Huh? If anything aren't there more people who insist that the older games are better because of the older graphics and charm that they had?
Source: Me, I'm one of them.
ElcorAndy@reddit
There are also plenty of people who prefer the classic movies and hate the remakes and people who have only seen the remakes and not bother with the originals.

lewd-boy-o@reddit
I'm on r/greentext of course I'd want to moan for people
StandardN02b@reddit
Also, there are plenty of people screaming at Holywood to stop making these awfull remakes for blind greed.
Source: Me.
Happy_Ocelot_4945@reddit
It would be cool if they went all in on the remakes like the 1996 romeo and juliet.
theyeshman@reddit
That movie is fucking peak. The very-old professor who taught my Shakespearian Tragedys class in uni made us watch it as assigned reading, I was expecting to hate it after seeing the cast and box art, but it's entertaining, true to the text, yet modernized in (mostly) good ways. I will NOT hear any slander for makeup and wardrobe on that production either, Hawaiian shirts are pinnacle of gang fashion.
Deminos2705@reddit
Some things I can see the appeal of remaking if they stay true to the original - limitations of tech and vision at the time. Re remakes are pretty damn good for example. Stayed mostly true to source and provided a much improved experience.
Boricinha@reddit
I think remakes are always tricky, because there isn't much to just do it again but better graphics, i like how different it usually end up and how it fare to the original (as long as it keep the essence of the original project), RE4 Remake is a great example of it.
Looking forward to the GOW original trilogy remake, Santa Monica usually cooks.
flyboyy513@reddit
I reference you to the system shock remake.
Boricinha@reddit
I've never played the originals, heard it was the series that ended up inspiring Bioshock (like my favorite game of all time), do you think the originals are worthwhile to visit before or should i stick with the remake and only play them if i really like it?
(Like Resident Evil, i started at RE4 OG and eventually got to play the original 3 because of how much i liked it)
flyboyy513@reddit
I'll be honest I've never played any, but from what I've heard first hand it seems like they updated the art style, removed mechanics people didn't like, and expanded some stuff QOL wise. They essentially did a full repass of the game in new engine. Kept the style while updating the graphics and engine performance.
Deminos2705@reddit
Yeah I’m looking forward to it as well, simply because the controls are outdated and gameplay changes through the years have made it stale in my opinion.
Boricinha@reddit
I think they still play well but they are very 2000s edgy coded in some moments, i think the way they are handling storytelling nowadays can be really interesting to see.
Phazon2000@reddit
It’s because of nostalgia lol.
yeezusKeroro@reddit
The oldheads may be more vocal online, but I really think they're in the minority considering how well remakes sell. I doubt younger gamers are going out of their way to play a game they didn't grow up with rather than just buying the modern day version with better features.
huskinater@reddit
Remakes/remasters should be about people being excited something they liked a long time ago can be experienced by new people today.
And a good remake is something that understands what made the original good and carries that across time while also recognizing how some things have changed/improved and mixes them together into something new. Bonus points if it has a distinct creative at the helm doing something special. The Dune movies are a fantastic example for a film right now that is a great remake.
The issues people have are when the motivations for the remake are clearly just corporate greed. Like we didn't need a remaster of The Last of Us 2, it was just 4yrs old at the time.
There are plenty of good examples of remakes. RE2 was a rather well received one. Deadspace. Someone else mentioned the recent System Shock. These are games that were decades old (well Deadspace is just 18) on old hardware that really benefit from the graphical and gameplay improvements and still maintain the spirit of the original.
And this is coming from someone feeling really old talking about this.
ChoiceFudge3662@reddit
Older games are better because the lack of modern technology forced them to innovate in ways that didn’t involve using AI to upscale their game.
Older games would also suck a lot because of the limitations and because not everyone knew how to work around them, and because making rip-off games was a legit tactic back then.
Diligent-Kiwi-8328@reddit
thats because you are in communities dedicated to the game. normies eat remakes up without questioning.

