My brother had the 12 inch of "Dancin' With Myself", it had a longer solo/bridge from Steven Stevens. I'm glad William Broad gets in. I saw Luther Vandross live 3 times. The only artist I've ever seen who sounded better live than the studio recording. He was that powerful.
Top-Inspection-5009@reddit
Sade. ❤️
Many-Role-4271@reddit
Half of these aren’t rock n roll…
Glittering-Stuff-599@reddit
Still no Weird Al. The Rock Hall can go fuck itself.
LaximumEffort@reddit
About time for Iron Maiden.
Billy is worthy.
Oasis is way too early.
Dogrel@reddit
America didn’t get the Oasis phenomenon. Over here they had 2 or 3 songs. Over in the UK and Europe, they were on the charts almost constantly for nearly a decade, playing strings sold out shows to hundreds of thousands of people at a time.
LaximumEffort@reddit
I’ve always seen them as two John Lennon wannabes who only got the asshole part right.
n_thomas74@reddit
Oasis is great rock and roll.
Jordangander@reddit
The Rick and Roll Hall of Fame is a joke. They may as well just call it the Random Music Hall of Fame.
dreadful_cookies@reddit
Oasis, seriously?
MusicW_Visuals@reddit
Fine with that....
MattyBeatz@reddit
The regular fan vote was bugging me. But seeing Maiden and Joy division finally make it is fantastic. Now, if we can just get a valid answer as to why they don’t consider New Order a different band than JD please and thank you.
Comedywriter1@reddit
Agree, they should get in as two separate bands.
gxfrnb899@reddit
I dont know . They were same band memeber minus Ian. Just rebranded
Sioux_Hustler@reddit
Was hoping for New Edition
Environmental-Car481@reddit
They were top fan vote. Pink was 4th. I’m really bummed she didn’t make it
fortunatelyso@reddit
Very male
stain57@reddit
It's become a total fucking joke now.
fonebone819@reddit
Always was... 😞
These_System_9669@reddit
Finally Iron Maiden. So long overdue
gxfrnb899@reddit
they wont give a shit
scro-hawk@reddit
And true
These_System_9669@reddit
They shouldn’t. HOF is complete trash
Fit_Onion_7473@reddit
If I was them ,I'd show up 20 years late too
scro-hawk@reddit
Seriously overdue.
Devildog_627@reddit
Up the Irons!
NotYourScratchMonkey@reddit
I'm happy for Iron Maiden. IMO, the metal acts that should be in the RRHOF at minimum are Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Metallica, and Iron Maiden. All the rest were already there so it's good to see the IM guys (and apparently most everyone who was in the bad) get in.
HoraceBenbow@reddit
No love for Slayer?
Dogzillas_Mom@reddit
I’d throw Megadeath in there too but I couldn’t agree more.
Fishboney@reddit
Does Vatican City have a DMV?
phoenixdiceflow@reddit
Still missing The Smiths and Pet Shop Boys from this list. Especially for GenX 80’s bands that are long overdue.
hawksmarinerz@reddit
And INXS
Moonsmom181@reddit
I’m so upset that INXS didn’t make it.
Professional-Use7794@reddit
How were Phil Collins, Billy Idol & Rick Rubin not in years ago?
Kershiser22@reddit
Well, at least part of it is that they want to make sure there are popular acts to be inducted every year. If they inducted every "worthy" act 20+ years ago, there would be nobody left for a show now.
Professional-Use7794@reddit
I thought that was why they only recently started inducting people like Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton & Cher?
optimal-gold976@reddit
Also Maiden, I figured they were in years ago. I am glad to see Wu-Tang make it, definitely deserved.
invertedsaint_666@reddit
Can they just go ahead and change it the Music Hall of Fame already? I've always loved Sade and Wu Tang but Rock n Roll?
