Interests changing as you get older?

I'm 52 and lived in Florida for most of my life. is it normal to completely change interests this late? I've always been into motorcycles but now it just doesn't do it for me. for decades I looked like the stereotypical biker and now I'm unintentionally dressing more "surfer". I'm wearing actual colors than your standard black t shirt. I'm having more fun on a overgrown bmx than a harley or my triumph. I'm listening to more new wave than thrash metal. maybe I'm just regressing back to when I was 10? My wife said something about it last night and I'm kinda freaked out about it.
lando-hockey@reddit
It’s not only normal, it’s healthy. These things ebb and flow. I have woken up and can’t get Led Zeppelin songs out of my head lately. Got burnt out on them in the early 90’s. Now it’s like I can’t believe how I ignored them.
My dad is 79. At 70 he started just taking random bike rides after fishing alone for 4-5 hours in the morning at our cabin in Wisconsin. Said it’s just like being a little boy again.
Buzz_Osborne@reddit
Can’t listen to punk and metal like I used to. Totally into outlaw country and bluegrass now.
gotamangina@reddit
Even Mike Patton is on this path.
JuJu_Wirehead@reddit
I regressed back to my teenage years as far as clothing, I even bought a skateboard before I realized my knees are too fucked to skate anymore. Coworker is trying to convince me to go longboarding.
HistoricalFuture6389@reddit
Carve and smile. Im 54 and ride around on my boards. I cant ollie a curb now, but Ill slappy it all day.
hashalanche@reddit
Your interests, thought patterns, behaviors, views should change as you age. It’s growth, it’s good, and it’s completely f’n normal…..unless your fam / significants aren’t growing too….then it’s up to you to decide on how to proceed.
Fair-Wishbone-1190@reddit
I'm 53 now and I realized I don't care what people think of me or how I dress. I'll go to Walmart in sweatpants and a t-shirt and not even care what I look like or what people think. Before I would never leave the house unless I was freshly showered, hair all styled and looking good, but not anymore, I could 2 shits what people think.
IHadTacosYesterday@reddit
One thing that is weird for me is that I give almost zero fucks about watching movies or TV shows. The only way I will watch one, is if it seems right up my alley (like Sci-Fi or something).
I still play video games every so often, but I can only play for about 20 or so minutes and then get bored of it.
JuJu_Wirehead@reddit
I can't watch TV or movies anymore. I used to do nothing but watch TV or movies when I was at home. I don't know if the quality is just bad now, or the acting sucks, or if I just don't want to waste anymore of my life watching the idiot box anymore. I've also kind of gotten bored of video games. Probably because I've been playing the same four or five games since the Pandemic.
IHadTacosYesterday@reddit
For me, when it comes to the TV and movies, I just seem to be less interested in non-fiction. Like, I don't really care about made up stories anymore. I'm more interested in watching something that's going on now, and somewhat real, or can be real. Like, I watch a lot of YouTube, and I will watch short podcasts and longer podcasts about topics that I'm interested in, but the topics are about real things. Or like conspiracy theories that might be real (aliens, UFO's).
The only movie that I'm slightly excited about is the new Steven Spielberg movie about Aliens. Disclosure Day or something like that. Honestly, the previews seem kinda lame, but I'm really into the aliens/ufo topic and I normally like Steven Spielberg's movies. Last Spielberg movie I saw was Ready Player One, and I thought that movie was really good up until the last 30 minutes or so. Thought the last 30 minutes was goofy/corny.
Mededitor@reddit
Generational theory says that what you remember as a child is what you’ll see in your old age. So far, this seems to be the case.
As you become old and enfeebled, you will see free sex, unlimited drugs, great music. And you’ll be so old you won’t get a taste of it. Gen X: always too late for the party. Reagan fucked us all so hard.
Curious_Instance_971@reddit
When my dad retired he got all sorts of new hobbies. It’s great to learn new things and meet new people too.

I’m 58 and just recently got into restoring vintage solid state audio gear. About a grand invested in gear and such but have fixed up and saved a few units that might have ended up in the garbage or recycling. Wife is concerned about running out of space for the units I’ve bought to flip.

My boyfriend just bought a Spyder trike. He’s dropped the Harley and almost dropped the Gold Wing so he decided a trike is safer. He’s happy with his new toy! He was really regretting having to give up the bikes. He’s 72 now.

