Princess Peach or Princess Toadstool?

Ok, with SMB Galaxy in the theaters it makes me realize there is a generational gap in what you call the character.
I was basically done with Nintendo after the SNES, so I always thought of her as Princess Toadstool.
How about you?
GreenPhilosophy8482@reddit
Forgot about princess daisy.
Rhomega2@reddit
Introduced to her as Toadstool on the SNES, but when they called her Peach in Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Mario Sunshine, I adjusted immediately. I prefer Peach anyway.
desertdweller2011@reddit
i constantly roll my eyes at people who talk about the MaNdElA eFfEcT but this thread is blowing my mind bc i swore we called her peach in super mario kart on snes. i never even had an n 64, i still have and play my original snes from 1994. but i call her peach!
Prize_Ad6430@reddit
Is super mario kart on snes the first super mario game?
CantFindMyWallet@reddit
No, Super Mario Bros. came out in 1985 on NES. There had been 3 NES Super Mario Bros. games, 1 SNES game (Super Mario World), and 1 GB game (Super Mario Land) when the first Mario Kart game released.
Prize_Ad6430@reddit
I was being a smartass. I was born in 77 had an Atari 2600, NES, SNES etc. Was directed at someone posting about Princess Peach and telling them it was Princess Toadstool in the early days.
FoppyRETURNS@reddit
The only game that had her as Peach was Yoshi's Safari.
desertdweller2011@reddit
i consulted my bestie and she informed me i’m remembering incorrectly bc when we played mario kart she’d always say ‘fucking princess’. lol so, just princess - neither princess toadstool nor peach.
eat_like_snake@reddit
Toadstool.
Just like how Bowser is still King Koopa to me.
Puzzleheaded_Race_90@reddit
Wait...koopalings? Tell me you just made that up...
KeyboardMunkeh@reddit
From Super Mario Bros 3.
Puzzleheaded_Race_90@reddit
Weird..I don't remember that at all
luxtabula@reddit
In the cartoon they were the koopa kids, but the game called then koopalings since SMB 3. The cartoon also had different names for them, the video games uses famous singers while the cartoon went by characteristics.
Puzzleheaded_Race_90@reddit
This is really helpful, thank you
luxtabula@reddit
This was the naming convention, the cartoons had pretty garbage names but I was particular to cutie pie
2099AD@reddit
From what I understand...
In the Japanese version of SMB3, the Koopalings/Koopa Kids DID NOT HAVE NAMES! But it's 7 new characters going into a kid's cartoon, they needed names.
The cartoon was in development while the game was being localized so, DiC came up with their own set of names, not knowing that Nintendo of America was doing the same. DiC's were more personality-based names, while NOA named all of the characters after random famous musicians.
That's how we ended up with two sets of names.
luxtabula@reddit
The Nintendo names were far better.
CantFindMyWallet@reddit
I've never heard those names on the right - they were not called that in the game in the west, at the very least. According to the Player's Guide from Nintendo Power and the instruction manual that came with the game, the names on the left were their names in the game.
luxtabula@reddit
The bold was the game, the non bold were the cartoon names in super Mario world when the koopalings were introduced as the koopa kids.
https://youtu.be/uq_YeCHccuY?feature=shared
CantFindMyWallet@reddit
Ah, I assumed it was the other way because it said cartoon first.
luxtabula@reddit
LLMs suck ass
bony-tony@reddit
These are either wrong or backwards. Morton Koopa Jr. and Ludwig von Koopa were definitely their names in the game.
Or at least in the Nintendo Power article that told you all the tricks to beating the game. I remember feeling like a fairly erudite 10 year old for getting both of those references.
I never watched the cartoon.
luxtabula@reddit
Game is left, cartoon is right.
clandahlina_redux@reddit
Maybe should have cropped the header since it’s wrong.
clandahlina_redux@reddit
This is backwards. The bold names are the game names and the others are the cartoon names.
Puzzleheaded_Race_90@reddit
I'm craving up because whew, I didn't remember those names.. they're kind of awful, but kooky von koopa is top tier
hick_allegedlys@reddit
It was used in the cartoon as well
Puzzleheaded_Race_90@reddit
I assume you mean koopalings, and not koopa kids? There were also like 4 different cartoons, but i think only 2 of them would have the koopalings. I'm looking into it, trying to figure out where i got my wires crossed, and Mario party games have characters called koopa kids, but they are different characters. I dunno. I'll look into it more when I have a chance. I do appreciate the help though, legitimately
hick_allegedlys@reddit
Yes, Koopalings. It was used in the Nintendo Power magazines as well.
Inever realized Koopa Kids was a thing.
Puzzleheaded_Race_90@reddit
I could be simply getting my wires crossed. Someone else mentioned they remember koopa kids from the show. But I could be very wrong. There were a lot of different sources in the early days, and they didn't all agree.
