Usually economic reasons
Mrwhale33@reddit
As an economist, you’re closest to being right. Immigration is complicated but OP is genuinely not correct.
polarpolarpolar@reddit
As an economist, what is your actual job?
I know so many people with economics degrees, not one of them is doing actual “economics”, which I believe to be dictating economic policy for an institution like the Fed.
Mrwhale33@reddit
I do appreciate you asking, if you have any questions about my work/the industry, I’m happy to answer!
polarpolarpolar@reddit
I guess I wonder what economists actually contribute to the world, if they aren’t part of the decision making process.
It feels a bit to me like being a sportswriter - except for entertainment value, unless you are part of the coaching staff or employed by the franchise to inform decisions, where does the value come from?
Like the panthers aren’t asking the myriad of sports bloggers how they should line up on defense, same as the fed isn’t really asking around for advice outside of their own analysts. And I don’t think it’s entertainment value like sports.
Mrwhale33@reddit
Well economists can do that, but an economist, by definition, is a professional who studies the economy. I don’t know why you think they have to be in charge of it, do you think biologists are in charge of everyone’s human bodies? Or do they study them?
But I do work as an economic policy analyst right now for a large firm and have previously worked in economic development for both urban and rural areas.
Coakis@reddit
But that's no reason to shit on your adopted country. That's just despair/worry that your home country is in a bad way, and not accepting it.
Tylos_Of_Attica@reddit
And do what? Leave all the shitting to the locals?! I have stagnant wage complaints and anti-goverment criticisms that need to be comisserated.
StanIsHorizontal@reddit
It’s money. Why is that so complicated? Imagine you wanted to work in an industry and the only place with high paying jobs in that industry was Saudi Arabia. Are you supposed to just fall in love with every part of Saudi Arabia just because you have to be there for work?
MrBingly@reddit
If I moved to Saudi Arabia for work I would be sure to shut the fuck up about things I don't like in the country because I'm self-aware enough to know that I'm a guest.
CallidusNomine@reddit
Pick a different industry?
airfryerfuntime@reddit
No, usually they want to keep their culture, even the bad parts, while taking advantage of the benefits of western life. They think they can have both, but end up just ruining things because the two cultures aren't really compatible.
Sethleoric@reddit
And government and geopolitics you can love your home and your culture and wish you'd stay there but you're terrified a certain someone is going to bomb you one of these days or your politicians do something insane and re2rded.
T. Fucked off to another cunt myself.

Thanks for mentioning india otherwise it's pretty well known that most 3rd world Islamist countries have whiners like this.
Gobbler_of_Cock@reddit
You could've just said "Islamist countries"
noroisong@reddit
you could’ve just said “countries” to be honest
imbogey@reddit
Sweden 3rd world country?

Well no, but also yes

MonsieurVirgule@reddit

Kiwi_Doodle@reddit
yep, neutral during the cold war = 3rd World.
Ketjapanus_2@reddit
There are plenty of rich Islamist countries, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, UAE, Sweden just to name a few
random_internet_guy_@reddit
Sweden 😩
FalconRelevant@reddit
UK?
power899@reddit
You're forgetting about Europe 😉
Any-Faithlessness397@reddit
Lmao
darthicerzoso@reddit
I think that any country that has a fair number of people living abroad has people like this. I'm Portuguese and when I was in the UK I worked with this one Portuguese guy that wouldn't shut up about how Portugal is so much better, to the point that the guy that worked the most directly with him had this meltdown where he was constantly saying stuff like "if it's so much better just go back, just leave mate. What are you doing here then?"
Italian are also stereotypically known for being like this. I did find them more irritating tbh, like nothing is ever good for them. You can't have spaghetti with anything that they don't agree with, everything is their culture.
Jellylegs_19@reddit
Difference is western countries actually bomb those countries. Then open their door to the immigrants. Then start complaining about it.
As far as I know, India doesn't have any war and isn't being bombed.
Tour-Sure@reddit
On the contrary here in the UK Indians integrate way better than people from Islamist countries. Apparently that's not the case in Canada though

