Which live performance disappointed you the most?

I saw Peter Gabriel in ‘94 when he toured Australia as part of his *Secret World Tour* and it was easily the most boring concert I’d ever been to! The only memorable part for me was the last song, *Biko*, as the support act, *Drowning Not Waving* came on and joined in.
Two years later I saw Joan Armatrading and she was easily a better show.

Paul McCartney - Gold Coast 2023?
Outdoor, terrible sound, zero vibe, zero interest.
Having grown up with the man I was expecting a lot more and it really was the worst live show I've ever been to.
BrilliantAd4857@reddit
Springsteen around 2002, I was board throughout. Tied with Kiss during the no makeup years. General seating, we found an empty section further up and played cards. Couldn't leave as we were there with a couple kiss nuts who thought it was awesome.
r2killawat@reddit
GnR early 90's fuckers made us stand there until midnight before they would come out and play. On a weeknight no less. I listened to 1 or 2 songs and dipped. I never gave them another dime of my money. Fuck axle rose.
Unique_Anteater5667@reddit
He was still doing that well in to the 2000’s. One of the best shows I’ve seen was him at the Hollywood Palladium during the Chinese Democracy tour. But he came on at midnight and played until about 3AM. I don’t know how, but getting back together with Slash put a stop to that bullshit.
Mountain-Selection38@reddit
Wife drug me to see Counting Crows. The band was fine but that frontmam was lazy, talentless and basically off key. He was so bad, I was shocked they have made it this far
No_Frosting_5280@reddit
I can’t stand those guys. I don’t remember the singers name, don’t care, and have no idea why they were so popular.
cthulhus_spawn@reddit
Probably sacrilegious but I was really disappointed in David Bowie.
Forward-Parking-9248@reddit
I saw Bowie when he was in his Tin Machine phase in the early/mid '90's. Easily the worst show I've ever seen - the music sucked and he didn't play even ONE classic hit, not even as an encore.
rckblykitn14@reddit
Oh no no I refuse to see this without concrete details and reasons. Bowie is my god. (although if it was at a particular earlier period in his life, I can see it.)
cthulhus_spawn@reddit
With Nine Inch Nails.
rckblykitn14@reddit
Oh wow really?
Was it the eyeliner? The hair? 🤣 Damn, sorry to hear that. I loved that Bowie era.
cthulhus_spawn@reddit
Everyone was walking out. It was just... Low energy.
rckblykitn14@reddit
Ugh. Sad. Sorry to hear that!!

It wasn’t them it was me but I almost fell asleep at Pink Floyd, Yankee Stadium.just pot. I saw them the next night at Giant Stadium on acid - much better!
jayhawkwds@reddit
I was so excited to see Son Volt. They came out and sang their songs. No energy, no crowd interaction, just nothing.
goodthingsp@reddit
You’r going to have to try Wilco 😊
jayhawkwds@reddit
Or Uncle Tupelo. But I was so disappointed.
issafly@reddit
Smashing Pumpkins in the Statehouse Convention Center basement level in Little Rock, Arkansas. Imagine you're in room shaped like a pizza box. The door is on one wall. The bandstand is far away on the opposite wall. There are no chairs and it's extremely dark. Something is wrong with the HVAC, so the whole pizza box is full of the hot musty breath of all the poor idiots standing there in the dark with you.
The sound was horrible ('cuz ... pizza box accoustics). And the band sucked. We left early.
Unique_Anteater5667@reddit
Sounds no better or worse than any day in Arkansas.
BatOutOfHello@reddit
The Misfits a few years ago.
Dropkick Murphys were one of the openers, and they were fine - not the best I've seen them, but they have it a go. But the Misfits sucked. They were incredibly loud and brittle, they took about three minutes in between songs, and Glenn's "banter" was mostly him mumbling "what song do you want to do next, Jerry" even though they apparently had been doing the same set the whole tour.
Just a lousy show.
yazzcabbage@reddit
Agreed. Saw the Philly show.
BatOutOfHello@reddit
Same! Just looked it up - December 2019.
I caught Agnostic Front too. They were pretty good.
And I guess it was nice that DK could play their Christmas song, but…it's not my favorite.
unclejoe1917@reddit
Goddamn. I love the Misfits, but the last thing I need to hear is Glenn Danzig talking about anything.
noisician@reddit
was Danzig back with the Misfits in the past few years?
kittyshakedown@reddit
Milli Vanilli in 1989.
X_Wheeze_souffle@reddit
Unfortunately, Stevie Ray Vaughn. It wasn't his fault tho. The venue security was so heavy handed. We weren't allowed to stand up and dance, or have any kind of fun.
charitytowin@reddit
Jesus, did you see him in 1953?
X_Wheeze_souffle@reddit
It was in the late 80s. A college venue. Totally baffling how shitty the security was. I also saw Ozzy at the same place on his first solo tour and it was a madhouse.
charitytowin@reddit
I saw SRV twice and those are some of the moments that cenented my love of live music that's lasted my lifetime.
I'm really sorry you didn't have a good time, he was a force of nature.
MJ_Brutus@reddit
Gordon Lightfoot put me to sleep. Natalie Merchant smothered the audience in a warm blanket of pretentiousness.
Oddly enough, both shows in the same venue.
Dragonfly_Peace@reddit
You were expecting Lightfoot to be electrifying?
fonebone819@reddit
Not necessarily disappointed, but The Revivalists concert with The Head and the Heart. They were swapping who opened each night, and The Revivalists were the opener that night. I was a bit bummed... but THATH kicked ass! Huge fan now.
Dragonfly_Peace@reddit
The Revivalists were boring?
fonebone819@reddit
Not boring, just didn't have the crowd behind them. Audience was about 1/2 full as well
huck500@reddit
Guns n Roses opening for Cheap Trick in a medium-sized club in '86... they were terrible. I remember the sound being really bad. Cheap Trick were great, though! I saw Guns n Roses open for The Cult later ('87) and they were both great.
Love and Rockets, so boring... maybe because the opener was Jane's Addiction, though, that was '87. I saw Peter Murphy around the same time, and he was really good.
Hoot151@reddit
I saw that Love and Rockets tour and Jane's blew me away. Also saw Nine Inch Nails open for Peter Murphy in '90 and had the same reaction.
Careless_Bar_5920@reddit
Heh. I saw Bauhaus open for NIN in 2006. Fantastic show! Then again, Murphy's been wonderful ever time I've seen him.
Hoot151@reddit
Murphy really was great live. The '90 show when he was still young and had a lot of energy was amazing, plus I couldn't believe I was watching the singer from Bauhaus. Caught Bauhaus in '98 and it was one of the best shows I've seen.
Periwinklie@reddit
Janes Addiction opening for Love and Rockets in 1987 in Seattle at Moore Theater was FANTASTIC! The local opener also blew us away- an unknown band called SOUNDGARDEN.
huck500@reddit
I saw Soundgarden open for Voivod in ‘90, that was one of the best shows ever.
PissedCaucasian@reddit
I saw Pixies open for Love and Rockets. They were amazing. Love and Rockets sucked. They should’ve been the opener.
thehermitary@reddit
George Jones. He was at least half a beat behind the band at all times, and also singing slowly like he was 90 years old and had accidentally wandered on stage.
Charley Pride. Great guy, trying his hardest, but he had a severe cold and was literally blowing his nose or clearing his throat between songs.
MissouriOzarker@reddit
Honestly, if Jones showed up at all you had a better concert experience with him than many people did over the years. What a voice, but what a mess.
MusicalMerlin1973@reddit
Cheap trick. Granted we weren't there to see them. They were the opening act. Joan Jett was the middle (that was @$% awesome). Heart was the headliner. That was fabulous. I loved the Zeppelin covers.
Recently went with my wife to see Heart again. Still great. Starship was the opening act. Meh.
Dramaticflop@reddit
I saw them open for Stone Temple Pilots in ‘96-ish and they were disappointing, I wrote it off to the wrong crowd but now I wonder…. Also saw RHCP with Dave Navarro and their opener, Spacehog, straight up out played them, I was shocked.
dieticewater@reddit
I saw STP in that same tour and I nearly cried at how bad Cheap Trick was and I was almost more excited to see them. STP was amazing though and it’s still one of my top 5 concerts.
MusicalMerlin1973@reddit
One shoe that blew me away was Beck. WTF? Great show but that was some crazy stuff.
Aggressive_Ad60@reddit
I saw BobDylan a couple times in the early mid 90’s… horrible shows!
First time I saw Eric Clapton was amazing, next 2 times were a year or 2 later for different tours..and he played the exact same set for all 3 shows!! Different tours/different years… Lame!! Lazy!!
postwarmutant@reddit
I loved Dylan when I was in college so I saw him a couple times in the 90s as well. No desire to interact with the crowd, was very closed off, and played strange arrangements to his songs.
Which I get, I’d be bored playing the same songs for 30+ years too, but it would often take a minute to realize what the hell song he was playing.
So yeah bad shows.
DodgyRogue@reddit (OP)
Bobby seems to pop up a lot!
rckblykitn14@reddit
I read through all of the comments just now (going back to read the new ones since I originally opened the thread lol - this is my favorite reddit thread in a long time!) and him and Guns n Roses are definitely the top two worst, by a landslide!

