Does anyone remember when their grandparents were wearing those dark, blocky sunglasses over their glasses?
Posted by magicpenny@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 279 comments
So apparently, the older half of Gen Z has come up with the brilliant idea to make sunglasses that go over actual glasses. They’re not nearly as hideous as the ones our grandparents wore in the 80s but the idea is still the same. Has anyone seen them advertised yet? They keep popping up on my Insta reels. These are as ridiculous as seeing mullets come back.
AllenKll@reddit
I wore them from time to time.. after eye surgery... and when I couldn't find my prescription sunglasses.
RazzleP@reddit
I always called them "Graminators" and I'm sure one day I will wear them without shame. But not yet. Not yet.
Objective-Badger8674@reddit
That's amazing. We called them "Terminator Shades" and now I'm sad that I still wasn't able to come up with "Graminators" myself 🤣🤣

My friend dubbed that commercial with the dude doing the rap over some beats (basically had a tape with some beats on the ready along with another blank tape ready to record both when the commercial came on). We used to cruise fri and sat night and periodically pop this in and watch everyone around us in their cars laugh uncontrollably 😂
itgoesineasy@reddit
My dad got a pair of them after he had his eyes dilated at the eye doctor for. He wore them for a while and my mom told him he looked like an old man in them. They went in the trash.

Did anyone wear those outside of the V the Final Battle cast?

cpbaby1968@reddit
I’m wearing them now and for the foreseeable future.
I had cataract surgery on my right eye last week and will be getting it on my left eye in 2 weeks. You have to wear the blocking glasses or you’ll burn your retinas.

My late client, a woman who was 91, had a pair of those. She would wear them driving (!!). I used to call them her "Geri glasses". She laughed.

Yes. Yes I do remember. My mind has not turned to mush yet.

I have those in my car. They're brilliant. I actually only discovered them a couple of years ago.

I call them geezer glasses
hu_gnew@reddit
For me they're geezer goggles
hu_gnew@reddit
The ones they gave me after cataract surgery have little windows in the side to preserve peripheral vision.
Demostecles@reddit
I used to wear these in my 20’s.
If I bought prescription sunglasses, they were always promptly lost.
These solved that problem during top down driving, though they were much more streamlined.

UraTargetMarket@reddit
Yeah, I want a pair of these. And it’s my parents and not my grandparents. Anyway, where do I get them?
hu_gnew@reddit
Walmart Optical sells them. You can get them with yellow lenses if you like (improves night vision).

Yup. My Grandfather, especially, was a regular user of those things back then. I started using them in my late teens, for driving on bright days. Problem with them is they seem to accumulate scratches just by sitting in a drawer and… existing.

Neakhanie@reddit
I think those giant ones in the photo are designed like that because it was thought they would/Could prevent macular degeneration. It wasn’t just to have sunglasses over regular prescription glasses. It was to eliminate as much light as possible from as many angles as possible.
tragicsandwichblogs@reddit
I thought they were a post-cataract surgery thing.
Neakhanie@reddit
Dunno, there were hella lot of people wearing them back in the day. Does everybody get cataract surgery when they get old?
But in any case, they were medicinal in some way and not just sunglasses over prescription eyeglasses.
the_kid1234@reddit

Turbulent-Local5054@reddit
I found the cute Amazon ones last summer. They are so awesome! I need my regular progressive/trifocals to even see shit. I always feel like I don’t get enough light in most prescription sunglasses to see well (due to cataracts forming, I’m 60) and I really hate the self-darkening ones. The cute ones solve many issues for me.

magicpenny@reddit (OP)
If they’re medically necessary they should definitely be worn, without a doubt. That’s not really what I’m referring to. I just recall my grandparents wearing them thinking they were stylish. I remember myself and my cousins always laughing at grandpa and his clunky over-the-glasses sunglasses. The newer versions are much more sleek and stylish. I’m just amazed that things I thought would never come back, but have. These and the mullet were two things. I never saw making a return.
Cinisajoy2@reddit
Did they say they were stylish? Or were they just practical?
Now what amazes me are people wearing clothes that look like they should be in the rag bag. Back during the baggy pants revolution, I asked a kid who gave him his pants as they looked 3 sizes too big. He told me what he had paid for them.
DaoFerret@reddit
Same thing happened when “distressed clothing” went through fashion.

CountHonorius@reddit
Absolutely. These are driving essentials.
TankApprehensive3053@reddit
I'm looking at modern versions on amazon because of some comments here. Many are much smaller now. They don't look like they have enough room to fit over glasses.
I have prescription sunglasses and a clip-on for a non-prescription pair. The clip-on is good as it looks the same as the glasses shape.
_ism_@reddit
i've bought a lot of what amazon offers for fit-over lenses and while they weren't great, they were good enough to throw in my car as backups or don't mind if i lose it at the beach pairs. seriously use them all the time
DaoFerret@reddit
Solar Shield work well.
my M.i.L. uses them all the time, so I’ve gotten to see and try them on even though I don’t use them.
TankApprehensive3053@reddit
I could see them as a backup for sure. My clip-ons only fit that one pair of glasses. That pr also has transitions tint but that doesn't help when driving, hence needing clip-ons.
An optometrist office gave me a thin plastic to slip behind lenses for the drive home after dilating my eyes. It's not dark enough but cuts the glare while not being huge.