Indians had a good stereotype before those street food videos started going viral. What a shame.
xxwarlorddarkdoomxx@reddit
Remember when Apu was considered the offensive Indian stereotype?
RipDove@reddit
Man was a business owner, had several degrees, and often took part in the community. Maybe my memory is hazy but I also don't recall any comments in the show about him over charging. He also made efforts to know everyone in town by name.
Like what, he was a brown guy who talked funny and that was offensive?
What were people expecting in a depiction of a first generation immigrant?
drak0ni@reddit
He sold expired food, had an incredibly high number of kids, and ran a convince store. These are all stereotypes for Indian people. Just because he was a good person doesn’t mean he wasn’t a racial stereotype.
ExpertSpace@reddit
But the thing is, every single character on the simpsons was a stereotype. No matter their colour.
SOF_cosplayer@reddit
Meanwhile no one bats an eye on Cletus being low IQ, having lots of inbred kids, incestuous relationship, and living in a shack in the backwoods. Or comic book guy being the redditor stereotype to the T.
xxwarlorddarkdoomxx@reddit
I’d argue the difference is Cletus is only one very many white (or technically yellow, bite me) characters in the show, while Apu was the only prominent Indian/South Asian character
rividz@reddit
Yes, because Springfield is Anywhere, USA and Apu is an immigrant that naturalizes. The Simpsons do not take place in South Asia.
UnevenContainer@reddit
because browns cant fend for themselves, duh
Alexander_Russo@reddit
If the racial stereotype is depicted as a good person I say take the win before we give you the alternative to really cry about. Apu actually did a lot to give me a positive opinion of Indian people when I was a kid, it took learning more about real ones to sour my perspective.
The_Nude_Mocracy@reddit
It's like when everyone got offended about Speedy Gonzales on behalf of Mexicans. It's a cartoon, it's supposed to be a caricature! Next they'll get offended because Homer is American and fat
TheDevilsAdvokaat@reddit
I've actually people on reddit who said they were mexican and they were proud of speedy.
schmitzel88@reddit
That's not just reddit, this is nearly universally true. They petitioned enough that they were able to get him back on the air after some (white) execs pulled the show for being a stereotype.
calmdownmyguy@reddit
I thought speedy went of the air in like 1995. I don't think woke had anything to do with it.
schmitzel88@reddit
It was taken off the air in 1999 when cartoon network bought the rights to it. A spokesperson said it was taken off the air due to being a racial stereotype. In 2002 a Mexican advocacy group successfully petitioned to get it back on the air.
TheDevilsAdvokaat@reddit
Didn;t know this either. TIL!
TheDevilsAdvokaat@reddit
Didn't know that. TIL !
Mcc457@reddit
I'm Mexican and I love speedy, oh wait no I'm not, or am I?
I don't disagree with you, I've met Mexican people in real life that like speedy but saying you've "met people on Reddit" is INSANE
TheDevilsAdvokaat@reddit
I wouldn't say it's insane, but yeah It's certainly not a certainty.
FriedFreya@reddit
1) omg the original commenter u replied to forgot to include the word “met” to begin with, which is totally sending me lol.
2) “meeting people on the internet” (or reddit) is how i describe my gaming buddies so idk wth ur on about saying meeting ppl online is insane lol. this statements doesn’t entail we ^(or anyone? who uses the same phrasing) have face to face contact with said online individuals, if that’s the conclusion you jumped to :3
3) have a great day :D
Mcc457@reddit
that's the thing you can just lie on the Internet... I'm not talking about meeting people online like to hang out with I'm talking about trusting what people say in often very polarizing conversations. You can't verify someone is being legit over test and not on Reddit that's essentially anonymous. famous example and this is not uncommon:
FriedFreya@reddit
fair, i tend to avoid spaces that have no purpose though. meeting folks for game or textual RP is normal, connecting online is one of the only outlets the socially inept (hi) are able to actually converse with other like-minds. lie, lie all day. sure. not like i’m giving you my money or anything 😭 hell. there could be more lying tbh. i’ve heard (read, rather) kids say “im a minor” ^(mostly to drown out arguments when they’re losing/wrong 😩) and it’s like YOOO i couldn’t have ever imagined saying anything like that in the year 2013 lol. stranger danger.
in this ai era, it’s hard to know if anything is real anymore. i’m happy to say the few folk i’ve made really good friends with are really cool :> we all met through shared interests like games and anime haha. i’m sure the OC is the same way. it’s hard to hold up a huge farce for 5 years in your late teens / early 20s like we are lol. it’s nice to have a space to talk about things with people who relate to you! and that’s just not something someone like me can get in the USA deep south haha!
if it weren’t for the internet, i’d still be ignorant about Russia because all the propaganda, lol. i met my best friend (Russian) through a game called Sky, and he and i have learned that we have very similar economic situations. only his is icy-cold lmao. 1°C is a “warmer” day apparently, jeez. we call frequently and will chat for hours. my days would be just as cold and very lonely if it weren’t for him, tbh.
but yes! anyone can say anything online :3c like, i’m a one-eyed one-horned flying purple people eater, sure why not 😂
also that screenshot will never not be funny lol
sovereign666@reddit