Extension-Rabbit3654@reddit
Jebus, theres someone every year
Yes, the definition they go by judges based on the "spirit of rock and roll" and what it encompasses from "all genres"
So yeah, NWA, Johnny Cash, Wu Tang ... all are welcome
Everyones badass music is Rock and Roll
edneddy69@reddit
So iron maiden will be inducted into the r and b hall of fame??
Extension-Rabbit3654@reddit
They would if RBHOF was open to all genres the same way RRHOF is
danagnyc@reddit
They finally nominated INXS this year, but didn’t vote them in. The band is more than deserving, so I hope the hall does the right thing next year.
hawksmarinerz@reddit
Yes!!
Trident_77@reddit
and Little Feat still getting screwed
edneddy69@reddit
Air supply next
phoenixdiceflow@reddit
Out of that list, Joy Division/New Order is the most long overdue. They should’ve been inducted 20 years ago.
edneddy69@reddit
Vandros really rocked out lmfao
Overall-Avocado-7673@reddit
New Edition won the fan vote for induction and didn't get in. They are better and more influential than the majority of these clowns that got in. On what planet is MC Lyte more influential to music than New Edition? Or any of them no-name artists? Wu-Tang? I love them, but they stole the entire New Edition roadmap to success. Make popular music group, then every member make solo albums, finally get back together for world tours where every member plays their solo hits too.
No1ButtMe@reddit
Joy Division —- Iron Maiden both are worthy … Fuck that New Edition bullshit rant. Yes they were an inspiration to all the boy bands.
Overall-Avocado-7673@reddit
Iron Maiden ain't nothing but noise pollution. Bunch of no rhythm having tweakers with terrible teeth. Shit old men in stupid t-shirts listened to in the 70's while smoking hash. Get the hell out of here with your nonsense. Joy Division? Who?
Mr_SunnyBones@reddit
ahamasmi@reddit
Up the Irons!
thraktor1@reddit
So, Oasis is making it, but not the Scorpions. Ok.
Mediumofmediocrity@reddit
Maybe….
thraktor1@reddit
?
Mediumofmediocrity@reddit
Reference to a main lyric in Wonderwall, a big song by Oasis.
Chance-Cockroach7345@reddit
Definitely
StateFalse6839@reddit
RnR hall of shame is more like it. WTF does sade,wu tang get a nomination when its not rock n roll ?
Chance-Cockroach7345@reddit
You live under a rock?
Extension-Rabbit3654@reddit
Its always been this way, the Museum and Award welcomes all genres
So fuck yeah Wu Tang and Johnny Cash rock
irishgator2@reddit
Especially over INXS!!
BooterTooterBravo@reddit
Maiden was well overdue.
Plaid_Chipmunk@reddit
4 Evah
Fit_Onion_7473@reddit
More like the Potpourri hall of fame
Brs76@reddit
The melting pot hall of fame
LukeMatrix007@reddit
Holy smokes. All super worthy folks. How is Phil Collins not already in the HOF?
thenewjerk@reddit
He’s been in the HoF for 16 years as a member of Genesis.
Lost_Taste_8181@reddit
Maiden should’ve been in years ago. The RRHOF is too subjective and criteria for entry too vague. It’s a lot easier with sports HOFs.
That said, it would still be cool to visit.
Green-Minimum-2401@reddit
Yay for Sade!
Jmazoso@reddit
They are so good.
Substantial_Cow7628@reddit
Why is this hall of fame called the "Rock & Roll" hall of fame, again? Have they never heard a Sade, Luther Vandross, or Wu-Tang Clan record?
Independent-Big1966@reddit
They need to change it to the music hall of fame so people like yourself quit bitching about "they aren't rock n roll!" every bleedin year 🙄
Substantial_Cow7628@reddit
I've only "bitched" about it once. In any case, your bitching about my bitching doesn't magically turn Luther Vandross into a "rock" musician.
Manopike@reddit
^This.
MetalMan1973@reddit
Wait until Anthrax get nominated for the hip hop hall of fame
IAmATree76@reddit
I mean I Am The Man does rule!
