If this does end up being hybrid or EV that will piss a lot of people off.
mastawyrm@reddit
I think it would be weird if it's not at least a mild hybrid. Gtr has always been a tech forward answer to speed and fast despite being heavy. Asking for simplicity is anti gtr
RIP_Soulja_Slim@reddit
Being a hybrid is confirmed already.
https://www.thedrive.com/news/nissans-next-gt-r-will-be-a-hybrid-keep-the-vr38-block-and-arrive-by-2030
/
Seems like they intend to keep some core design components of the VR38, but probably new internals/heads/turbos/etc, then some sort of electrification.
Personally I think mild hybrid systems in turbo applications are amazing - you further eliminate lag, create torque where it's needed, have regenerative breaking, etc. You also alleviate significant fuel burn during the most inefficient operations for a car - basically that 0-10mph window. You can do wonders for city mileage/emissions with a mild hybrid without making the car feel like an EV at all.
The new mild hybrid systems coming in BMWS/MB cars with their respective I6s are getting a ton of praise.
rosd0@reddit
I bet it will be solid state hybrid as well. Nissan is planning to release SSB cars/hybrids by 2028. By 2030 when they release the GTR they will have perfected it.
AmazonPuncher@reddit
What a pile of shit this is going to be.
franksandbeans911@reddit
The Volvo T8 is light years beyond the T6 with a touch of hybrid magic. I'd expect them to be more of an indicator.
BrunoEye@reddit
I remember when the R35 came out and the reviews were describing it as this super complicated car full of computers, there was a twin test with the Monaro that was titled "Analog Vs Digital". Now it seems like such a basic car.
KyledKat@reddit
You can look at the current Prelude vitriol for the nearest analog of a car staying true to its roots being a mismatch for public expectations of what it should be.
narcistic_asshole@reddit
I think a Hybrid GT-R is pretty likely, it's where the segment is going and it's not like the R35 GTR prioritized raw driver engagement over flat out speed.
I think it comes down to how the electric motors are integrated and how "electric" they want it to be. If it's a mild hybrid or a porsche style hybrid system it shouldn't have a negative impact on the driving experience. It's when you add the batteries to make fuckloads of power and have EV only propulsion that the weight starts to add up
V8-Turbo-Hybrid@reddit
R35 never receive MT, but not so many people argued that.
Even-Promotion-4024@reddit
I'm pretty sure I saw somewhere that it would be hybrid, but still keep the VR38
radiantskie@reddit
I think that it will probably use the VQ hybrid drivetrain they already used in the previous generation
RoyShavRick@reddit
Makes total sense to me imo
Perth_R34@reddit
I wish it is a PHEV.
VR turbo with a hybrid motor would be amazing.
Like the Toyota Crowns Hybrid sedans.
Zudop@reddit
As long as the weight isn’t insane on it I don’t really have an issue with it being a hybrid. As others have commented I feel like the GTR has always been a high tech car when it releases, and love it or hate it hybrid tech is the future.
That being said, if it’s an EV people will rightfully be upset.
Boundish91@reddit
It probably will. Historically the skyline and especially the gtr version have always been about being high-tech so it would be strange not to adopt the latest tech.
Now personally I'd like them to make a new RB inline 6 and use that, but that's a pipedream.
Shadow_Ass@reddit
I love how the tiktok/instagram car kids are having a meltdown because they expected a new GTR, not knowing that there's a normal 4 door family sedan skyline
s4ltydog@reddit
My favorite is all the TikTok kids freaking out when people call their G35/37 an American Skyline because they don’t know that 1: there’s even a difference between a Skyline and a Skyline GTR and 2: that it’s actually… accurate. That’s how Nissan sends it to us, rebadged as an Infiniti. Now the intentions of G owners aside, it’s actually spot on accurate.
RIP_Soulja_Slim@reddit
It's funny cuz up until the R35 GTR the GTR was a performance trim of an economy car. Basically comparable to an STI, so it's like if Subaru imported the Impreza as something else and you were bragging about that lol.