sovereign666@reddit

FriedFreya@reddit
i’ve met gamer buddies on reddit through gaming subreddits, sorry if that wasn’t made clear :)
sovereign666@reddit
then you are an exception to most other peoples experiences on reddit.
FriedFreya@reddit
that’s fair to say as well :p
Tripleberst@reddit
Homer is privileged. Privileged people aren't allowed to complain about stereotypes because privileged people can't be discriminated against. (This is what they actually think)

I've never understood why Speedy Gonzales is considered racist.
The other characters surrounding him? Sure you could make that argument (E.g Slow Poke Gonzales), but not Speedy himself.

Its because Speedy is supposed to be an inversion of "Typical Mexicans".
But he's also just a good character so everyone likes him.

thereoncewasahat@reddit
It's a harsh wake up call when you grow up in a homogenous population supplied with with overly positive propaganda about certain groups you've never met in person; only to finally start interacting with them and realising the 'wrong' opinion was correct so along.
Millenials were particularly vulnerable to this as we didn't have ready internet access in the early days.
alitayy@reddit
Yeah but nobody was saying it’s not a stereotype. The person you’re responding to just thinks that it’s not really that offensive.
LeshyIRL@reddit
...Because it's not
alitayy@reddit
I agree
drak0ni@reddit
Nah, they edited that comment to imply that, the last line wasn’t originally there
RipDove@reddit
Are you redacted? You can see if a comment has been edited on Reddit, it's literally tagged as "* edited"
schmitzel88@reddit
Several years ago some white executives tried to pull speedy gonzales from the air because he was a stereotype. In response, tons of Mexicans petitioned and got upset because it turns out Mexican people fucking love speedy gonzales and consider him to be a positive representation, despite being a stereotype.
Everyone on the Simpsons is a stereotype of something. Apu is at least a good dude and is shown more positively than many characters on the show.
tarodar@reddit
If I recall correctly the fact he was voiced by a white man had a lot to do with it seen as racist.
RipDove@reddit
I'll give you the bit about the extreme number of kids. But I go to immigrant-owned groceries pretty often and a good number will sell expired food. I don't think that's an Indian specific stereotype so much as a stereotype of any place that isn't a huge chain.
Consistent-Throat130@reddit
Considering I've had multiple instances of the fucking Krogers selling expired stuff...
Live_Carpenter_1262@reddit
I felt the expired sausage was more of a jab at shabbily managed 7/11s than a jab at Indian people
hypexeled@reddit
is that really a stereotype though? When i was a kid all i saw was a store owner being shady to make a profit and someone who got unlucky with the multiple kids.
Ardalev@reddit
Wait, those were the stereotypes people were offended by?
I thought he got canned because of his name. Apu -> A poo.
Everything else is kinda meaningless, every other character in the show is a stereotype in one way or another.
thoughtlow@reddit
Apu is a common nickname in some regions of india
RipDove@reddit
Dikshit
BaronVonWeeb@reddit
Tbh, the expired food one isn’t even unique to Indians. My manager at work used to work at a store as a manager and he told me that the only product that has to be thrown out right as it expires is dairy, with the rest it’s still good for a week or so. For context, he is Russian.
skaliton@reddit
to be fair basically every character in the simpsons is a stereotype
cleetus is basically alabama
the police are collectively completely worthless and just sit around
willie's accent is so thick that there is an entire episode that's remembered solely for him speaking in a scene that isn't relevant to the plot at all
I can go on, but as far as stereotypes go he is probably on the better half (I mean it isn't like he runs a scam call center and routinely asks for 'abble' gift cards while trying to get every female character to 'show bob and vagene'
iz-Moff@reddit
I'm pretty sure he had no kids at the time when Simpsons were great. I don't remember it off the top of my head, but i believe he only meets his wife somewhere around season 8 or so, and as far as i'm concerned, season 9 was the last good one.
Vast-Combination4046@reddit
Had 8 kids due to fertility treatments gone awry
DeliriumRostelo@reddit
Everyone has negatives but compared to cletus homer half the time or comic book guy thats fine
Also the kid thing isnt that bad - comparatively homers got way less and hes strangling bart
CaseroRubical@reddit
there was also a joke about apu marrying a child before going to America
Dammit_Meg@reddit
He only had eight kids though because everyone was slipping his wife fertility pills. They were octuplets, it's not like he wouldn't stop having kids, they only had one batch. It just happened to be eight LOL
duva_@reddit
Had an arranged marriage with a child
ras2703@reddit