MetalMan1973@reddit
Lol I hated that and Bring the Noise
Mr_SunnyBones@reddit
...for Bring tha noise?
MetalMan1973@reddit
No. Sade, Wu Tang and Luther Vandross have nothing to do with rock and roll so why shouldn't Anthrax or Slayer get put in a hip hop hall of fame. They need to rename it the Music Hall of Fame
charitytowin@reddit
Ok, that I would agree with. Aerosmith too!
Manopike@reddit
I think it’s been well-established that it’s all of American popular music. Miles Davis is in the Hall. Should they change the name?
IAmATree76@reddit
Right. There has been r & b, blues, and pop acts going in since the very first class.
Sloanepeterson1500@reddit
Well…. Rock & Roll itself was born on the backs of Fats Domino, Chuck Berry & Little Richard. I’m not sure, by the way you’re looking at it, that they should be nominated or in???
IAmATree76@reddit
They deserve to be in.
To me it's more a spirit than a pin point style.
pghtopas@reddit
Janes Addiction should be in.
NateNMaxsRobot@reddit
🙏
WarpedCore@reddit
Joy Division/New Order is my hope. Peter Hook is legendary but more importantly, Ian deserves it.
GirlsSmellGood@reddit
will Peter Hook show up to play with the rest of the band at the induction?
WarpedCore@reddit
There is so much animosity I think it would be hard to convince him.
He called the current version a cover band.
GirlsSmellGood@reddit
https://www.reddit.com/r/Music/comments/1sle2yo/peter_hook_to_attend_joy_division_new_order_rock/
well, didnt see this coming
WarpedCore@reddit
But, will he go on stage with Bernard and Stephen and play?
That is the $64,000 question.
I would kill to hear them play New Dawn Fades.
If the guys are fans of and know him well enough, I would invite Nick Cave to sing Ian's parts. Just my opinion.
servetarider@reddit
Nah, Joy Division and New Order should be inducted separately. To me, they are totally different bands with similar membership.
WarpedCore@reddit
Your logic is not flawed. That said I still want them in for Joy Division's sake.
Every-Cook5084@reddit
My annual scream at the clouds that Boston was snubbed again. Only been 50 years!

Is Boston even a band?

New Order!!❤️❤️❤️
sportsdude77@reddit
Maiden, Idol and New Order are great picks
the_spicy_mchaggis@reddit
Good to see joy division/new order and Rick Ruben in
One year Devo should be inducted.
heldaway@reddit
How is Devo not already inducted?
ToddPundley@reddit
There should be a whole room for local acts - Devo, Pretenders, probably others I’m forgetting.
ileentotheleft@reddit
Do they often induct an individual who has died after the hall was created? It made sense to induct them early on, but surprised about Vandross.
TouchingTheMirror@reddit
OK, but who other than Baby Boomers and GenX cares, or even ever thinks about the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame?
ZootTootRiot@reddit
Hint: GenX doesn't care.
TouchingTheMirror@reddit
GenX is probably the last generation that does, to any extent. Take a look thru these comments....
Substantial_Way296@reddit
Yet no Boston, Styx, Kansas, REO Speedwagon, Motley Crue, Megadeth... C'mon man
The_Man_in_Black_19@reddit
Really, Motley Crue and Megadeth aren't in the HOF but Wutang is?
LOL, talk about losing the narrative.
gxfrnb899@reddit
it isnt really "rock" awards thing anymore or ever
The_Man_in_Black_19@reddit
Then they should have called it something else, and added Mozart and John Phillip Sousa and John Williams etc.
By their logic, Babe Ruth should be in Canton.
Overall-Avocado-7673@reddit
Wait, Speedwagon isn't in the HOF?
Substantial_Way296@reddit
Sadly no
C43CE@reddit
All of these deserve it except Oasis. Fuck them and their uninspired drivel.
