Volkswagen of America Reports Q1 2026 Sales

- Volkswagen Q1 2026 sales decreased 16.1% YoY compared to Q1 2025
- Tiguan sales grew 55.2% YoY in Q1 and Golf R sales grew 4.7% YoY

GTI sales slump, but Golf R sales rise - odd.

Extremely popular with the upper class nowadays here in Austin Texas. If I see a Golf R I assume it’s a wealthy enthusiast that has a few Porsches or some vintage off-readers at home.

I just can't get excited about one with how it looks. I really tried because I think they're really great all around vehicles. Though I think a GTI is a better value proposition
pinezatos@reddit
The previous gen looked way better, now the car looks like it's sleeping
PurchaseStreet9991@reddit
Honestly I may be insane to say but on the street I think the GTI is more fun to driver than the R
It’s a little less controllable which is feel matches the goal of a hot hatch
AndreLeGeant88@reddit
That really isn't insane at all. Golf R has a lot of power on paper vs a GTI, but not that you'll ever need on the road. GTI is considered more fun in twisties.
ChapekElders@reddit
It’s a golf

The R has always been better with the DSG and The mk8/8.5 R is seriously dynamic and a way better vehicle than the mk7/7.5. It seems to have significantly improved the infotainment which was the only complaint of the mk8 (and even then it didnt stop that many people)
I do think loss of manual hurt the GTI though as the manual was a lot more suited to the GTI.
cilantno@reddit
Why do you think the R/GTI are “suited” to two different transmissions?
PurchaseStreet9991@reddit
Because the Golf R is a far more serious performance vehicle. It’s held back by the slower transmission
The GTI is the version for people who prioritize fun over numbers. A manual fits the car better
cilantno@reddit
Seems like a fair enough take.
I’ve owned each with an MT and don’t quite agree, but I get your thinking.
No-Necessary7135@reddit
Curious, what's your experience?
cilantno@reddit
I think the R is as "serious" as the person driving it wants to be. The lack of red striping on the strong doesn't make it more of a grown-up's car. It's not held back by any transmission.
The DSG is the better transmission for both because it is a better transmission. It's a great auto, the MT (same in both) is a meh MT.
That being said, I think the transmission choice is fully in the hands of the owner and I don't think either drives better than the other because of the transmission.
The GTI is the version for people who either want specifically want FWD or can't afford the R. It's not "fun over numbers."
Astramael@reddit
I’m pretty sure that Golf R sales have been supply constrained for some time. So this number should mostly map with how many VW produces.

A wild moose in the Yukon has a better pulse on the American car market than the product planners at VW North America
vw18t@reddit
I don’t see VW making BOF trucks or full sized/mid sized trucks specifically for the North American market anytime soon.
tman2damax11@reddit
They don't need to, they just need more compelling CUVs. The Taos looks dated and the new gen Tiguan is a reliability nightmare.
Anchor_Aways@reddit
Well yea, GMC is a more popular car brand than VW
FalloutRip@reddit
Give us the Tiguan R, you cowards.
jca_ftw@reddit
Shoot I would be happy with a new VW Alltrack with the GTI engine.
The piece of cr@p engine they put in there is inexcusable. I like mine with the 6 speed but it’s just so gutless.
turbo-toots@reddit
You have plenty of tuning options. I was running an APR stage 1 in mine and it made a world of difference. If that's not enough, put an IS20 in there and call it a day. My problem with the Alltrack wasn't the engine. It was the suspension steering. It felt like an SUV.
PurchaseStreet9991@reddit
Not everyone wants to throw away their 4 year powertrain warranty
turbo-toots@reddit
The person I responded to is in the US. They stopped making the Alltrack in the US 7 years ago, so that's not a problem.
V8-Turbo-Hybrid@reddit
Would glad more if Golf R wagon is available in North America.
PurchaseStreet9991@reddit
Could we get that in English?
leTrull@reddit
Take this modified Tayron L with a torque converter (the slowest I've ever seen) instead.
xt1nct@reddit
At least the turbo gets us closer but needs dsg.