Lazarous86@reddit
They also had to be more polished when the only distribution was physical media. It had to be tested and bullet proof on initial release or the game would bomb. Now they just patch the bugs.
AmbulantCholesterol@reddit
The are situations where the remakes are better because they have access to better technology and know more about quality of life and control.
The n64 Zelda for the 3ds are apatite to the original for the aim control alone.
And yes I played both
Also, there are old games that just won't run on new pcs, even using dosbox, I'm so hoping for a remake of genewars

MrBingly@reddit
I've tried getting a few people into Star Wars. Despite what the fans say about quality I could get them to watch the prequels, but I'd lose them on the original trilogy. Polish is important.
Boricinha@reddit
Is this "video-game community" in the room with us right now?
Don't get me wrong i love the original RE4 and like the remake even more but i would never consider one obsolete compared to the other, both have their charm.
MegatonDoge@reddit
Capcom itself kinda considers the old one obsolete, anon isn't completely wrong.
If you look up Resident Evil 4, the game that pops up in all stores is Resident Evil 4 Remake, while the original title is called Resident Evil 4 (2005). They feel that the original game should have the year attached to the title.
Boricinha@reddit
I think that's way more aligned with marketing/distribution than any of the game's actual developers, again, can't say whats on their minds since i'm not one of them but that specific argument is pretty weak.
MegatonDoge@reddit
So you agree that the marketing wants the original to be on the sub-product rather than the main game which inspired the remake.
I just made that specific argument to show their intention and the argument supports it.
Boricinha@reddit
Marketing will want to sell whatever makes the most money for the company.
One costs $39.99 (now it's $15.99 on sale) and the other is a 20+ year game that sells by $19.99 (now it's $4.99 on sale).
Now consider 2 things, which one will most likely hit the mainstream (selling more copies) and which one is more attractive to general audiences, a new shiny thing or a game cube title that thankfully got ported 10+ times (note, you have to sell this one 2 to 3 more times to make even with the remake).
Do not let your love for a product cloud you judgment when it comes to capitalism, as much as we love Capcom they are just like any other AAA studio, they exist first to make profit and second to make art, sometimes they are lucky enough to do both (RE9) other times not so much (RE: Verse).
MegatonDoge@reddit
So you do agree that the marketing department considers the original game to be the sub-product. Isn't that the same thing that I said.
Don't your arguments support the fact that the original game is somewhat obsolete to Capcom, because they can just sell the shiny remake for $20 more.
Boricinha@reddit
You are being way to generalist here mate, a company is composed of so many moving parts, you have the top dog CEOs that usually don't care about shit other than profits (and call the shots), you have marketers and designers that most likely never even played any of the games, some times are not even part of the company itself (third party contractors) and then you have actual developers, artists, actors, directors, sound designers and what not.
Now think that for the latter part (the ones that actually made the game) to have a job in the first place (so that they can keep making art) they depend on a lot of different segments that couldn't give a bigger crap about what they are selling (as long as it is in fact selling).
So yeah, execs and marketers will just care about selling the shiny and expensive toy while the artists will respect deeply the source material, trying to honor it on the best of their capacity (side note, this project isn't any cookie cutter money printer remake, RE4 was revolutionary to the gaming industry, the weight on their shoulders was insurmountable). And you can feel in the game how much they liked the original, all the care in constructing and maintaining the environments, the character models, the gameplay mechanics, the soundtrack.
So yeah, if the condition for the people that matter to make art is to have a "(2005)" in the title of the original to make clear for general audiences it's not the remake, i'll take that offer any day (i fucking love Resident Evil, as long as there are good games coming up, i'm happy, they do not erase the original).
MegatonDoge@reddit
Does it matter? They had little reason to call the original 2005, while removing the Remake title for the 2023 game. The company did that just because they view this as a product and not as art.
I'm not sure what you get by defending Capcom on this? Your arguments back up the fact that the original is the secondary product.
In the end, you change the goalposts just to say that as long as you are happy, you don't care. You just want to downplay anon's argument, just because it doesn't concern you.

the remakes are fun asf, hell yeah I'll help fund those. I just got re3 remake for like $4, shit was nice. idk what their anti game preservation shit is tho. they just released all 3 of the original trilogy on steam, and they still have the original re4 on steam. og re4 got a native vr port like 5 years ago too
Boricinha@reddit
No dude, you can't like the new thing, you have to bash it and pretend the original simply does not exists.
It's not like it's possible to like both and be happy that Capcom has been delivering quality products and keeping the IP alive.