MyDearBrotherNumpsay@reddit
It's for when the optometrist puts drops in your eyes to dilate your pupils to examine them. Your eyes can't adjust to daylight for a few hours. So they give you these dope ass sunglasses.
_ism_@reddit
those are the disposables of these. they look the same on front but have flimsy arms. it feels like you're wearing 35mm film strip on your face.

They're not ridiculous. I have a pair of Solar Shield sunglasses that fit over my regular glasses and I love them. I think they look good too. They've also been around forever because I've been using them since the early 2000s.
Lizbeth-73@reddit
Hey! I wear these!
Ambitious_Stuff_910@reddit
I was always scared of old people who wore these!!!! Like I wasn’t sure if they were blind/couldn’t see well.OR they didn’t have eyeballs
zalurker@reddit
My mom had a prescription pair she wore over her normal glasses. She'd been diagnosed with Wet Macular Degeneration and was told to always wear them in sunlight.
ResJudicata_HL@reddit
My mom too. And I was just diagnosed with it. Looks like I get to wear the cool glasses now…sigh.
zalurker@reddit
Good luck. At least they've made lots of progress in treating it.
BeebsMuhQueen@reddit
I was just talking to my husband about my grandma wearing these back then…a couple days ago lol. (I bought a sun visor, and was telling him how much better and protective UV hats are these days to better protect the eyes and less tacky looking than 80s visors)
TechnicolorTechbot@reddit
I wear these now. Cheap plastic ones from Amazon for around $10. So much easier/cheaper than maintaining 2 or pairs of Rx sunglasses. (One in each car.)
Witty-Atmosphere-211@reddit
My mom does but she has Lupus and the sun bothers her
The_Spectacle@reddit
they look like the 3D glasses that came with the Sega Master System
Diela1968@reddit
You mean the ones your eye doctor gives you when your eyes get dilated?

Mr_SunnyBones@reddit
Overglasses? I use these , great for driving
ONROSREPUS@reddit
Shit, my dad was wearing these a year ago. My mom has the auto darkening lenses.
Ceorl_Lounge@reddit
To this day I think of "V" every time I see wraparound sunglasses. So if you start wearing those and having a hankering for Guinea Pigs check to make sure you aren't an alien lizard person.
Forest_of_Cheem@reddit
I have some that I wear over my glasses. I got them on Amazon last year. This year when I updated my prescription, I got a regular pair and a pair of sunnies. I have terrible eyes (I wear progressives), and my chronic illnesses have made my eyes very sensitive to light.
nigevellie@reddit
I wear these.
SbIrish574@reddit
Blue blockers..... get you some 😆 🤣 😂
Responsible_Name1217@reddit
The wife has 3 pair. :(
No-Profession422@reddit
I was given those the last time I had my eyes dilated.
Carrollz@reddit
The only reason we aren't seeing these more still is thanks to transition lenses. I always wore big sunglasses before my aging eyes demanded progressives and if I didn't have transitions I would 100% be getting myself a pair of these.
PissedCaucasian@reddit
Don’t they still do that?
MarchOk5420@reddit
My Dad's brand was called Solar Shields and yes, he looked ridiculous.
1043b@reddit
My dad still wears these on the regular. He also has a pair in yellow for nightime driving.
NGL I wore them when I had a migraine in the car, they were great
designocoligist@reddit
I have the yellow ones they work great for night driving
digital_mystic23@reddit
Naw, but I remember Kool Moe Dee! 😂😁
Hilsam_Adent@reddit
How ya like me now?
Weird to think he had an almost twenty year career that ended in 1994. Ol' Mohandas Dewese was doin' it before almost anyone.
If we're going back to early '80s rap, I gotta tip my hat to Kurtis Blow, the illest of the ill (at the time).
TheFoxtail1977@reddit
My grandma had to wear those in the early 80s due to glaucoma. She drove around in her light blue Chevy Sprint and could be seen clear as day while chain-smoking with all the windows sealed. All my friends and classmates in elementary school teased me relentlessly saying Grandma looked like a space alien. My grandma was pretty much my caretaker too, which made it suck worse. My grandma was also the housekeeper of the priest's rectory for a Catholic Church. Very small town south or Door county in Wisconsin.
KerrAvonJr@reddit
BluBlockers!
plathrop01@reddit
Hell, my parents wear them now when driving during the day.
squarebody8675@reddit
I’m never getting that old😫
theShpydar@reddit
I have a pair that my Dad had left over from his cataract surgery. I keep them in the car; since I wear glasses, it's nice to have them when hitting a drive where the sun is right in front of you.
As a kid, I wished I had a pair of these, since I was a huge fan of "V". 😁
Superb_Astronomer_59@reddit
I called them Granny Welding Goggles
EzAeMy@reddit
Those still exist. Primarily for people who are visually impaired or blind and need the wrap around. Granted, we have more attractive ones, but these still live on at my job.
SurfyBraun@reddit
Yes. I thought of the m as Robocop shades.
I keep a modern, smaller pair in my truck to go over my glasses, but they are not the same.
ReddituserXIII@reddit
Yoko Ono specs. Ugh
Moody_Immortal_1@reddit
Yes, I called them Glaucoma glasses. And because of that, I'll probably end up with a pair at some point LOL