anonareyouokay@reddit
He cheated on his wife, that's the only negative story line with Apu.
bremsspuren@reddit
Apu & family make up most of the list of Springfield residents you wouldn't actually mind having as neighbours IRL.
randomstuff063@reddit
This year is an outright lie, and you know it, and it can be proven it’s a lie because of the rest of the comment section.
Fern-ando@reddit
Apu accent isn't even that thick compared to phone scammers.
Bay1Bri@reddit
It wasn't a huge point, but he was depicted as doing so.
wirelesswizard64@reddit
He wasn't overcharging, but he was occasionally dishonest about the quality of the products sold and the sanitary conditions of said items... such as blowing most of the floor lint off a dropped hot dog before putting it back on the rack, a secret kept between just himself and smashed hat.
It wasn't because of his race, Apu and the Kwik E Mart just represented sketchy convenience stores like Mr Krabs represented profit-obsessed restaurant owners (in a town full of cartoonishly flawed characters at that). There were plenty of other sketchy salesmen and business owners of all races (especially Homer) who violated code just as if not more frequently than he did.
Dammit_Meg@reddit
He 100% was over charging, see my earlier comment
Dammit_Meg@reddit
He definitely overcharged the shit out of people. There is a line in one of the earlier seasons that goes something like this. I think it was the episode where they are essentially the Beatles. But I could be wrong on that. Regardless..
Apu: it's not much, but it's good. Honest work.
Customer: excuse me, how much for this card of milk?
Apu: $12.
darthicerzoso@reddit
I never understood what was the play with those Indian communities. Like the Simpson is a show that pokes fun of everyone and anyone, no group or culture is portrayed in a positive light, if they are it's because it's funny in the context of the episode. Anything and everything is seen through a lens of sarcasm. And these people thought that the Indian family of this show must be portrayed in a positive only light, they wouldn't accept that they stopped being portrayed, like wtf.
ChimeraYawning@reddit
Why are stereotypes considered bad?
Sry not american
anonareyouokay@reddit
Because most people want to be voted as individuals and not as their attributes.
LazarusPizza@reddit
They're bad when they portray the entire group in a negative light, and present what might be an esge case as if it's the norm.
Alsimni@reddit
They aren't innately bad, just the people that take them as absolute truth about everyone in that group. Having stereotypes color your expectations of someone is fine as long as you're open-minded enough to accept that any particular individual you interact with could be an exception to any or all of them.
anonareyouokay@reddit
I think the campaign to cancel Apu was silly. Imagine if people actually campaigned for things that mattered.
NuclearLunchDectcted@reddit
I thought that was because the voice actor was white.
StanIsHorizontal@reddit
Yeah people really miss this part, the “controversy” was just one guy saying “hey it’s weird that there’s a white guy just doing a bad impression of my uncle on the most popular show on TV”

