Was demolishing Tabán a mistake? Time to bring back the bohemian quarter?

Hi Budapest folks,
I’m a Pole who’s been following the ongoing reconstruction of historic buildings on the Tabán side of the Castle Hill with great interest. While controversial to some, they are undeniably bringing back the city’s pre-war grandeur. This got me thinking about a potentially bolder step: the reconstruction of the entire lost Tabán district itself.
In my opinion, the demolition of Tabán in the 1930s was a huge mistake. It had a unique, bohemian atmosphere - almost like a Hungarian Montmartre - with narrow streets, taverns, artists and that special Balkan-Hungarian vibe that was a crucial part of the city’s historical identity. Its absence created a void that modern planning hasn’t really filled.
We already see individual palaces being rebuilt on the hill, but is there a valid case for recreating more of the old, low-rise, vernacular architecture of Tabán? Could it become a lively artistic quarter with cafés, galleries and that bohemian spirit again? Or is “urban continuity” better served by keeping the park and using modern infill?
I’d love to hear honest opinions from locals and regular visitors - especially from people who live in Budapest or know the area well. Is large-scale reconstruction of this lost district the right path, or is it better to leave it as green space and memory?
Thanks in advance!

My family was a native Tabanian, 4 generations of pub owners.

Nope, it was not a mistake. Forget the romantic bullshitting around it. Learn more about it (in Hungarian) on this walk:

It was catching fire over and over again.

Köszönöm, hogy megmutattad ezeket a csodálatos képeket !! 🤍🩵

Bizonyos részén hatalmas tűz volt , sok épület leégett. A végleges lebontás utána következett. Imádtam látni ezeket a képeket, és imádnám, ha újra egy olyan városrész lenne ott, mint ami most Szentendre belvárosa például. Úgy gondolom, erre nincs most kezdeményezést, és nincs tervben sem. Marad a történelem ismerete, és a romantika a szívünkben.

It wasn’t a mistake to demolish it. Yes, it was the partyquarter because everything was cheap there, mostly because the people living there were extremely poor. It was the hotbed for cholera and other illnesses.
The nostalgia comes from the good times, not from those who lived there

Tabán was the last "old" district. Neither the floods nor the advancements reached it. Unfortunaqtely it was a kind of slum, and the sollution they tried was relocating the residents into small but modern(ish) apartments with better infrastructure and possibilities.
If we really want to save something that would be some old XIX century brick houses as bohemian quarter. Although it's not a district, some are actually saved and repurposed called "romkocsma".

Most of these single story buildings needed to be demolished as they were horrible to live in - dark, wet, moldy. Also it looked more like a village than a close to the centre area of a capital city. We wanted to look like europe and not like the balkans. The secession/arte nouveau/art deco palaces and houses that were built around here were faboulous replacements, sadly a lot of them were destroyed during the war, and were replaced by uglier commie designs. Bohemian quarters are definitely needed but bohemians - mostly youngsters, artists, students - could varely afford living in the city anymore. You can find some bohemian parts in budapest still, like Raday utca (destrict 9), Deri Miksa utca (d8) bartok bela ut (d11).

Tabán was a filthy shantytown in the center of the city. It caused security, health, flood safety and traffic problems for the entire city. I believe seeing the old photos we tend to romanticize the past. Sure it would be nice if you imagine it without its population as a touristy walk area with restaurants and cafes but it was never really like that. The similarly structured old Budafok center neighborhood (that still exists) is still full with buildings shared by 5-6 families living in poverty - 100 years later.

The demolishing of the Tabán-district was not a mistake!

I feel the same way as you, probably if it was kept it'd be my favorite part of the city, but it doesn't seem possible to rebuild it now. Mostly because the main Buda-Pest traffic crossing through it and the volume of the investment would be huge. I think we have to rely on books and these great pictures if we want to dive into these very romantic and unique atmosphere.. I wish someone would put some concepts together though.

It was a mistake to destroy it, but nowadays there so much things in its place it would be impossible to remake.
