Ryzen 7 5800X3D - Worth hunting down?
Posted by CertainHorror@reddit | buildapc | View on Reddit | 32 comments
I'm currently running a Ryzen 5 5600x and wanting to upgrade my CPU.
With the costs of RAM and such, at the moment im not in a financial position to upgrade motherboard, CPU and RAM to AM5/DDR5.
So interested in upgrading to what I've read is the best AM4 CPU, the 5800X3D.
My issue is these seem rarer than rocking horse 💩, and the ones that are available are seemingly very over priced.
is the £400-£450 for the upgrade worth it? (Would i see a difference)
or is it worth saving more for longer and going AM5/DDR5?
*GPU recently upgraded to a 5060ti, if that helps or is relevant.

Im on a ryzen 5 5600 with oc 4.65GHZ (a 5600X in theory), paired with an AMD RX 9070 XT, playing at 1400p and even tho I'm bottlenecked I'm not spending any more $ on AM4

Yes, if the price is right and it's local and you are able to stress test it before buying it.
coolboy856@reddit
No? You can get an am5 upgrade for under £400-450...

Motherboard, CPU and Ram for under £400-450?
My DDR4 RAM wont be compatable or usable on an AM5 board, and couldnt find 32GB of DDR5 ram for much less than £400, let alone with a motherboard and CPU aswell.
coolboy856@reddit
Lol, you sell your old parts. You spend £60 on motherboard, £100 on CPU, £200 on memory.
GIGASHORTER@reddit
They've jacked up the prices for in the used market.. just upgrade and get a 7800x3d instead. Or even better a 9800x3d
f1rstx@reddit
won't be any difference with 5060Ti, so absolutely not worth it
Ok-Use-8592@reddit
No it's a single digit uplift for wayyy too much money
MB_839@reddit
Not worth it if you currently have a 5600x imo.

I purchased one about a year after they released the 5800x3D as an upgrade from a 5600x. Then it’s was £209 Overall I have been very impressed nothing that I play or workloads I have chucked at it have not caused any issues or slowdowns. FPS 1% lows was a major upgrade for me.
However if they’re going for over £400 then it’s really not worth it, maybe the 5700x3D is a better option and more common so prices should be more reasonable.
Otherwise it’s a waiting game to go to an AM5 board and CPU, if RAM ever drops its prices

There's 5500x3d going on Aliexpress for under 200usdÂ
CertainHorror@reddit (OP)
Saw those, they came out in 2025 but are actually slower in some aspects/areas than the 5600x. Doesn't seem worth spending the money for some benefits and some drawbacks. Especially when im more likely to notice the places its slower more than the places its quicker.
my5cworth@reddit
The 5600x has a higher base and boost clock speed than the 5800x3d as well. So make sure that what you're trying to buy is what you need.
I went from a 5600x to a used 5700x3d for $300 and although it's an improvement, I can't defend the price I paid for it.

Nah lol , just save for AM6
Franseven@reddit
Am6 is a 2028 thing
CertainHorror@reddit (OP)
Consensus seems to be to save my money, until I actually NEED to upgrade. And then do it properly to AM5/AM6.
Thanks to all who have taken time to answer and help me out.

Ythem@reddit
I'm seeing 5700x3d's for £260-300
Claptown420@reddit
5700x3d for 160€ was a 200iq move in 2024
dTmUK@reddit
Id be happy with a 5700X3D, currently on a 3700X. If anyone knows where can buy in the UK for good price that would be great thanks

Depends on what game you play! You could also have a look of 5600x vs 5500x3d as a small upgrade if you play cpu heavy games. That is prob best price for performance for 212$ since all the other am4 x3d chips are impossible to find. Any am4 cpu priced over a brand new 7800x3d feels dumb to me. Keep in mind 5500x3d is 0.6mhz slower than 5600x3d so if you do cpu intensive workloads you will lose performance. Gaming wise should be a visible jump in avg fps and stability (1% lows)
dirtydragondan@reddit
its a worth it upgrade for the boost and end stage AM4
but clearly as you know full well - scarcity, and price make it a tough find - or for a decent price.
two key ways I see it-
1) If getting one is doable, then yes, do it. If cost is no/barely an issue.
2) if cost is an issue - (and depends wither by 'cant afford it' vs 'its not a good value proposition') then to me id say:
- The cost of the 5800X3D , if it is as much as 2 of the 3 (or maybe greater than 50%) of the next gen AM5: Mobo / CPU / Ram , then prob be willing to wait or spend more and just platform upgrade.
I have one, I went from Ryzen 3600 to the 5800X3D, and that was with a 3060ti, now a 5070.
MoistWelder8712@reddit
For the price of the 5800x3d you can upgrade to AM5, so no.
5500x3D is the only decent value option on AM4 but it depends on where you live, scout for that first if you wanna save as much as possible.
Selling your mobo/CPU and RAM combined with a budget of 400-450 is plenty enough to get DDR5 32gb Ram, a b650 and a good CPU like a Ryzen 7700/9600x btw.
iridescent_herb@reddit
not worth it, are you being cpu bounded in games? i upgraded from 5600x to 5700x3d, but that was when aliexpress was flooded by 5700x3d at 100 usd and i sold my 5600x, and even that people were not recommending it wholeheartedly. :)
Due_Permission4658@reddit
there not worth it at this point anymore too overpriced 400-450 is ridiculous for a 3 year old USED cpu on a dead platform with no upgrade path after just stick with the 5600x still solid cpu
NotSynthx@reddit
It's definitely not worth it lol save your money for either AM5 or AM6 even since it's coming relatively soon
Mr_F_66@reddit
Find the next best thing, 5700x3d.. Even then, the price diff to 9800x3d in my country is around 40$, so yeah, just enjoy your 5600x..
farq3x@reddit
You dont need a 5800x3d for a 5060ti
