Do people still buy Adult content magazines?
Posted by BrilliantInfamous759@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 165 comments
A few days ago, I was at a petrol station in a pretty large city. Right opposite the counter I noted 4-5 porn magazine. I was shocked as I have not seen those kind of magazine since early 2000's. Especially with the rise of internet I was bemused!
So my question is, are people still buying porn mags?
thegerbilmaster@reddit
Parents had a newsagent in the past decade, we still sold 5-10 a month to regulars.
They were all 60+.
Used to like gandering at the readers' wives when it came in.
elementarydrw@reddit
Ever seen a guy with long, thinning hair, a wispy moustache, a shell suit and some ill-fitting glasses?
Him. He's buying them.
Aggravating-Delay792@reddit
Could it be that a magazine would be easier to hide than forgetting to clear the website off the browser history.... just saying š
TapeDeckSlick@reddit
Truck drivers maybe? Unless old people are dusting one out still
CumGuzlinGutterSluts@reddit
I have one that I got signed by a friend because she was on the cover! Its a prized possession of mine

feckarse-drinkgirls@reddit
Truck drivers have smartphones like the rest of us
mildyinconvenient@reddit
Actually, not all of them. Tankers have very strict rules on electronic devices. That being said, I think those same tankers carrying the volatile cargo that prohibits such devices also require a chaperone, so that could be an awkward moment pulling out a mag.
Sburns85@reddit
Tanker drivers do have phones in the cab. And donāt need a chaperone. At least for petroleum products. It sure about other hazardous material transports
mildyinconvenient@reddit
Iām not one of them so donāt know much, just know somebody does hazardous materials. Heās mentioned having someone with him before, but no idea if thatās a requirement all the time. I think Iād need someone to talk to me if Iām not allowed my podcasts though!!
Reetgeist@reddit
I'm sure there could be measures like that around extremely high hazard material, but I've worked around low to middling hazchems my entire career and I've not seen that.
Sburns85@reddit
I used to work in a petrol station. And spoke to dozens of drivers. Also got a friend who drove to Grangemouth and delivered to stations.
SnooMacarons4225@reddit

Maybe there are hipster gooners that are returning to them because they're "more authentic than the internet stuff", like what happened with vinyl.Ā

Maybe itās just the last of the old stock, like September 2014 issue or something.
Next time you are in there grab them all off the shelf, have a look and see what the issue number/dates are, and if they are old issues you should take them to the counter and point that out to the cashier and ask for a discount

Oh god, this has reminded me of after my brother passed, clearing his flat and having to go through items his little sister should never have seen.... His magazines were, crunchy! He died about 15 years ago, at 35 years old.
He also had an impressive VHS porn stash. But i knew about that from when he lived at home haha!
Gerrards_Cross@reddit
How did he die so young
InternationalRich150@reddit
Blood clot travelled to his heart, cardiac arrest. Just dropped dead. Cliche but he was fit and healthy, didnt drink, they think it was a medication he took for mental issues.

Alternative_Driver30@reddit
My experience was just the opposite., having mostly watched vids or GIFs, it was strange to see a still image of all the bits in such detail. I was used to seeing them in action and expected the same, it made me realise how much media influences and impacts our minds.
InternationalRich150@reddit
Im old enough to remember the Daily Sport newspaper. Haha. Lots of tits and bits in there, nothing left to the imagination!
It does amuse me that porn used to be something you hid under your mattress and now you can just search it on your phone at work.
S3F_83@reddit
Ahh the Daily Sport. Classic Coming across those in my Dadās work van was gold back then!
Badlydressedgirl@reddit
Yep! I work in a sex shop and we sell magazines. We sell many many more DVDS.

will17blitz@reddit
Or in the woods. Rewatching old Mock the Weeks/8 out of 10 Cats comedians like Sean Lock and Ed Byrne bemoan the demise of forest porn, where you could find crumpled up skin mags in the 'undergrowth', lol.
LukeLikesReddit@reddit
I actually have a funny story about that aha. We built a little camp site in our local woods and slowly added chairs etc and started a tree house. Well one day I find a bag with about 10 odd mags in it by our site. After me and the lads had a look i took it into school and was treated like a king for a week until some dumb fuck got caught with one and ratted me out.
Thinking about it now yeah kinda gross some bloke used our camping spot as a wanking spot but hey his loss in the end.
will17blitz@reddit
Exploring as scouts (or cubs? I was 9 or 10), we found a 'spread' of them in a clearing. Didn't really know what we were looking at and they were quickly removed by older boys. Never forgot though.