TheDukeofArgyll@reddit
Puzzleheaded_Race_90@reddit
Yeah, I remember the koopa kids. I don't tremendously them being called koopalings. Sorry if I wasn't clear
burnafter3ading@reddit
Rattling my brain (before I just look it up. I remember tye girl being Wendy o'Koopa and another was Iggy. I also remember the one with the hair part being associated with classical music...Wolfgang? That's all I got. Still koopa kids to me.
SilentSerel@reddit
The one with the hair part is Ludwig.
burnafter3ading@reddit
Yeah, I looked them all up as a refresher. Still, strange association to have rattling around my databanks.
Puzzleheaded_Race_90@reddit
Lemmy is in there, too
burnafter3ading@reddit
Yeah. I'm 2 for 3 upon search.
Puzzleheaded_Race_90@reddit
Not too shabby, though
burnafter3ading@reddit
I'm absolutely gonna watch a YouTube video of the old boss fights with a cocktail when my shift ends.
Puzzleheaded_Race_90@reddit
Sounds pretty amazing. I'm gonna try to look into the sources of the different names (not the individual names, but the koopalings/bowser's kids/koopa kids thing)
burnafter3ading@reddit
I seems pretty punk/rock themed to me. Both their glamrock looks and the idea of discordant notes. I'm pretty sure they were referencing Wendy O. Williams.
Puzzleheaded_Race_90@reddit
No, I mean, I get that Lemmy is named after lemmy, etc....I want to figure out where the confusion between koopalings and koopa kids stems from
burnafter3ading@reddit
Oh, gotcha.
TheDukeofArgyll@reddit
It’s fine. We’re old, we don’t have to be clear.
Puzzleheaded_Race_90@reddit
Between the different shows, the games, the manuals all giving different info, and my own gray hairs, I'm ok with being confused 😆
KeyboardMunkeh@reddit
I mean... they were the bosses at the end of every world?
Puzzleheaded_Race_90@reddit
I remember them, I just somehow completely forgot they were "koopalings." I remember koopa kids
ouijahead@reddit
I think we found ourselves a Mandela effect.
luxtabula@reddit
Not a Mandela effect, just different marketing and branding between the cartoon and video game.
Puzzleheaded_Race_90@reddit
There were different sources. Game manuals back then didn't always match the games. And there were different shows. It wasn't all organized perfectly
IkariYun@reddit
Benjamin was my favorite
TimeTravelingPie@reddit
I'm pretty sure there wasn't a Benjamin because I think they were all named after musicians
Mr_Kittlesworth@reddit
True. No one named Benjamin has ever been a musician.
TimeTravelingPie@reddit
I can't think of any. Honestly, idk anyone named Benjamin other than Ben Franklin. Do you?
PJL80@reddit
Now you're just Breaking Benjamin's heart.
IkariYun@reddit
I truly cannot trust my memory anymore. Lemmy. I'm so fucking sorry, my boy. I did you wrong
Puzzleheaded_Race_90@reddit
Lemme ftw
ouijahead@reddit
Koopa Kids ?
Puzzleheaded_Race_90@reddit
The manual calls them "bowser's kids" and not koopalings. Koopa kids might be from the show, or something. I don't remember the source, because i just remember them as koopa kids
SteveEcks@reddit
Nope that's real
FoppyRETURNS@reddit
They're his kids. Bowser Jr is an oops baby.

Stuffleapugus@reddit
Is there a Bowser Jr? 🤣 One hundred percent oops baby.
BrittaUnfiltered67@reddit
I love his kids, the Koopalings. Never cared for Jr. he’s leonardo dicaprio on growing pains.
luxtabula@reddit
Lol hilarious
Ingonyama70@reddit
Like with Toadstool being Peach's surname, I like the idea of Bowser having Koopa as his surname, and the name of the tribe as a whole.
But yes. I DO cling to the headcanon that the Koopalings are his kids. Bowser Jr. is just his favorite. :p
Neither_Internal_261@reddit
I remember arguing the Koopa vs Bowser thing with a high school kid like 10 years ago and I thought I was losing my mind haha
RelevantFilm2110@reddit
He was only King Koopa on the cartoon.
queenquirk@reddit
I've gotten somewhat used to calling her Peach, but sometimes I still think Toadstool. However, I absolutely refuse to call Robotnik Dr. Eggman (different franchise but still very applicable to our generation).
My question is why hasn't Daisy been a bigger presence?
2099AD@reddit
Canonically, internationally, the mad scientist is named Ivo Robotnik. "Eggman" was an insult Sonic once called him, and it stuck. So both are officially correct.
But also, he's pretty egg-shaped, and keeps making egg-themed contraptions, so...
