Bitchin' Camaro

Who had an '80s Z-28, or IROC Camaro back in the day?
I saw one this morning, (in pretty good shape for being a 40 year old car!) My 16-year-old self whispered "I still want one."
Santeeoldman@reddit
I drove it up from the Bahamas
twistedivy@reddit
You’re kidding.
Rage_est_1969@reddit
I had a 82 Firebird.
GOPJay@reddit
I had one. My parents drove it up from the Bahamas.

What’s the Sand Bar?

A place that lets kids drink!

Saw them play many years ago. Got to hear the Halloween Story about throwing a body double in front of a police car. The keyboardist was so high they had to have a girl put fo ghe crowd take over. Epic concert.

No Camaro, but I do have Big Lizard In My Backyard on vinyl sitting next to me

I still have the original copy I bought used for $3.98 when I was 14

EmperorSkyTiger@reddit
Yeah, about that. Now you're in all the papers.
mkddy@reddit
I still remember seeing them play on the steps of our gym in college. Saw so many cool upcoming bands like that back in the day. Do they even do that stuff anymore on campuses?
Slotter-that-Kid@reddit
My name actually is Stuart and I dove a bitching camero and married my punk rock girl.
EmperorSkyTiger@reddit
You know what, Stuart? I like you! You're not like everyone else... here... in the trailer park. Seen them burrow owls lately?
Erok2112@reddit
Sometimes when I see a hole in the ground I think "They live in a hole, in the ground. Why the hell do you think they call them burrow owls anyway?"

pjtexas1@reddit
I had an 82 firebird. Put in a 350 from an old Nova, turbo 350 trans and lots of work. Miss that car all the time.
woundtight@reddit
‘80 Z-28. Slower than it looked, but not a bad ride.
PutridWorth938@reddit
My older bro (64/boomer) had a 69 camaro, primer Grey with many patches of bondo, that he called his bitchin' Camaro

youngkpepper@reddit
I didn't appreciate the Camaro until recently.
I've got a 2022 Camaro named Rodney Anonymous. I played Bitchin' Camaro on the way home from the dealership.
GenkiElite@reddit
I had a 79 and 83 5.0 in high school but I really wanted a Camaro. I ended up getting a 98 z28 and a 16 SS. I sold the SS and got a Civic because it was a pointless car to drive back and forth to work. Being a responsible adult is so boring.
jdewith@reddit
Dear Lord! That had to be HORRIBLE, hopping into a Civic from an SS.
GenkiElite@reddit
Yeah, but it was easier getting the boy in and out of his car seat lol.
Alisterguitardevil@reddit
I had a 78 Berlinetta and I wish I still had it!
Late_Homework_2705@reddit
Camaros were not cool cars where I grew up.
COVID19Blues@reddit
Never had one. My dream car from my teen years is a 1987 Buick Grand National (GNX). I got into a bidding war at an auction for a beautiful example but the price got into ‘bidding with my emotions’ territory instead of bidding with my common sense. I’ll find one eventually.
Temporary-Art-7078@reddit
You and me both. Dream car of the 80’s : GNX. I had a 5.0 mustang GT but wanted a GNX.
COVID19Blues@reddit
Prices are getting RIDICULOUS, unfortunately.