That said, G/Q cars are very solid cars for their price point, but the depreciation and accessibility means there's a pile of owners out there with very very bad taste lol.
rosd0@reddit
G35 and G37 were/are great cars though. Amazing engine and good transmission. Solid 350Z platform as well.
Kay1000RR@reddit
The Skyline was never an economy car. It was always a premium sports sedan/coupe.
luke10050@reddit
R31 4 door enters the chat.
Kay1000RR@reddit
Bro...😂😂😂
Youkai280@reddit
I dunno… a CA18 powered R32 GXi, pushing out a whopping 90whp, doesn’t really scream “premium sports sedan/coupe” lol
aprtur@reddit
To play devils advocate, from R31 backward, there were the extremely economy focused diesel Skylines...not really anything sporty about them, just reasonably nice and efficient sedans/5-doors/wagons.
peanutbuttahcups@reddit
Exactly, it's not unlike a base 4cyl Mustang vs a GT500 or Dark Horse.
Unrelated, but all this talk reminded me of this Mustang GT-R video from back in the day.
SummonerSausage@reddit
I knew what that video was going to be before I clicked it, and I still watched it through an laughed.
peanutbuttahcups@reddit
Good to revisit the classics from time to time 😆
s4ltydog@reddit
Man I was hoping that was gonna be a video of someone pulling a Tokyo Drift and dropping an RB under the hood of a Mustang……that was definitely something else…..
FoMoCoNutjob@reddit (OP)
Bullshit. In its home market, the non-GT-R Skyline was always positioned as a mid-range sports sedan competing with the A4, 3 Series, etc., and was priced only slightly below them. Not comparable with the STI st all. And by your logic, the M3 is also just a trim level of an economy car.
RIP_Soulja_Slim@reddit
The base model skyline has a 200hp four cylinder. I guess you could describe that as a sports sedan if you wanted to, in the way that a 330i is technically a sports sedan, but it's basically a commuter car. Nothing wrong with that, but certainly not some high performance vehicle.
Yes, that's correct. An M3 is a high performance trim level of the 3 series, which is a mass market four door. In their home market 3 series still come with cloth seats and a four banger that barely makes 200hp.
I'm not sure what distinction you were looking to make there. The R35 is a dedicated GTR platform, where as previous GTRs were trim levels of the skyline sedan, in the same way M cars are trim levels of the 3 series. I'm not sure why that's controversial?
optimistic_agnostic@reddit
I totally disagreed with you then realised you're talking about the G chassis not the R chassis. It's honestly just buying into Nissan's marketing department bs to call a G a skyline, they're a totally different car sharing only the same lettering as R chassis models which absolutely were in the premium bracket (above s and z chassis).
thevictor390@reddit
The issue is you said economy car, initially. Skyline is a big sedan in Japan, economy cars are tiny hatchbacks and keis.
RIP_Soulja_Slim@reddit
I mean, if we want to debate the difference between an economy car and sports sedan based on regionality that's perfectly fine, it's up to interpretation with significant grey area. Like, one could call an accord an economy car, but would the existence of the Fit mean it's not?
I'm not particularly married to any of those terms - the point is that GTR used to be a trim level of the regular ass sedan called skyline, and now it's a separate model, but base/mid trim skylines are still just sorta regular sedans. Nothing wrong with em, but they're not some super unique thing.
IDK, maybe that dude owns an Infiniti and got upset at the suggestion that it wasn't some unique JDM masterpiece.
thevictor390@reddit
No, I don't think you will find many that would call the Accord an economy car. Certainly I can't find an American reviewer doing so. So I think the term is working against you.
Hey_man_Im_FRIENDLY@reddit
Yeah an accord is not an economy car lmao, I’ll have what he is smoking
superknight333@reddit
it depend on the country really, an accord in my country would classify as "luxury car" yes because of import tax and what not as it cost 70k USD for new one.
