How good of a driver are you?

And be honest. It’s no secret we see all manner of driving on British roads, so we can’t all be the paragons of driving virtue we probably tell ourselves. Maybe you’re afraid of motorways or sometimes pull up in the bike box at red lights, well now is your opportunity for confession.
Personally, I’d give myself a 6/10. I will sometimes sit in the middle lane of motorways even if I could pull in, and I may have sometimes used the posted speed limit as more of a guideline than a rule (not anywhere silly admittedly), but otherwise I’m probably ok. I indicate, I give appropriate space when passing cyclists, I understand what hi-beams are and when to use them.
daisygiraffe13@reddit
Driving I would give myself a 6/10. I feel like I dont have great depth perception and it makes me nervous a lot of the time.
If I had to rate my parking abilities... im going 3/10. Maybe even 2. Lol
rwe46@reddit
Get out the middle lane please, thank you. Sincerely, other drivers.
Harrry-Otter@reddit (OP)
I do if there’s stuff queuing behind me, but that’s quite uncommon. I’ll admit it’s complete laziness of me just not wanting to have to pull out again in a few miles to overtake the next lorry.
HirsuteHacker@reddit
You're a shit driver. Move to the left lane.
Harrry-Otter@reddit (OP)
If there’s no queue behind you, does it honestly matter?
HirsuteHacker@reddit
Yes. If someone's in the leftane and wants to go faster than you they now have to make 2 lane changes to get around you, or overtake on your left. You are a hazard.
Harrry-Otter@reddit (OP)
Fair enough if you’re being undertaken or matching the speed of the left lane. Thats not the nature of my hogging though, I’d only be camped out in the middle if either the road is empty and I’m only there to avoid people joining the motorway at slower speeds, or I’m visibly gaining on whatever is in the left.
DanielReddit26@reddit
Nothing more annoying than a "look at me doing it properly" driver constantly swerving in and out of the middle lane up ahead whilst I'm trying to judge if sitting tight on cruise control in the middle is going to have me catch them in my lane or not.
If they just sat nicely in the middle then I'd have loads of time to make my move into the next lane.
Harrry-Otter@reddit (OP)
That’s always been my view tbh. What’s the point of pulling in between every lorry on the inside lane when I know I’m just going to be pulling out again in a couple of minutes?
DeifniteProfessional@reddit
A couple of minutes is a long time. In that time, cars behind you want to get past. A few seconds - sure, but because you *think* you might approach a lorry is bad driving
Harrry-Otter@reddit (OP)
I mean my driving depends on road conditions. If I’m bombing along in the middle, I’ll be doing a tidy pace. Obviously if I can see cars building up behind me I’d pull in sooner, but that doesn’t tend to happen much.
DeifniteProfessional@reddit
That's just terrible driving skills. I very much doubt if you find moving lanes difficult, you're actually paying attention to other drivers on the road.
Harrry-Otter@reddit (OP)
But if there’s nobody behind me, or I’m accelerating away from the bloke behind me, is anyone actually losing out?
DanielReddit26@reddit
No one said it was difficult, tbf.
DanielReddit26@reddit
Especially when there's a whole third lane for anyone wanting to really break the speed limit and get past... yet to hear a good argument for not hogging the middle to be honest!
Evening-Tomatillo-47@reddit
Well, using the word "hogging" for a start lol. Stop hogging things!
DanielReddit26@reddit
There's plenty lanes for everyone who wants one.
PitchOk1448@reddit
Well you build up traffic, don't you, because the people who should be able to pass you in lane 2 have to move into lane 3, and the people who would be passing them in lane 3 have to just sit there and be frustrated, and the end result is everyone hates you.
DanielReddit26@reddit
There's not that many people wanting to pass me though.
Harrry-Otter@reddit (OP)
I can get the argument if you’re not going particularly quickly, but if I’m in the middle lane I’ll either be doing the same speed as the car in front of me, or 70-80mph.
I’d imagine when most people think of a middle lane hogger, they’re thinking of someone doing the same speed as the lorries on the inside lane, which in fairness is frustrating.
catzrob89@reddit
It's a bit of a judgment call isn't it? Also *very* annoying to pull back into the left lane and then find that you have to brake down to 55 behind the lorry because there's no space to get back into the middle lane because the middle land guy has gone from 88 to 65.

