I found a worm in my sardine salad sandwich

It's the curly hair by the string cheese. I would show a zoomed in shot but the post only allows for one photo. Suffer with me đĽ˛
NiobiumThorn@reddit
Yea that's why you don't look at the insides of your sardines. Just eat it and don't think about it.
Effectively all fish have them
CarmenxXxWaldo@reddit
Humans: put worms on hooks and try to get fish to eat them - this is a billion dollar industry.
Also humans: There is a WORM in my FISH.
Princess_Slagathor@reddit
Why are you eating the stomach?
No_Country_2069@reddit
I know youâre making a joke but Iâve had a fish stomach dish in Vietnam that was actually very tasty
Princess_Slagathor@reddit
Well that just made me curious. How was it prepared? Crispy or soft? Contents drained or no? Was it good? Does it compare to anything you've had before?
No_Country_2069@reddit
Found this picture and [this one](https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/gps-cs-s/APNQkAGjf9PjTbgQhCODqAULtid2nDoTDdBHLoFRnY-EXUsQtVpkLLl0XGXmqDfSah6XU0vrcHMPvSAZ-pJxyvp696SNpgQZEcXQinCc-k7GkUrQU9qGw2iDETEew6eAzHgnzMsgbwpE=s1360-w1360-h1020-rw from the restaurant's Google Maps page.
It was sauteed with onions and green peppers and peppercorns, so had a bit of spice to it and was kinda savory, but more so due to the ingredients. I don't think stomach itself is very flavorful. Definitely no contents inside lol
I really enjoyed it, like I've been to this restaurant a few times and have ordered it more than once, but I've lived in Asia for like a decade and am a pretty adventerous eater. It definitely wasn't the strangest thing I've tried/tasted. It was pretty similar to other organs, so not very flavorful and a bit chewy. With organs, they're more eaten for the texture (or health benefits) and the flavor really comes from what they're served with.
Huju-ukko@reddit
Because the worms are there. Weird question.
CorvoAttano124@reddit
Extra protein, duh
GMAN7007@reddit
Generally us humans don't eat the entrails of fish.
Conscious-Paper3543@reddit
WHATTT
NiobiumThorn@reddit
Yea it's usually fine tho.
Not always though. That's why you fish is frozen and/or cooked fully. https://www.reddit.com/r/EatItYouFuckinCoward/comments/1hiwcm6/anisakisinfested_cod_liver/
CD84@reddit
Goddamn, like... I know. But I wasn't quite ready for that.
ThatGuyFrom720@reddit
Thatâs why Iâve solely switched to tuna. Still love me some salmon, but Tuna is a similar price and I like it more. Not exempt but much less prevalent.
Conscious-Paper3543@reddit
yeah but at the same time they are way more polluted. In the end it does not matter if you eat cooked worms
sunny_duh_aze@reddit
I knew that was the post. I can read "cod-liver" anywhere on the internet and think about that liver. Still opened the link, still surprisingly gross
wolverinesbabygirl@reddit
You sure it isn't the spine?
landomonium@reddit
Never heard of sardine salad, the idea has never crossed my mind, but I love sardines. Is it good?? Just sardines, mayo, and whatever else I want- like how tuna salad is made?
Niptaa@reddit
Just to let you know, if youâve had tuna salad or canned salmon or canned any kind of wild caught fish really, youâve eaten canned anisakis worms. If theyâre dead, theyâre perfectly safe to eat. Just donât look too carefully or shine your tuna sandwich with a black light if it bothers you. Ignorance is bliss đ
Haggisboy@reddit
Same thing with honey. You've eaten insect bits. We should probably avoid bringing sausage meats into the discussion.
dalecoopernumber4@reddit
Figs too
Bp2Create@reddit
The concept of figs will always be crazy to me
HamHockShortDock@reddit
Wait, why?
Niptaa@reddit
Figs are flowers, not fruit. Their purpose is to be pollinated and they get pollinated by these tiny wasps called fig wasps that crawls into young figs, pollinate it, lay eggs and die. The eggs hatch, become fig wasps, mate and the female wasps crawl out of the fig taking some of the pollen with them to find another young fig to lay eggs in. The fig produces an enzyme that melts the mama and male waspâs body so usually by the time the fig is ripe and ready for us to eat, the fig wasp body is fully dissolved. Figs donât actually need to be pollinated to ripen so most commercial figs are grown indoors or in green houses so the fig wasps donât get to them and they donât produce seeds these days. Figs used to have tiny crunchy seeds in them and those were pollinated by fig wasps and very noticeable in fig bars but theyâre less noticeable nowadays so they must have switched over to unpollinated figs in the last few decades
HamHockShortDock@reddit
Omg I wondered about the seed thing. My neighbor had a fig tree (plant?) and I remember them being so crunch.
codya30@reddit
Actually, most commercial figs haven't been pollinated by wasps for a very long time.
sama-llama@reddit
The fig tree in my yard, on the other handâŚ
codya30@reddit
shrug
sama-llama@reddit
Oh I mean I still 100% raid that thing every year and eat my body weight in figs.
FormingTheVoid@reddit
Yup, dead wasps inside most likely.
bibblebonk@reddit
no, the wasps would have been fully dissolved. no wasp parts in figs like that
oneredbloon@reddit
Even the exoskeleton? I'm curious
GarboseGooseberry@reddit
Yes. Ficain breaks down everything there is to break down of any wasp unlucky enough to end up trapped inside the fig flower
FormingTheVoid@reddit
I know, but they were still there lol
lt4536@reddit
What about sausages đ
put_it_in_a_jar@reddit
There's a reason the phrase "seeing how the sausage is made" exists
lt4536@reddit
I know hot dogs have all the "bad" parts of the animal in like bone, tendons etc. Is that the same for regular sausages then đđ
Weird_Assignment_550@reddit
Are you sure the phrase isn't "Stop making shit up"?
Ugameister@reddit
Wooden-Bonus-2465@reddit
Im very careful about trimming all the "extras" that come with a pork shoulder (bone, cartilage, tendons, glands and lymph tissue, abscesses, etc) when I make sausage.
I make ~200 lbs per week for retail, and sometimes upwards of 1000 lbs for game processing.
I imagine with factory-scale production a small percentage of that stuff goes.. unnoticed.
Suffice it to say I pretty much avoid sausage in general if I dont see exactly what's in it.