Aerosmith in about 2015. They didn’t even sound good when they played Dream On during an encore.
Zelig30@reddit
Smashing Pumpkins
LA Lollapalooza in 1994. The came out dressed as lightbulbs. Corgan didn’t shut up.
WestLondonIsOursFFC@reddit
Iron Maiden at Earl's Court in London. The sound did them no favours and they didn't play "Run To The Hills" or several other standards.
I know bands won't always play the songs you want to hear, but they'd played a couple of warm up gigs in Paris and it was practically a greatest hits set.
Also a bit disappointed with ZZ Top at Wembley a couple of years ago. The crowd was seated the entire time and even though the set was great, they only played for an hour and fifteen minutes. When I'm paying £100 for a ticket, I expect 90 minutes at the absolute least.
Madonna at Earl's Court wasn't great. £95 for a ticket (and this was years ago) for an eighty minute set. There was a very strong suspicion that she was miming - her vocals were exceptionally clean during the wire work.
ChoakIsland@reddit
Saw madonna at the old wembly stadium in the 80s. I was near the front, I swear she was miming back then.
Bob_D_Vagene@reddit
Yes. I saw her in the States on the same tour. I couldn’t believe how bad it was. I recall the show was over pretty quickly too. Maybe an hour long.
WestLondonIsOursFFC@reddit
Was that the "Who's That Girl?" Tour? I saw her there as well. It was just after U2 and Genesis had played multiple nights there and the council insisted the sound be turned down.
I wasn't anywhere near the front, but you could well be right about her miming. I watched a video of "The Virgin Tour" from a few years earlier and she definitely wasn't miming then. The difference was stark.
ChoakIsland@reddit
Blond Ambition. Just checked it was 1990.

My son took me to see The 25th anniversary tour of The Miseducation of Lauren Hill It was in NYC She came late there was no opening band and all songs were performed in a different way then we remembered Then the Fugees came out and stole the show.
PhilDunphythecat@reddit
I went to the show in Newark,NJ for this tour - same exact experience, and she was two plus hours late. It was horrible and it still hurts to say that.

Scorpions ‘91 in Seattle. Legitimately underwhelming. Low Energy.
replayer@reddit
Dire Straits. The music was great but it was the least charismatic band I've ever seen
David Lee Roth was so wasted he couldn't stand up by the encore. Huge waste of money.
A_Gringo666@reddit
David Lee Roth? Dire Straits? When did this occur?
replayer@reddit
DS was late 80s, Madison Square Garden. I remember it was the first time I personally saw someone doing cocaine in a concert. 😂
DLR, early 90s, maybe? Nassau Coliseum.
A_Gringo666@reddit
Sorry dude I'm bit stoned at the moment. I misread. That's two separate concerts. I was thinking an uncharismatic Dire Straits were being fronted by a drunk David Lee Roth. WTF?
throwaway762022@reddit
Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers - maybe 2010. I love their music, but it was surprisingly low energy. ZZ Top, which I like less, was way more engaging.
Nick_Fotiu_Is_God@reddit
Tom Petty is the Matchbox 20 of classic rock. Bland, boring, edgeless rock and roll.
RoughWoodCarpntWorkr@reddit
Are you talking about Post-1987 or so? Then I won't argue with you one bit. But if you're also talking about the late '70s-early '80s output, well, then... I'd have to say you've earned those downvotes.
throwaway762022@reddit
Well, I generally like all music, including bland, boring, edgeless, rock and roll. While I generally like Tom Petty (and Matchbox 20 and Nickleback and Creed and all the other bland groups), it was just so low energy that it was hard to enjoy live.
Shipcaster@reddit
This saddens me greatly.

Madonna Re-Invention World Tour in Florida.
She was over an hour late to start the show (on a week night 🙄) and where our seats were located we could not see the movable screens that had writing on it and the concert just wasn’t good.
Lanky_Asparagus_8534@reddit
Was that her latest tour about 2 yrs ago? We had great seats but the acoustics in the U opted Center sucked! She phoned it in too
Cruise1313@reddit
No that concert was in 2004. The acoustics were also bad where we were sitting.
We were pissed that she was so late because we had to get up early the next day for work then the concert sucked so it made it even worse. 🤦🏻♂️

Bob Dylan 8 years ago
BlaZenDuderino@reddit
Did he quickly mumble scream at the audience about ten of his hits and bolt? He was with Merle Haggard and seemed to genuinely not want to be there. He had released Time Out of Mind I believe and didn't care to sing much of it to a bunch of people who came for the hits I guess.

The Cars Heartbeat City tour. Came out, played the songs on the album, left. Nothing from previous albums. No crowd interaction. Could have had the same experience sitting at home listening to the album.
dispiller@reddit
Brian Jonestown Massacre. Drummer played a great set, but was the only member of the band that made it to the stage.
Glum-Lie-7323@reddit
I saw STYX in the early 80's in Vancouver BC., and it was bad. From the curtain rising (yes, they had a curtain in a 17,000 seat arena) to see Dennis DeYoung in coveralls and pushing a broom. No noise, no music, just him pushing the broom like he is a custodian. He then breaks into a Broadway style melancholic song, and that's about when my buddy Nick and I noped it out of there. Went back to our car, got high as shit and hit the Number 5 Orange to see the lady's perform on stage for a few or 8 pints.
DisastrousWalk8442@reddit
Wu-tang late 90’s I don’t remember the exact year. They were late as hell and so fucked up they just mumbled and laughed while aimlessly pacing around the stage. But hey I saw wu-tang

Never seen them live but they used to frequent the dungeon/sex club I worked at because no on knew who they were and they got left alone for the most part. I slept with one of them and have no idea to this day as to who it was. Oops!