Been slowly chipping away at the RE series for the past couple years. Started with re4re. Took a while but just now getting into OG re4. Plan to do 2 and 3 next.
Remakes are good for getting newbies into the series. Kinda get the sentiment. Older brother was old enough to play re4 when it first released but still questioned why I'd play the og when the remake is there.
richtofin819@reddit
Time investment required is also a huge factor.
Watching two movies is going to set you back 6 hours at most unless you're watching it extraordinarily long film.

Sushi-DM@reddit
Almost universally remakes miss the point that all beloved games need are a new coat of paint and quality of life changes. I can't convey how shit it was that they remade ff7 so beautifully but they decided to just... completely adhd it out into a button masher.
Powwer_Orb13@reddit
Square makes mostly ARPGs these days, so it tracks that when remaking FF7, they'd follow that trend. They also weren't remaking it to be the same game as the original, or a graphical remaster. Why bother remaking it if it's just going to play the same as the original?
They're treating the remake as if it's a new game that just so happens to have the same name, plot, and characters as an older game. Which is artistically the best way to do a remake imho. It's not just remaking the game, it re-Making the game, from the ground up, as a modern title.
Sushi-DM@reddit
"Why bother remaking it if it plays the same?" Because it was an all time great game and all it really needed was graphical updates and QOL on the rough edges only present because it was developed in the wild west of 3d gaming...?
Powwer_Orb13@reddit
So you want a remaster instead of a remake? Remakes are meant to be different from the original, not just a rerelease with a new coat of paint. It's meant to question every single part of them original and ask why a given design decision was made, and if it serves the game and story still. Square made the og FF7 a JRPG because that's what they made back then. They questioned if that's the best route to tell the story and had the most compelling gameplay. Shocker, real time action rpg combat feels more immersive and impactful.
Sushi-DM@reddit
It does not feel even remotely as immersive. It is jingling keys and button mashing.
Tallzed@reddit
The only remakes I see this with are the RE remakes, haven't seen it with any other
KhadgarIsaDreadlord@reddit
Tbh the gameplay and the graphics are the only thing that makes RE4make worth playing. I don't think it invokes the vibe of the original, it watered Leon down a lot, took all the personality out of Saddler and Salazar.
In the original Saddler always came off as someone who doesn't actually believe what he is preaching, religion is just the means to control the Los Iluminados. Like a power player in the global bioweapon struggle. Then they made him a general cult leader.
Nate_Ginnerson@reddit
I wish to destroy Crowbcat for how he ruined video game quality discourse.
vverbov_22@reddit
Remasters are sometimes just graphics updates with bug fixes. Obviously shit won't change a lot. Movies are fully changed, so yeah, what do you expect?
KudereDev@reddit
Main reason is most games before 2010 is so hard to even boot on modern PC. Oh yeah you should totally play game from 2004 that needs literal blood ritual just to turn on and 10 baby sacrifices so you can play to the game credits. No one wants to do that outside of some hardcore fans, because corpo made new remake and remaster slop just for them.
Films are easier, they won't be in 4k but at least you can totally watch them no matter from 2000 or from 2020.
ronshasta@reddit
Lmao they all run great on consoles
showFeetPlzuwu@reddit
Yeah use the intended hardware.
Powwer_Orb13@reddit
Intended hardware that isn't produced or sold at retail anymore. That goes for PC exclusives doubly.
I have legitimate, physical discs of lots of older PC games from my childhood and my fathers old collection, they do not work on modern PC architecture. Those that do aren't happy about it and are filled with glitches.
Jaximumpower@reddit
“Blood ritual” 1: Download fan patch from pc gaming wiki or steam discussion boards 2: copy paste into directory 3: play
Works 80-90% of the time
TheBlessedBoy99@reddit
The funniest part is that once you get old enough and the movies become shot on physical film, they are often in 4k, or 8k, or however detailed you want. No need for any sort of up-scaling.
SorcererWithGuns@reddit
Keep in mind, digital cinematography didn't really take off until the mid-2000s or something so "old enough" means the majority of all movies, aside from low-budget/indie films that were shot on 8 mm or just straight up videotape
KnightOfArsford@reddit
First thing came to mind was VtM: Bloodlines. It's hard to get it to run without installing the necessary patches, and even then it's still buggy/unfinished. I wish there was a true remake of it with modern graphics and with the cut content.

not saying that no one perfers the remake over the original (i personally like the remake way more) but treating people as a single entity who just consume the newest stuff is ridiculous
also comparing old movies to old video games is incredibly flawed logic, since games are generally way more limited by technology of its time vs movies, not to mention that games are like 20 hours long, making it more demanding for the average person to play what is essentially the same game twice.
cherry313@reddit