Some cornershops near me still have them - I guess for people who are either not tech savvy enough to hide their browsing, or tech literate enough to use devices or who do not feel confident enough looking for stuff - maybe a parent, spouse or employer keeps tight tabs on their devices*.
Look at all the times people have accidentally 'liked' an adult website on their public account, or 'accidentally' ordered a porn movie (Ron?) or never travel the web beyond the walled garden of Facebook. I think being an online person (and having an account on Reddit qualifies you as such) makes you forget how tech unsavvy folks are.
Plus people have weird relationships with porn - they might like the lo-fi style of paper, or the reassurance that someone else has curated the photos - 'It's not their weird kink, it just happened to be in the issue!' or they don't want to risk seeing anything outside of their comfort zone - on some sites a miss-click will take you from softcore to extreme hardcore - or beyond their fetish - if only Pregnant Asian Piano Teachers in leather boots will do then get a magazine which specialises in it. Hell, maybe the crossword is really good?
Some people with specific tastes also don't trust the electronic trail and don't want to join forums, get logins, share credit card data etc.
If they get post-masturbation guilt or shame they can easily throw away a magazine and tell themselves that that is the last time and that their shameful secret is very distinct from their regular life and not worry themselves sick when someone explains 'History' 'Cookies' or 'Keyloggers' etc to them. I guess it's more stressful if you're from a restrictive background - e.g. you like lgbt+ porn in a homophobic culture, or your culture considers pornography a sin, immoral or exploitative.
I guess also that sometimes the wifi or internet connection is shit in a lonely hotel room or truck cabin or oil rig or camping. Or prison? I guess magazines are probably posted to inmates there?
I wonder if you could ask the same question for why people read any printed magazines if the info is also there online - to support the magazine? Or for very specialised hobbyist knowledge? To read on the bus? (Possibly not true for porn.)
*If your kink is for tight tabs on your devices there is a site for that.
Odd-Gear-1325@reddit
I've been a web developer for 25 years and am extremely online, but a magazine is better for the brain.
It's like anything now. I have access to thousands of games and movies and can find dedicating myself to something tough - when I had 1 or 2 games a year I'd really appreciate them.
Imperator_Helvetica@reddit
Yes, I'd agree. A physical book does stimulate in ways that a pdf doesn't.
I'd also agree with the restriction of choice directing focus better - I know there have been lots of studies about choice paralysis. With games - some older games demanded the 'whole summer' focus on them, but nowadays I feel i barely have chance to scratch the surface of some.
Odd-Gear-1325@reddit
I do! 42 year old man.
A few years ago I had a vasectomy, and needed to go to the hospital and picked up a couple of magazines the news agents near me. I got a Mayfair and a Club International.
I actually really appreciated the fact that A, they were not super hardcore porn, and B, each shoot has like 6 different, high quality pictures rather than just an endless stream.
I've now, almost entirely stopped watching porn videos, and pick up the occasional magazine when I'm away for work.
I actually think it's more healthy than endless 4k hardcore online porn.
The only issue is that not many places sell them any more, and it is a bit annoying waiting to buy them when the shop is busy - I wouldn't want to make anyone uncomfortable.
Odd-Gear-1325@reddit
Other downside - they do build up and you realise you have a big pile of porn, so I make use of the shredder occasionally!!
No, I'm not going to leave them in the woods. I'll get on a list.

Reminds me, way back in a more analogue age, a flatmate of mine's godmother had a job which involved her writing those "true confession" stories that "readers" had sent in to Escort/Mayfair/random80sgrotmag and the publishing company would always send her a copy of the magazine that her work appeared in. She had quite the collection until one day, she left them out for the bin men.
She said that the conversations she overheard from them made her laugh her tits off.