Well, itâs literally bee puke so canât be too grossed out by some insect bits.
STRED92@reddit
I work at a honey plant We filter the honey, but before we do, you get to see all the flowers and insect bits. Its not a huge deal though.
Vivid-Intention-8161@reddit
if youâve ever eaten pistachios and gotten a bitter one, youâve eaten worms â¤ď¸
OddCook4909@reddit
We should probably put the brakes on pistachios and almonds anyways. They absolutely decimate the water table. Sink holes suck

ThanksContent28@reddit
Itâs even present in tuna/salmon steaks iirc. Itâs why we freeze and/or cook them.
boringcranberry@reddit
I don't think I've ever had monkfish. I hear it's one of the best but I've seen comments from chefs that monkfish is one of the wormiest fishes and can't do it.
HojMcFoj@reddit
You just have to trim them up properly, then they're not much worse than any other wild ocean fish. But if you get an untrimmed piece of monkfish and don't know what to expect, it can certainly be alarming.
CommieDog2525@reddit
Also, if you have ever eaten sushi you have definitely ingested dead (hopefully) parasites. The freezing process kills them but you're still left with the body, so to speak

âSardine salad sandwichâ?? You were looking for trouble.
Pink_Neons@reddit
Is it just a piece of spine?
jen_wexxx@reddit (OP)
No, it was stretchy.
Pink_Neons@reddit
A tendon maybe. Bottom line is its probably just a part of the sardine. You are eating the fish in its entirety minus the head (usually)
medicated_in_PHL@reddit
Nah, lots of fish have parasites. It just doesnât really matter because they get cooked.
HamHockShortDock@reddit
Yeah but I think sardines eat mostly like, plankton or maybe algae and that may make a difference. I think part of the parasite issue is fish are always eating other fish.
RecalcitrantHuman@reddit
Allegedly
Rosaly8@reddit
No not allegedly, else more people would be infested by worms.
RecalcitrantHuman@reddit
Most are.
Princess_Slagathor@reddit
Don't they freeze sushi fish because of that?
I_DRINK_GENOCIDE_CUM@reddit
Yep. Most fish, not just for sushi.
obsidian_butterfly@reddit

Multigrain from Trader Joe's. The sardines were also from Trader Joe's.

Sardine salad??? Vile
obsidian_butterfly@reddit
That's just fish, man. We cook and freeze them for a reason. It's gross, mentally speaking, but totally safe.
You will usually not see parasites in fish from the store for two reasons. The biggest is that fillets are inspected and have visible parasites removed during processing (because they gross people out), and then other being farmed fish just have a lower chance of having parasites (untrue if farmed in open ocean nets) because they eat pellets and live in a controlled environment.
But otherwise? Fish generally have some worms. Seriously, go fishing and catch a few trout. Process them and then take a close look at the flesh near the tail. You will typically see a few worms once you really look.
It's completely reasonable and normal to be put off and lose your appetite from seeing this, that's exactly why they take these out of the fillets during processing. But just bear in mind that worm is entirely normal to find in commercial grade fish, and while people try hard to remove them all before they hit your plate sometimes a few get through. We already cook fish to deal with this, you're fine.

Itâs just extra protein.
Not like youâre eating a juicy, live, wriggling earth worm right?

You're already eating sardines. Is a worm really a problem?

why do the mods of this sub only allow 1 photo per post?

NamegeorJ@reddit
I mean depends of the type of worm and the hunger I would keep eating it. Not the first time I had to identify if the worm or bug is harmless or harmful on my food. With vegetables it were plant lice, and with hake it was dead anisaki worms, the latter if they were alive definitely it would do damage, but I know all the cafeteria foods are frozen so extra protein