Every-Cook5084@reddit
Agreed. How do they let them in yet not INXS or Boston.
JeffFerguson@reddit
I'm glad that Phil Collins got in. Only three people in history have sold both 100 million albums as a member of a group and 100 million albums as a solo artist. Two of those people are Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson, and they are (deservedly) in the Hall twice. The third person is Phil Collins.
Unlucky_Profit_776@reddit
I mean, génesis has been around since 68 ffs. Between their prog and pop they deserve props
JeffFerguson@reddit
Genesis was inducted in 2010.
mostlygroovy@reddit
I actually agree with all of these…although I pause at Luther Vandross
LastCookie3448@reddit
Luther helped countless others get there, he is due his turn.
ToddPundley@reddit
He did some of the backing vocals on Young Americans by Bowie.
Sloanepeterson1500@reddit
David Bowie thought he had one of greatest voices, no matter the genre, that he ever heard. And he was absolutely correct!
Sloanepeterson1500@reddit
This is one of the most solid years I’ve ever seen for the Rock Hall. I really hope they bring appropriate people to do the inductions though…you do get lost if they bring on Miley Cyrus to nominate & perform Iron Maiden or Joy Division. You know goddamn well she’s never in her life heard their music 😏
will23188@reddit
I give Miley Cyrus a bit of credit. She did a acoustic version of The Replacements Androgynous with Joan Jett for her backyard concert series, and has preformed numerous times with Billy Idol.
mje11even@reddit

Fritzo2162@reddit

100% lame
oasis has like 2 songs?
billy idol the same
Iron Maiden? maybe if you squint
joy/new order - get real
Sade - sure I liked this for a moment
Luther - maybe?
wu-tang c’mon now you are just being silly
really only Phil is hall of fame material but even he dropped out after 80s
brooklynbotz@reddit
Joy Division and New Order are both among the most influencial bands of all time. You can dislike them but if you just write them off with a "get real" you're showimg a lack of music knowledge.
ReadingAndThinking@reddit
nah, they are fine sure, but hall of fame? there were plenty of bands around that time that sounded exactly like them. They had a couple of hits, but their catalog takes a nose dive after those. Like many on this list.
stayzuplate@reddit
Joy Division and New Order are two different bands
Sloanepeterson1500@reddit
Every member of Joy Division, in it’s incredibly short life, was a member of New Order. Joy Division knew that they, the music that they made, would cease to exist without the devastating loss of their lead singer/songwriter, Ian Curtis. So they reformed as New Order, with a new sound, somewhat in honor of Ian but also because they had more to do. We, the fans of both bands, are beyond thrilled they’re getting in finally.
stayzuplate@reddit
Dude. I know the story.
Joy Division and New Order are two different bands.
Sloanepeterson1500@reddit
If you know the story then you’d understand why the band(s) are going in as one.
SquareTowel3931@reddit
Oasis....LMFAO
n_thomas74@reddit
Oasis is great rock and roll.
Phog_of_War@reddit
I'm in, if only to see Phil Collins and Wu-Tang on the same stage.
charitytowin@reddit
I think Phil Collins won't be there. He's a death's door.
-Granby-@reddit
The Rock Hall lost me last year when Phish didn't get it. I mean give me a break. They brought a whole genre of music back to life and were/are one of the biggest touring bands of all time.
charitytowin@reddit
The Hall of Fame is just a money grabbing self-serving business anyway, but since they're masquerading as a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame the fact that Phish is not in is beyond ridiculous.
jimb575@reddit
I’m convinced that they hold back artists in order to fill in “lean” years. Im certain they did that with Rush and KISS…
Howcanitbeeeeeeenow@reddit
WTF! The first notice I saw didn’t include Joy Division/New Order. That’s the one I appreciated most.
NFLTG_71@reddit
Who the fuck are they? I’ve never heard of them. What song are they famous for?
CommunicationNew3745@reddit
You're kidding, right?