Joan Jett opening for Robert Plant in 1988. I followed Joan since the Runaways and had reasonable expectations.
She barely moved and the songs while serviceable, weren't great. Maybe she was having an off night, but it seemed like a high school performance at best.
Conversely, Robert Plant opened with three killer Zep songs and the encore was Immigrant Song, so the night wasn't a total waste.
gjohill@reddit
Counting Crows Candlebox Don Henley
All bored the shit out of me.
SensitiveArtist@reddit
The Pixies. Musically it was good, but there was 0 acknowledgement of the audience and they seemed like they just wanted to come out, play, get paid, and leave.
vajrasana@reddit
Was this a recent concert or in their heyday? I saw them at Red Rocks in 2005 (admittedly still not their heyday) with the Femmes and it was a pretty solid show. But that was 20 years ago and they’ve been tired for almost 40 years now 😜
SensitiveArtist@reddit
It was while Paz was still in the band but still in the 2020's. Musically, they sounded great, but they just seemed like they really didn't want to be there if that makes sense.
Cars_Music_GoodTimes@reddit
I saw the Pixies at Pine Knob north of Detroit in 2018: they were definitely phoning it in. They were playing their songs at three-quarter tempo and seemed to be playing the gig simply for a paycheck.
drhagbard_celine@reddit
Saw them a couple years ago. They sounded great.
inot72@reddit
Sonic Youth. They were a total drag and seemed really annoyed to be there.
Carrollz@reddit
I had a similar experience with Sonic Youth at the Warfield in the summer of 1990, I thought the opening band was much better.
warriortwo@reddit
Oh that's weird, I saw them at the Warfield on Halloween of 1990.
inot72@reddit
That's the summer I saw them. The Jesus Lizard opened for them in Atlanta.
wizard_of_aws@reddit
Lol, some small trio with a big sound eh?
Kymkryptic@reddit
Yup. I saw them at some festival around 95-96 and I left convinced they had no idea that they were on stage performing. It also seemed like they didn’t know they were playing together in a band at the moment.
No interaction with the fans or with each other and whatever they were doing sounded awful.
Organic_Tradition_94@reddit
Diss them at your own peril. I reviewed a concert they did in 95 and it was just so slow and sluggish. Personally, I thought it was a shit show and I copped so much flack.
The only argument people gave me was “but they played Schizophrenia!”
leftofthedial1@reddit
I was (am still, honestly) a huge Pavement fan but MAN...the set they played at my University in the mid 90 was soooo bad LOL. Just. Absolutely incoherent.

George Carlin.
He started out awesome but about halfway in he went off on a weird political tangent that slowly drifted into not funny. He was almost preaching.
We decided to hang on and see if he came back around but he didn't.
We ended up leaving with a significant portion of the audience.
Disappointing because we aways loved his stuff all the way back to Class Clown.
rckblykitn14@reddit
I didn't care for some of his later stuff because it was just all political. But Toledo Window Box was my Carlin gateway drug when I was maybe 10 or 11 and it's still one of my favorite albums ever.
Joyous-Volume-67@reddit
90 Squeeze opened for Fleetwood Mac, Squeeze tore the house down, Fleetwood Mac was offtune and entirely dissapointing. Saw The Violent Femmes open for the B52's in 92/93, the Femmes rocked so hard, and the B's felt like an afterthought I wished the Femmes just stayed on instead
Neener216@reddit
Squeeze remains, to this day, a criminally undervalued band. I worked in the live music industry for most of my career, and it was always telling when you saw which shows the people in the industry were willing to pay to see, since we all went to concerts pretty much every night for free.
Squeeze is on the very short list of "I'd pay" for me and many others I know.
Carrollz@reddit
I'm so excited to see other Squeeze fans! I've only met one other in real life and everyone else seems to only know Tempted which I do love that song but it confused me for years, not unlike my reverse experience with Rainbow (Down to Earth being one of my all time favorite albums). All their songs are so fun to sing... it would be amazing to have a concert of just them and the Violent Femmes and maybe even add in They Might Be Giants or Split Enz. Or just Squeeze. On the one hand I'm glad to hear they are just as great in concert as I'd expect, on the other hand I'm sad I never got to see them perform live in person.

None of us are dead yet, lol. They just released a new album and are currently on the road - will be in the US in September. Get your behind to a gig!!
SqueezeOfficial
Plenty_Cress_1359@reddit
Only 4 dates in the US? Damn!
Neener216@reddit
Heh. Notice the dates. They're not going to spend a month in the US and only do four shows. All it means is that they're either still in contract/juggling venue avails or the promoters aren't releasing the on-sales for additional shows until they've got their summer shows up and on sale. There will be more shows across the country, and I promise you they're not leaving until they've played NY and Boston, which are always $ dates for them.
Plenty_Cress_1359@reddit
Great point! I have the site saved to go back and check. I’ve never seen them live. Thanks so much for the heads up!!
Neener216@reddit
You will not regret it, I promise. I saw Glenn a few years ago on one of his solo tours stateside, and he still sounds amazing. I remember one tour he did sometime in the mid to late 90s - the date was in New Haven (so probably Toad's Place, but maybe I'm wrong), and it was an acoustic tour. At some point in the middle of the show, he encouraged the entire audience to follow him as he left the venue, still singing. They all wandered down the street and ended up at some fast food joint, where he sang another song or two before they headed back home to the stage to finish his set :)
Plenty_Cress_1359@reddit
Get out! That’s fantastic! If there are no other dates added, Vienna, VA is 6 hours away and I could make a weekend out of it.

Last time a team sounded as goid as Difford and Tilbrook they were called Lennon and McCartney.
Neener216@reddit
FACT. Also? In addition to the songwriting genius and one-of-a-kind vocals, Tillbrook is actually a fantastic guitar-player. Honestly criminal that their catalog isn't more widely appreciated.
PissedCaucasian@reddit
Can you list some others that were worth it?
Neener216@reddit
Definitely Joe Cocker - you were never sure what you were going to get with him, but it was NEVER boring. Even the suits showed up for that gig, lol. He was also the best cover man who ever covered.
Prince - it's safe to say I was more of a New Wave/alt fan, so while I certainly knew every Prince song that had ever charted, I had never spent time digging through his catalog for more obscure things. I saw him do a show during which he dismissed his entire band and then went around the stage to play every single instrument they'd just abandoned. The display of supreme musicianship took my breath away. Literally everyone I've ever worked with would do whatever they needed to do to get to a Prince show; the metalheads, the goths, the alts, the hiphop crowd - everyone showed up. I always say there's really no such thing as a sold out show (we'll figure out a way to get you in if we have to), but Prince shows? SOLD OUT. He was truly special.
The freaking Smithereens, especially for radio station guys. David Bowie. Warren Zevon. The Beastie Boys. I'm doing my best not to make this personal and just trying to recall which shows were always crawling with industry people who I know couldn't have gotten in without paying. It's a weird list and because I'm NYC based, possibly skewed to the East Coast more than the west.

Sister of Mercy. 2023 in Brooklyn. Bad sound and his voice is gone. Should have spent the $$ to have backup vocals
BitterAd4352@reddit
Oh wow The Sisters are mine too! Dallas TX around 2005. The mix through the PA was totally abrasive and overloaded. Sounded like absolute shit. And that line up of the band was terrible.
bowlgar@reddit
I saw Sisters in 2024 and it was a fantastic show. Maybe that was an exception, but I definitely had no complaints.
noseleaptilbklyn@reddit
I’m jealous. SOM is one of my fave bands and I’d never seen them in concert before. The sound was so bad that it just sort of hovered over the stage and did not move outward over the crowd. Plus his voice is shit now. It was so disappointing. But some people who saw them in other cities said it was a good show.