RIP_Soulja_Slim@reddit
I mean, I guess that depends on how strictly you're wanting to apply the term economy car, I certainly have no intention of litigating those specifics on reddit. IMO economy cars need not be the most compact model in a lineup, there's room for multiple, but either way it's not a strict definition so variability in interpretation is to be expected.
crunchynibbas@reddit
Nah you're right. An Accord is an economy car. They're conflating "economy" with size. They may be more luxurious than before but they're still made to be relatively cheap.
brisketenthusiast@reddit
For what it is worth, I differentiate it between economy and luxury, and will use compact, midsize, and full size.
thevictor390@reddit
Yeah your variance has just strayed too far from the norm. Because basically no one will agree with you. So you can consider it that if you want but every time you say it people will be confused or push back.
RIP_Soulja_Slim@reddit
I don't think nobody, I think plenty would, but again I'm not particularly interested in litigating that on reddit ya know?
thevictor390@reddit
Nah, you're fooling yourself, you're like 6 messages deep into a thread about the market classification of a Skyline sedan.
RIP_Soulja_Slim@reddit
Everyone wants to make everything in to an argument on this site lol.
Have a good one homie.
CTJacob@reddit
In the R32, it was 90hp. The 2.0L RB20E I6 made 123hp.
RIP_Soulja_Slim@reddit
Was talking about the current iteration.
MachineTeaching@reddit
The base model R34 came with an engine with about 150 hp, which is the same as a base model 3 series nowadays.
FujitsuIndust@reddit
Found the instagram/tiktok car kid
NagakwaKaoru@reddit
The a4 and 3 series are normal mid range sedans, m3 is also a trim/modification of a normal 3 series so I have no idea what you are on about.
Lazer_Destroyer@reddit
Well they're not economy cars. A VW Golf or Passat could be considered economy at that time
FoMoCoNutjob@reddit (OP)
The dumb fuck I was replying to claimed that the Impreza STI is comparable to the non-GT-R Skyline, which isn’t even remotely accurate.
zerosystem03@reddit
someone forgot their meds today
Antique-Season2255@reddit
Jesus calm your tits my brother
Rihsatra@reddit
Who would do such a silly thing?
Vhozite@reddit
There is a person here who has a black G37(?) coupe with the Nissan and Skyline badging/nameplates and I think it looks really nice. So much better than the alpha-numeric garbage luxury brands are obsessed with.
Shoopin@reddit
to be fair, it's Nissan. they've always been obsessed with alpha numeric while their car names have always been better (imo). we could've had a Fairlady instead of 240z
velociraptorfarmer@reddit
Examples:
A 2001-2006 Nissan Skyline (equivalent to the G35)
(equivalent to the Q50)
A 2007-2014 Nissan Skyline (equivalent to the G37)
A [2015-Present Nissan Skyline](
Shallow_wanderer@reddit
The thing that I've always kind of noticed when I look at the modern Skylines is that they almost look like an Infiniti G that was rebadged into a Skyline
Like I know it's the other way around but idk, the Infiniti grills/badges seem to just match these cars a lot better than the Nissan grills/badges
Hoooooooar@reddit
I hope that infinity can come back and make a modern performance/red sport/whatever Qxx. The more players in the game the better.
But its gotta be good, it can't be a $65,000 z. I duno who would spend that much on it which is why i've only seen 1 on the road, and i drive every day down a major highway.
Shallow_wanderer@reddit
400Z pricing is absolutely bonkers still to this day, like I hear everyone saying "oh they're coming down to $40k now" yet the Nissan dealers near me all have market adjustments to $70k with like 2 on the lot
I genuinely think that after the NSX and Zupra flopped hard, I'm not holding out much hope for halo/enthusiast cars in 2026 unless it's a GT86 or Miata...
Hoooooooar@reddit
yea its true it wont really help on the balance sheet but it could begin to repair their horrendous image.
I agree with you though these dealers sitting on Z's thinking they are some kinda fucking hot in demand no supply car. They are living in fantasy land.
JEs4@reddit
Wait why don’t they like it, because it Skylines are Nissans? I’m actually surprised it isn’t the other way around but I guess I’ve never seen a badged swapped G/Q car.