I'm not as interested in chasing women for sex these days. Maybe I should exercise.
Iko87iko@reddit
Sex is exercise
formercotsachick@reddit
I was never an outdoorsy person at all, but a few years ago I fell in love with paddling and we got our own boards this year. There's nothing I love more than spending the day on the water, soaking up the sun, checking out nature, and getting exercise that feels incredibly low effort compared to working out.
I also discovered at the age of 50 after a lifetime never watching sports that I really like NBA basketball. We attend a home game a few times a year now.
I always tell people I have no idea what my final form will materialize as. I just go with the flow. I'm always open to new experiences, and am thrilled when one of them sticks.
worstpartyever@reddit
Tell your wife you're not finished growing.
That's a joke, but our interests change, grow, and develop throughout our lives. Sometimes your wardrobe will reflect those changes. Sometimes wardrobes change because comfort becomes our top priority, fashion be damned.
MaximumJones@reddit
I feel like I have completely outgrown video games. I used to LOVE them but now I just can't e bothered to play anymore.
cuchulain66@reddit
Me too. Bought a new tv to try to get back into them, which I used to really enjoy, but now it just seems like a chore.
OldHead1776@reddit
I'm older than you, and have been on motorcycles since I moved out at 18. I've defiunitely had my on and off again times with them. I rode street, road dirt, raced dirt, raced track, sometimes a few years just doing one of those. I've been cross country on motorcycles a dozen times, sometimes taking a month or two for a trip. Over covid, while I was originally enjoying it as a way to get out, traffic in my area at least, changed a lot for the worst, and there would be days I was thankful just to make it home in one piece. I started riding less. A lot less.
Honestly, the only riding I want to do anymore is taking long trips, and that's harder now that I have my dogs. So, I got a camper van, and we go do that now. I think I miss riding dirt the most, but my knees can't take it anymore. One fun afternoon is several days of barely being able to walk. We change, and it's okay to change it up. I used to have other hobbies I was really into, and I've scrapped most of those. I play guitar, hang with my dogs, and drink bourbon. We roadtrip when I have the time.
stompinstinker@reddit
Motorcycles are fun, but costly and need maintenance.
Bicycles give you exercise that makes you feel good. And they are cheap to maintain, you can park them anywhere, and if you are on dedicated lanes and trails no one is going to hit you with a car. And they are nice and quiet, and you can drive them after drinking. It’s a whole other level of freedom and stress relief.
I just zeroed in on that, but sometimes you try something and realize or are reminded how fun something is. They actually teach that stuff at AA and NA. All the stuff you enjoyed as a kid (bicycling, fishing, exploring/hiking, sports, astronomy, board games, etc.) is still fun as an adult.
I just learned to ski and bought ski equipment. Always wanted to, but now I can afford it.
jaredjc@reddit
You can get a moving violation in some states on a bicycle if you are intoxicated.
phoenixdiceflow@reddit
As you get older, your desire to connect with nature increases. It happened to me as I turned 50, I started getting back into mountain biking which was a hobby I was into during the 90s. I’m having more fun now while getting good cardio exercise at the same time.
That connection with nature is needed especially in these times of technology and AI. We need to disconnect and mountain biking or hiking in nature trails are awesome outlets.
sane-asylum@reddit
We are constantly involving creatures and yes, my interests are considerably different now than when I was younger. You never lose thrash once it’s in your blood
-R-o-y-@reddit
I hasn't happened to me (M50) yet. My music taste gets more extreme, but in many regards I'm pretty much the same as 30 years ago.
bored2death2@reddit
Not unusual. The past five years I've taken up weight lifting. Gotten into playing and painting Battletech (even become a regular player at my local ship). While 3D printing started 15 years ago with my middle son, I've 'graduated' to other shop equipment - CNC mill, laser cutting. I've also gotten really handy, made my own garage drawers for the CNC mill table, added more drawers to my existing workbench. And just this past weekend I was planning on making some hanging garage cabinets where I currently only have a shelf.
apc961@reddit
I've cycled in and out of hobbies since childhood and I'm still at it, it's not unusual.
Awe3@reddit
You’re growing up. Congratulations. ;)

