Esd mat smells unbearably

Is it normal for those ESD mats to stink heavily like rubber?
I habe ordered one which arrived today. I wanted to plug it in and wanted to begin working on my PC but I literally can't bear the smell and had to leave my room. It smells like rubber and plastic.
After leaving the room and coming back to the room where the ESD mat is placed on the table I enter a very strong wall of rubber-plastic smell.

Wonder if could take outside, wash with vinegar/water and dish soap. Then let it dry and air out a bit.

Nah, it’s outgassing, going to smell for a while. Took about a month for my bed mat in my truck.

Leave it outside or in a well ventilated place for a while.

It will go away but not quickly. That is the VOC's outgassing coming off the mat. Same as when you get a new car and it smell like that new car smell.

Idk in 30+ years I've never bothered to use one. I will say that yes rubber often smells bad.