The Deftones in 96 or 97 at the warped tour. Truly terrible. I was so disappointed because I was a big fan. It really sounded like a bad high school talent show cover. Chino has since had vocal training and can actually sing (outside of a studio) now.

izznt@reddit
I saw Tom Petty/Bob Dylan in the late 80’s. Petty was AMAZING…. Then I literally fell asleep during Dylan’s set (which was all of his hits being sung completely differently/slower/different pitch which made the older woman behind me, who apparently had this concert on her bucket list, burst into tears.)
10kforge@reddit
It’s funny, I over heard a guy about 2 years ago telling someone about a terrible experience he had at a show (I didn’t hear who the band was he was talking about though). Eminem. Saw him in the UK at Milton Keynes bowl.
He was actually pretty good, however his support act was Cypress Hill and they absolutely smashed their set, everyone in the place was hype. Luckily for Em, their set was cut short by a power cut. If he has followed them directly he would have died on his arse. It was a bit of a let down after Cypress Hill absolutely rocked everyone’s world.
rckblykitn14@reddit
Cypress Hill opened for Linkin Park back in 2002 and I'll never forget them bringing out, packing, and smoking, a 6-foot bong. We were up against the rail and tried so hard to get a contact high because we were too chickenshit to bring weed in with us 😂. That show was incredible all around too.

Probably about 20 years ago I saw Dropkick Murphys, the show started late and they were just kinda “meh”, so I left half way through
rckblykitn14@reddit
Was it in or anywhere adjacent to Boston? I swear to god they're fucking amazing for the hometown crowds (I'm from RI and saw them in/around Boston many a time 25ish years ago) but anywhere else I've always heard they're meh.
warriortwo@reddit
I saw Supergrass twice. They were so shockingly boring the first time, I thought, how is that even possible? So I saw them again and...meh. No stage presence at all.

Natalie Merchant at Lilith Fair. She yelled at us for enjoying a concert while people were DYING (I think the Congo war was happening). Later she stopped playing the piano midsong and said “This piano is ruining my ever loving vibe”. Sarah McLachlan had to come out and help her finish her set. I was so excited to see her (drove 10 hours) and it was such a bad performance.
TheDjSKP@reddit
10,000 Maniacs played my school in 1990 or 1991 and Natalie stopped the show twice to complain about people smoking (back then, you could still smoke in lots of places but I swear no one was smoking in that venue)
I went backstage having been given an opportunity to meet her, and she stood there for a second and walked off. We were warned she had a cold and it would need to be quick, but it was nonexistent
unclejoe1917@reddit
Never was a fan, so I don't really care either way, but I've heard on a couple other occasions that Merchant is an absolutely insufferable person.

The week I got discharged from the military I was able to catch a concert in Des Moines. It was June 1995. Danzig/ Suicidal Tendencies/ Metallica. Caught most of Danzig and liked it. First and only time I saw him live. He gives good onstage presence. 2 songs in during Suicidal it starts raining and Mike Muir slips and gashes his leg pretty badly. He finished the song and maybe one more but cut the set short and went to the hospital for stitches. I was disappointed but I didn't blame Mike. I was up against the barricade and could see that cut up close. I was one of the rare crossover punk and metal fans that appreciated them.
There was a pause and Metallica started playing at sunset. I had seen Metallica play several times before and knew that seeing them live was amazing. Towards the end of the set something horrible happened. They took my 8 favorite songs from Ride the Lightning and Kill 'Em All and mashed them into a 5 minute medley. I could not have been more shocked if they started playing Clang Clang Went the Trolley. I and a bunch of others stopped yelling and jumping about and just looked at each other incredulously.
I had opportunities to see Suicidal again and I went. I've never seen Metallica live after that. Then Load and Reload and Napster happened. I considered myself to have been immunized ahead of all that.
rckblykitn14@reddit
At this point in their career....don't give them any ideas!! 😂
Couscousfan07@reddit
Damn dude you got cheated. Danzig and Suicidal together is awesome.
Seen Metallica live once and that was enough. They tune down the songs, increase the tempo to Ridiculous Speed, the drummer sucks, not worth it live.
vistaculo@reddit
I saw Danzig and Suicidal, that was a crazy show.
vistaculo@reddit
Say what you want about Glenn Danzig, but he 100% puts on a good show.
I’ve seen him three times, twice solo and once in Misfits, every time was good, even if it was ridiculous. At the Misfits show they literally played every single song, pretty sure they played for almost three hours. And he shows up on time too.
aracnadei@reddit
Saw Metallica on their black album tour for my first concert and genuinely didn't understand why anyone would ever go to a concert after that experience. They were amazingly terrible. So clearly sniffing their own farts after they got some fame. At one point, they just started trading instruments and "jamming". Not even playing their own songs or playing them badly. Kirk did a full minute or two solo just rubbing the guitar on his ass, then they all laughed for another minute or two. Seriously, wtf? Second concert was Gwar and I finally got it. RIP Dave.

Tiger Army. They are an amazing psychobilly band in the studio but absolutely awful live. Off time, out of key. They must require a lot of practice to get their studio sound so tight.
The second time I saw them, they were opening up for Social Distortion. When Social Distortion came on stage, Mike Ness commented on how badly Tiger Army sounds live. You know it’s bad when the headliner is taking shots at their opening act.
rckblykitn14@reddit
Mike Ness has never been one to pull any punches, but damn that's harsh hahaha.

If I remember correctly, it was Tiger Army’s last night opening for Social D. No punches were pulled!!

Marilyn Manson. He had zero energy and performed the majority of his set laying down. It was incredibly bad.
Couscousfan07@reddit
You need to specify a year.
I don’t doubt that Brian is mailing it in these days, but early Marilyn Manson, when they were still a band back in the 90s, were awesome.
rckblykitn14@reddit
Man my high school boyfriend and I went to see them in like, 96 or so at a tiny little venue in town. We were huge fans and that show was so good. That was when he was just Marilyn Manson weird and not irl weird, far as we knew. I think I caught a newer song a few weeks ago and I'm not into it, but I'd still put on Portrait every now and then.
WiseDebt7345@reddit
I saw Marilyn Manson last year, and he put on a good show. I think he got off the booze recently.
autochthonous@reddit
Oh, this was like 2019 or something. Not in his prime, at all. But he was touring with Rob Zombie and Zombie had an insane amount of energy. That dude can high kick like a ninja.

PigInZen67@reddit
Caught GnR opening for The Cult at the Warfield in SF. Sloppiest concert ever, and both bands were trash. I think I remember Guns ‘n Roses being booed and telling the crowd to fuck off, lol.
Periwinklie@reddit
Thats odd- the G n R show in Seattle opening for the Cult in 1987-88 was one of the best shows I've ever attended. They were both amazing!

same , left early had to work in the morning and GnR didn’t start till midnight or later as i recall.
meandhimandthose2@reddit
Counting crows about 2006? It was at an outdoor amphitheatre place in Nashville. The sound wasn't great, but he sang every song completely different to how it usually sounds, so you only recognised a song if you could pick out a word or two. Googoo Doll's were also there and sounded so much better.
neskatan@reddit
Even though Miles Davis was 2.5 hours late to his gig in Seattle and high as a kite it was still a better experience than either of the Grateful Dead shows I went to. Sadly, their music just meant nothing to me and I thought they sucked as performers. I was so excited to see what the hype but I guess I just have different taste. After the second Dead show (I really wanted to like them) I stepped in dog shit in the parking lot so that was the last straw.
PolarisSpica@reddit
Miles Davis was my worst concert experience. I was so psyched to see/hear him in person. He, however, was not. Spent the whole time playing with his back to the audience, hunched over, like he’d rather be anywhere else. None of the energy that makes a live performance different from putting on a record.

David Bowie. Glass Spider tour in San Jose. Was probably an epic show, but I really wanted some Ziggy Stardust. Setlist left me unsatisfied. I’m sure it was my problem.
rckblykitn14@reddit
As a huge Bowie fan who never got the opportunity to see him, I'm curious if all these years later, you still feel disappointed by that show. I can totally understand that (love Ziggy), but to be fair, he had warned the world that Ziggy was done. 🤭
Objective_Clue_3091@reddit
I’m honestly more disappointed in myself for not making the effort to appreciate it. Not hearing Changes or Ziggy just bummed me out so much. But I was 22. What the hell did I know.