Drayenn@reddit
My biggest beef is that they wont assimilate. Theres tons of "vegetarian only" apartments which is a keyword for indians only or indian managers hiring only indians.
If i go live in another country, i wont be looking for the canadian community and live with them.. ill just try to fit in.
Dear-Carrot-6369@reddit
How many Indians in the USA have you met that don’t speak English?
Drayenn@reddit
i didnt talk about speaking english. Only that they try to live amongst thier own rather than assimilate with the rest of the country.
JupiterTVrobot@reddit
It's easy to say you'll try to fit in and not look for a Canadian community. You can do that as a tourist and pat your back for it. But that's never true in practice for long term residents.
For instance in the middle east where I am, all western "expats" live in gated communities in condos and neighborhoods filled with their own. Every ethnic group everywhere does that.
Living in a foreign country away from your comfort zone can be lonely and depressing. "Assimilating", whatever that means, often feels fake and wannabe, nor does it help much. You'll be stuck in a limbo, neither here nor there.
Even if they change their name, speak English in your accent, change their religion, everything, they still can't change their skin color. And that's enough for you to see them as perpetual outsiders.
zaplinaki@reddit
Omigod if I have to deal with this bullshit even though I'm not in Indian anymore I swear I will file civil discrimination lawsuits or something.
I've had enough of this shit in Mumbai. I cannot be arsed to deal with it outside India.
Drayenn@reddit
My understanding was that vegetarian only apartments were a codeword for indians only since you cant discriminate on race in Canada. Im surprised to hear its a thing in India too.
zaplinaki@reddit
Yea it's a huge deal back home too. Its fucked honestly.
It's mostly done by upper caste hindus or Jains who are both 'pure vegetarian'
So they don't allow people to cook meat or eggs in their property. There are entire apartment complexes and housing societies in Mumbai that are 'veg only.' Usually they house Gujarati Jains or Jains in general or upper caste Hindus like Brahmins.
These groups generally do not consume any meat or eggs throughout their whole life and consuming meat or eggs is seen as a huge sin. You'll hear the words "dharm brasht" - religion ruined(?) or faith destroyed(?) if they even accidentally eat meat.
That's why they don't let people eat meat on their property BUT I was accepting of it in India
Motherfucker if they do this to me here I will go legal on their ass.
flaspd@reddit
You mean muslims... They will want to change the country to be just like the country they fled from
EddieHeadshot@reddit
I was at a GP (medical) office in the UK and an immigrant asked if the TV screens displaying information for everyone to be changed into HER language.
As if no one else mattered an we should be displaying everything in whatever she could read. At a free service, paid by UK taxpayers no less.
heydoakickflip@reddit
You're upset that the woman wanted to be able to read medical information? Take a step back and think critically here. This woman is probably a newer immigrant to your country who is still learning your language. She is in a hospital seeking medical care, and you are upset that she is trying to recieve information about said care. Regardless of who she is or what language she speaks, her seeking MEDICAL ATTENTION, shouldn't bother you in the slightest.
For what it's worth, I've traveled internationally quite frequently, and British tourists are the biggest complainers and tantrum throwers when things aren't catered to them in English. Take that as you will.
EddieHeadshot@reddit
No shes probably not. And they do have the leaflets in their language.
She was an entitled KAREN. THESE PEOPLE ARE THE TYPE THAT DONT INTEGRATE.
anti-gerbil@reddit
Isn't that just regular karen behavior tho?
EddieHeadshot@reddit
Yes. I did call her 'Karen' aswell. But the idea that a GP surgery would have the ability to do these pre made PowerPoint slides shows in every available language or seemly one just for her was the icing on the cake.
I mean India has 122 main languages and 22 official languages to start off with. Its just batshit crazy.
She drove off in a red BMW so assume she can afford the shittest Android phone at least and use google translate if its that much of a problem.
SilliusS0ddus@reddit
that most definitely IS regular karen behaviour.
It could probably happen with European women too... except that a large part of them speaks english or as a Karen type would be embarrassed that they don't speak english well enough
IamWatchingAoT@reddit
The thing with Europe is that a large part of the population has access to good disposable income and is highly educated which are often directly linked to "good civility." A European woman as a result is unlikely to be shameless enough to make such an unhinged request unless they are uneducated or on drugs (which isn't that rare tbh)
SilliusS0ddus@reddit
There's definitely plenty of entitled annoying white ladies.
But as I said, part of them speaks english and part of them would be too embarassed to admit they don't