I drive very carefully, because I don't do it often and have no illusion of being skilled.
Motorway driving is most of my expertise, and I would rather walk a few miles into town than drive anywhere urban. Absolutely hate driving around complicated road routes with unpredictable traffic.
znv142@reddit
I'm a shit driver. I don't own a car as I live in a city centre but rent a car occasionally, and the first 30 minutes are always pretty terrifying for me (I've had a license for years). Then again knowing that I am shit makes me probably safer.e

At least there are fewer instances of "license" to correct in this post. You'd think people might have learned by now.
DrSlugg@reddit
People love to run a red even in London, how else are they going to get to the next red faster?
notouttolunch@reddit
This is a stupid question because other people's bad driving makes good drivers unable to drive well.
It is simply not possible to drive whilst even just adhering to the law in some situations due to other drivers.
Compare the results here to a question that was asked earlier on one of the subs. It was about whether going slightly above or slightly below the speed limit was acceptable. Virtually everyone said it was acceptable. However, people driving at inconsistent speeds, especially when someone is driving just below the speed limit and someone else just above the speed limit, means that someone driving at the speed limit is impeded by at least one of these people, and for the sake of breaking the law, let's call it the person who is speeding.
notouttolunch@reddit
I'm a better driver than you are at writing things in English.
xcixjames@reddit
Im a solid driver. I get places fast and safe without breaking laws or hogging lanes. But i also make mistakes and dont drive professionally for a reason
sparklybeast@reddit
I think I'm alright? No accidents in going on for 30 years. No speeding tickets. How else can you judge?
CTLNBRN@reddit
Similar at 14 years. Never had an accident, speeding infringement, parking ticket, etc. I don’t drive that often, especially since covid so that probably skews the data but I’d still probably take it to suggest I’m not the worst driver.
I’m a conscious driver but also lack confidence if I’m driving somewhere unfamiliar. I get probably more annoyed than I should at other people doing dangerous things in their car but try not to let that reflect in my driving choices, other than maybe keeping more distance. Not sure where on the scale or spectrum of what is considered ‘good’ that would land me.
Haunting_Side_3102@reddit
Reminds me what my dad said about his brother: “he’s never been in an accident, but he’s seen lots in his rear mirror”.
sparklybeast@reddit

9/10. I'm one of very few people that actually go around roundabouts properly instead of straight-lining them. I always indicate. I always leave space, even for cyclists as much as I would prefer not to. Observation skills are good since I play so many video games my hand-eye co-ordination is solid and mental processing is quick. Still young enough that all of my senses work properly and my body reacts quickly. I've docked myself a point for speeding. Never insanely (e.g. I wouldn't be doing 50 in a school zone) but I'll definitely go up to 80-85 to cruise on a clear A road or motorway, and on the occasions I get a nice road with some bends I'll lean into them a bit since I've got the car for it. But generally I drive cautiously. I wouldn't go for a 50/50 overtake where others might, even if my car could easily do it.
Jimmy90081@reddit
Fucking great mate
_horizontal_@reddit
I’ve driven 30,000+ miles per year for the last 15 years and have never had an at-fault accident, and haven’t had a speeding ticket or otherwise in since 2013.
I reckon I’m a reasonably competent driver but I’m a massive fan of constantly assessing your own driving and thinking over what and why you fucked up after you fuck up. I’m also conscious of when I’ve pulled any dick moves and (not always at the time) admitted to myself why people might not have been happy with that manoeuvre.

