How much are you paying for a hygienist cleaning?

I feel like prices have gone through the roof?
I've been quoted £105 for the basic service, and £138 for the airflow cleaning with My dentist.
I am sure it was at some point around £75 at the most 🥲
AlarmedAlarm626@reddit
I’m with a NHS dentist and a scale and polish done by my hygienist is £60 (north west)
Kimmy026@reddit
Hi which nhs dentist is this?
AlarmedAlarm626@reddit
It's a Bupa NHS dentist.
Serious_Badger_4145@reddit
I ask my nhs dentist for a scale and polish. It falls under band a. If you've got a private dentist fair enough I know a lot of ppl can't get a nhs dentist but if your nhs dentist is telling you to book in with the hygienist they're taking the piss. It's an nhs eligible proceedure a lot of dentists just bank on people not knowing
Proper_Concern_1533@reddit
NHS scale and polish is a quick 2 minute removal of superficial plaque only. Not worth it in my opinion. I pay £65 for a 30 minute hygiene clean which is a lot more thorough and gets rid of any staining too that’s built up in the last 6 months.
Chris-TT@reddit
Who are you royalty?! I've been given so many letters saying I'm ditched as an NHS client, that i've given up. I joined 5 in 6 years and not been able to keep hold of one.
Jumpy-Jello-@reddit
Do you book that, or just ask while you're there?
Serious_Badger_4145@reddit
Just ask during checkup. They'll look and if it needs doing they do it then and there
Acidphire21@reddit
hygenist cleaning comes under band b
otherwise band a from dentist for a normal scale and polish
*i know because i just had one for treatment of single deep pocket
Ok_Inflation4320@reddit
Crazy price. Google and you’ll find a cheaper alternative.
BuildingControlUK@reddit
15.99 Per month.
3 hygienist appointments and 3 check ups per year.
noochnbeans@reddit
Do you have some sort of membership? That sounds quite good
BuildingControlUK@reddit
Yea it’s with a local private practice.
Spottyjamie@reddit
Same here, no nhs ones at all in my town
Bus8082@reddit
How bad is your hygiene that you need THREE appointments a year???
oozyeski@reddit
A british person's dental hygiene shaming is ironic.
Ambitious-Win-9408@reddit
How bad is yours that your first assumption when someone says they go 3 times a year is that it's a bad thing?
Bus8082@reddit
Mine is perfect, that’s why I only go once a year. I cannot fathom what you must be doing to need three a year.
HulkJ420@reddit
At minimum you have to go every 6 months.
nathderbyshire@reddit
No you shouldn't. The better you clean the less appointments you should need. People on this thread just telling on themselves lol
Or are we going to say the NHS is wrong now?
If you have crowded teeth, overlapping, a physical disability that makes brushing completely harder then ofc it may require more appointments, that doesn't apply to everyone though
Think some of you guys are being ripped off a bit or not brushing properly
Any_Preference_4147@reddit
If you're only having one deep clean a year I can assure you, your hygiene isn't as good as you think it is.
Honey-Badger@reddit
Because hygienists recommend 2 times a year for healthy teeth. I now live in Canada where they have American style dentistry and even they dont want me coming more than twice a year and thats with full coverage. I believe you have to go more often if something is wrong.
jimmybiggles@reddit
i go twice (sometimes thrice) a year because i get a build up of minerals behind my teeth from my saliva. no amount of brushing etc completely removes it! i brush 2x a day for 3mins, and floss every other day.
the rest of my teeth are perfect!
stickyjam@reddit
i used to have this, but upgraded my basic electric toothbrush to a oral b IO range, a lot more power that my daily brushing behind the teeth has stopped it happening now. Perhaps a bit of better attention behind the teeth too, but the toothbrush definitely has more oomph than my cheaper model.
I also have an electric descaler like the other chap mentioned, great for between teeth too.