Rolling Stones Steel Wheels tour. Keith played a different set list than the rest of the band. So disappointed.
Gamma_Chad@reddit
Came here to say this... Living Color blew them off the stage. Speaking of which, the set was so massive, half the time you were like "is that Mick WAAYYYYY up there?"
I did get to see them probably 8-9 years ago and they totally redeemed themselves.
Embarrassed-Bench392@reddit
I lived close enough to Gillette Stadium when they came around the next time that I could hear the concert while I sat on my deck sipping beers from my fridge. They sounded much better that show. I promised myself that I wouldn't pay to see the Stones ever again after Steel Wheels.
rckblykitn14@reddit
Oh damn that's awesome!!! I bet you got a lot of cool free shows living there. I worked at Waste Management (in patriot place next to the stadium) ten years ago when Metallica played. I wanted to go SO bad but couldn't afford it. But they did soundcheck while I was on lunch and I got to stand on our terrace and listen to it. Closest I've ever been to seeing them live lol but it was so cool.
Embarrassed-Bench392@reddit
Yes, but it really depended on which way the wind was blowing as to whether the sound was good or not and how loud the performers were.
rckblykitn14@reddit
Ah true. There were always concerts there but Metallica is the only one I remember hearing soundcheck from.

Frank Black’s first solo tour at First Avenue in Minneapolis after the Pixies’ 90’s break-up. He basically performed his just his album, as he wasn’t doing Pixies tunes. Good, but underwhelming. It did not help that Reverend Horton Heat opened and had 1000% more energy - I was an instant fan and have seen the Rev several times since.
Tim-oBedlam@reddit

Teenager Of The Year is a great album.
And to be fair, he was promoting that, not Pixies. I can’t imagine him doing them justice without Joey Santiago anyway.
I saw Alex Chilton once and people were calling for Big Star songs. He straight up said, this is an Alex Chilton concert, not a Big Star concert.
Mudlark-000@reddit
I used to see Bob Mould do solo shows at First Avenue. He’d perform Hüsker Dü, Sugar, and solo songs - it was great. He had a policy of not making any of his bands perform solo or other bands’ material.
I realize Frank Black was promoting his album, but damn it was a short show and the band he had really hadn’t gelled as a live act yet.
Organic_Tradition_94@reddit
I saw Frank at a festival in Australia and it was a great show from what I remember. I might have been swayed by the fact Pixies had never toured there to that point. I think he had Eric Drew Feldman from Pere Ubu on bass. The breeders and the Amps also toured around the same time and were way better though.
You’re lucky to have seen solo Bob Mould live.

The Police reunion tour. F-ing Sting wanted to turn every song into slow jazz, boss’s novas, or adult contemporary music. I came to rock out, not see watered down versions of the classics. Copeland and Summers were 100% on point, but sting was not happy to be doing it. The happiest and most energetic he looked all night was when he walked offstage. He could barely remember the words to his own songs, mumbling them half the time and giving the other two nasty looks at the rate mistakes. The pompous a-hole also made sure the cameras were on him most of the time. I hope Sting loses the law suit, has to pay out handsomely, and has to do another tour so Andy and Stewart can say no this time.

Guns n Roses. Twice.
I saw them as the opening act in 1986 and 1988. They forgot the lyrics and did second takes on guitar solos. They were somehow worse at the second show. I was genuinely surprised they became as big as they did. The last gasp of hair metal.

Time for me to tell my favourite Guns n Roses story again!
Before they broke through, they were supporting INXS on a US tour.
INXS being fairly easy going blokes, Axl Rose decided they were weak and spent the whole tour going round telling everyone he wanted to fight Michael Hutchence. Hutchence, not wanting any of that, did his best to ignore him.
Until, one night, Axl finally gets in his face, demanding a fight. Hutchence tries to walk away but 'Axl' is not having it.
So Hutchence turns around, lays him out with one punch, then walks away.
See, INXS came up on the Australian pub circuit, in the 70s. Mostly in venues where you play behind chicken wire so you don't get bottled. So they could handle themselves in a fight. They just didn't see the need. Because they're not twats.
Positive_Chip6198@reddit
Axl was and is such a diva, amazing vocal range. But as you say, what a twat.

Pantera. Saw them at Ozzfest in DC. Phil seemed like he was so drunk he couldn't sing or just didn't care to. The rest of the band seemed annoyed and they stopped playing after about 4 songs. Glad I wasn't specifically there to see them. Saw lots of Pantera shirts at the show though, I'm guessing there were a lot of disappointed people.
Roger Waters' show was a little preachy and hypocritical but overall, still enjoyable. The fifth time I saw the Misfits it was at Altarbar in Pittsburgh. All of their other shows had been great, but this had Jerry singing after Michael had left the band. I don't know if it was that or if the acoustics sucked but it was not a great show, difficult for me to even make out which song was which, which for someone that listened to as much Misfits as I did at the time was something.

Mudhoney and Sonic Youth (same festival: Endfest, 1992, Seattle).
Admittedly, I had zero expectations for Sonic Youth, and believe me: they couldn't meet those non-existent expectations (they were drunk and sounded like shit). But I just expected more from Mudhoney while they were supporting the Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge album. I thought, 'these guys are going to be the next big thing!' while grunge was in full swing.
They were loud, terrible and, most important to these kinds of experiences, 'entitled'.
That is, it feels like they went out thinking, 'it doesn't matter what we do or how we play, because we've made it!', which always leads to mediocre or crappy performances. And they hadn't even 'made it'. The entire scene was thriving on the backs of people who took risks (Nirvana), worked hard (Soundgarden), and put out great songs for the time (Stone Temple Pilots).
InsideGateway@reddit
I as at that festival. Now that you mention it, Mudhoney did seem pretty off. I don’t remember Sonic Youth’s set, but I was probably one of the kids throwing mud, so not really paying attention.

Bob Dylan some time in the 90’s. He acted like he couldn’t give a rat’s ass if we were there or not. He just walked out, played his set and left.
A close second was REM. Towards the end of the show the crowd started chanting that they wanted to hear Superman. Stipe grabbed the mike and said “I hate that fucking song and we aren’t playing it tonight.” Talk about being dowsed with cold water. The crowd was pretty subdued after that and the group wasn’t really cheered when they were done.

I googled it for deeper context. This is essentially what I remember him saying, although I don’t think it’s the same interview I heard it from.
“To his credit, in the book, Corgan approaches this era of his life with self-reflection, indicating that he knows he was (is?) hard to deal with, and explaining that a lot of it has to do with the fact that Nirvana was supposed to be the headliner but when they dropped off the Smashing Pumpkins were automatically make the news headliners.
“You talk about going into Middle America at the height of MTV, in 1994, and I was twenty-six or twenty-seven. I was not prepared for that at all,” he said, also noting that there was palpable tension between himself and the fans
“So we’re headlining what became historically the biggest Lollapalooza ever. And there they are,” he said. “There are the same football players who used to bully us in the hallways. I looked at it as, like, ‘No. You’re the enemy and we are here to take you on.’” Finally, Corgan somewhat backed up Coyne’s position by sharing that there have been multiple people who’ve told him that they “refuse to ever see the band or listen to the band” after seeing them at Lollapalooza 30 years ago”

They sucked at Lollapalooza, but I saw them on a headlining tour and they sucked then, too

The Cars. Final tour. Just stood there. Nothing special until the last song when lights fell on springs from the ceiling above the stage. Bouncing lights were the high point.

Bare Naked Ladies in 2016.
O.M.D. and Howard Jones opened for them and just killed it, like so full of energy and had the crowd dancing and singing. I even met Paul Humphreys of OMD later in the crowd and got a selfie with him. It was awesome. And Howard Jones turns his show into a rave at the end and it is electric. I saw him again in 2022 with Midge Ure (my draw as Ultravox is my #1 favorite of the 80s) and will be seeing him again this August. His show is just so damn fun.
But the Ladies, just dull and lifeless. I think they split up not long after which probably explained it, but as the headliners they clearly weren't worthy.

