Poland’s only racetrack with FIA homologation, Tor Poznań, has just been closed

Polish general environmental inspectorate (GIOŚ) has decided to shut down Poznań’s racetrack, due to exceeding sound limits on two nearby streets (limit was 50 dB). Article in Polish.

They already folded under pressure and it's currently open
offtheboat@reddit
It is literally next to an airport.
franksandbeans911@reddit
Don't worry, they'll get EV planes soon using UFO technology that make no sound at all. Probably. Maybe. Never.
ob_knoxious@reddit
While I 1000% agree this is a stupid ban Electric flight for small aircraft has made genuine progress.
WetChickenLips@reddit
99.9% of small planes are running leaded gasoline lol. I'll believe it when I see it.
vetruviusdeshotacon@reddit
Nah they'll require the planes to emit a brian eno song just like evs lool
franksandbeans911@reddit
Selection process could take entire minutes. lol
Ksenobiolog@reddit
They also have a problem with the airport. There'll be a ban on night flights (from 1am to 5am) starting later this year. This is one of the oldest airports in the world. The race track was built in the 70s, while the local houses that report on noise were built in the 90s...

Land use changes over time.
The ironic thing is that the car both accelerates this and ossifies it once it's done so.

Update - decision is waived after facing a huge backlash in all over the internet. Even minister of infrastructure said, that „object like this are elements of education and prevention, not source of dangers”.
JamiDoesStuff@reddit
Wait 50dB limit? a completely stock economy car will make that amount of noise
R_V_Z@reddit
50dB where measured, not where created.
foytizzle@reddit
Talking will make more noise than that
7xm2@reddit
Polish poltics is funny. As the world's of the poltical party in charge of the place, why should we have a racetrack when we have race tracks In Germany
niccotaglia@reddit
honestly the track management should release names and addresses of everyone who lodged a noise complaint. Hope they enjoy 2am pops and bangs meets, burnouts and car audio in front of their house for the foreseeable future
Moth92@reddit
Let me guess, someone wants to build houses/condos where the track is?
desf15@reddit
Nah, they've already built them nearby, and closure is due to owners protesting about noise from race track. Even though it was operating there for decades earlier.
J_NonServiam@reddit
A tale as old as time.

I don't know why these kinds of developments are even approved unless the city is intentionally trying to get rid of a race track or airport.
desf15@reddit
Funny you should mention airport, because one is located near this track, and they were also protesting against it :)
eirexe@reddit
I've seen pics from a polish sub with some zoning plans over it, so yes
Cessnaporsche01@reddit
Or a fucking datacenter...

50db is insane. Normal cars on the road are louder than that
JapanStan@reddit
An electric car traveling past you on the street at 50mph is probably louder than 50db, with the wind and tire noise it produces.
Quaiche@reddit
Them heavy electric cars are super loud when they blast over my cobblestone street, it’s difficult to see any difference with the ice cars.
Rohkii@reddit
And then at slow speed some of them have chimes louder than any new ICE grind-mobile you can buy.
OllieFromCairo@reddit
Indeed. For a point of comparison, 60dB is normal conversation and 70dB is roughly taking a shower.
OptionXIII@reddit
61 dB is the quietest interior at 70mph ever tested by Car and Driver, a Bentley.
This racetrack is being closed for being half as loud as a Bentley interior just driving down the highway.
pdp10@reddit
Decibels drop off logarithmically with distance. It depends entirely on where the measurements were taken.
OllieFromCairo@reddit
Decibels are weird because they are a logarithmic scale. 60 dB is ten times the energy of 50dB.
The energy is inversely proportional to the square of the distance to the source. This means that each time you double the distance, you drop the sound level by 6 dB.
So if the car is 100 dB at 10 m, it will be 94 at 20, 88 at 40, 82 at 80, etc. You’d drop to 50 dB at 2.5 km.
Now, things like walls around the racetrack can absorb or redirect a lot of the sound, but even if that absorbs or redirects 90% of it, your 50 dB is cut to only a third, so about 800 m in this case.

Very dissapointing news, hopefully some willing politician or public figure will see the sense in keeping this track alive and step up with help and legislations needed!
Poncho_Sanchez@reddit
There is literall Airport next to the track, nearly fence to fence. Track used to be nowehere near residentail area, developers have bought land for cheap (as becouse of Airport and Track), now people are complaing about noise.
Same story happened with Lublin Track and spare tracks in Poland are becoming less and less, while hooning on the streets becomes strickter and strickter.
In Lublin now where Track used to stand are residentail homes, same probably will heppen to Poznań.
UltraHawk_DnB@reddit
50DB??????????????????????????? that's not loud at all wht the hell
thatlittletallguy@reddit
This was the track which The Grand Tour raced at in their Eurocrash special. Sad to see.
Eggonioni@reddit
Sounds like a bunch of dweeb real estators/HOA-types that need to be wedgied hard.
UranusMc@reddit
Can't wait for everyone to start complaining about street racing
Andreas1120@reddit
Homo what?
Pussyslayer109@reddit
My father used to do a track day there once ayear, with a V12 car producing 116db. Then one day, inspectors came and took tests of everyones cars, and informing them they could no longer drive the track due to noise restrictions. Ironic thing is right next door is an airport, with heavy F-16 activity.
bullyXLdisrespector@reddit
V12 sounds are bad for Blackrock's home valuations, while F-16s are needed to protect them. Slava Blackrockni.
V8-Turbo-Hybrid@reddit
I never knew this track existence, as GTWC Euro and ELMS not race there when I became their race fan.