For the most part movies haven’t had great advances in technology that makes watching old movies obsolete, Citizen Kane watches just as well on modern screens as whatever the latest blockbuster may be. The only movies that are old and obsolete are silent movies, which do get remakes and people are fine with them
drak0ni@reddit
I don’t believe you should only play one version of a game, but games take 10s of hours and movies take 1-3.
gary-cuckoldman@reddit

Dead Space, Mass Effect and Shadow of the colossus come to mind. The originals are rough
dance_rattle_shake@reddit
FF7 remake shits all over the soul of the original. Best to pretend those games have nothing to do with each other
MegatonDoge@reddit
Nah, the FF7 remakes are the worst examples you could give for games which don't have soul. The sheer amount of effort they put into those mini games is the proof of its soul. They could have done something simple, but they went ahead and put in a functional piano of all things.
anti-gerbil@reddit

Ooo I have to disagree. Mass effect 1 has not aged well, at least for me. The LE helped it out alot.
TheDwiin@reddit
I completely agree with this, but on BioWare's behalf I do have to say that they threw a lot of things at the chalkboard at found what stuck. Which is why I love the legendary edition because they removed a bunch of the crap that made the first Mass Effect game rough.
That being said, I would like to point out that in this meme they're using Resident Evil as an example... But technically they are not full remakes but more of parallel universe reboots... Because they slightly changed the story in the new ones.
gary-cuckoldman@reddit
I agree, all it really needed was graphics touch up

treewizard13@reddit

breakfasteveryday@reddit

brnt927@reddit
Newer remakes often have improved controls making them more accessible and sometimes less frustrating to play. So the remake can be a superior experience.

There are dozens of examples of the original game being seen by fans as better than the remake, and there is a good number of movies where the remake is arguably better than the original.
Remember GTA: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition? Warcraft III Reforged? Super Mario 64 DS was liked by a lot of people, but those same people would tell you it isn't a substitute for SM64. We also have examples like the Demon's Souls remake where the people who played the original felt the art direction was completely changed by BluePoint and they REALLY don't like it (it's me, I'm one of those people).
When people talk about The Thing, they refer to John Carpenter's 1982 film, not the 1951 The Thing from Another World. Did you know there was a 1932 Scarface film? Also, the 1984 Dune is unanimously seen as hot garbage, with then new films being critically praised. Whenever anyone mentions The Fly, do they tell you that you need to watch the 1958 Neumann film, or are they talking about the 1986 Cronenberg film?
At most, you might see some super fans tell you to try every version, but the same can be said for a lot of video games. The difference is that it's a much smaller time and financial commitment to watch every version of one film than it is to play every version of one video game.

I have seen my gf trying to navigate this game as a real casual gamer, and she definitely needed the yellow paint to teach her what we more seasoned gamers know, such as what is destroyable and what you can or cannot interact with
Karpsten@reddit
I mean, it heavily depends, and often it is best to play both, but there are still some big differences between video game and movie remakes.
On the one hand, the cultural-temporal difference between video game and movie remakes can often be quite different, specifically with the former usually being way shorter. Games have only been around for 50~ish years, and they have only really been a serious narrative medium for around 30 of those. So most games that get a remake are somewhere in the range of 10-30 years old, whereas movies that get remade can be significantly older. Sure, the cultural context of the 00s and 90s is still different than that of today, but it's still much closer than the 50s, 60s or in many regards even 80s; both because of temporal distance but also due to the big cultural shifts of the end of the cold war and the spread of first consumer computers and subsequently the internet (as well as due to big social shifts in the perception of minorities in that time period, with western society rapidly becoming more liberal between the 70s and the 00s).
More importantly, on the other hand, game remakes can also be much closer to being a 1:1 recreation of the game with only updated graphics and QoL features (that is, of course, not always the case). So they can sometimes be more akin to what would be a remake in the context of a movie, or maybe a directors cut if there are changes [in the game] but they are kept to a minimum. And in those cases, it can often be sufficient to play the remake in order to get a full sufficient understanding of it as a work of art. Sure, playing the original can still grant you some additional (mostly contextual) insight, but it's not necessarily required to gain a full understanding of the narrative itself.