FredLives@reddit
Nope they’re still together. Saw them last summer, was a great show
Plenty_Cress_1359@reddit
Steven Page is no longer with them. I saw BNL right after he was gone and they sucked
FredLives@reddit
Yeah he was gone around 2009, sucks your experience wasn’t the same as mine.
Plenty_Cress_1359@reddit
We saw them in Orlando the first tour after he left. They stood around and talked to each other, played a few chords and talked some more. I’ve seen them a total of 9 times and without Page’s amazing voice? They totally fucking suck IMO.

Blind Melon. I was so stoked to catch them and they were awful. Well, Shannon was awful, specifically. High AF, out of tune, forgetting words, etc. One of the worst shows I ever paid to attend. He died not long after.
AD80AT@reddit
Saw BM on their way up (pre-No Rain) in a small hall. The opening band was local and popular, and most of the crowd was their to see them. I don't think anyone knew who Blind Melon was at that point. They played like they had something to prove that night, and they pulled it off. Great show.
Saw them a few years later opening for Neil Young, and it wasn't nearly as good.
Lower-Yam-620@reddit
You might be the first and only person I’ve ever heard complain about a Peter Gabriel show.

DMB in I think the late 90s, Rosemont Horizon outside of Chicago. First off, it's a terrible venue. Second, I'm not a huge DMB fan, I was there for a friend, so they only played like one song I recognized. Half of the crowd was baked before the concert and the other half were 14 year olds there with their moms. And then we had to get out of the parking lot. IYKYK
Emotional_Mess261@reddit
Chicago a few years ago when they toured with REO and played only the entirety of Chicago II. A double album from 1970 in like 2019. Left after a couple of songs. Didn’t feel bad, got $25/ticket thru Live Nation and didn’t have to fight traffic leaving. ✌🏻

Lucious Jackson in Boulder in the mid 90s. Eels opened up for them and were so much better.
nebodiwantapnut@reddit
Once I saw La Roux open for New Order at Bill Graham Civic auditorium. NO sounded shitty and La Roux sounded great. Maybe it was the equipment or the venue or they had an off night. NO sounded a lot better at other later shows.
cymster@reddit
We saw NO in the early 2000s in London and they were on fire! But I guess all bands have bad gigs sometimes.
MrSpud45@reddit
2002 at Finsbury Park? Great gig, despite it being sodden wet before they came on. Air were 1 of the support acts - didn't feel that a large outdoor venue suited them.
cymster@reddit
Ok, so I asked my other half...We saw them in October 2001, London Brixton Academy and it was indoors. Don't remember any openers (would have liked to see Air).

Bob Dylan, 1991. Almost walked out. I thought he was drunk or having a stroke.

Saw him in 97 and loved it. However i was young so didn’t have much perspective. More just stoked to see him live
snap802@reddit
I saw Dylan in maybe 02 I think and it was awful. It was a last minute thing and I was pretty stoked but the show was a tremendous let down.
nrith@reddit
I had been looking forward to the 1991 show for weeks because big acts like Dylan rarely came to the backwater where I lived.
What’s a little funny, and maybe says more about me than about him, is that I found a bootleg of that show a few years ago, and it’s not nearly as horrible as I remember it.

I'm a huge The The fan and have been since the 80s. I've only managed to get to see them play live twice throughout the decades and I've been horribly underwhelmed on both occasions. I think one album (possibly Mind Bomb) had the following written in the sleeve notes: This album is best listened to very late, very loud and very alone. Unfortunately I think that may be true. Just hated seeing the live show.

Also a massive The The fan - been to many concerts and yeah can be hit and miss but more hit for me.

I’ve seen her a few times. She has a way of knowing when you want to sing along and changing the melody and tempo enough, mid-song, so you can’t possibly sing along. Still an awesome musician and singer, but it’s not a satisfying hug your row-mate type of show.

I saw Metallica in 1987 at monsters of Rock and they were atrocious. They were also heavily self-medicated. Saw them again a couple years ago and they redeemed themselves. Clean. Metallica is an awesome show.
I recently saw Foreigner. They were lackluster but that was expected. I wouldn't go see them if they were headlining, but they were opening for someone else.
Also saw Hank Williams Jr. A couple years ago. Absolutely terrible. No energy. No stage presence. Just got out there. Talked about himself and sang.
On the opposite side of that, I saw the Allman Brothers in the mid-1990s. Dickie Betts was on fire and Greg Allman played piano like he was possessed. He looked to be straight out of rehab but God he played that piano like no other.
Ok_Ad8249@reddit
It's funny to see you say Hank Williams Jr. A friend of mine saw him years ago and said he'd never seen a concert with so many technical issues. He said roadies were on stage the whole time trying to fix something. He said the funniest was Hank kept trying to play this double neck bass which never worked. Halfway through the show in works for 5 seconds then cuts out. He finally gave up on it completely.
rezin44@reddit
I was also at monsters at the cotton bowl, Metallica and Van Halen were both awful. Like you said self medicated , their playing was off and crowd interaction was pitiful. I felt cheated.

Melodic_Caramel1777@reddit
Husband and I saw Elvis Costello in the mid 2000s. We were super excited as we‘re big fans. He came out, explained something about how the first half would be his band playing music from a new album or project of his, then he walked off stage. He performed after the intermission and that part of the show was fantastic. But it was so weird and we had no idea he’d do that, felt let down and a bit ripped off, too.
Plenty_Cress_1359@reddit
He’s my worst as well
JoelPilgrim@reddit
Bob Dylan seems like he hates his own music and his audience for liking it, and his concerts reflect that feeling. When we saw him like 10 or more years ago he turned every beautiful melody into a droning, unrecognizable dirge.
CowboyLaw@reddit
I read somewhere that his concerts are an absolute coin flip: you’re going to get either the best or the worst concert you’ve ever attended, no in between.
Outrageous-Taro7340@reddit

Van Halen, 2007. David Lee Roth returned for the tour. I did a little Googling and Eddie was hit or miss that tour due to his addiction issues, apparently we got the miss version of the show. All great except Boy George. Super low energy. He barely moved. Songs were ok but not what I’d call either a fateful studio reproduction or a nice concert version.
QuizzicalWizard@reddit
We were lucky enough to see Boy George as Harold Zidler in Moulin Rouge on Broadway a couple of years ago. He was great in the role and the very end of the show was a mini Boy George concert. He sang his 80's hits and our Gen-X hearts almost exploded.

Black Crowes in 1994, at H.O.R.D.E. at SPAC. They were so bad that I literally saw everyone walking out. Blues Traveler was also pretty bad, but Phish was the headliner and actually made up for it.
The Black Crowes set was so over modulated, it was as if they were trying to piss everyone off. I don’t even think they finished their set, to be honest. I think Chris figured it out and they cut the set short.
It was bad.
Blues Traveler was just boring and it seemed like their guitarist was in the wrong band.

Hank Williams Jr. Was set to perform later but came out with an acoustic and no backup and took his place. Sang by himself for 45 minutes to keep the crowd happy before another act could be readied.

Saw Jennings as part of The Highwaymen when they toured Australia, the show was good. Cash looked like death warmed over when he came out on stage but once they got started he livened up. I heard he suffered from stage fright and it takes a bit for him to get going
1043b@reddit
Stage fright I totally get. But that man was totally pissed off and went on a rant. Maybe he needed a rowdier crowd to get going but he was downright mean and vitriolic about it. Had an awful lot to say if it was a stage fright issue to be sure
DodgyRogue@reddit (OP)
It was Cash that had the fright, not Jennings. Sounds like Jennings was just being an arsehole.

