What's an irritational pet peeve you observe other drivers doing, that in no way effects you?

For me its seeing someone's wipers going at full speed for a light drizzle or someone talking directly on their phone in a car thats clearly new enough to have Bluetooth

Canada - People who drive around at night with their headlights off. they don’t realize it as their dash lights are on and the DRLs are on as well. Automatic headlights exist for a reason.
Prestigious_Tiger_26@reddit
In California, if your wipers are on, your headlights must be on as well. When it rains heavily but it's not dark enough to trigger the automatic headlights, it's so hard to see them in your mirrors. Of course they're oblivious because they never manually turn on their lights and expect the car to do it for them every time.
maldoricfcatr@reddit
2011 ram truck I think has a feature to turn on headlights if you use wipers.
BJoe1976@reddit
Been seeing that around the Chicagoland area last month or so too, drives me nuts when it doesn’t have an effect on me, but is infuriating when it has the potential, like the person that pulled out of a lot ahead of me a couple weeks ago while heading home from work.
Briiskella@reddit
YESSS the wiper speed finally someone said it 😂🤪

Wearing headphones...literal noise cancelling whole-ass headphones. You dont have a radio in your car? Bluetooth adapter for 20 bucks? Cant put your phone on speaker? Or are they just hoping to get hit by an emergency vehicle?
jeffreyjicha@reddit
No headphones for me, but I do have a bluetooth speaker in my car until I can replace the module that controls my radio and heat/AC

Hands at 11 and 1 on the steering wheel.
StopNowThink@reddit
Similar to seat all the way forward with 1 inch between them and the airbag. If you're that short, you need pedal extensions.
suddenspiderarmy@reddit
My goofball of a sister does that. Drove me crazy when we shared a car because I got my dad's long legs and need it almost all the way back.
jeffreyjicha@reddit
Gf and I share a car. I'm 6'3, I NEED the seat all the way back and as low as I can go to be comfortable and also not hit my head on the headliner. Gf is 5'5 and has to have the seat mostly forward. Absolutely annoying to be in a rush to go somewhere after she drove.
toiletsurprise@reddit
My wife and I are like that, I have short legs so I sit pretty close to the wheel whereas she has long legs and sits much further back. I get in after she was driving and feel like I'm going to fall into the back seat, she gets in after me and scrunches in like she's in a sardine can. "Curse your little legs!"
mallogy@reddit
/r/confidentlyincorrect
Correct driving position is 9-3, close enough that you can turn lock to lock without your shoulders losing contact with the seat.
StopNowThink@reddit
None of what you just said is in conflict with any of what I just said. Where am I incorrect?
mallogy@reddit
My bad. Should have responded to your other reply.

JunkMilesDavis@reddit
People tapping their brakes on the interstate when there's absolutely nothing happening. I don't know why I see it so much more now. Is it an adaptive cruise control thing on newer cars? I don't know, but it always puts me straight into alert mode.
04limited@reddit
It isn’t adaptive cruise because those systems maintain distance mainly by engine braking and rarely apply brakes.
The people who do that are ones who can’t gauge the car infront and its constant gas/brake application. This causes a chain reaction with all the cars behind.
angrycanadianguy@reddit
Less common, but I’ve come across enough people that do this to know it’s not an isolated occurrence, people that two foot drive will do this accidentally, not realizing how little pressure is needed to activate the brake lights.
Infamous_Tough_7320@reddit
I don’t even know how 2 foot drivers have passed there test or fallen into that habit having already passed their test
DDG_Dillon@reddit
Yeah I do sim racing with a wheel and pedals and I use both feet for that, could never on the road though.
Infamous_Tough_7320@reddit
Same. The way I drive on my sim does not in any way translate to how I drive on the roads
ethereal_twin@reddit
Wish this were always the case but have seen cars do this with no one in front of them either
Dinismo@reddit
They are on the phone. Instead of looking at where they are going frequently enough their simple minds tell them to hit the brakes.
PizzaHockeyGolf@reddit
I drive pretty much all day for work. This is the main cause of it. My truck sits high enough I can see the driver look down and then the brake lights come on. Also causes poor speed regulation because if the don’t hit the brake they let up on the gas pedal.
04limited@reddit
Lot of people like to rest their foot on the brake pedal too
turfnerd82@reddit
That's one of mine. Gas then brake then gas then break, like dude just coast or don't press so hard on the pedal it's not hard.
c_is_forcookie@reddit
Not true at all in my experience. Driving manually, I never need to tough the brakes and I use and build a buffer distance. If I'm on adaptive cruise, it is constantly hitting the brakes to maintain an almost exact distance. I have experience with Toyota and Chevy and they both do the same. Toyota is worse and will brake quite hard
illegitimate_Raccoon@reddit
Or the fools who keep their left foot on the brake pedal and randomly apply too much pressure
Ajpeterson@reddit
Sometimes I’ll cancel my cruise control by barely breathing on the brakes if I’m coming up on slower traffic and I’m unable to pass due to the passing lane being taken up by some idiot.
TheMunkeeFPV@reddit
If you’re noticing this more often it could be regenerative breaking. I know my car does it for sure. As soon as I let go of the accelerator or just start to decelerate from letting off a little it’ll automatically turn my break lights on as if I’m breaking.
mickeyaaaa@reddit
my wife's RAV4 will turn on the brake lights if i hold down the coast button on cruise control - not touching brake at all...safety feature maybe....
bassgoonist@reddit
I swear some people are using 2 feet and just getting lazy and pushing on the brake when they don't need to
Chomblop@reddit
A couple of weeks ago I was driving behind someone for about five minutes and their brake lights were on the whole time. Just insanity.
Uber1337pyro333@reddit