Brief_Run4355@reddit
My first new car was a 1980 Z-28 350 4bbl 4 speed (purchaced in 1981, I just turned 16). Chose it over a 1980 Corvette because it had a back seat, lol. Crazy story, I found out around the mid 90's that one of my friends actually owned the same Vette I decided not to buy. He sold it to a young guy in the early 2000's, that young fella wrote it off in an accident about 3 weeks later. I still to this day regret selling my Z-28 more than any other car I have ever owned.
Fitz_2112b@reddit
1980 Camaro here. Last model before they changed over to the awful IROC body style
Austindg4me@reddit
Nope, had an 81 Z28 that was the last of the old body style. 82 was the new IROC 305ci style.
Fitz_2112b@reddit
Yes, hence why I said last model and not last year. They changed the body styles every 2 years back then so I am well aware that 1980 and 1981 were basically the same car
Austindg4me@reddit
I was thinking 80 model year. They were almost the same. Stripes might’ve been different.
ThisCharmingDan99@reddit
1981 was the last of the second gen. I have one. Looks pretty much identical to the 1980. Same graphics and functional air induction cowl hood.
Wyremills@reddit
Past your cutoff date but my 97 Z28 was the 30th anniversary edition.
Motor_Ad_4427@reddit
Brand new 85 midnight blue z28 polished aluminum wheels then I had a kid and a car seat didn't go with my bachelor car lol
Suspicious_Lab_8700@reddit
79 Z/28 Blue over tan cloth interior. Still my overall favorite Camaro body style the late Gen 2s. - and my first new car was a 92 Camaro RS 25th Anniversary that I bought in Germany through GM Military Sales.
Just picked up a 2024 Camaro RS. :)
7GrenciaMars@reddit
I thought you were referencing the Dead Milkmen song. My friend had a Camaro back in the day, but I have no idea what model it was. Hers definitely was not a top-tier vehicle.
Adaminium@reddit
Like you, I had a Big Lizard in My Backyard.
7GrenciaMars@reddit
Actually, my mind goes straight to a song of theirs with a title I wouldn't even want to repeat today.
Im_a_shepherd@reddit
Head on collision, bodies everywhere!
Wactout@reddit
Had a 93. Loved that thing. Sold it ten years ago to fix our roof.
GhostFour@reddit
I had a 76, an 84, and a 1998. I work in automotive transport and get to drive a lot of cars and occasionally I'll get to drive a "classic". Every time I see a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or even 4th gen Camaro I get excited. Then I have to climb in and out of the damn thing. I used to pop in and out of those cars like a jack-in-the-box but I couldn't look cool doing it these days if my life depended on it.
New-Perception-9754@reddit
I had an '85 RS. It was gorgeous. But MY GOD, what a lemon!
The starter was, for some bizarre reason, mounted directly UNDER the engine block. The heat from the engine would cook the starters. You'd have to take it to a dealer and have the engine hoisted out to change a $20 starter!
Lots of bugs in the engine controls- altimeters, things like that.
If you just want a maintenance issue on wheels, go on and buy one. But an MGB is way more fun- and collectible!
AIR2369@reddit
My uncle had an ‘85 IROC, the first year they made it. Wrapped it around a telephone pole and almost killed himself.

bandley3@reddit
No, but I test drove one. I drove a Rabbit GTI at the time and was thinking about an upgrade so I tried the Z28. Nope - not for me. Too big outside, too small inside, heavy. I was more into the European scene and despite the acceleration the Camaro just didn’t appeal to my sensibilities.
No-Onion8029@reddit
84 Berlinetta. Very pretty. Deathtrap on wet roads.
NPHighview@reddit
When I met my now-wife of 45+ years, she had a red Camaro convertible with black leather interior - a fun car! Unfortunately, this was in the Midwest, in the 1970s, and in winter. Snow and slush would splash up through the gaping holes in the floor, wheel wells, and quarter panels.
EddieKroman@reddit
My father traveled a lot for business in the 1980’s, and he got to drive a lot of different rental cars. His all time least favorite car was the Camaro. I drove a couple of them and they were unimpressive.

They call me Camaro because I ROC!
RevBeardman@reddit
80's F-body cars sucked. The only car worse was the fourth gen models. Third gen was where it's at. Good ol' duck butt Camaros. Had a '78 with a big block, holly 4-barrel, straight pipes, shift kitted TH400 trans, and no floor. Body was twisted too, on account of too much torque and HP for the severe rot. Stupid fun car for a time when gas was < $1 a gallon tho.
Also had '79 with a solid body, but straight six, one lug carb, bad starter, and a three speed manual. Fond memories of having half a dozen strippers help me pop start that turd so we could all meet up at Denny's after closing time.
null_infinity@reddit
My parents bought me a car. They drove it back from the Bahamas.

Had a 77 Camaro. It was my grandfathers and he died when I was 8. My grandmother kept the car until I turned 16 and gave it to me on my birthday. Loved that car…drove until the frame rusted out
damnedinspector@reddit
Red 1979 Z-28. Dropped in a mid-60’s 327 to replace the anemic smogged down 350. Quickly killed the Turbo-hydro 350. Four speed manuals were not allowed in Cali at that time, unfortunately. Dropped in a TH 400 and did a lot of street racing.
It was wrecked after a car jacking. So I replaced it with a Red 1985 Z-28 with a five speed manual. Then ditched that when I moved to a place with snow. Married a gal with a 68 Camaro a decade later. We still have it.
cricket_bacon@reddit