Rihsatra@reddit
I did mine, but like way above and beyond; The only things left in my car that say Infiniti are the floor mats and the dumb logo stitched in the seat. It is funny in Japan some people go for the Infiniti badging.
1 2
And just for fun I asked Gemini to draw a picture I took in Initial D style but specifically with the paint color since it's hard to capture in phone pictures.

havok0159@reddit
You see the same thing with VW. Europeans importing US spec bumpers for the side lights and the small number plate while americans do the opposite (albeit for a lot more parts).
ALOIsFasterThanYou@reddit
People will always want what is available on the other side of the pond. It's like how in Japan, having a LHD car is a status symbol, despite objectively being worse for RHD traffic.
It's also why I think Honda bringing the Acura Integra Type-S to Japan is a great move - they're bound to do well with people who want a more exotic CTR.
JEs4@reddit
That looks great. I’d do the same if I owned one. The heritage is more fun.
PomegranateNo454@reddit
I'm super glad I came across this post and your comment.
Coincidentally, I'm 50/50 on buying a 2011 G37 Coupe Journey (automatic) with 97,000 miles on it. It's in excellent condition. How is yours treating you? I made a post yesterday asking about the gallery gasket and it's probability of happening. Do you have familiarity with that by chance? Thank you in advance.
Rihsatra@reddit
I'm aware of that being a problem but haven't experienced it on mine. I had to replace the CSC which is a common problem with the 6 speed and the PO burned up the clutch so that was all pulled out at like 45k miles. My mechanic didn't mention any leakage on the back side there.
Other than that the only other problem I had with it was recently a misfire starting. I went through and replaced the plugs and coil packs but I think the problem ultimately was exposed wiring on the harness of the one coil. Either that or putting it back together for the 5th or 6th time did the trick.
JediKnightaa@reddit
its even an SUV
V8-Turbo-Hybrid@reddit
I know you thinking about Juke-R, it was exactly crossover GT-R R35, but these people were fine that it with different nameplate.
ZaheerAlGhul@reddit
I think OP is talking about the Skyline Crossover. We got it as the infiniti EX35
TomcatZ06@reddit
To be fair, this is how r/cars reacted to the new Integra, forgetting that the original Integra also started as a slightly nicer Civic and the Type-R was a later, very special version.
MrReadilyUnready@reddit
And that the regular Integra was always quite slow and uninspiring to drive.
clioris_luteca@reddit
They probably didn't know (or don't want to know) 4-door GT-R (PGC10) came a year before 2-door GT-R (KPGC10).
V8-Turbo-Hybrid@reddit
They also forget R33 sedan existence. Nissan did put in production again in R33 gen.
franksandbeans911@reddit
Always secretly wish the Stagea got the GT-R treatment. AMG did it, why not? Also I seem to remember a One-Make race on one of the Gran Turismos that was all wagons.
DarkMatterM4@reddit
That more or less exists with the Stagea 260RS.
franksandbeans911@reddit
It's a rough equivalent but nowhere near the Juke-R madness.
clioris_luteca@reddit
What do you want, a VH Stagea?
franksandbeans911@reddit
I'm thinking the converted ones that swapped the GTR front clip for their own.
Emotional_Signal7883@reddit
They never bought a Skyline in Gran Turismo 2 not realizing it wasn't a GT-R.
petey_porker@reddit
! This is a good start. I hope the next gen GTR isn't hybrid/EV.
Teledildonic@reddit
Why not? The last GTR was very computer-driven and not at all an analog experience. Hybrid wouldn't change those dynamics.
petey_porker@reddit
Weight
Teledildonic@reddit
The R35 was a fucking porker for its time.
petey_porker@reddit
For real.
Teledildonic@reddit
So yeah, I wouldn't worry too much. The GT-R has always been a heavy brute, packed with tech and deceptively easy to drive. I would be shocked if Nissan really strays from that.
I feel like it could end up being another NSX situation: people complained about it being too computery and a hybrid because the old one was analog, forgetting that the philosophy of the car was "be the affordable supercar, use the latest tech". In the 90s that tech was all analog still. By the 2010s, supercars were dabbling in hybrid power, so of course the NSX followed suit.
