I don't like the ghost ring sights, mag capacity sucks, and obviously going to be hard to hold........Somebody stop me from buying this thing
DesertStag@reddit
no. stop. dont
NeverBuyingVWAgain@reddit
Really it's the $500 Beretta 92xi. I bought an Italian 92fs last year for 600 so I don't really need it......
DesertStag@reddit
hahaha, yes somehow that clip is burned into my brain. "I neeeeeeed itttt!"
thanks for that memory
Junction91NW@reddit
They aren’t durable and their reliability goes to shit after a few thousand rounds. They’re for retarded preppers who aren’t smart enough to buy a 10/22 and call it a day.
And I guess they fuckin’ float, but also not really, but maybe it will
GiveMeSumChonChon@reddit
There’s really no reason to pick this over a polymer 10/22
theoriginalharbinger@reddit
Literally the one reason is "I need to go kayaking or canoieing with my rifle" or "I need to toss a rifle in my Cessna," which is a use case that applies to maybe a vanful of people in Wyoming or Montana or Alaska.
For everybody else, breakdown 10/22 or folding stock 10/22. If you want it to float, duct tape some pool noodles to it.

Tariffs are out of control and Big Pool Noodle is just screwing the consumer. There’s probably grounds for an anti-trust on pool noodle markets.
1rubyglass@reddit
Better hope in wyoming/montana/Alaska you find one of these in .308 or something. Going to get ate.
Appropriate_Till6129@reddit
Biggest grizzly ever taken down in California was taken down with a well placed 22 short round.
1rubyglass@reddit
A quick Google search shows that to be false, not that it matters at all.
bubbathedesigner@reddit
Right you are. Maybe it was about a Canadian event?
1rubyglass@reddit
I'm definitely not saying it's impossible. Aside from a perfect shot mixed with a lot of luck, the bear will insert that thing into your anus.
vadillovzopeshilov@reddit
Why would a bear do all that?

The "Gary Paulsen - Hatchet" cosplay crowd
jake55555@reddit
I always wanted one since reading hatchet as a kid. I ended up snagging the gymratzguns? deal around 2019 that is still talked about on here sometimes. Stainless barrel takedown 10/22 and I can store a 100rd brick in the stock and knife, lighter, and line in the grip. I love that thing.
KuromanKuro@reddit
The pool noodle hand guard mod saves so much weight it’s worth sacrificing Mlok and pic slots on my ar.
bubbathedesigner@reddit
Weren't the originals well-made?
Lumpy-Fill@reddit
Hey there are two reasons. They are neat. Nothing wrong with getting a gun simply because its cool.
throwawayainteasy@reddit
Honestly that's probably like 90% of gun purchases, especially the deals on here.
Not me, though. I 100% need to have an MP5 clone for completely legit reasons that a handgun or any other PCC just won't work for. Totally. It's just a bonus that they're super neat.
And_now_young_jedi@reddit
"Retarded" is an insensitive way of referring to fans of "Hatchet" by Gary Paulsen.
NeverBuyingVWAgain@reddit
Forgot that part. I was like 12 when we read it and I remember he dove in the lake to retrieve stuff from the plane and the dead pilot was in there but thats about it. That's funny 🤣
Junction91NW@reddit
This got a genuine belly laugh out of me lmao
Not_an_alt_69_420@reddit
Hell, they aren't even reliable out of the box.
Me, my old man, and a few buddies have one because we're all morons. All of them jam unless they're fed one specific brand, grain and type of 22LR. None of them work with the same specific round. That kind of defeats the point of a survival rifle.
Lumpy-Fill@reddit
They are completely impractical, can be unreliable, and a 10/22 is better in nearly every single way possible. But they a 100× cooler than the 10/22 and are neat that is why I love mine.
NeverBuyingVWAgain@reddit
I only like how compact pretty much. My stepfather had one I shot as a teen maybe twice. I just think the concept is kinda cool I guess. He says he only paid $40 in the 80s for it.......I mean most of his purchases are like that.
ohyeahbonertime@reddit
These are not worth your time or the $250.
walthersson@reddit
If collapsibility is your thing get a Ruger PC Carbine, they shoot 9 ridiculously precise with the built in irons and collapse down real nicely
NeverBuyingVWAgain@reddit
Think about the pc charger everyday the Kuna stays over $900ish after the FRT released for it
I have a SR9 with 5k through it that was great besides trigger. I have an LCP experience though that left a bad taste after 8 mags wouldn't seat without sanding down or buying after market baseplates and the 2 7rnds they gave me as compensation wouldn't seat without an insane amount of force.