Smashing Pumpkins were terrible. Between Billy Corgan's voice, the terrible sound engineer and the band playing every song too fast, I was very let down. As much as I love them, seeing a-ha was like watching an oil painting. Zero stage presence whatsoever; they could give shoegazers a run for their money.
More recently, I went to the Lost 80s Live festival, hosted by Richard Blade, where a ton of those old New Wave bands like A Flock Of Seagulls and The Polecats played. Most of them were pretty good, tho the sets were pretty abbreviated, but Josie Cotton actually had to stop one of her songs partway through because ~~the two homeless people she grabbed off the street to be her~~ backing band were screwing it up so badly. That, and Belious Some was like the uncle we all have who shows up drunk at a wedding and does karaoke even tho there's no karaoke machine.

Counting Crows - I’ve seen them twice and both times Adam Duritz changed the lyrics of almost all of the songs while singing. From what I’ve read that’s typical and some people really like that. I wanted to hear the songs as I knew them, or at least the majority of them.

Good call. I have to agree. The time I saw them in LA, Adam kept falling all over the stage.
Oddly though, I actually met him once. I didn't let on that I knew who he was. We were in The Viper Room in Hollywood, and he's instantly recognizable. There's no wondering. Haha.
He asked me what time it was. I remember it was 12:30am. Thanks! End of conversation.

Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Getaway Tour. My first show with them, so no idea if this is SOP for them, but... Anthony didn't speak once to the audience. Flea spoke once and thanked the crowd at the end. Low energy show, felt very much like they were just putting in the time until they could leave.

Bummer about Peter Gabriel. I’ve seen him twice over the past couple decades (“Growing Up” and “New Blood” tours) and both times were great.
Worst concert I’ve seen in recent years was Dinosaur Jr… I think he was opening for Jane’s Addiction. He just hid behind a stack of speakers. For all I know, it was pre-recorded and he wasn’t actually there. I hate when there’s no audience interaction / shared energy. What’s the point?

Mike Patton also. Maybe it was my fault too for having expectations but it was one of his side project groups at a venue in NYC. He just spun records and growled, sound was dogshit. Luckily the place had some good drinking areas, and the fans kinda laughed it off together.

REM, though it wasn’t necessarily their fault. I waited for hours, going numb in January, to buy tickets straight from the venue, but was happy with lawn seats. They sold out so fast, they announced a second show… the day before. When I saw them, Stipes’ voice was shot from that show. They just played Monster and a few other songs.

I never saw any of that, but of the many shows of theirs I went to, there was one at Berklee where it seemed like there were technical problems with the venue and the sound system and they had this pissed-off, listless energy because of it. That was just the one, though.
DodgyRogue@reddit (OP)
I only saw these guys one and it was an excellent show, they had so much energy! A friend told me they were playing in Sydney the next night so I rode three and a half hours and was able to buy a ticket from a dude who’s friend couldn’t make it. I only had to pay the face value, too!
AdditionalTip865@reddit
Most of the time, they're an amazing live band.
vistaculo@reddit
Agree, I’ve seen them twice, great both times
FightPhoe93@reddit
I was so looking forward to a combo concert of Peter Gabriel and Sting back in 2016. It wasn’t a bad concert, but I found it much more mediocre than I expected considering both artists are fantastic.
So I was disappointed that it was just okay as maybe my expectations were just too high because of the talents of both those guys.
vistaculo@reddit
I saw Peter Gabriel and Sting in 1985(?) it was really good
DMFD_x_Gamer@reddit
I saw Van Halen in the 80s, Eddie was so drunk he could barely play. Did an Eddie Jump and fell.
Saw Marilyn Manson around 2016. He was so shitfaced he couldn't sing. Ended his show early.
irishgator2@reddit
New Order in the late 80’s same!! Wasted, couldn’t remember the lyrics, and played less than an hour.
Tim-oBedlam@reddit
Son Volt. I was a huge fan of Uncle Tupelo but they broke up before I could see them. Wilco was terrific live, so I assumed SV would be and they...weren't. Jay Farrar looked like he was absolutely miserable on stage. No stage presence at all.
I don't know if they had a bad night or what, but it was pretty disappointing.
AddendumParticular25@reddit
It wasn’t just a bad night. I’ve seen them twice. JF just stands there, sings everything in a monotone, a total bore.
Tim-oBedlam@reddit
That's exactly what he did when I saw them. Monotone is the perfect description.
IGHOTI907@reddit
The Cars, 1983-1984 ish. Every song performed exactly like the album. Band didn't engage with each other or the audience, and everyone looked glued in place.
Difficult-Papaya1529@reddit
Saw the same tour and has always stuck with me how boring it was. Love their albums, but live…super meh.
PurpleTangerine78@reddit
I remember that, but at the time I was just excited that they didn’t spend half their concert chit chatting.
TheKingSlacker@reddit
Same.. The opener was Wang Chung which was a lot better..
PurpleTangerine78@reddit
Geeze, I don’t even remember seeing them. 😣
PissedCaucasian@reddit
I’ve seen the Beastie Boys twice and they were underwhelming both times. Once at Lala in Pittsburgh and other time in an arena in Cleveland. In Pittsburgh they just didn’t seem into it and in Cleveland the sound of the basketball arena was terrible. I still LOVE their music but they didn’t blow me away live. Oh well.
Signal_Glittering@reddit
I recently saw the Indigo Girls. I love the Indigo Girls. I was hoping for that 80s 90s magic but I forgot that they aged, just like me. I walked out.
morrismoses@reddit
That's sad. I saw them live 5-6 times in the 90s (prob 91-98), and they were always flawless and fantastic.
DodgyRogue@reddit (OP)
How dare they!

Bush in, I think, '95. The sound was bad, the energy was low, everything seemed off.

was so excited to see the New York Dolls at the House of Blues in Chicago somewhere around 98 - David Johannson was so fucking bombed out he could barely sing the lyrics that were in front of him on a music stand while he mostly sat.

The Jesus and Mary Chain, in San Francisco on the Darklands tour in 1987 was by far the worst show I’ve seen.
On stage were just the two brothers. They played for only 45 minutes, had a pre-recorded bass/trumpet track, and stood in one place facing away from the audience the whole time. I’m still bitter about that show
correct_use_of_soap@reddit
Interesting; I just saw them and they were amazing. But that doesn't surprise me about an 87 show...

Snoop. Saw him with 311 nearly 20 years ago, and he was soooo boring. Kept interrupting his songs to talk. We had actually sprung for seats that year instead of lawn (ex and I went every summer), and Snoop was definitely not worth the extra money.
Positive_Chip6198@reddit
Beastie boys at roskilde festival. Seems they only wanted to play their new album nobody knew, the crowd only came alive when they played intergalactic and sabotage as the last entries.