Playful_Beyond_2218@reddit
You need to floss twice a day and then it won’t build up anywhere near as much. Also consider adding in a water flosser
jimmybiggles@reddit
trust me, tried every trick! it just happens, sadly :( my dentist suggested it could even be to do with dehydration, but nope, i am well hydrated etc. he said some people just get it (brushing and flossing definitely helps to keep it at bay, but it'll never stop happening)
Playful_Beyond_2218@reddit
Yes everyone gets more in that area as it’s where the saliva has more minerals. I found using the floss picks after snacks/ lunch as well stopped it building up. It’s best to try and keep on top of it otherwise it can lead to bacteria building up underneath it which causes periodontitis ( bone loss under the teeth)
jimmybiggles@reddit
everyone gets more but i have more minerals in my saliva than the average joe :)
i am very aware of what it does, how to slow the build up, and that's why i go to my hygienist often :)
Immediate_Fly830@reddit
I get the same, just behind the front bottom teeth where the tongue sits. Apart from that my teeth are very good, I actually bought a tooth descaler though and once a week just gently remove it on the lowest setting, works a treat.
jimmybiggles@reddit
i have a manual descaler/scraper but i'd much rather leave it to the pros for £60 every 4-6 months, though it definitely helps in the interim... not tried an electric one though!
Immediate_Fly830@reddit
Na trust me, the electric one is the way, I dont bother with manual ones
The electric one just very gently melts it away in seconds.
Honestly though, if you are in top of your hygiene you only need the lowest setting because it takes many months to set hard so it's actually still quite soft and will come away easily.
annedroiid@reddit
Mine is £120 for the fancy air polish but I am in London.
SermoLupiAdAnglos@reddit
I'm on Denplan £20 a month for 2 dentist check ups and 2 hygienist visits a year including cleaning.
So that's £240 a year, half to cover off the dentist, so £120 divided by two for each 6 month interval, meaning £60 per hygienist cleaning for me.
Unique_Day6395@reddit
£65, private, Surrey.
CeleryEastern8993@reddit
I pay around £10 a month for denplan and have two cleans including scale and polish a year. Discount off any other treatments required and I often get freebies thrown in at my checkups too like interdental brushes, floss etc
EyeAware3519@reddit
£85 for me. Shop around.
Frequencxy@reddit
£79 in moorgate
satinpads-0j@reddit
I pay £21/m for a practice plan with a nice private practice that includes two hygienist visits and 2 dentist visits a year. Feels like a bargain looking at this thread. (Gloucestershire)
Bus8082@reddit
I paid £80 at my very nice private practice in Surrey last week. Seems about the going rate. If anything, given where I am and the practice is expected that to be higher than others.
toridoki@reddit
NHS Scotland, £0; included in my checkup once a year.
Garstick@reddit
Had my first hygeinist appointment in my 35 years of life recently.
Cost me £85 for 4 minutes between me entering and leaving the room.....
TransatlanticMadame@reddit
£148 including the airflow. London.
WrongExplanation1065@reddit
That's still pretty high.
£55 and £23 extra for airflow is what I pay in London
BengaliBunny85@reddit
For some reason I can’t see your response here but can in my notifications. Anyway thanks for confirming, probably is a little too far for me but is useful to know other places might be quite a bit cheaper. I’ve been going to my dentist for 10 plus years so feel like I need to be loyal lol
WrongExplanation1065@reddit
I think it's like most places, just need to check around. If it's a nice dentist you like but it's a bit more expensive, might be better than paying less for one that isn't as good
BengaliBunny85@reddit
Please would you mind sharing where?! 😊
WrongExplanation1065@reddit
This was in Surbiton
Missmarvelx@reddit
£55, NHS dentist :)
20127010603170562316@reddit
I managed to get into an NHS dentist after quite a lot of 101 calls regarding severe tooth pain.
I paid ~£28x2 for the urgent treatment. Should have only been the one charge but I didn't want to argue the toss having just got onto an NHS dentist.
After that, I paid ~£80, and on my current treatment plan have received three fillings and a deep clean. Going in next week for another filling, which will be included in my treatment plan.
So.. about £80? Plus fillings and xrays and stuff. Still £80.
SportTawk@reddit
I've not seen a hygienist for 20 years, had my check up last week, one small filling.
If you brush your teeth properly it's a complete waste of money!
Basically, use the cheapest toothpaste, I've used plain old Colgate, £1, for the past thirty years, manual tooth brush, again a basic medium brush and replace it every year. Brush for no more than a minute and a bit of flossing.