The CS woman there freaking sucked. She was the worst and the low volume 90yo woman who didn't want to fax the poor machining on my revolvers forcing cone.
Over half of my Rugers have had a QC issue. Now they want you to pay $70 shipping if you don't address the problem with the first 2 years. Idk who has worse CS, Ruger or PSA. After 20 years of hearing how great Rugers CS was.....my ass dude. Almost sold my SP101 out of spite since they wanted me to pay for their defect
Junction91NW@reddit
My guy, what does this have to do with the price of tea in china
NeverBuyingVWAgain@reddit
Guy said Ruger was a good choice and I have my experiences with them.
bubbathedesigner@reddit
"The nnew VW Ruger, now on sale at PSA."
NeverBuyingVWAgain@reddit
My nightmare, you know that shits BLEM like my .22 Charger that came from factory with a chipped muzzle crown and stock (wife bought it for me)
SnarlingLittleSnail@reddit
I love mine, with a Haga Defense pistol grip and then whatever stock you want it is a very fun gun. I have built mine into many configurations, right now I have a Lage folding stock on mine, but at one point I had a collapsing stock and I recreated a modern Israeli AR7. Very fun, versatile, and underrated gun.
NeverBuyingVWAgain@reddit
Just a little too expensive all together for me but that is pretty bad ass. I like it. I wonder if you could put like 1ft of hot water pipe insulation around the barrel to hit your hand better. Some kind of forend
SnarlingLittleSnail@reddit
AR7 parts sells shrouds, https://www.ar-7.com/AR7-Shroud-Vented.html. At one point I 3d printed a foregrip that slid and locked in place with the barrel, i stopped using it because it made it less compact but worked pretty well
Squiggs5@reddit
Same. Haga Defense stock adapter with a pistol grip, a stock, and a rail on top. I picked up a Tommy Enterprises mag coupler and its an absolute blast at the range. Haven't had any problems. My 10/22 is the practical one, this one is the fun one.
Mysterious_Cow_2100@reddit
My dad bought one and I thought it would be cool but it’s just a novelty item, unless you’re using it for marine survival. I don’t enjoy shooting it that much.
NeverBuyingVWAgain@reddit
Yea I have a comment kinda similar. Step-dad has one he bought prob 40 years ago. I've tried it, don't really like it but different is always cool. If they weren't so mass produced, they'd be a collectors peice probably
Squeeze_Toy2004@reddit
I bought one because I thought the concept was cool. 🤷🏼♂️
My "take it everywhere" .22 is a TX22 SBR in a chassis.
NeverBuyingVWAgain@reddit
Damn, yea, a TX22 and Kuna deal are my chases for this year. Guessing you're FRT'd up?
I know I probably missed the boat but I had no money for while and just started collecting again
Got a few great deals last year
Squeeze_Toy2004@reddit
Nah, no FRT. I'm in Florida 80% of the time, and risking my professional license isn't worth the brrrrrrrrt when I already own a full auto 10/22.
GoldfishDude@reddit
They are a hoot when they work. It's honestly not too bad to shoot (the stock is chonky).
If you just want something stupid to bring to the range, buy it

sweet_pandorax@reddit
I bought one because I convinced myself it was a good survival gun and I could stick it in my backpack for hiking. I would rather have almost anything else than this with me. (S&W FPC 9mm is what I ended up going with, 10mm for Bear country) For all the other previously listed reasons it is bad, plus you can find much better guns for absolutely every scenario except the floating thing, so just tie a floatie to a 10/22 takedown and be happier.
Devaney1984@reddit
Same... I bought this 6+ years ago when it was <$200 at Cabela's...I've shot probably 10 rounds through it and never really looked at it again. Maybe some day I'll actually take it hiking.

_thefutureisdead_@reddit
I’ve heard these are known to be the shittiest option for survival rifles.
NeverBuyingVWAgain@reddit
It is ancient. From 1959 so that makes sense
_thefutureisdead_@reddit
It’s also 2026 - they’ve had nearly 70 years to make them better.