Do you really think they can go as fast as you
In your '87 Trans Am
They know you're in such a terrible rush
But they're going just as fast, as fast as they can
MehX73@reddit
I borrowed one once without permission. Does that count?
Lots of guys had them at my high school. Most were covered in bondo and primer, but there were a few really nice ones. The fun was seeing how many you could fit in it on a Saturday night. 8 was most I've ever squeezed in with.
No-Drawer9169@reddit
I had an ‘88, black with tan interior gold wheels and all decals deleted. Oh, and a manual transmission. Yeah, I guess I had rich parents. The car was great to drive, was way faster than 220 hp sounds today and sounded great.
It made strange noises over 80mph and it was like pulling teeth trying to get Chevy to take care of it. They changed out the clutch and it seemed to fix that. Then the damn thing went through 2 transmissions in 40k miles. Warranty covered it but I really didn’t feel like replacing a transmission every 20k.
I know, I don’t know how to drive a stick, right? But I learned on a stick, took my drivers license test on a stick and now own an 86 bmw that I’ve put 200k miles in and only had to replace the clutch once and the transmission zero times.
GM transmissions were shit back in the day.
damnedinspector@reddit
1985 z-28 with that same 5sp manual. It was a Borg Warner (now Tremec) T-5 that pre-dated the beefed up “world class” unit that arrived in the early 90’s. Too late for us.
But thinking about putting a WC T-5 in my 1960 Thunderbird. They’re good for 300hp now. It will be a definite improvement over the column shift 3sp with no first gear synchos!
No-Drawer9169@reddit
Oh, forgot. I kept the thing clean and waxed, and the paint was failing after 5 years.
Overall I’d rate the car as a first class POS.
Perseverance2571@reddit
I didn’t, but went 140 mph in an iroc on southbound I-15 in the wee hours back in the early 90’s.

I owned a Z-28 up until I woke up one morning and saw it was 1/3 of the way under salt water. I jumped out of bed and drove it out of town, to the local K-Mart where I bought some towels. Got all of the water out of it with a cup and finished getting most of the wetness from the carpets with the towels, drove to a car wash, washed and vacuumed, getting more of the moisture out . Then I went and traded it in for a new car. If they would have seen it three hours beforehand, they never would have accepted it as a trade in.

'68 Chevelle Malibu, 327 w/ 350 heads and glass packs. 4 on the floor manual.

My best friend had a 1987 IROC. Funny thing is even back then I thought it sucked. Wasn’t very fast, road like a lumber wagon, was a rattle trap and visibility was horrible. Now my other buddy had a 5.0 Mustang GT. A whole other world. So much better.

I once prosecuted a weed possession in a bitchin’ Camaro. A cop noticed a bag of weed pushed between the driver’s seat and the console while the car was parked. Must’ve been pretty big if he could see it through the side window, before legalization.

I alllllways wanted a Bitchin’ Camaro. Like, always. Still do. A neighbor down the road had one they were restoring. I literally cried the day he sold it.
My husband, (very very young Boomer, without the awful Boomer traits) doesn’t understand the Bitchin’ Camaro. This, despite being a mechanic in the 70s. He did feel bad we couldn’t buy the neighbor’s Bitchin’ Camaro. Those restored ones are expensive. He said if we had room he’d restore one for me. sigh Curse of the small yard and only one place to park.

I had in the early 2000s a 1980 v6 5 speed that was a base model. It was a hunk of crap it was fun for the first few months then it sucked in the rain it sucked in the snow it had that distinct GM interior smell. I ended up giving it too my dad and he used it for a grocery getter for about a year before it was stolen they drove up with a trailer and loaded up and took off the irony was the keys where literally under the seat.
ih8javert@reddit
I had an 88 IROC i had mixed feelings about it. New off the lot and the t tops leaked, it had a harsh ride - definitely not for long trips and unknown to me at the time, easy to steal.
I got it replaced with an ‘90 E30 M3 with the insurance and was so much happier. Similar power, more livable as a daily, and so much more fun to drive
disco_duck2004@reddit
Do you still have the E30 M3? That's still one of my holy grail vehicles

No. I stupidly traded it in for a grand Cherokee, to start a family. I’ve been kicking myself ever since. Every car I test drive now, is judged by that standard and nothing has come close.

