that thing eventually, and then all sorts of highly sensitive personal data is up for sale, all that because people can't be bothered to raise their children responsibly and take the time to actually supervise their online activity.
And none of that is going to happen here anyway. Realistically, the options are:
If your goal was to make it easier for parents to block adult content on their kids' devices, then it would be enough to define standard interfaces for these things (I'm sure the US government has ways of making that happen, probably without even changing any laws), and making it mandatory for anyone who offers content that's not suitable for all age groups to use those standard interfaces, when available, to reject traffic from minors. Parents who want to block such content can install software that supports the standard interfaces, forcing apps and websites to block adult content; everyone else can just keep doing what they're doing without blocking anything.
laffer1@reddit
Do you want to share your id with palantir and have it associated to your computer? Do you want to lose your anonymity
New_Shoes_@reddit
How could an os enforce sharing your ID? I assumed it would be a drop down box
EmbarrassedHelp@reddit
Like Apple does currently in the UK if you want an example. Your device is permanently set to child mode with apps like web browsers heavily restricted. The only way to restore full functionality of your Apple device in the UK is to let them violate your privacy with mandatory age verification.
vriska1@reddit
And that not even legal for them to do.
laffer1@reddit
QR code scan to a web service. There are already companies doing this for apps
New_Shoes_@reddit
This sounds like a big problem. What if the person doesn't have a phone to scan a qr code? What if the person doesn't have an ID? What about a system that's intended to be offline only?
laffer1@reddit
It is a huge problem. The California version is just typing an age. It has problems but many other bills include id checks. This is already in place for iOS and android with new device setups in some jurisdictions
ComprehensiveHawk5@reddit
Due to a lack of the text we don't know yet. It is highly unlikely to be a reasonable bill though if similar bills at the state level are anything to go by.
DoubleOwl7777@reddit

Zatujit@reddit
Thats great when they can put aside their differences when its about surveillance
mpayne007@reddit
its vital people write to their congresspersons ASAP.
Here is essentially what i am telling my congressperson
H.R. 8250 claims to protect children online, but in reality it creates a dangerous system of mandatory identity verification for anyone using a phone or computer. This is not a narrow safety measure—it is a sweeping requirement that forces all Americans to submit sensitive personal information just to access essential technology.
This raises serious constitutional concerns:
Beyond the constitutional issues, this bill does not actually solve the problem it claims to address. Determined minors can bypass restrictions, while bad actors will ignore them. Instead, it creates a false sense of security.
At its core, this proposal looks less like a child safety measure and more like a framework for mass surveillance—centralizing sensitive personal data and expanding the potential for tracking and misuse.
We can and should protect children online—but not by sacrificing the fundamental rights and freedoms of every American.
meltbox@reddit
I don’t know how to edit this to include it but by forcing adults to identify themselves we are also creating a signal which can be used to identify kids. Of course this will create an environment where bad actors can use this signal to select for kids online and target them!
This is actually a system which will put children in more danger as it’s currently written at least and that seems crazy to me.
sparky8251@reddit
Given who runs the US, the fact it makes it easy to identify and prey on kids seems more the point than protecting them...

TowelFine6933@reddit
What they need to do is incorporate into the OS the ability for a parent to set the device as belonging to a minor. We can passcode our TVs to limit the type of content, why can't the same thing be done with PCs, phones & tablets?
No IDs or face scans required. The parent creates a password & activates the feature. On the other end, sites have a check for the "minor" setting. If it's on, the site doesn't load, if it's off, the site operates as normal.
Seems a like an obvious solution to me.
DoubleOwl7777@reddit
nope. they aint mandating what runs on my pc. not gonna happen.
NeverrSummer@reddit
I mean you don't have to run this software, but it will default you to the minor setting on all of these websites. Refusal isn't a loophole. It will just mean every website treats you like a child by default.
TowelFine6933@reddit
No, the default would be "adult". A parent would activate the "minor" setting and then password protect it.
laffer1@reddit
Your plan doesn’t make palantir money so it won’t be done
TowelFine6933@reddit
Yeah. Sadly, you are correct.
NeverrSummer@reddit
Sure in your idealized version of it, but that isn't the reality what's actually going to happen.
TowelFine6933@reddit
So, if you're not a minor, that feature doesn't get activated and it's business as usual without any need to divulge anything about you.
Mountain-Resolve5881@reddit