Joe Cocker in Rotterdam, sometime in the early nineties . Sooo boring
NapoleonBlownapart9@reddit
Porno For Pyros in like ‘96 or something. I felt cheated that I missed my chances to see Jane’s Addiction before they broke up so this was my consolation prize. They were like an hour late, there was no opener, Perry Farrell was shit-hammered on wine and mushrooms and kept rambling about “being full of mushroom heads” while spilling Chianti everywhere. They played like 20 minutes then left. Shortest show I ever saw performed by “pros”.
Tim-oBedlam@reddit
Perry Farrell was drunk and obnoxious? Impossible!
Tralfaz1138@reddit
The performance that disappointed me the most was a weird one. I went to see Love and Rockets with Mighty Lemon Drops as an opener at a college basketball gym (so standing room only and no seats). At this time, Love and Rockets were also messing with their "experimental group" The Bubblemen (which I actually didn't realize before going to the concert).
So, they come out as The Bubblemen to perform the few songs they had. They were bizarre, which was OK and unexpected, so I enjoyed that. Then there was a LONG break because the Mighty Lemon Drops didn't make it there for the concert. Eventually Love and Rockets come out and they were OK, but there was really no energy to them. I don't even know if anyone called for an encore by that point so it really just felt like they came out, played their set, then left. Not much more to it.
willysnax@reddit
Wasn't a huge fan of Duran Duran but they were one of the openers for David Bowie. They absolutely butchered their own songs. Their sound setup was awful and they put zero effort into their performance. Heard rumours they thought they were on equal billing with Bowie as if it were a festival and not an opener. Don't know if that's true or not but horrible live show.
Detroitdays@reddit
I say this as a 40 plus year Duranie. Duran wasn’t in the best place circa 1987. Their “comeback” after losing 2 original members. I didn’t see that set (you must be Canadian) but I did see their 87 headline tour and yes, it wasn’t my favorite.
willysnax@reddit
Yep, it was Bowie's Glass Spidet tour in Winnipeg, MB
Johoski@reddit
That's tragic. I also was never a fan but saw them for the first time at a festival last year and they played one of the tightest, most polished sets I'd ever seen
willysnax@reddit
Everyone can have an off day and if anything, I actually grew to like and appreciate them more after that show for some reason. Some of their best stuff came after that tour and they became more than just the "teeny bopper band for little girls" rep they had at that time.
It doesn't surprise me that they put on a good show when you saw them.
Fatbloke-66@reddit
Boy George at one of those 'Remember the 80s' combo shows - he just didn't sound like I expected him to.
Also saw Meat Loaf in Vegas a few years before he passed. Couldn't hold the notes anymore - such a shame.
babsthemonkey@reddit
Blues Traveler. We were outdoors on a super hot day, facing the sun, so I was already cranky (not the band’s fault). The band started late and performed mostly covers. The venue enforced a hard stop by 10 because of houses nearby, so hitting the stage late was a big issue. A waste of our evening.
No_Maintenance_9608@reddit
I saw them one year, and similar situation my ticket was for an outdoor area and it was warm. While the performance was good it seemed underwhelming too. It was after John Popper got his gastric bypass. While his performance was good I was told pre-surgery he would've been incredible.
NiceWholesomeGuy@reddit
Simple Minds a few years back. Like watching your grandpa play mid tempo dirges with his 2 friends. Sunglasses, poncy scarves and sequened dinner jackets. So sad. Even Jim Kerr bemoaned it all. Left halfway and found the opening act all eating burgers at the burger bar across the road from the venue. Evidently even they had not followed the advice of Ole Jimbo "Dont you, forget about me".
oranbhoy@reddit
Saw them in the summer and they were brilliant, they have a great young female drummer who really adds a lot to the group
izznt@reddit
We went to a nostalgia double header of Ambrosia and the Little River Band. Ambrosia was amazing and sang their hearts out. LRB (who we were excited for) looked bored and played to a recording.
We walked out right after “Reminiscing” and ran into the Ambrosia guys in the parking lot who were pulling out in pickups and trailers. We and a bunch of other people who had also walked out yelled to them that they kicked LRB’s ass and clapped as they pulled away.

Back in the day I would say this about Rush. And I hate to say that because Rush is a top tier musical act. But, I only said that because they sounded exactly like the record. Nothing different live. Back in the day I expected a 'live' version.
I think if I was to see Rush now I would have a different perspective. Precision and musicianship is worth seeing live.
EStreetCat@reddit
Sting was the worst concert I ever saw. He had zero stage presence. I can't say I was disappointed though, since I really wasn't into him in the first place. A friend had an extra ticket.
Biggest disappointment was seeing Cake last year. The singer was drunk and annoying. Every other song he wanted the audience to clap and/or sing along, and he just went on forever with it. I don't mind audience participation, but it was way too much. I know they're past their prime, but so are a lot of groups I see now and they still put on a decent show
clewing1@reddit
Fleetwood Mac - I forget the year, but they made such a big deal about Lindsey and Stevie being together on stage. Low energy, house lights way too high, and everyone there seemed more interested in buying beer/snacks/merch than the show. (I remember them selling cheap ass tambourines in the stands.)
Second was Elton John. Never a huge fan, but he’s a legend, right? The production values stank. Like it looked like he’d made the graphics in PowerPoint using clip art. And he got really pissy part way through because something wasn’t right.
Fish-Weekly@reddit
I saw Ozzy Osbourne on the Diary of a Madman tour in high school and honestly the show was kind of a mess, his voice was shot, he mostly screamed his way through the performance.
In retrospect, I got to see Randy Rhoads right before his death in a plane crash. One of the all time great rock and roll guitar players.
Couscousfan07@reddit
That entire tour was a mess. That was the same tour with biting the head off the pigeon, peeing on the Alamo, etc right ?
Fish-Weekly@reddit
Yes to the pigeon thing! And Randy Rhoads died when the airplane he was in was buzzing the tour bus as a prank. So yeah…

Saw The Cult years ago. Absolutely brutal show. Don't know if Ian Astbury had a cold or if all his studio work was voice enhanced cause he couldn't sing worth anything. His voice was awful live. The crowd didn't boo but they didn't cheer either. More stunned silence as they walked off. No encore. Was a huge fan too.

Guns n Roses in 93. Missed out on seeing them in 88 and opening for Maiden. It was just a low energy show. Apparently Axl girlfriend had dumped him the night before. He came out and sat on the stage for the first few songs. They sound fine but the show just sucked.
Green_Machine_6719@reddit
Same, Guns n Roses ‘92 along w/Metalica …Axl stopped the show at least 6 different times for wardrobe changes (show killer) of course some of them included T-shirt w/image of his model girlfriend that eventually left him. That show was trash, never saw them again🤬

No Doubt. Technically, they were okay, but something just wasn’t clicking for us. Blink 182 saved the day though. They fucking rocked.
Beautiful_Arm8364@reddit
Out of acts I actually really wanted to see, I was probably most disappointed in Elvis Costello at the Guiness Fleadh (Chicago, '97). He decided to do a "stripped down set," and instead of a full band, it was just him, a piano, and a guy playing "drums" with whisks on a metal stool. That might have worked in a club setting, but it really fell flat in front of a festival crowd.
Beautiful_Arm8364@reddit
Ope. It was '99. Not '97.
DPax_23@reddit
Edgar Winter Group mid-90s. We were hired to set up the sound and run the board for an opening act and then sit around for hours in a shitty Connecticut bar while they played so loud people started leaving. Maybe 150 people to see them and by the end like 40 were left.
The 20 minute version of Frankenstein was fucking awesome though.
Had to pull over and sleep in a rest area after packing up the sound equipment and trying to drive home after they dicked around for so long after the longest most boring show ever.
AddisonDeWitt333@reddit
Wife went to Dire Straits back in the day - and she actually fell asleep. She says it was the most mid concert she’s ever been to.
heynow941@reddit
REM on the Monster tour. I felt like they jumped on the grunge bandwagon. Also a huge part of the concert was most of the new album plus songs that had not been released yet (I think they came out on their next album). I was hoping for more deep tracks from their catalog but they were looking too far forward for me. I stopped listening to their new music after that.

Metallica 1988.
One of the overhead lights fell near the guitarist and he cried and didn’t want to play and wanted to leave. A little while later the concert continued. But they never returned to Ottawa for like 10 years.

I’ve been fortunate to go to a lot of shows in my time. I think “disappointed” can mean so many different things. Low energy, bad sound, band infighting, tour fatigue, poor setlist, touring on a terrible album, and just “too old”
I feel like I’ve seen all of them, but the most disappointing is the band trying to cram a bad album down your throat (St. Anger, I’m looking at you)
