Because 5.56 out of this barrel is a big waste of powder, anemic ballistics, doubtful accuracy, gassy, awful on your suppressors if you choose to suppress, and will probably lead to people not trusting your judgment. But by all means, go ahead, it’s $40… If you want tiny, there is always 300blk, 9mm, 45acp and if you really want to to bo a goober 5.7mm
Foxxy__Cleopatra@reddit
So is anything ≤12.5” but pretty moot considering it’s by far the cheapest centerfire rifle cartridge. Nothing comes close without "wasting" powder for anywhere near the price.
Depends on application. Compared to 20”? Sure, but so does an 11.5”.
All things being equal shorter barrels are actually more accurate since their stiffer with less whip.
Not sure what the gas port ⌀ on these are, but this can be tuned out to a surprising degree even on a 7.5”, but gas stacking on any suppressed 5.56 can’t be entirely tuned out no matter what.
If you’re not shooting these suppressed you are lacking brain cells (if not for the micro TBI you’re getting with every shot lol), but this is entirely based on how your can is constructed and what it was designed for. Something like an OCL Infinity that can go on a Nemo Nitemare 8" 300 Win Mag (link because it's awesome), or hell even an RC2 that was designed for full auto mk18’s wouldn’t even flinch at how most 7.5’s get used.
This is correct only because most people only hear the fudlore that always get’s parroted and can’t look at the stats or form opinions independently. You’re not going to use it the same way you would a 20” ofc, it’s a very capable PDW.
This comparison always get’s blown way out of proportion. Yes, 300BLK is more powerful but at 200yds with 110gr Barnes vs 77gr mk262 we're talking the difference of less than 100 ft/lbs., like comparing 9mm to .40S&W while the 5.56 still shoots flatter with less recoil. At CQB distances you're likely not going to appreciate the difference between 750 ft/lbs. and 1,000 ft/lbs., while the 5.56 would actually be penetrating body armor better.
5.56 even out of a 7.5" at 200yds is still more deadly than 9mm at point blank while shooting flatter with less recoil.
See 9mm but worse.
The gap in performance between 5.7 even out of a 10.4” P90 and 7.5” 5.56 is larger than the gap in performance between 5.7 and 22LR, while 5.7 and 5.56 are basically the same price.
TL;DR: Often misunderstood, 7.5" 5.56 aren't nearly as silly as the hivemind loves to parrot and carry a lot of practical utility as a PDW especially with regards to ballistics or when ammo price is a concern.
ArrezTheAce@reddit
Honestly, good comment. In a perfect world 300blk would be better but for being more expensive and having to stock a new ammo type, I'd rather use a shorty 5.56 with a can.
Foxxy__Cleopatra@reddit
There's a reason many LEO and Military field stuff like the HK416C, HK53, SIG 552, SIG RSAR, Micro Galil, Mini Beryl, etc., all in 5.56 instead of 300BLK.
gfx260@reddit
What LE is using a 7.5” 5.56?
Foxxy__Cleopatra@reddit
Probably most notably the London Metropolitan Police lol but tons of SWAT, Police special units, anti terror, and even some motor cycle units have used 5.56 PDW's in anywhere from 5.5"-9".
gfx260@reddit
“Actually…”
Dude, you can buy it up if you want but if you want a tiny gun, there are better options. It’s that simple, yeah, there is an odd niche situation where 7.5” AR in 5.56 has an upper hand but not over a 10.5 or 11.5 for the trade off. And if you really need something THAT compact for CQB, you’re going to run a bullpup, another caliber, etc…
Foxxy__Cleopatra@reddit
Hmm... Buy either a completely new platform, or a completely different (likely more expensive) caliber...
Or just slap together an inexpensive upper and run everything else that you already have.
Y'all are completely missing the point and it's not really even all that niche.
And name anything and I can name "a better option". 5.56? Oh bro you know 6ARC is way better in every way, doesn't matter that it's more expensive with heavier recoil. See? Not hard, but entirely misses the point. "300BLK? How about 338..." You get the picture.
And as an autist that literally owns a 5.56 AR in a 20", 16", 14.5", 12.5" 11.5", 10.5" and 7.5" with multiple configurations thereof, I can say that a suppressed 7.5" can still feel like a lil PDW while a suppressed 10.5" definitely feels like a full-size carbine. Also rides along in the farm truck/tractor/SxS considerably easier too, no contest.
Do I like my 7.5" 300BLK more? Certainly, and it's not even close. However the 7.5" 5.56 actually gets used more though, and it's not even close.

Ragnarok112277@reddit
True but one does it with ~5 grains of powder vs ~25 in a 5.56
Foxxy__Cleopatra@reddit
Who cares when they're the same price and most people already have stock piles of the latter.
Also 5.7 is also notoriously difficult to reload and can't be loaded to 7.5" 5.56 performance while you're free to download or use more optimized powder for 5.56 however much you want.

"Dedicated" 22LR conversion set up barrel
gfx260@reddit
Get a dedicated.22 barrel, 5.56 barrels aren’t accurate with .22lr. The twist rate is wrong and they’re often wildly inaccurate.
DemureCynosure@reddit
I can't afford to shoot 300blk nowadays. I bought into the platform thinking the cartridge prices would come down eventually, but subs just won't come down in price. I regret buying into the platform.

As much as it pains me to admit it, a 7.5" 5.56 AR makes sense for the individual that already has a kit set up for an AR, doesn't want to (or can't) change calibers, and wants/needs a very compact PDW-esque weapon that has the same controls as the rest of their rifles.
5.56 out of a 7.5" barrel is still going to have better ballistics than a 9mm out of a similar length barrel, like an MP5, and that's not taking into account load selection or any of the new, fancy high-pressure casings that are available now.
Still...ewww... Brother, ew... It has all of the downsides of being loud, flashy, hard on components, gang stereotypes associated, etc. BUT! It has been "battle tested" during the turf wars of places like Chiraw and St. Louis, for what that's worth.
Package_Objective@reddit
Your argument makes perfect sense in the context of switching to 300 BO. With 5.56 AR this barrel length, you are looking at between 1800 and 2200 fps depending of the load. It's really quite the waste if you ask me. Shooting a rifle round to get 600 ft pounds of energy hurts my brain.
Gloomy-Collar-583@reddit
I completely agree that from a purely energy on target standpoint, switching to 300 BO at that point makes sense. I have friends that refuse to go outside of their caliber selections and still want backpack guns, though, and my point was that 5.56 out of a 7.5" barrel, while wasteful, is still pretty lethal, especially within 100yds. Most factory 5.56 loads out of a 7.5" barrel are coming out with more energy than most .357 magnum factory loads out of longer barreled handguns (unless you're looking at really hot "factory" stuff like Buffalo Bore-at which point it's pretty comparable) and I don't think most people would say .357 magnum is ineffective.
Package_Objective@reddit
Energy =/= Energy transfer, hunters will talk all about the importance of diameter and weight of a projectile to actually achieve proper Energy transfer unless the velocity is absolutely cooking which 5.56 needs desperately.
Package_Objective@reddit
Ft lbs of energy is nowhere close to the whole story of "ballistics" a 22 caliber projectile needs tons more velocity to be as terminally effective as a much heavier and wider projectile. This applies to FMJs and hollow points.

The HK53 with an 8 inch barrel saw plenty of military and police service, including use by the SAS in North Ireland.

Some low end complete lower, a 7” red or blue anodized handguard, a corresponding color matched charging handle, no stock or brace necessary, no irons or optics necessary either. Maybe can even afford a nice color matched anodized muzzle device… All in for less than $250-300 ea?