Blu_yello_husky@reddit
Theyre just taking cruise control off. Have you never had to take cruise off because someone changed lanes in front of you? I dont understand how so many people on here talk about this as a pet peeve. Its literally them deactivating cruise control. Its super obvious and its certainly no mystery.
LazyLancer@reddit
Not adaptive cruise control per se, but it might be dumb cruise control with brake function. If you're going downhill, some cars with this kind of cruise control implementation might brake to keep within the designated speed limit.
shigatorade@reddit
My Subaru does that shit sometimes where the cruise control will slam on the brakes worse than anything I would’ve done it drives me insane.
MultipleOrgasmDonor@reddit
For me it’s a regular cruise control thing, I give the brake a quick tap to cancel it when approaching slower traffic, even if I don’t actually use the brakes to slow down
JunkMilesDavis@reddit
I totally get it in that situation. Around here, we have some hilly terrain and pretty sparse traffic most of the time, so I see a lone car up ahead occasionally hit the brakes, and wonder if they saw an animal coming out of the woods or a state trooper around the next curve. There are a few stretches where I see it happen more than others even though the hills aren't steep enough for gravity to pull you over the speed limit, so it's just a mildly irritating mystery.
c_is_forcookie@reddit
I totally understand and it drives me crazy too. That being said, as a new owner of an EV, I have no idea when my brake lights come on with Regen braking in 1 pedal driving mode. I could see that being a significant cause of this phenomenon. I tend to not use 1 pedal mode on the highway mostly for this reason.
Longjumping_Affect22@reddit
I think this might be an ACC thing, at least I've certainly been wondering myself if it is.
I use ACC for my morning commute and if I'm behind someone and their speed slows, my brakes are automatically applied to keep a safe follow distance even if they themselves simply let off their gas and didn't brake.

