Is a ryzen 5 5500 a reasonable upgrade path from the i7 7700? I have a b450 mobo and a 16gb 3200 kit

Basically I am moving from my ancient i7 to AM4 and is wondering if the 5500 is a reasonable path forward
Viking2151@reddit
The 5500 is slightly faster, may not be worth it, but it does give you an upgrade path, more options, I'd say it would be worth getting at least a 5600x over the 5500 if you can stretch the budget a little bit more.

I would not get a 5500 better to wait a bit longer and save up for a 5600x

Don't bother. The 5500 consistently goes on sale for 60 to 80 while the 5600/5600X are double or more. You're not getting double the performance. The 5500 is an extremely good budget CPU.
Serious-Map-1230@reddit
The 5500 is a repurposed laptop chip with half the L3 cache compared to the 5600. It's really a bit of a shitty cpu for gaming.
5600(x) is the way to go on am4
I_Love_Cape_Horn@reddit
This is straight up fucking misinformation. The 5500 is an extremely good budget gaming CPU. It consistently goes on sale between 60 to 80, even less used. While the 5600 (not even the X version) is double or more for only AT BEST 30% more performance. If you're on a serious budget, the 5500 is incredible. You're not getting double the performance by paying double or more.

sadly my budget is sub 100$ but is the 5500 at least faster than the i7 7700?
VoraciousGorak@reddit
Significantly. It's between a Ryzen 5 3600 (which gave 11th-gen a run for its money) and a Ryzen 5 5600 (which is similar to an i5-12400).
Well, keep in mind you'll need a new motherboard for a new CPU, if you've not factored that into your budget.

i decided on a 5500 wont be a huge upgrade but should have better at least % lows

yep got a b450 already! with a ram kit and psu/case
ExpertParsnip8875@reddit
making a similar upgrade here (from i7-8700). went with an aliexpress 5600 for 138(CAD). look around on reddit you can find seller info and coupons usually

It’s a good upgrade but seriously try to stretch your budget for a 5600 it is a better CPU.
BrandonXYX@reddit (OP)
I am going to go for the 5600 its only 70$ more
Serious-Map-1230@reddit
I bought a 5600x myself a few months ago for 75 euro secomd hand, option worth considering
SatisfactionKlutzy18@reddit
You could get the 5600 tray for 120$ on Newegg if you can stretch your budget just a bit more.
Yes the 5500 would be a great upgrade from a 7700k, but spending just 40$ more here would double your L3 cache and give you a good chunk more of gaming headroom.
BrandonXYX@reddit (OP)
thanks im pairing it with a 3060 12gb should perform a little better at 1080p
jhaluska@reddit
It's faster, but it's not going to be a massive difference.
Accomplished_Emu_658@reddit
No. Save money if budget is small. Its same clock speeds but 2 more cores which isn’t massive in most games. Save until you can get something more substantial.
Atopos2025@reddit
To answer your exact question, yes it is a reasonable upgrade path because then you're at least on a current platform. But it wouldn't be worth the cost because you probably wouldn't notice much of a difference between them.
Big-Salamander-2158@reddit
Where do you get that b450 board and is it updated to support zen3?
But it should be a little faster, especially in cpu limited games due to the extra cores. But it won’t be a huge jump.
BrandonXYX@reddit (OP)
got it on amazon a couple years back with a 4500 bundle sold the 4500 but looking to add something to it
Naerven@reddit
Sort of. For gaming you shouldn't notice much difference, but for productivity the extra cores are nice.