Perth_R34@reddit
I hope it is a hybrid!
Ziakel@reddit
Would love Skyline badging here in US. It’ll be likely a new Infinity Q50
radiantskie@reddit
I think that Skyline would be a way better name than Q50. Infiniti's current naming convention is very forgettable, especially if you are not into them. Skyline is a much more memorable name, and people associate it with the GTR.
T-Baaller@reddit
And kids that grew up with Gran Turismo 2-5 are in money making years now, if they made the skyline that look enough like the GTR it would have done more numbers than the GQslop names they've been using.
franksandbeans911@reddit
Yeah and the US market missed out on a proper Sylvia also, getting a crap truck engine instead of the super cool turbo of the Sylvia.
thetimechaser@reddit
Even the truck engines are desirable now. It took quite a awhile but they formula has been cracked for safe gnarly power cheaper than an SR20 engine set (which now costs as much as two rolling shells lmao)
franksandbeans911@reddit
2.4 vs 2 liters, I imagine that truck engine had some potential if properly massaged. Quit following that scene a while ago, good to hear that they finally nailed it. That should bring a lot of 240sx's back to life.
ZaheerAlGhul@reddit
What was the reason for having a different engine for the states?
franksandbeans911@reddit
I forget. Something about California emissions, or warranty claims, or some nonsense. Maybe the US didn't trust turbos back then but definitely does now. Google says emissions and torque, which truck engines are known for in NA versions...torque and low gearing.
NBWK26@reddit
IF IT AINT MANUAL THEY CAN KEEP IT
FeemBleem@reddit
They confirmed a manual.
HaggardSummaries@reddit
*on the four door rear wheel drive Skyline. GT-R will almost certainly be automatic as it has been for 18 years now
ZaheerAlGhul@reddit
Infiniti version is going to be a manual so this will probably be as well
FoMoCoNutjob@reddit (OP)
I find it remarkable how much the side profile in the three-quarter angle shot reminds me of the four-door PGC10 GT-R.
peanutbuttahcups@reddit
The cursive and taillights 👌
WordWithinTheWord@reddit
I wonder if they could make the image any darker I could almost see something in it
Several-Eggplant4460@reddit
This is how I imagine the conversion went during the photoshoot:
"How's the lighting?"
"Not good, there still is some!"
DodgerBlueRobert1@reddit
I immediately thought of the four-door PGC10 as well. I'm very curious how close to that gen the new one's going to look.
ThePandaDaily@reddit
Please don’t be electric 🙏🏼
costafilh0@reddit
I hope to be surprised by ICE. I expect to be disappointed by hybrid.
velociraptorfarmer@reddit
The hybrid already exists. It's the VQ35HR that makes 305hp naturally aspirated with a 7600rpm redline mated to a mild hybrid system that pushes it to 362hp combined while getting 27 city/31 hwy.
All that in a 3900lb package, which isn't terrible for a 4 door sedan, and identical to a BMW M340i.
radiantskie@reddit
Hybrid is ICE
Perth_R34@reddit
The current V37 Skyline is already available with a VQ 3.5L V6 hybrid making 270kW of power
Beni_Stingray@reddit
Yay, another 2+ ton "sportscar"
velociraptorfarmer@reddit
The Q50 that this will be based on was under 2 tons in every configuration, including a hybrid variant.
WarCrimeGaming@reddit
Interesting.
GymLeaderMatt@reddit
Extremely. Where is Nissan getting this influx of capital to play with? The maxima was cancelled, the frontier and the Z and the gtr are all on decade-old platforms. Surely it’s not from Ariya and Kicks sales…
ZaheerAlGhul@reddit
They're working with what they have already developed. This car is most likely going to be a heavy redesign of the platform the Q60 sat on.
velociraptorfarmer@reddit
I'd bet my left nut it's on the good 'ol FM platform and like the G, will share a ton of components with the Z since the who are identical other than bodywork and the wheelbase being 12" longer.