Not accelerating in the acceleration lane to match the speed of the traffic they are merging with. I am willing to whoa up a little to let someone in, but not to the point where I am a hazard. If you are stopping in the acceleration lane, you deserve to wait.
bruh_the_person@reddit
I hate how slow some people accelerate from a stop, I understand some people are just trying to save gas, but it makes absolutely no sense when people do it in EVs with all the instant torque they get
AlecsThorne@reddit
I think this actually affects other drivers though, but I totally agree. Also, the same thing but for overtaking, when they change lanes and they move at the same speed (or same speed +1) as the care they're "trying" to overtake.
*To be clear, I'm not talking about drivers who don't want to go over the speed limit, I'm talking about cars that, for example are behind a truck/lorry which already moves well under the speed limit, but, because the driver doesn't want to be behind it, changes lanes and drivers at the same lower speed.
melodic-abalone-69@reddit
Omfg I always run into this in Oklahoma for some reason.
I don't get it.
I don't want to be right next to a semi trailer for miles... Especially in a state with a lot of wind! Who would??
Safer to speed up a bit to pass them quickly than to poke along in their blind spot, right next to them for literal miles while pissing off everyone behind you.
AlecsThorne@reddit
Yeah exactly. I don't care if people wanna drive slow as long as they use the first line. If you wanna overtake someone, you obviously need to speed up at least a little. If not, you're just blocking the lane, which can be incredibly risky on motorways
TheMunkeeFPV@reddit
You got it backwards. EV will tell you to do this. It wants you to accelerate slowly because it’s energy efficient. When they are self driving they accelerate themselves slowly too. Often there are visuals of some kind that incentivize you to accelerate slower. It’s a thing…
Uber1337pyro333@reddit
75 year old dude in a track ready corvette next to my shitbox volvo
takes off at the speed of a snail and proceeds to take 5 miles to reach 45mph
jrileyy229@reddit
Huh? It makes all the sense in the world in an EV... They're trying to save battery.
If your logic is that people are trying to save money doing it in a gas car.... And that's deemed okay by you as the apparent judge and jury here... Then people in an EV are doing the same thing. trying to save money by using less electricity + trying to have to deal with the inconvenience of having to go sit at the charger for 30 minutes less frequently.
Charging the car still costs money... I don't know why you think it's free... And Lots of people rely on public charging, which is even more expensive. on a per mile basis it's not really much cheaper than a small economy car like a Corolla.
Prhime@reddit
This highly depends in where you live. Around here electricity is comically cheap compared to gas and most EV drivers, myself included, charge at home and/or at work so they never have to worry about range or charging time.
jrileyy229@reddit
I understand that, but the fact remains it still costs money... And some people near you are using public charging.. Anyone that only has street parking or lives in an apartment or whatever, are relying on public charging.
and that public charging costs significantly more and is significantly more inconvenient.
So to universally say "EVs should all be rocketing away from lights with all that torque" is silly.
Prhime@reddit
Youre not wrong but still I'm just as annoyed by it as OP. We're talking about irrational pet peeves after all right? haha
Also btw I do live in an apartment and use public charging, but I live in Europe... in my neighborhood every single street light has a charging port and electricty is highly subsidized. Also no taxes on EVs so I'm saving so much money compared to dailying an ICE car I just dont care whether Im spending 10 or 15 Euros on charging a week.
jrileyy229@reddit
That's pretty cool, didn't know Europe was so advanced in their adoption of public convenience and charging
Prhime@reddit
I mean this is in no way universal across Europe to be fair. Generally as a German I consider my country to be embarassingly far behind the Nordics or the Dutch, but yeah there has been noticeable progress over the past couple of years.
bruh_the_person@reddit
It’s significantly cheaper to charge your EV where I live, and more often than not, people with EVs have more money. EVs use less energy in stop and go situations than gas cars…. and most EV owners where I live charge at home where it’s pretty much dirt cheap, I mean i cant really imagine a situation where someone without money to burn would buy an EV and couldn’t even charge it at home
jrileyy229@reddit
Uhh, when Teslas were popular, lots of people bought them who don't own a home with a charger... Especially when the EV credit was going away

harrisonfender@reddit
People who do 50 in a 40 zone then continue to do 50 in a 70 zone. Just, why?
pretty-late-machine@reddit
There's a state route near me where everyone likes to go slow or constantly vary their speed by 20 MPH for absolutely no reason at all, and there are very few opportunities for passing. Before getting on this road, you'll pass them on the highway, where they're doing 50 in a 55. Then you both go on the state route, where the speed limit is 40. Suddenly, you're a massive asshole for going 50, so they'll tailgate you until they can make a semi-legal pass, narrowly avoiding a collision with opposing traffic. Then the speed limit increases to 50, and they go 45. And you're behind them for 1 hour.
GilesD-WRC@reddit
In the UK it’s the “40 everywhere” crowd. Especially on county roads.
60 limit? do 40, break for EVERY corner AND every oncoming vehicle, then back up to 40. Unless there’s a straight with nothing oncoming then 55…
30 limit? Do 40. 20? Do 40.
Shooshplz@reddit
Braking for no reason instead of just letting off the gas.
Seeing traffic up ahead and still speeding all the way up till they hit the traffic, if everyone just didn't do that there would be less traffic.

