Road tax was replaced by VED in 1937. You would have to have been a car owner 90 years ago to have ever paid it.
And these days, VED is a punitive tax based on emissions. There isn't even the pretence that it funds road building and maintenance. It's just supposed to deter you from buying and operating the most polluting vehicles.

I meant the UK road tax. But I got more responses from the US. It looks like it is also relevant over there. But thanks for the clarification.
DivasDayOff@reddit
Yup. It's UK road tax that hasn't existed since 1937. The distinction doesn't really matter until some car driver acts like they're more important than other road users because they pay "road tax" and the others don't.
Road maintenance is mostly funded by local authorities, so if you're spending money you've worked for on council tax, you're contributing to the upkeep of the roads regardless of how you use them.

Fixing potholes isn’t sexy to voters, it doesn’t award big contracts to firms that lobby for them
Creating new infrastructure with no long term maintenance funding strategy is what looks good
Religion_Of_Speed@reddit
idk maybe it's just the people I hang around or where I live but I bet someone could run solely on a platform of fixing the roads and they would do well
Ban-Circumcision-Now@reddit
We had a candidate running in fixing infrastructure/healthcare/etc
They lost to someone promising lower taxes instead

That sounds about right.

I found spray painting offensive symbols on them gets them fixed pretty quickly.
TheSmartToasterUnion@reddit (OP)
It works although I wouldn’t encourage anyone doing that because I don’t want to be arrested for instigating a crime. Once some wrote next to one: “Boys! My hole needs filling!” It was fixed pretty soon afterwards.

Baltimore used recycled glass bottles in their aggregate to fix all the bad roads in the 90’s……
Too bad they ran out of glass bottles and had to make new ones just to smash for the road.

that's "CRAZY TALK", right there!
TheSmartToasterUnion@reddit (OP)
I know. It comes from dystopian Sci Fi.
Select_Foundation472@reddit
This person is insane, lock them up right now!!
Legal_Bed_1506@reddit
The local road crew who fixes them has like 5 guys, 30 bags of cold patch a month, and only two of them have a CDL. They will get to it eventually before the freezing temps make more.

Nah mate. Crazy talk.
We should send that money to the military to buy $200m jets and $10m smart bombs, then fly them half way around the world to install pot holes in some no name Iraqi village.
If I need to suffer, we all should.
TheSmartToasterUnion@reddit (OP)
Brilliant idea. You should be the new finance secretary.
Legal_Bed_1506@reddit
Good thing the Secretary of Finance doesn’t set the budget

I've just ordered 100,000 hat's with 'Make Pot Holes Great Again'.
1m hats sold. We bomb Canada. 5m stretch goal is Greenland.
Art of the Deal Folks.

Good job, mate.

Here is the thing Private Equity needs more money to study the issue more and find ways to save more money for the tax pays in the future this will be at least another quarter of gas tax.
PacoTaco321@reddit
They do fix them sometimes, but in a way that gets immediately torn out by a car driving over it.

Banned? Why banned? They’re probably gonna sneak into your residence, do something to you, and make it look like you did it to yourself.