LanEvo7685@reddit
So they are doing the same thing as they did with the G35 / R35?
This_Elk_1460@reddit
Please no Infinity is a dying car brand
korko@reddit
So is Nissan.
Shallow_wanderer@reddit
They could turn Infiniti around right now if they truly wanted to, but Nissan's insistence on giving the brand nothing but FWD CVT crossovers is what's killing it
thetimechaser@reddit
Someone wake me when they revive the IDX project or tease a Silvia / 240sx / 200sx
FeemBleem@reddit
Ivan Espinosa did say he wants a Silvia.
thetimechaser@reddit
I would love nothing more than for Ivan himself to break into my home and hit me with a stun gun at 4am to announce the new S car
DM725@reddit
I want a 4 door 6-speed manual Skyline with the Z motor that will let me put 3 kids in the backseat.
Bright_Advance7149@reddit
Your wishes will probably come true then. There have been rumors the next gen skyline will have a manual. The VR30 is most likely what’s going into this, Nissan doesn’t really have any other performance engines at the moment and I don’t see them having the capital to R&D a new one.
DM725@reddit
The real question is will they build it with a manual and bring it to the U.S.?
I want a poor man's Japanese CT5 Blackwing!
Bright_Advance7149@reddit
I think there were rumors that Nissan will be bringing it to the US as an Infiniti, as a successor to the Q50. I don’t see why they wouldn’t option the manual along with it. For the last generation V37 Skyline, we got a coupe trim that Japan never had.
Zephyruos@reddit
4-Door GTR?
Like those 90s Skyline Sedans?
Yes please (and no, don't want is as an Infiniti neither that JDM Nissan with Infiniti body model).
ZaheerAlGhul@reddit
Im really excited for this. With every passing year there’s been announcements of manufacturers getting rid of their sedans. The more sedans the better.
Mytre-@reddit
All talking about the GT-R. But here I am wondering if they bring the skyline sedan and also provide it hybrid too. Not going to lie sounds interesting as a fan of sedans /wagons would like a nice commuter/trip car
AdMission3583@reddit
Would be interesting if it came to the North American market as a Maxima. I know that would never happen because the Infiniti variant is coming, but it would live up to the "4DSC" name.
I'm probably crazy but the taillight shape reminds me of the '98 Maxima.
radiantskie@reddit
I like the direction Nissan is going with their designs. Judging by the fact that they used the third gen for inspiration, I am predicting that the tail lights will look extremely similar to that of a R31 Skyline with a black bar connecting between the tail light. I hope that they make the license plate lower than that section so the flow isn't disrupted like on the R31.
Mishka_1994@reddit
Interesting how they kept the sporty GT-R for Nissan but the regular sedan as an Infiniti for the NA market. Though I kind of wish we got Nissan Skylines here instead, but I get why they split it up for the NA market.
AUFalconForteS1@reddit
I thought the skyline never went away
TunerJoe@reddit
The V37 Skyline is still available to purchase according to Nissan's Japanese website
AUFalconForteS1@reddit
Yeah that's why I'm confused on the skyline returning, it is prob for north America I guess
This_Elk_1460@reddit
Are they going to bring the skyline to America or is it just going to be a Japanese. And with the Altima gone there's room for it.
sidewinderaw11@reddit
I love that they reused the old 'S' and 'Skyline' logo
GREAT_SALAD@reddit
They've been in the habit of that recently, the Z uses the old logo.
bacon205@reddit
Im just waiting for it to be like the Prelude.
New skyline, yay! Oooh, its a sub 200 horse altima drivetrain.. womp womp
Perth_R34@reddit
The current V37 Skyline is already available with a VQ 3.5L V6 hybrid making 270kW

The US will get the Skyline sedan in the form of an Infiniti.
RIP_Soulja_Slim@reddit
This is a thing I'm not sure everyone is aware of - the GTR was a trim of Skyline up until the R34. Starting with the V35 the GTR became it's own car, and the skyline was brought to the US as an infiniti - first hte G35, then the Q50, etc.