When the light turn green they let off the brake and let their car idle forward for a sec before they start accelerating, really fucks me up in the manual cuz they start movin, then i start movin, but then they aint movin.

Oooh, possible chance for me to learn something- as someone who generally isn't trying to be a problem on the road lol
"Seeing traffic up ahead and still speeding all the way up till they hit the traffic, if everyone just didn't do that there would be less traffic."
I'll be totally honest, and maybe this is just work exhaustion, but I don't entirely see the issue here. Is there any chance you would be willing to explain how the dynamics work in this situation, between keeping the same pace until the flow of traffic is disrupted ahead and, what, slowing way down preemptively? I'm genuinely interested in this :)
Mouse_Manipulator@reddit
Less slowing down for no reason = less traffic

Also the number one pet peeve of mine while driving manual is when people come to a stop and realize they have soo much space infront of them to the forward... then forward... then forward until you are the one with the large gap and now feel pressured to put the car in gear because the person infront of you can't judge distance.

Passing lane puzzies/ quarter panel c-unts

PaperBeneficial@reddit
Oh my God the inconsistent throttle input gives me high blood pressure. My sister does that and I cannot drive with her because of it. She also regularly drives 5 to 10 mph under the speed limit, doesn't pull forward into the intersection when making a left turn, and here's the kicker, she barely ever uses her turn signal. She's so safety conscious, but not mindful of other people's safety by using her turn signal. It really encapsulates her personality perfectly. 🤣😂
scumbagstaceysEx@reddit
People that use their signals properly but then pull left to turn right or pull right to turn left. Like, ok you’re signaling so I’m not gonna pass you on that side; but what the fuck are you doing? If you’re not towing a trailer there’s never a reason to do this.

Sort of don't have one. Everything I have an irrational pet peeve on regarding driving also affects me... And usually everyone else.
I hate when people stop to let others pull out when they don't have full control over all of the lanes... Because that's one of the leading causes of accidents in this area of the country.
I hate when people don't pay attention so it makes it so everyone can't get through the light. Not just me but everyone around me.
But I don't think these are pet peeves as much as an overall appreciation of driving versus disliking those who suck at it...
mrrichardhn@reddit

mrrichardhn@reddit

myco_lion@reddit

AgonizingGasPains@reddit
After losing a child in an auto accident, speeding. Most people are morons that don't realize speeding doesn't get you there any quicker, really, but it increases risk exponentially.
If you need to drive ten miles:
10 mph gets you there in 1 hour. Every increase by 10 mph doubles risk of death by current NHTSA estimates.
15 mph = 40 min.
20 mph = 30 min, 2x risk
25 mph = 24 min.
30 mph = 20 min. 4x risk
35 mph = 17 min.
40 mph = 15 min. 8x risk
45 mph = 14 min,
50 mph = 12 min, 16x risk
55 mph = 11 min.
60 mph = 10 min. 32x risk
65 mph = 9:23
70 mph = 8:57 64x risk
75 mph = 8 min.
80 mph = 7:30 min, 128x risk
85 mph = 7:06
90 mph = 6:32 min, 256x risk
95 mph = 6:21
100 mph = 6 min., 512x risk
So, when I see people doing 80 in a 70 zone, that difference over ten miles is less than a minute and a half, but at 128 times the risk (to them and everyone else on the road), unless of course they end up pulled over, or in a single fireball.
AggressiveKing8314@reddit
Sorry for your loss but how can you say speeding doesn’t get you there any quicker and then in detail show just the opposite?
AgonizingGasPains@reddit
The point is that speeding is "diminishing returns" while risk goes up exponentially. Going 80 in a 70, only saves you 58 seconds in 10 miles. Is that worth it? Most trips are less than 20 miles.