NFLTG_71@reddit
No, not kidding when I was born I grew up listening to Black Sabbath Led Zeppelin, The Who, Rolling Stones band from the early 70s in the early 80s. I got into iron maiden. I’ve been a metal head since then.
SusannaG1@reddit
Joy Division is foundational to "post-punk"; they formed after seeing the Sex Pistols in the summer of '76. They started out as a punk band, but added influences from New Wave. Their biggest song was "Love Will Tear Us Apart" (which is not on either of their albums). Their lead singer committed suicide in 1980.
Joy Division's surviving members added a new keyboardist (Gillian Gilbert), and kept making music very successfully through the 80s (and onward) under a new name - New Order. Still a stew of post-punk and new wave, but also featuring electronica/EDM.
A great band in both of their forms. Joy Division is darker and moodier in tone, though.
Sometimesunaware@reddit
New Order - Bizarre Love Triangle, Blue Monday, Age of Consent. They formed after 3 of them were in Joy Division, the lead singer took his own life. Huge influence band, Love Will Tear Us Apart shows up on radio from time to time.
Comedywriter1@reddit
British band Joy Division put out two amazing albums before the death of their singer. Their most famous song is probably Love Will Tear Us Apart, which is not on either album.
The band reformed as New Order and had hits like Blue Monday, True Faith, etc.
If you have any interest in alternative music, you should check out the movie 24 Hour Party People, which is about those bands as well as Happy Mondays and the Manchester music scene in general.
WingZombie@reddit
Life long metal head who lives an hour from the R&R HoF.
They should just call it the "music hall of fame" or something. They lost the thread a long time ago.
So many heavy acts have been kept out. Iron Maiden has sold over 130M albums globally and is just not getting in. I think Genesis has already be inducted, and Phil does deserve to be in there as a solo artist. Billy Idol I get due to his influence with GenerationX more than anything although a young me has vivid of that "rock the cradle of love" video. Oasis I get as their influence in Europe is a lot higher than it was here in the states and they have like 100M in album sales. All the hiphop stuff I don't really get. I like hiphop, but why induct into the R&R hof unless they have a lot of cross over as some do (Beastie Boys for instance).
Anyway, I'll probably watch the induction as I usually do. I was fortunate to go the year the GnR, Beastie Boys, and RHCP all got inducted. That was pretty cool.
Devildog_627@reddit
Maiden should have been in decades ago. Ridiculous how long it took, though I’m glad for it.
C-coli85@reddit
Damn right! Up the Irons!
LynxLynx555@reddit
Heavily conflicted between Billy Idol, Iron Maiden and Joy Division.
gxfrnb899@reddit
cool about Iron Maiden and JD/NO but Billy Idol lol
Admirable_Beebe_4962@reddit

TheSkepticCyclist@reddit
The three above them are much more of a surprise.

Oasis had two great albums and sputtered out famously.
How is Blur/Gorillaz not in the fame yet, they are far more creative and influential.
UnderwhelmingAF@reddit
How the hell is Phil Collins just now getting in?
retrokezins@reddit
He's already in the R&RHOF with Genesis. This will be the second time he's inducted.

Ok, that makes sense.

JJQuantum@reddit
All of these Hall of Fame’s, whether it’s this one, sports, whatever, all try to stay relevant by electing new members every year. It waters them down. In reality there are some years when there just isn’t anyone that should get in.
Dogrel@reddit
RNRHOF doesn’t have that right now, mostly because they did that so much in past decades that there’s now a huge backlog of “how are these people not in already?!?” artists and bands. They’re at least 5-6 mega classes behind.
Dogrel@reddit
About damned time.
WildmouseX@reddit
Until Weird Al is on that list, they can go kick rocks.
GeistMD@reddit
Damn, guess they just let anyone in these days. Rock and roll has lost all its rock.