I so want another but good ones are too much and I'm not in a place to restore one. I now have a Mercedes SLK350, similar but a V6 instead of an I6, still have a manual but I gained a gear, 6spd, and a retractable hardtop instead of T-tops. It's the same color, red, as my Z :)
Criseyde2112@reddit
Nice! My husband and I were talking this morning about manual transmission cars. He bought a jeep a few years ago and had to wait 6 months while they build a two-door manual one for him. Our 17 y.o. son has learned to drive it, which is great. There won't be too many American kids his age who know how to, just because they're rare now. My mother insisted that I learn to drive a manual because she wasn't going to have a daughter who was helpless unless it was an automatic. She didn't know she'd create a speed demon who loves downshifting and whipping around corners, lol.

After I left him, I got a black Camaro. That one got stolen from the hospital parking lot while I was at work (ER nurse).
After that, I bought a jeep because I needed 4wd to get around New England for work and also more cargo space for all my stuff since I moved around so much (I was a travel nurse that mostly covered 6-12 week maternity leaves, and I ended up working in every New England state over the years).

SandyBayou@reddit
That's a close match between the '86 IROC just being THE classic GenX Camaro, and the 2002 35th SS out of performance and uniqueness. However, my firstborn was conceived in the front seat of that '82 Berlinetta.
And although I have had two of them, ANY Camaro guy will tell you: "Any car can be an 'SS'. Only a Camaro can be a Z-28."

82 Z28 with manual transmission. Slower than a sloth but handled like a slot car. Of course it had 80s American build quality. After the 12 month, 12,000 mile warranty stuff started coming off (lower decals) and or breaking (clutch pivot arm bracket). Would love to see an unmolested one or a nicely restored one. Oh man, 69 Camaro Fastback in black was my dream car! I never did get one though, and now they're stupid expensive.
sarcasticorange@reddit
Fyi... there are 69 camaro hard-tops and 69 camaro convertibles. For that period, if you're talking about a fastback, it is most likely a Mustang.
Because the 69 hard top Camaros were a bit smoother on the rear than the 67-68 models, one could theoretically classify the hard-top as a semi-fastback, but you generally won't hear that term used with Camaros specifically due to it being associated with the Mustang (ie the enemy).

Mistervimes65@reddit
The story is very rural. I lived in west Georgia about an 30 minutes from the Alabama border. We all used to race on a two lane curvy road closer to Atlanta. The sheriff (who was legendary in Georgia) found out and posted up near the end of the road at about one o’clock in the morning.
I came around a corner and he was standing by the side of the road. He just pointed at me and then pointed at the shoulder of the road.
I pulled over. We chatted. He told me how fast I was going. Then he told me to go home and that he was going to call my dad.
He never called my dad. I finally told the story to my dad last Thanksgiving. I’m 60.
My old man said “You got that car up to 100 in the straightaway on that road?” and laughed.

My 1980 Camaro. Not a Z. It was A base model v6 which turns out to be valuable now since not many made it to the dealers. It disappeared just before I left for Basic Training. Turns out my Dad was only generous while I lived with them.

Mom had one, I would've been early teens. She sold it to my brother after a few years, was in the family for a while. She had stuck a fake flip switch, by the lighter I think, and labeled it Warp Drive. She'd flip it when friends asked what the switch was, or just because, wait for open road and floor it. Petal to the metal, backs against the seats. So many kids believed it was real, good times 🤣🤣
brinehart-cincy@reddit (OP)
I had a fake switch from Spencer gifts on my POS. It either said Forward Machine Guns, or Photon Torpedoes.

‘82 z28 was the first one. Dad had a midlife crisis and kept buying 3 more z28s for a family of 6. Great cars to look at and go cruising on a Friday night but mechanically shite cars. My friend’s older brother got an 82 Mustang GT new when we were still in high school. The older brother had graduated.
That car put a lot of cars at the time to shame, it took awhile for GM to catch up but eventually Camaro and Mustang traded the top spot back and forth for years after that.

Not a Camaro, but I had an ‘84 Trans Am for a while.

I had a 1980 Celica GT with major rust damage. Closest I ever got to owning a Camaro.

I had a few buddies with them but I never did. One of them had a really sweet 89 IROC. About 6 months after he bought it, the state police showed up at school looking for him. Turns out the car was stolen and had a forged title. Guy lost several thousand $$$ over it but never caught any charges.

Right after high school (1991) I had a red 1978 Camaro Z28. Only had it a few months and then it got stolen. Loved that car.

A guy i graduated with got one for a graduation present from his folks. Later that summer, he hit a telephone pole after going off the side of the road at about a hundred miles per hour. He had just dropped off his girlfriend because they had been fighting. She told people later that he had been driving the same way taking her home.
Witty-Atmosphere-211@reddit
No, but we had a 1981 Trans Am.