As an American lives abroad - it’s 100% financial and nothing more. Historically when immigrants came in they wanted not only the opportunities but also the lifestyle US offered. This worked until 2000s and particularly ended after 08 when wealth divide began to expand dramatically.
The Indians that came before accomplished a ton in US. Guys like Bose/Khosla were literally top tier even back in India, they excelled in US and appreciated what the country allowed them to accomplish. The immigrants that came after found themselves stuck working dead end jobs with min wage incomes. Hence the comparison of “it’s way better back home.”
From my limited time traveling there - India is a tough place to exist. Even when I was paying $4k/mo on an Airbnb in the coolest Mumbai neighborhood- you still cant escape the traffic, pollution, sheer amount of people and poverty. I can’t blame anyone trying to escape it. But US just doesn’t have the same opportunities it once did. Even back in 90s you could manage to upgrade your life with an average white collar job - now that’s practically impossible. Most Indians you meet are either driving uber or doctors/tech consultants (paid less than Americans).
What I foresee - US is kinda entering the endgame. Fed/economy is a bit stuck between inflation and growth. Cost of living is rising and now AI is coming for whatever it can. Then bring in the culture wars (Ray Dalio - changing world order). As US begins to slowdown, emerging markets could continue to grow and shift global capital. I’ll wager a lot of immigrants will decide to return home then.
pinkwar@reddit
Nah. India has dug themselves into a hole. Skipping whole infrastructure to go straight to conquer IT is doomed to fail. You can't just skip roads, sanitation or law and order.
hewhoreddits6@reddit
Reminds me of discussions from the mid 2010's about why India wasn't a global superpower like China was. Because China invested billions into their infrastructure!
TearOpenTheVault@reddit
I swear to God people on this subreddit are dumber than a bag of rocks if they agree with someone claiming India doesn't have roads.
pinkwar@reddit
90% of roads in India are dirt roads and the rest are not designed at all for the amount of traffic.
Stazik57@reddit
I don’t get it. Do you really think they’re living in huts and dirt roads like the dark ages out there. I work in tech and went to southern India with my team (most of their tech industry is there) and other than the trash here and there and horrid traffic, it was much much more developed than I thought it would be. I didn’t even know India had indigenous electric car brands let alone the infrastructure for them. Or nuclear power plants. Granted I had no expectations

As a Canadian, it’s rough. I want to be kind, but the TFW program is insane, we have literally brought in a bunch of those nasty street vendors you see online here. They’re massaging each others feet, clipping their toe nails, etc at a Dominos, Tim Hortons etc. I’m really trying to understand the whole feet thing? I worked in a warehouse where there was majority Indian, and some people went to Manitoba to “find other Indians”. Wrong Indian, and they were chased out. From the horses mouth, they said “we wanted to be with Indians, but they don’t want to be Indian. They’re scary”. Zero research and all flock mentality.

zenkaiba@reddit
Its not low iq ur an idiot maybe thats why u think so. These guys are groomed into a particular culture just like everyone else. If anyone is put into a different scenario after a significant period of time they probably will feel comfortable especially if they didn't want to leave. These guys are there for money and qualify for life. If tomorrow india has clean air, enough wealth to give proper education to most and decent money to live a comfortable life they would all shift back asap!
Grenyn@reddit
But it doesn't have clean air or enough wealth to improve. And if you go back to the OP, it quite literally is about Indians leaving India for better opportunities, while talking shit about the place they moved to and glazing India.
It doesn't make sense to say oh yeah but if India were actually better, then they'd move right back. That literally puts forth as the default that India is not better.
zenkaiba@reddit
Its literally not about india being better. They know India isn't better, some of them will lie tho but the fact they dont move back shows the truth. Think of it as you getting a new job that pays 10x but all your colleagues treat you worse and u have no friends. You will bitch about it and say you're miserable, but would you leave the job? Probably not especially if the old job didn't even pay enough for you to survive. This is completely a situation of people bitching more than they actually are miserable. Human beings have always functioned like this. You never had a gf who constantly bitched about how terrible her friends were but then plan every single party and hang out with those girls everytime? No one wants to lose privileges they had before but most people also know how to compare pros and cons and for most indians they are taught from birth money is everything, no matter how bad your situation is if you can get more money its the better situation. I hope this made sense.

It's like going to the U.S and expecting everyone to be like a Hollywood star, progressive thinking, glamour and shit. The American Dream. You know there were hobos and poor people, but they were in the shadows.
But now, what's being brought to the light are the methheads, the people who live like shit, the hicks and trailer park types, pedos, then times it by like eleven because literally 1/8th of all humanity lives there, the government is corrupt and incompetent, and a large portion of the population live in third world conditions.