585AM@reddit
“Rock and Roll” and “Rock” are two different things. It is why things like doo wop bands from the 1950s fall under the umbrella of “rock and roll.”
Think about the kinds of retro 50s/early 60s radio stations that used to be popular.
Don’t like rock bands like Queen? There is a reason why Freddie Mercury did a cover of the Great Pretender. Rock grew out of rock and roll, just like rock and roll grew out of things like country and the blues.
sarcasticorange@reddit
I wouldn't classify Doo Wop as Rock n Roll. Like RnR, it has Rhythm and Blues roots so they are more cousins.
Regardless, Sade isn't in any way related to Rock and Roll.
_frank_tank@reddit
That is quite the spread, well done
KingPabloo@reddit
Sade and New Order - bam!
hesathomes@reddit
Why is Joy Division slashed with New Order?
Powerpoppop@reddit
I know why, but it's still stupid. Both bands were massively influential and shouldn't be lumped together.
Amazing_Factor2974@reddit
When the lead singer committed suicide ..Joy division became New Order basically.

tunaman808@reddit
Ian Curtis had epilepsy, and his prognosis was getting worse and worse. They had limited therapies back then, and he'd almost exhausted them all. Health-wise, his future was bleak.
He also felt incredibly guilty. He had no idea he'd become a rock star. He married his high school sweetheart Deborah and got a job as a social worker after high school graduation (OFF-TOPIC: here's a post with amazing photos of Curtis at the Macclesfield Job Centre Christmas party, when he briefly worked there!)
After the band took off, Curtis subsequently met Belgian music journalist Annik Honoré and most historians think he fell in love with her. Honoré always claimed their relationship was platonic, but even if it was, she understood "rock star Ian" in a way Deborah never could. It's thought he felt very guilty about it.
virtualrussel@reddit
No Dogs In Space did an excellent podcast on the history of Joy Division and dives deep into that arc.
CNote_89@reddit
They’re basically the same band, same members minus one
SusannaG1@reddit
Joy Division morphed into New Order after their lead singer committed suicide.
davidsinnergeek@reddit
Joy Division became New Order following the death of their lead singer Ian Curtis. As influential as Joy Division was to post-punk, New Order is to electronic music. It is good that the two bands be inducted as one entity.
easyPandthenutsackrs@reddit
I've been watching some Joy Division documentaries lately and good on Bernard and the others for insisting they go in as both JD and NO.
hesathomes@reddit
I loved them both, ty
DullAmbition@reddit
Can’t believe New Edition didn’t get in. They easily won the fan vote.
But as a group and their solo efforts plus Bell Biv DeVoe they are on par with The Eagles for all the hits they’ve had.
HHSquad@reddit
New Edition in and Jethro Tull not? It's really just a Pop Hall of fame.
ToddPundley@reddit
Honestly both should be in.
Remarkable_Class824@reddit

Kinda surprised a few of these weren't already in there.
bluealien78@reddit
Oasis is an interesting one here. On one hand…they’re not that good (imo, and I was always more of a Suede fan in the 90s). On the other hand, they were the tip of the BritPop spear, and that had huge cultural and political impact that time.
Kinda love this list!
naked_rider@reddit
Oasis sucks and just further demonstrates how meaningless the HOF is and has been.
CommunicationNew3745@reddit
Overrated to the 'nth degree for sure. They had their moment, but their egos - Liam's in particular - definitely outrank any talent.
bluealien78@reddit
I think “sucks” is subjective - they clearly have a lot of fans around the world that still connect with their music - but the RnRHoF hasn’t been reputable in many years imo.
ThaCommittee@reddit
Holy shit this is stacked. How many get in??? If i had 5 picks, they are...
Billy Idol
Joy Division/New Order
Sade
Luther Vandross
Wu-Tang Clan
I get that Phil and a few others are more mainstream...but those are mine. Born in 1984 and have had atleast 1 album of each of those artist....well, Luther's and Billy's were my dad's but still.