Sbeast86@reddit
These are real cool gimmick rifles, but really suck at pretty much everything, especially if you shoot southpaw. It's better than nothing, and mostly waterproof if you're into that kinda thing. I prefer my 1022 takedown though
Package_Objective@reddit
I gotta tell you bois, I picked up a keltec sun 2000 gen 3 (9mm glock mags) and I think it makes the PERFECT survival rifle, folds in half to a size only a little bigger than a carton of eggs at only 16 inches long. About 500 ft lbs of energy out of 9mm with a 16 inch barrel. Would absolutely take a deer or a threat with it in a survival situation. Picked it up for like 340 bucks. Got a red dot and Harbor freight weapon light on it, magpul angled grip, mlock grip covers. It's Peak poverty blaster. Been perfectly reliable, trigger is great in the gen three and plenty accurate. 21-27 round pmags are my go to.
Wunktacular@reddit
For the uninformed gentleman.
These are really cool for their history, first designed as a last ditch emergency survival, hunting, and self defense weapon for US airmen.
They were designed to be carried with a very small amount of ammunition, and were intended to be fired very sparingly in training, followed by use only in rare emergency scenarios.
And although the design has been improved over the decades and for civilian sale, these are not built to last.
It's an unfortunate truth. This is a last ditch weapon built as light as possible for emergency use. It's not impressively accurate or reliable, and it's certainly not durable.
For militaria or collecting? Sure.
As a practical firearm or your only .22? There are better options in this price range.
shreddedsharpcheddar@reddit
if you have never had one of these before, they shoot themselves to death within a couple thousand rounds.
BerniceFighter@reddit
How so?
BiggyIrons@reddit
It’s $250 so that might have something to do it with
ultramarioihaz@reddit
They’re also incredibly uncomfortable to shoot and manipulate. Trigger is ass.
It’s a neat collectible but it’s not something that serves any more purpose than that. It’s not a range toy and it’s not SHFT or survival anything, despite the name. Would not trust my life on an AR7.
They float ¯\_(ツ)_\/¯
External-Bar-1324@reddit
my experiences as well. Henry ones will at least work for a couple bricks before they begin to jam up, parts break, mags get funky, gun begins to beat itself to death (i.e. warp, metal sheering, pinning). Theu eventually become unfixable where buying a new one is cheaper. Henry ones will give you some use since they fixed some but not all issues, the other repros (i.e. charter arms) won't even last one brick.
Even the good Henry ones will have less bad issues (i.e. the plastic front sight will eventually walk off unless you glue it). They are made like a 3d printed 22lr, it will work but has a life span that is a fraction of other 22s. Also the mags suck and are pricey for being so poorly made.
Henry will warranty them but they wager most folks won't shoot alot through them (2-5k+ rounds).
realityflicks@reddit
This has not been my experience at all, but I still would have preferred a 10/22 for any reason that made any sense.
shreddedsharpcheddar@reddit
maybe you got a good one lol, but yeah for $250 10/22 is way better
1rubyglass@reddit
No shit? Why?
shreddedsharpcheddar@reddit
theyre just designed to be as cheap and as lightweight as possible. theyre made for pilots to assemble them once, shoot like 100 rounds tops, and then maybe turned back in for service. my stepdad had a henry production one years ago that we would take out every now and then. i cant remember what happened but it broke after like 500 rounds
1rubyglass@reddit
Damn. Ive always thought these were cool and I was considering buying one for this price. Thanks for the tip off!
BrokenSVT@reddit
All the reasons stated above, with an additional: Walmart sells these for the same price, all day long.
AlchemicalToad@reddit
Had one of these 25 years ago, thought it was cool as hell… Until I shot it. Promptly sold it off and never looked back.
Just get a 10/22.
AkimboSwagg@reddit
Do they make a red right hand version, I just think it would pair well with my dusty black coat.
Battle_Intense@reddit
1/4" longer receiver and therefore 1/4" longer feed ramp would have done wonders for this design. The feed ramp is just way too steep and number one reason these things have the reliability reputation that they do.
Shame Marlin no longer makes the papoose. Don't think I have ever seen the last version made in person, Marlin 70PSS. I guess a 10/22 take down is close enough. Put it in a watertight case that floats if that floats your boat.
Or if you are really serious about survival guns, get a 20ga pump. Depending on ammo, you can hunt pretty everything in North America if you are desperate enough.
PresidentStone@reddit
Honestly, I enjoy mine.
Better options out there like the 10/22
But I still take this out to the range regularly. I like putting it together. I have about 1500 rounds through it. Sucks to hear about them breaking easily. Didn't really research it when I bought it. Just saw it for cheap and like the idea of it.
Major_Hunter3743@reddit
