I’ve been in trucking school for about a month and a half now. I failed the backing part of the test twice, and it’s been one week + since I last tried. I want to get back out there and practice, but the owner told me I can't practice backing until two days before my next test.

My schooling took 3 weeks, we practiced 5 days a week.
Maybe the owner feels cheated and wants to be a dick about it. This is not normal.

in those 5 days how many hours of practice did you do per day?
bizzywhipped@reddit
Only 4

? Don’t see a reason why you can’t practice. They just might not have time in their schedule

idk man they are extremely strict i asked let me do atleast 1-2 city drive before i go to test now but they are like your fine with 1 when i haven’t drove more then a week

Idk that just sounds real weird to me. When I was in CDL school I failed 2x backing(one time didn’t really count since the state officer didn’t set up the backing course correctly. Resulting in everyone “failing.” We got another chance later that week after our company complained, we all passed). But Literally the next day after both fails I was doing intense backing practice and longer on the road times. The school I was at was really helpful and wanted to get me my license.

Same for me. I never failed but during practice I was consistently the worse so near the end of the day, the instructor let me practice the most. The other students were cool with it and even helped me during practice.

fuck man i am stuck with these retards now i m just waiting till i just pass this shit but i always wanna constantly practice so i can get the rhythm in but idk what they are thinking
waveyvibez22@reddit
Man I’m sorry, sounds real rough.

I was so happy to get more practice. Sometimes it’s nice to just step away and relax. It’s a big career change and risk to take getting your cdl. So there’s a lot of pressure. Maybe that’s what these instructors are trying to do.

yea bro i am not sure i might assume they are facing financial troubles or something idk bec they are listed cheaper then other schools and but its been going in 2nd week since i failed my test i went last week 2 or 3 days to practice backing told him let me do a city drive he was like no ### (boss brother) told me no city drive and only city drive before test but i am like ok let me just practice backing now i went in early in the morning so i can get some time backing now he is like ### said you cant back till couple days before test i am like wtf bro i drove here today for nothing?

Who’s truck is it? Is the truck being used by other students? Is unlimited access to the schools trucks part of the program?
WorldIsYours02@reddit (OP)
no it’s not enough trucks problem rn they prob have like less than 5 or 6 active ppl working on cdl in school plus no trainer will stick around for a hour you just go practice on your own they are not interested in teaching plus i learned backing from older students
Tiatake@reddit
Maybe they don’t have enough trucks to let you practice while another group is using them? I’d go straight to the top and ask because they shouldn’t be setting you up for failure. There’s been many times I’ve stayed after classes to let students practice backing. Maybe a trainer can hang back for an hour or so. I will say though, if you’re having a really hard time, you CAN overdo it. If you backup terribly and quit, it can ‘bake’ that bad backup in your brain and you’ll repeat it the next time. Always end on a good note no matter how bad you want to keep doing it ‘right’ so your brain saves that interaction.

I suck at backing. Most people suck at backing.

I'm in a similar situation, I am training to drive standard instead of automatic but am not getting enough time to practice and the guy who does the training is only here in the morning and has 5 or 6 of us to get through.
WorldIsYours02@reddit (OP)
i feel you man i thought reading google reviews this was the perfect school after weak into it i am like wtf did i get myself into the guy that teaches is overworked and is barely interested in teaching the guy that owns part of the school rarely comes on time most of the shit i learned here are people that were here weeks before me like backing outcab the instructor is too busy doing city drives and then your stuck learning from someone else i come to find out most of these schools are outright bullshit they don’t give a shit they only care for you to pass your exam and that’s it you could be not be trained properly they don’t care if you pass your exam

With diesel prices soaring, I bet they might not have enough in the fuel budget for any extra training. As expensive as Driving school is, most schools operate on a very tight budget. My advice may seem dumb, but it is how I used to train new drivers right out of school when they got into my truck. Go and get you a remote controlled semi-truck toy. If you look around online, you can find them for under 50 bucks. Set yourself up an obstacle course and practice backing it up. The knowledge of how the truck moves in reverse and being able to see a birds eye view of it will transfer into a "picture in your mind" that will greatly help you to learn when you are behind the wheel. The best part is you can practice with the toy as much as you want with little to no cost involved and no chance of actually hurting anything. I trained a lot of new drivers in the real world after school. Most new drivers have nearly zero practical experience. School just gets you a head start and a legal way to get your CDL. The learning really starts day one with a truck hauling loads into and out of new places. Have faith in yourself. I have a suspicion that if you are wanting extra practice now, you are going to be just fine out in the real world. -Jeremy