Works for me
boringfantasy@reddit
You've just got good genetics. Many of us brush 2x a day, avoid sugar and still end up with like 50 fillings.
SportTawk@reddit
Weird 😮
WeSavedLives@reddit
My NHS dentist does it all during my check ups, so £29.50.
I am incredibly lucky
SemtaCert@reddit
How long do they actually spend doing it?
WeSavedLives@reddit
15 mins maybe, ive never really paid attention
SemtaCert@reddit
So definitely not a proper clean then as it should take at least 30 minutes just for that part.
Gisschace@reddit
That’s just the basics most dentist do, not a proper hygienist appointment
WeSavedLives@reddit
What does your hygienist do beyond a scale, a polish, a deep clean and stain removal?
Gisschace@reddit
It’s the amount of time they take, a standard dentist appointment doesn’t have time to do the same as a hygienist appointment.
You might swear you don’t need longer, my sister is the same, but everyone does.
Thatsthebadger@reddit
Did they say how long the appointment would last? Standard offerings are usually 30 mins, 45 mins and 60 mins. Bear in mind that the time has to allow for notes to be made and the surgery to be turned around between patients so you might not actually be in the chair for that long.
The fact that they're offering airflow is good, go for it if you can afford to it's loads better than the traditional scrape and polish with hand tools. The hyg will be able to remove more plaque in the session, plus it removes stains
If you don't want to move to a different dental practice for your check ups, look for hygienists that are available through 'Direct Access'. It means that you can see a hygienist without seeing a dentist at the same practice. It's that or you ask your dentist to refer you to the other practice but a lot don't like to do that if they offer the service in house.
Source: was a dental receptionist at a busy practice that had a lot of referrals to see the hygienists.
bogyoofficial@reddit
£75 for my mum who lives in Central London. £90 for me who lives in the Midlands.
haggis_catcher-@reddit

zimba10@reddit
£65 in SW London
Educational_Corgi809@reddit
Last time I was at the dentist, I asked a few questions regarding an issue with one of my teeth was told i should book in with the hygienist as they would have more time to check and go over any issues. I reminded him that he was the dentist and thats how I ended up going private.
msully89@reddit
£70, but sometimes they send a text out saying they have a discount running and offer them for £40. Usually a trainee doing it under supervision.
reader270@reddit
Airflow with my private dentist is £60 something I think. Plus they do special offers every now and then.
katie-kaboom@reddit
I just had my teeth cleaned and it was £85 (private dentist's hygienist).
whataledge@reddit
£55 in East London
gemmajenkins2890@reddit
I paid £185 for the one I had back in February.
I have gone private tho, so guessing that comes into it.
BengaliBunny85@reddit
Mine is £100 including Airflow near Canary Wharf. Where are you?! But I think you are right the price has jumped which sucks for me as tea stains my teeth so badly 😭
Window-Inevitable@reddit
You can use Groupon if you only need a dental hygiene. Much cheaper and the quality is the same.
boringfantasy@reddit
Covered via my work, usually like £10-30
HulkJ420@reddit
£75 for a standard. £97.50 for a deeper clean.
Whoppa-seagull@reddit
I can’t get a dentist!!
SemtaCert@reddit
Where do you live there are no private dentists taking on patients?
Fuzzy_Cantaloupe6353@reddit
£79 here.
So £105 doesn't seem to out there maybe look around if you can
Tank-Girl89@reddit
I’m lucky to have an NHS dentist but they don’t offer scale and polish. I have to book separately with the hygienist which is about £70.
Acceptable_Hope_6475@reddit
£80 last Saturday
Whoppa-seagull@reddit
During Covid my dentist said they would let us know when they are starting again, but they did not & I did ask again. I do hear from a lot of people that they were dumped after Covid. I was an NHS patient.
Rilkal@reddit

Hughdungusmungus@reddit
I pay £90. I'm a NHS patient, but hygienist is private work. I can claim £80 back through my work insurance though.
NoDrama430@reddit
Check Independent hygienists. You don't have to see the hygienist at your regular dentist. Some independent practices or standalone hygiene clinics offer better rates closer to £70.
_isolati0n@reddit
I see the hygeinist every 6 months for a scale and polish and it costs £15
