Sounds like his boss is one of those power tripping assholes. I'd think this could have been resolved with some friendly conversation rather than firing the guy. Looks like he was trying to take some initiative and over stepped his authority. I'd bet this was entirely due to very poor communication by his boss on outlining his role and he just got thrown under the bus due to his manager's incompetence.

You can see from her Facebook page she isn't fit for Public office. My guess is she was motivated by racism and misandry.

His boss's response definitely makes it seem that is the case: "She previously said his actions were embarrassing to the department and caused additional work for city officials "who tried to prevent the story from running.""
StormForeign@reddit
Have a look at her bio "Director of Convention and Event Services Rosa Fleming" and you can tell what the embarrassment is.

Oh my god. I know her. Without doxxing myself, I grew up with one of her sons in HS.
She's power trippy and rude and very high and mighty. Don't know anything else about her professional reputation except that I knew she worked for the city, but this is so in line with what I remember from Ms. Fleming growing up. Granted last I saw her was a decade ago, but man.

His position no longer reports to this boss either, the city changed who oversees this office after this issue.

She’s the typical local government type, lots of degrees and certifications and they’re all worthless. Lots of “experience” but it’s all bullshit government work and her entire career has been on the taxpayers’ tit.

Hey now, some of us actually take pride in our work and want it to work better.
I conferred briefly with Grant on something at work, seemed like a smart guy who wanted to improve nightlife and its relationship with the city. Can’t speak to his management chain or anything… there is generally a policy of getting things cleared with management and comms, but I’ve seen people retained after internal review for wayyyy worse lol

100%. This is government bureaucrat speak for "I got caught in a lie but I'm punishing you for it."

I can honestly say I have no idea what this headline means.
MagicWishMonkey@reddit
What a terrible headline...
Edward "Eddie" Grant spent three months on paid administrative leave before his firing just before Christmas, the records showed. Written statements and the resulting HR report do not cite any concerns with the content of two television interviews Grant conducted, nor two press releases he sent in coordination with the city's media relations department
The headline makes it sound like he took time off to go do a media circuit or something, lol
False-Pack7626@reddit
man that headline is so misleading like wtf smh for real
SpencerVerde@reddit
I work in comms/pr and this is big no-no. Most companies have a very strict media policy that everyone must adhere to, and not speaking to the press and/or giving interviews is a main rule. Maybe he thought it was approved, since he said he worked with the comms department, but that would be a big infraction (and fir offense) at most organizations.
Reluctantziti@reddit
Rosa is super controlling and Tolbert is super media shy so none of this is surprising. I feel really bad for the guy. And additional context for those interested: the old director of communications, an incredible pro, was finally pushed out of the City in May 2025. I could say a lot about why but basically if you say no to city council members too many times because they ask you and your department to constantly commit ethics violations, they don’t like you very much. But since she was gone at this point something tells me they just had no one with good experience at media relations to help him, specifically in convention services because the comms person there was notoriously not good at her job, and he took some initiative he shouldn’t have. Classic story of not being given proper resources and somehow YOU have done something wrong. Also very common in Tolbert’s City Hall.
TaylorFarmsSaladKit@reddit
Rosa Fleming sounds like the kind of power tripping loser that ends up in local politics.
tabrizzi@reddit
At a minimum, a journalist should be able to write an headline that makes sense.