When working for my last two jobs we had telemetrics in our vans
(Lightfoot / Teletrac Navman)
I made it a point of scoring 95%+ every week. (Youre judged on harsh acceleration / harsh braking / harsh cornering etc) pretty much a black box.
When using lightfoot you could enter weekly competitions on the app and if you scored 85% or.more and was awarded 'Elite Driver' status you could win.weekly /monthly / annual cash prizes.
I wont about £800 on LightFoot overall during my time using it.
I used to work nationwide and drive anywhere between 65-80k miles per year. (So id often do around 3/4years worth of driving per year for about 6 years) Id say im a good driver and dont ever road rage. Being tracked in my work vans for over a decade has taught me to drive sensibly in my own car.
I dont potter around but i certainly dont cause problems
Kat8844@reddit
I’m ok at driving but I’ve never enjoyed it much, I’d say I’m above average on a motorbike though because I actually enjoy riding them and have spent more time developing my skills on one through track days and tuition.
StatisticalSock@reddit
I'm an average driver who has something most British drivers lack: common sense. I use discretion a lot. If i'm driving on a 20mph road and the way is clear, wide with no traffic, I will speed up to 30-40mph. Everytime I get on the road I get annoyed by how braindead everyone is when driving. Maybe my reaction time is quicker than the average driver, maybe my eyesight is better so I can see cameras better. I don't know what it is but I always end up being pissed off whenever I drive(I live in london)
DeifniteProfessional@reddit
Occasionally slightly too fast, but I (unfortunately a self centred statement) consider myself to be a 99% percentile driver. I am courteous, keep my distance, use both lanes when merging, park within the lines, keep at the speed limit where possible*, maintain an adequate distance from the car in front, avoid braking unnecessarily, especially when traffic gets heavy, I will maintain a further distance and keep moving as opposed to stop starting, I am aware of when a car behind me might not see a hazard in front so position myself accordingly, or move early. I'm also really good at just driving without needing to piss or use my phone
AdApart5035@reddit
I'm not very good. I find it very stressful and a bit too much to concentrate on. I sold my car in 2020 and haven't really missed it.
Astronaut_Level@reddit
Never had a speeding ticket. Don’t do road rage or tailgating. May hog the middle lane or forget to indicate.
Strong-Librarian-OOK@reddit
I’m a very nervous driver, I hate driving. So I’d say I’m not a very good driver but I am quite a safe one. Im more likely to piss off someone behind me by hesitating when most people would go than crash into anyone.
NorthernblokeUK@reddit
According to my app I'm very good, though I only used it once and only drove to the shop.
SpudFire@reddit
I think I'm definitely an above average driver in terms of road safety and doing things properly. I'm not going to keep up with Lewis Hamilton on the track, nor am I as skilled as a police interceptor.
I had an instructor that pushed me to develop good habits and iron out all issues. If I did something on a lesson that would be a minor mark in the test, we'd then go over and over that thing until it was no longer an issue. He told me he didn't like to put students forward for their test until he felt they were capable of passing with 0 minors. I passed with one minor (too far away from the kerb on left corner reverse).
I compare that to the two instructors an ex of mine had, both didn't seem too bothered by her mistakes as long as they wouldn't be majors on the test. She'd been told by both those instructors that you can have 15 minors so don't need to worry about lots of little mistakes. She was an awful driver even after passing her test (10 or so minors and her instructor somehow managed to talk the examiner out of a major which would have failed her).
I think I could do one or two hours with an instructor as a refresher for what examiners look for and then be able to pass a driving test.
AutoGeneratedUser359@reddit
Humans are notoriously bad at assessing their own skills.
Based on evidence alone:
I’ve been driving 20+ years, I’ve never driven into another car, or an immobile object.
romeo__golf@reddit
Before she gave up her licence on medical grounds, my grandmother had 60+ years of accident-free driving. Didn't stop her merging onto the M25 at 40mph and calling everyone maniacs for hooting as they pass her...
PsychologicalRun1911@reddit
And likewise I had a friend who was quite competitive and was pretty skilled, did some amateur racing and did It quite well but got in probably 10 accidents because he was always doing stupid things on the road (it was never his fault always the other drivers).
romeo__golf@reddit
Generally I'm a fairly decent driver. I feel like I probably have better lane discipline than the average driver, I'm more patient around cyclists, leave junctions clear in traffic and generally read the road further ahead than I think others do, but I absolutely have a heavy right foot and drive quicker than I should. I'm also incredibly impatient with slower drivers on clear roads. I won't tailgate but I'll probably overtake and be that person you pull up behind muttering "didn't get you far..." if we get caught at the same set of lights further up.
I think my biggest issue is that I'm easily distracted, which has resulted in several parking scrapes over the years, mostly my own garage wall...
Can I get into that tight space? Absolutely. But does the radio have to be off and all the passengers in absolute silence to do so? Yes.
JoeRodge87@reddit
I often wonder what goes through the heads of those middle aged blokes you see with the baseball cap, seat far back down at an angle, one hand on the steering wheel. Weaving in and out of traffic and up the arse of others in a ford focus that sounds like someone bashing a bin lid. (Bonus points for Andy shitby blaring out)
No matter what blips I have, I like to feel a smug satisfaction that I don't drive like that by choice.
poopolisher@reddit
It’s always the people that think they’re good drivers that are the worst.
Harrry-Otter@reddit (OP)
Agreed. Usually the ones who seem to go out of their way to show what good drivers they are. I’m thinking about the people that weave between lanes to overtake and immediately pull back in, or abruptly stop at junctions to let another car out.

Practical_Arrival696@reddit
No accidents in 20 years of driving, which is a decent metric. I’ve also driven in multiple different countries in both left and right hand drives.
I’m quite defensive and leave lots of room to the car ahead, and always keep an eye on what’s happening behind so that I don’t get rear-ended. I don’t really drive quickly and am usually happy to just keep up with traffic.
I can be quite inattentive at times though and my speed limit can vary on e.g. twisty A roads, unless using cruise control. I also get minor road rage, when other drivers don’t do exactly what I want them to do.
6/10, maybe?
IamlostlikeZoroIs@reddit
I’m pretty good, I don’t hesitate on roundabouts and actually go rather than waiting for traffic to come.
I don’t pull out on people and make them slow down or break.
I can over take slow moving vehicles like tractors going 30-40mph in a 60 and in good time not incredibly slow like you’re waiting for traffic to come.
I don’t slow down going past a speed camera when I’m already doing the speed limit. Doing 50 in a 50 won’t give you a ticket but slowing down to 30 is being a nob.
I don’t hog the middle lane, I indicate, I don’t get pissy with people overtaking me, i don’t leave my highbeams on (they are automatic and work pretty well), the list goes on.

