I know 2 people who made a good choice by joining the military. One was kicked out of the house at 17 and was dumb as rocks but he's been in for 18 years and now has a house and family. The other one was delivering pizzas at 27 for 8 years and was a weed/porn addict who lived with his mom. He managed to get a decent job after he got out and has also turned his life around. For most people I wouldn't recommend it though.

I know three people who have dealt with the va for a long time with very bad results. One of them got no help until he acted aggressive towards his doctor then they finally did something. He was coached to do this by another vet who had to do the same thing.
