If you've got nieces/nephews or neighborhood kids that need a role model or someone to take under their wing and offer guidance, it helps them tremendously, ESPECIALLY if you have the patience to teach them useful skills.

When my kids were in that 10-18 age, I heard SO many times out in the garage while fixing a bike, or the go kart, and as the got old enough their vehicles "we learn more from hanging out with you for an hour than we learn all week in school."
That's really what cemented my position among my kids and their friends, is that I was a fountain of knowledge, and willing to teach them.

No joke I 50M have around 18 "bonus kids" above and beyond our 3 kids and their spouses, so there's a solid 2 dozen young adults and young kids that I've done just that with.

They're all connected to me through friends and family, who obviously know that I've always been amazing with kids, so there's never been any issue with any of the parents.

I say that because people can be a bit weird about a guy hanging out with kids, it's unfortunate as hell, but it does happen.

When helping my bonus kids, it all depends on them, some of them all they need is reassurance that I'm there for them if the need arises, for a few of them I'm their father figure, and they routinely seek my advice, and the younger kids, like tha I'm fun loving, and I engage with them, and I treat them like the small humans they are, and not like litte kids.
In fact the bonus kid that we took in for several month when he was 9, is now 24 with a 3yr old son of his own, whom he has full custody of, and even though he's now in routine contact with both of his parents, I was the very first person he told, and immediately started asking me for parenting advice, because he says that I'm the parent he always wanted, but never truly had, so he's going to be that parent for his son.