Lol I unironically actually left Germany without finishing my degree, while leaving pretty much a very decent life there. I even avoided the usual crap of complaining that "de ghermens r cold nd unfriendly brehh", because I actually made some really amazing friends there who taught me MTG, gave me tons of books and beautiful memories, and also left friends from my own and different communities to come back Home again. They were actually really sad and shaken that I left so abruptly, and this is with the fact that I couldn't even speak german properly even after staying for nearly 4 years hahahaha. The guilt was just too much. I couldn't escape any longer. I miss grandpa a lot, I wish I could have saved him back then. Even after running away I just couldn't be happy anymore. Lol somehow someway, I really do feel like Paulie a little bit, coming back home. The airs still rancid, the sun's way too cruel, and every day I step out I lose a significant chunk of my life, if not straight up avoiding an accident. But now the guilt feels a bit less. I am still running away from something, a future that may or may not come, but I dont feel hypocritical anymore. I'll die in this shithole if it comes to it, I'll have that in common with Grandpa now atleast.
Live_Carpenter_1262@reddit
Sorry to hear that, especially the part about your grandfather. Do you still keep in touch with friends back in Germany?
floydianvergil@reddit
Thanks man 🫂. I do keep in touch with them, I somehow even seeded the idea in them to meet me sometime soon in the subcontinent hahahaha. Maybe a Nepal trip, Maybe Sri Lanka or some hill stations here in India, the temperature does make me worry for them barring the other cultural shocks aside for a potential visit. They are very dear to me, and I credit them with a lot of lessons and insights that might or might not have visited me someday sometime. It really is very easy to fall in love with people, that I realised more than anything while being there in Germany, with all things that happened the good, the meh and the not so good over all.
neonkatana@reddit
From my experiences, what I saw so far is that many immigrants are psychologically unwilling to blend in with the culture they are moved to in order to protect their identities. Also, many of them don’t do that, but we don’t hear them because there is nothing to hear about them; they just become standard people in the culture.
JupiterTVrobot@reddit
No offence, just curious. But what does blending in or assimilating even mean? Immigrants stay to themselves for comfort and familiarity in a foreign land, at least for a while. As long as they're law abiding and productive, can't they be given some leeway and time to assimilate (which will happen by itself)?
What should they even do exactly? Should they abandon their native language, their religion, their own community? Change their names, change their accent? Whatever they do they can't change their skin color or look, and unfortunately that's enough for them to be forever dismissed as outsiders.
It's a lose-lose situation for them. If they don't assimilate, they're criticized for being insular and isolationist. And if they do assimilate, they're still criticized saying they're infiltrating our culture, taking over our institutions, and thrusting/asserting themselves everywhere. How dare they not know their place? Whatever happened to the good old days?
Ultimately it boils down to numbers, and people just don't want to see too many of them everywhere. Doesn't matter how they behave, they'll get picked on and criticized either way.

If someone makes it out, they get enough braincells to critically think about the real problems in both their home country and immigrated country, because no place is perfect, and it is valid to speak out about it wherever you are.

There are two reasons:
Western nations have a higher standard of living, average wage, and better social benefits.
They do not make the mental connection that the reason their countries of origin don't have those things is because of their "superior" culture.
It really does not occur to them, especially Indians. They're in incredibly nationalistic, not only in the sense that "India > not India" but "my specific part of India > other parts of India" along their internal ethnic lines as well. Indian states are basically divided up by language, and by extension, ethnicity.
I've seen full blown arguments between a guy from Tamil Nadu and a guy from Gujarat about who's language is the root of all human language (it's neither) and why that makes them superior to the other.
As for Arabs, it's much more simple: Muslims good and right, Kuffar bad and wrong, ergo MENA countries better than secular western ones.
As for their excuses for why their countries of origin are war-torn bombed out wastelands with an average standard of living two centuries behind the rest of the world, you'll get as many reasons as people you speak with, though none of those reasons will be "the destructive nature of Islam".

Isn't the economy plausible enough explanation? The lack of living-wage paying jobs? People don't see reality in black and white, they will appreciate (and sometimes need) the better pay and the higher standards of living and still value their culture of origin and be frustrated with cultural shock. I'm not saying that I necessarily agree with them, but as far as "plausible explanations" go, that's a pretty exhaustive one.
I live in my origin country in the first world, and I'm the first to say that immigrants here must integrate, learn our language, eat our food and live like us, but I also understand that people that comes here out of necessity may not like it at all. And that's fine, maybe they will go back one day, maybe not and their children will be natives and they'll like our country better than the one of their fathers. That's what happened to many people of my own country wher they were the immigrants somewhere else.