I can definitely smell it when someone in the car in front of me is smoking. It seems like a ridiculous claim but it’s quite realistic especially if you’re in a convertible but even if you’re just driving without the air on recirc
I smoke btw, so I’m not sure if that makes me more or less sensitive to smelling it
Swamp_Hawk_420@reddit

On a busy highway road with a center turning lane: Slam on braks > turn signal > slowly enter center turning lane, usually stopping to wait with a quarter panel still in traffic.
For anyone confused, you're supposed to signal > get completely into the center turning lane > then hit your brakes. Thats why they have center lanes, so you dont have to cause 20 people to brake and swerve at 50 mph to turn into fucking Home Goods or the Piggly Wiggly.

People who stop behind a car at a red light like 2-3 car lengths back and then move up a tiny bit after like 10 seconds while the light is still red. Even worse is stopping too far behind the stop line that the sensors in the road don’t activate so the light never changes until I get to the light
kyson1@reddit
I pulled up behind a lady in a left turn lane, she's stopped way back from the line, we go through two full rotations of the lights and she doesn't pull up at all to trip the sensor. I couldn't go around in a fully loaded semi, starting off up hill, had to set the brakes and get out, walk up to her, and tell her to pull up to the line so the lights change. She was completely oblivious I was standing at her window until I knocked, like the lights were on but no ones home. It was at least 15 years ago off of I80 in PA, and I still remember it like yesterday it irritated me so much.

SubGothius@reddit
Then again, if I had a nickel for every time I tried such a turn into the nearest lane and got honked at, or even nearly crashed into, by the other driver who wanted to make a wide turn into that same lane... well, I'd have maybe a buck two-eighty, but it happens often enough that I don't take for granted that they'll turn into their nearest lane like they should.
Blu_yello_husky@reddit
Thats why I say my other pet peeves are illegal left/right turns, referring to exactly that. If you are turning left onto a 2 lane road, you ALWAYS turn into the left lane. If you dont, thats an illegal left turn and youre an asshole and an idiot. When I have this happen to me, I honk back and give them the finger. Controversial but drivers that look back on their kids as they’re driving. Look I understand driving with kids is hazardous, but driving up a small suburban street and a parent has half their body wrapped around their seat trying to help their kid with food or a toy whilst in motion, isn’t any safer.
I worked in motor vehicle fatality investigations (not police, insurance) and many accidents were caused initially from being distracted from their kids. One case I had a male, driving his four kids and wife, tried to discipline his kid whilst driving on a back rural road. He swerved and hit a new teen driver, which then resulted in the loss of life for his family and the teen. Coroner’s report confirmed he was the only survivor.
May be an extreme pet peeve but I feel feral every time I see a distracted parent/adult driving.

In a city, definitely lack of anticipation and gap control. If you're paying attention, especially a city you live in, you should know traffic patterns... You should be off the brake starting to creep as you see the other direction go red... Or the traffic in the turning lanes begin to stop.
And when it goes green, people do not need to let 6 car lengths happen in front of them before they begin to accelerate. You end up with only 50% of the number of cars getting through the light than if everyone has basic driving skills and kept a 1-2 length gap.

I have so many and they all affect me. (Btw, OP, it’s “affects” you, not effects you.) Here’s some: Braking on a downhill for no reason. People flipping you off for their mistake or bad driving. Not realizing your blinkers are on for miles. Having no idea how to navigate a circle/roundabout, especially who has the right of way. Leaving a gap open when stopped to let people turn across your lane is a dangerous thing to do. Drivers using the break down lanes in stop-and-go traffic to pass people. Not understanding what a blinking yellow/red means. Drivers going down the wrong way on a one way traffic and expecting you to move for them. People saving parking spots by standing in them and the car not showing up for 5 mins. People not turning their lights on when it rains or it’s dusk. People’s dogs roaming around in the vehicle, not belted down nor in a crate…so dangerous. Handicap parking abusers and when you call them out on it, it’s like it’s your fault instead of theirs. 4 way stop signs…who goes first, some of you have no clue. If you’re hauling things in your vehicle, make sure everything is tied down and won’t fly out and hit you when you’re behind. If you’re driving leisurely in the passing (left) lane, GTFO of the way until you’re turning left soon.

When someone turns their steering wheel while they're stopped, before they start moving.
Maybe the steering components are built well enough today that it doesn't matter in the long run. At one point it was a concern of adding extra unnecessary stress to those components. Much less forces involved if you're at least barely rolling when you turn the wheel.