I’d give myself a 7/10. Like you, I see the speed limit as a guideline, but I tend to exceed by 5mph or so. I don’t speed around crazy amounts or drive aggressively, though I have been caught speeding 26 in a 20.
I’m good at high-beam discipline, merging lanes, and letting people go from side roads. However, I might struggle with picking the right lane if I’m in an unfamiliar city, and I probably drive a bit too close to the car in front of me on the motorway.
when_music_hits@reddit
Impatient. I'll look through the window of the car ahead, and the one ahead of them if i can, read the road and if i know the driver in front had their head in their phone, I won't wait for them to the a possible accident that affects me

Just average/normal I think. Don’t do dangerous stuff, but don’t dawdle and get in other people’s way either, I don’t crash into stuff, I do pay attention, I’m not particularly nervous, give priority when I should, don’t piss people off with country lane driving, don’t abandon parallel parking out of shyness lol. I drive almost daily, multiple times a day, and have been beeped at about three times in the last couple of years. I deserved 2 out of the 3.
That said there’s always a lot more to learn and if I were to take an advanced or other professional course, or a specific style ie rally driving I’d probably feel like a total beginner all over again. So that’s average/normal to me?

I thought I was a pretty good driver, then about 5 years ago I turned onto what I thought was a regular road but turned out to be dual carriageway with no signage and such a thick hedge between them I couldn't see the other side.
Anyhoo, about 15 seconds after turning right onto the road, I realised my error as cars going the other way arrived.
Everyone was quite nice, stopping and blocking the road while I turned around, still feel like hiding under a rock when I think about it though.
Doesn't matter how good you are, it's still just one error between you and a bad situation, and we're all capable of being wrong.

FlatTyres@reddit
I'm half way through my second provisional licence (renewed, embarrassingly) - just too expensive to learn and seeing the wait times people have to endure to get a test spot is discouraging for motivation.
I last had 20 hours of lessons when I was 22 - I found the driving part fine (manual diesel with lots of torque which made it easy not to stall) but I struggled with knowing the width of the car and I hit a parked car's door mirror. Luckly I was driving about 10 mph in the opposite direction to the parked car so both mirrors folded closed, and after stopping to check, there were no dents, cracks or paint scrapes.
I also kept creeping a bit too far over the white line in the earlier lessons.
I could parallel park fine but reverse parking was very daunting.
If I ever try to go for lessons and my test again, and I go to buy a car I definitely want to stick to small and narrow cars with good visibility of the front-left corner of the bonnet.
Self rating as a learner back then:
Confidence: 5/10 (after hitting the mirror)
Throttle, changing gear and braking: 8/10
Mirror and safety awareness: 8/10
Spacial awareness (knowledge of car width): 4/10
Decisiveness: 5/10

I'm a driving instructor, so I'd like to think pretty good. At least a 9/10 if we are talking normal day to day driving.

I drove all over London for the first time (well, West to east and then into the south, not right in the actual red area), assumed I'd fuck it up somewhere along the line and a "you fucked up son, give us some money" letter would land eventually - it hasn't, and the wall I expected to hit that goes "normal driving" to "London madness, omfg what is happening?" just never came.

I would say that the best way to perhaps define "good driver" is by saying "how much of a legal driver are you?"
I stick to the speed limits, put on my headlights when it drizzles, leave a good stopping distance, don't use my phone and always have a seatbelt on. For me this is what a "good" driver should be.
Actually, the one person I knew who bragged about how bad of a driver they were, tragically died in a collision. I'm sure if they knew their fate they wouldn't have been so open in admitting speeding and using their phone. But tbf she thought she was invincible.

mainukfeed@reddit
Depends what you class as good driving, most people think being "safe" is good driving.
I think if you can drive at 99% of the speed limit 99% of the time, which means basically doing 30 in a 30. Without hesitating, letting other drivers in front for no reason. Not giving way when you don't have to and then following the highway code almost perfectly, then yes you are a good driver.
Taxi drivers used to be like this, didn't fuck around, just always A to B as fast and simple as possible. But their skill has gone down in the past few years.
I'm sick of being stuck in a car doing 25mph, on an empty road on a relaxed Thursday evening in the sub urbs.
Bonus points if you drive 10% above the speed limit.