Why do we think our passions and interests should not change over time?
2_Bagel_Dog@reddit
Wow! Sounds similar (at least partially). Spent my 30s and 40s touring around North America on 2 wheels - all the states and most Canadian provinces.
A few years ago, a few things happened (long story) and my motorcycles haven't left the 3 states nearest where I live. Still a great way to commute. I do miss touring sometimes and kinda look at my bikes wistfully once in a while, but I've had lots of other amazing adventures.
So see you on the road on 2 wheels or 4 ... or not 🤠
BadHairDay-1@reddit
I'm pretty sure it's normal to change interests as we age. It's going to look different for everyone. We discover new things over time, and sometimes, we simply grow out of certain aspects of our previous lives.
Continent3@reddit
I started doing the things I wish I did when I was younger but didn’t have money for. Picked up guitar. It’s been a great now that my kids are older and becoming more independent
Routine_Breath_7137@reddit
Same age with passion for motorcycles. Riding sport bikes all my life but something is telling me to sell my current bike for an ADV. Best of both worlds and let's you get clear of the cagers, go fishing, find solitude. Older I get, the more I want to be alone.
HasturCrowley@reddit
Changing interests is normal.
The only thing to be concerned about is just losing interest in everything, that could be a sign of depression.
Your case doesn't sound like that.
BrewtalKittehh@reddit
Embrace the change, my dude. Sounds like you should trade the cruisers in for a ruckus with pvc racks for your new surf board.
harrismi7@reddit
Yes, I was really into the car hobby, owning old cars, going to shows, fixing them up. I sold all of it and do not regret it at all. I just have one car now. My Dad recently sold his old car too.
Last year I moved to a smaller house and like to (try to) garden and grow plants. I also like to go to estate sales to find things for my house.
I would like to doom scroll less and get into reading books. I have some but haven’t made a lot of time to do it. I’m finding getting off my phone and the internet to be kind of difficult for me. I need to exercise more but I do daily walks or bike rides.
Jimmy-the-Knuckle@reddit
I took up rock climbing and trail running at 51 and got rid of alcohol at 53. The change was foundational.
UnderstandingRight39@reddit
I rode motorcycles for 35 years. One day I decided that they didn't interest me any more. I now build custom push bikes and ride those.
One_Toe1452@reddit
Yes, my stable of push bikes is growing, my motorcycles are going on sale.
Foolgazi@reddit
Yep, was into cars my whole life, got bored working on them a few years ago. Now I’m finishing my remaining projects so I can sell them and get out of the hobby.
StJmagistra@reddit
You don’t stop evolving after some arbitrary age unless you choose to.
MotherOf4Jedi1Sith@reddit
As long as you're following your heart, I think you'll be fine. I think a lot of Gen Xers are concerned with being posers, but you're a poser if you keep doing something out of habit and expectation, than out of desire or finding your authentic self. And yeah, these things can change over time as we grow and mature.
chrispd01@reddit
When I was in my twenties I used to wear white shorts, lacoste shirts and penny loafers without socks
Now I dress the way you used to dress….
I wouldn’t give it a whole lot of thought.

59 going on 19 again, not much has changed outside of my political views
StereotypicallBarbie@reddit
I was never into gardening until around 5 years ago…. Now that’s pretty much my entire weekends!
ONROSREPUS@reddit
Not for me. Still doing the same shit I was doing when I was 14-15 years old. Automobiles, tractors, destroying shit, building shit, playing hockey and allegedly doing some racing form time to time. Only thing I don't do it chase girls anymore I got a good one that we fit together finally.
PinkyLeopard2922@reddit
I am reverting to my sort of hippy young self. I am okay with that and just leaning into it.
FormerCollegeDJ@reddit
My interests have changed over time, yes. As an example, I’ve always liked music and followed sports throughout my life, but my tastes in both have changed over time.
With sports, some major differences relative to when I was under 30 years old include:
*Baseball: down
*College basketball: down (though I actually attend more games now than I did then, due to both money and proximity)
*Tennis: up (though my interest was even higher 10 years ago)
*Ice hockey: up
*College football: up (though not with “major” teams, who I don’t really care about; there are a few schools that are not prominent programs I follow closely)

You down with OP? Yeah, you know me.
😂
CryptographerOk3814@reddit
I’m going through this exact same thing right now. Old hobbies and habits are gone, new ones are starting. I’m more laid back now and not always go, go, go.
I’ve even noticed it is taking me a little longer to get ready in the morning. I’m just slowing down 😂
No_Maintenance_9608@reddit
I guess I'm regressing a little back to my high school days as I listen to more new wave. Maybe I'm longing for that time period. Other interests I've had they come and go and sometimes come back. So maybe it's changing a little but it's more like I'm taking a break between them.
Sintered_Monkey@reddit
So much change. I used to love video games. Now I have no patience for them at all. I have abandoned so many hobbies over the years, but at least a couple stay constant.
Delicious-Disk-122@reddit
There is nothing more constant in life than change. Could be an evolution, could be a phase. Enjoy this new version of yourself. Now that I am empty nested, I am learning all kinds of things about myself.
liddybuckfan@reddit
Change is good!! At age 38 after spending my entire life thinking I was the most unathletic person in history, I started running and within a few years I was doing ultramarathons. There's nothing wrong with listening to different music or dressing differently or having new activities if that makes you happy. Especially if you're learning something new or doing something that keeps you mentally and physically healthy-that's only going to be a good thing.
Remote-Station4687@reddit
I’ve read that humans can change tastes/interests about every 10 years (in small ways and big ways). Your new pursuits sound fun to me!
FloppyFerrett1@reddit
Things in our lives change & we evolve. We'd be so "samey samey" if we didn't - nothing awful about it :-)
user0987234@reddit
Yup. Not uncommon. It’s more likely you realized that whatever interests you have had did not allow for trying out different things. And that’s ok.
lilred7879@reddit
Absolutely - raced cars (hobby) for most of my life, sold it all at a huge loss because I just got tired of fixing crap and the part most people don't realize there is a LOT of just sitting around waiting to race. Used to Sail some now don't want the work. But man, I can do some property clearing, yard work, nature watching, rolling thru the woods, and just enjoy existing more than doing.
dcamnc4143@reddit
I'm always changing, since I was a kid. Drives my coworkers/friends/family crazy. It's fun (for me), but I've found people don't trust you as much, because they can't rely on what you'll be into in the next phase. I have to do me though.
Ok_Schedule5017@reddit
Mine have changed some as well
