Here’s a 1977 Southern Ocean shot taken in those conditions - pre GPS, weather apps, routing help etc - just a compass, sextant and dramatically falling barometer.
mamandemanqu3@reddit (OP)
That’s u?
BlackStumpFarm@reddit
A crewmate - ‘77 Whitbread. Hell of a ride!
Terrible_Toaster@reddit
Well, they do say that the Southern ocean is a lonely place. The storms are many, and the shelter scarce.
janoseye@reddit
Down upon the southern ocean sailing, down below Cape Horn?
Terrible_Toaster@reddit
Over troubled waters and the restless skies You'll see those mollymauks rise and dive.

Smooth seventies, though, amirite?

You mean like “Brandy” and “Afternoon Delight”?
olddoglearnsnewtrick@reddit
Same app, huge typhoon north of Indonesia
hedonism_bender@reddit
Have you see. What Windy has it doing Friday afternoon?
olddoglearnsnewtrick@reddit
Nope, still see it roughly in the same place.
hedonism_bender@reddit
It’s all merely a forecast and likely to change but it’s fun to see what the meteorologists predict.
Eastern_Ingenuity507@reddit
Windy is not a forecast or what meteorologists think
Double-Masterpiece72@reddit
sure bro
Eastern_Ingenuity507@reddit
Why do you think windy is a forecast? Who do you think is forecasting for them?
Double-Masterpiece72@reddit
What do you think the F in GFS and ECMWF stand for, Mr Pedant?
Eastern_Ingenuity507@reddit
It’s a forecast tool, not a forecast
Double-Masterpiece72@reddit
You must be fun at parties
Eastern_Ingenuity507@reddit
I have a blast and that’s all that matters to me
Eastern_Ingenuity507@reddit
Why do you think windy is a forecast? Who do you think is forecasting for them?
ClosetLadyGhost@reddit
What is it then?
Eastern_Ingenuity507@reddit
It’s an application to view models. One model run like what was posted is not a forecast. Windy doesn’t make any forecasts or have any of their own models.
olddoglearnsnewtrick@reddit
Those poor sould in Kamchatka have just been through TWO horrendous earthquakes and now the typhoon. Poor bastards. :(

Windy showing 30ft waves W of Cape Horn
MikeHeu@reddit
30ft ocean waves aren’t that bad with a long enough period. Still not fun though.
74_Jeep_Cherokee@reddit
When I looked earlier I believe it was between 7 and 11 seconds? I've never been off shore personally so no idea of that's good or bad
WhetherWitch@reddit
That’s very bad. Any wave period less than twice the height suuuuuucks.
one_hump_camel@reddit
it's still bad.
Imagine going up 10 meters for 5 seconds, and then fall down again for 5 seconds.
It's a rollercoaster and you can't leave.
needs28hoursaday@reddit
The biggest swells I’ve ever been kayaking through were large enough that my back started to hurt from the compression forces of going up the peaks after a couple of hours. Half the group of very experienced paddlers ended up puking and there’s nothing you can do but keep paddling. When the waves are big enough to fit an double person expedition kayak in the troughs and not have them touch the walls, you start to think maybe it’s a good time to find some earth under your feet instead.
SgtJohnsonsJohnson@reddit
I cant even imagine what 30ft+ waves look like
millijuna@reddit
I crossed the Atlantic on a 26,000 ton Merchant vessel a few years ago. It was February, and we got into some weather. At one point, you could feel the ship shuddering as we slammed into the troughs. And we were taking spray on the bridge windows. The bridge was 7 decks up from the water line, and 120 meters aft of the bow.
But I felt worse for the sailors on the Frigate that was sailing with us. Apparently it was absolutely miserable for them; all but a handful puked their guts out.
mamandemanqu3@reddit (OP)
Give me a sunfish. I’ll show you how it’s done.

Lazers are holding up better und such conditions. More comfort ratio.

Pretty normal really. There's usually lows all around the southern ocean
mamandemanqu3@reddit (OP)
I love this app I look at it for fun often. I don’t see constant storms circling Antarctica like THIS.
I found it fascinating.
swampopawaho@reddit
It does actually happen all the time. I live near the southern ocean and check these types of maps regularly.... we bear the brunt of what the southern ocean throws at us.
mamandemanqu3@reddit (OP)
So cool. Where do you live?

Here in NZ ee regularly get southern ocean storms.bitting us, and these lows travel around and around the ocean. There's usually 5 at any one time