2099AD@reddit
She was always "Peach" in Japan. The Nintendo of America changed it to "Toadstool" for the NES and SNES games. Beginning with Super Mario 64, she became "Peach" worldwide.
I justify it by assuming Peach is her first name, and Toadstool is a family name. She IS from the Mushroom Kingdom, after all!
Traditional_Entry183@reddit
Toadstool 100%. I'm not sure when the change happened, but it was after I left Nintendo to be a Playstation guy in the late 90s. Mario Bros in the 80s to mid 90s is always what I think of.
FriedBreakfast@reddit
My brain never moved past the Super Mario Brothers Super Show.
Princess Toadstool
Mario Mario ( voiced by Captain Lou Albano ) and his brother Luigi Mario
And their nemesis King Koopa
clandahlina_redux@reddit
She was always Toadstool to me, and I was annoyed when they changed her name. I have tweens now, though, so I have had to embrace the Peach. My headcannon is her name is Princess Peach Toadstool.
limelight022@reddit
Toadstool.
On that subject, in Sonic the hedgehog I prefer dr. Robotnik instead of eggman.
Plus-Pomegranate8045@reddit
It’ll always be Toadstool to me. Ever since I always picked her in Super Mario Bros 2 even though I was a boy. She was the best to play. She could float, for God’s sake!
testmonkeyalpha@reddit
Did you know that despite her floating ability, Luigi could jump farther than she could?
LardLad00@reddit
She was much easier to control though. Luigi had that momentum.
nvmls@reddit
Luigi suuuuuucked to control. I never played him.
GarminTamzarian@reddit
Couldn't pick vegetables worth a damn either.
testmonkeyalpha@reddit
To be fair, he was better than Toadstool. Toadstool was the worst at picking up heavy items and running while carrying items. But her ease of use made her a great character to play.
Luigi was easily the worst character. Jumping higher/farther than Toad (by far worst jumper) could was rarely ever necessary. Wonky controls due to his slow falls was a big price to pay for the limited utility.
Administrative-Flan9@reddit
Luigi was good in certain situations, but it took a lot of work to learn how to use him.
testmonkeyalpha@reddit
I think there was one warp zone you needed him for? Other than wanting a challenge or liking the character there wasn't much incentive to getting good at using him.
Appropriate-Tie-6524@reddit
I think Toad was the fastest at picking up items and carrying items in SMB2 (US).
testmonkeyalpha@reddit
Yeah. Strongest and fastest. And his weak jumping almost never hampered him. By far the best all around character.
GarminTamzarian@reddit
Toad was absolutely the strongest, making him by far the fastest vegetable picker. He used to be my go-to character back in the day to maximize coins for a completion run.
Rob_LeMatic@reddit
There was only 1 level where he was the right choice. It was that sand digging level. If you did a super jump right at the beginning with Luigi, you could reach this secret area
Unapologetic_Canuck@reddit
AldusPrime@reddit
Yeah, I'd play the Princess when I wanted it to be easier and Luigi when I wanted it to be harder.
Twanlx2000@reddit
Yeah. On the 4 stages (ice) and the final boss her ability to maneuver mid-air is a game changer. Luigi would be a hot mess to use in those scenarios.
RelevantFilm2110@reddit
Better control and "hey, it's a girl like me to play as" if applicable.
Stuffleapugus@reddit
N/A and to this day, she's one of maybe two girl characters I ever picked. The Princess was definitely the best character.
BrittaUnfiltered67@reddit
Yes, and we can fly too!
Plus-Pomegranate8045@reddit
I played Luigi sometimes, but he was too wobbly and gangly. I would play Toad every so often too. The only one I never played was Mario himself. But the Princess was where it was at!
dvoecks@reddit
Princess could go a little farther, but Luigi could go a little higher. Not really enough to matter in either direction.
FoppyRETURNS@reddit
Luigi broke the game
Puzzleheaded_Race_90@reddit
Today I learned
withbellson@reddit
You had to use Luigi for 5-3 to make the super jump up to the warp pipe to get to 7-1.
It was my first experience being annoyed with a UX for not telling you on the character selection screen what level you were about to begin.
Rob_LeMatic@reddit
Also boy, Princess was the best.
Swiftie_46@reddit
I was a boy too, and always played as the Princess, but that’s because I always wanted to be a princess. 😉 46 and still not a princess. 🤣🤣😔
johnnyhammerstixx@reddit
Who the fuck told you you aren't a princess?
They were dead wrong!!
Stuffleapugus@reddit
You can be my princess.
Plus-Pomegranate8045@reddit
Never too late to achieve one’s princess dreams!
Stop_Already@reddit
My nephew always insisted as being peach when we played Wii. In 7th grade, he said he was trans - no one blinked an eye.
No, I’m not deadnaming him. When he was 18, he realized he didn’t want to go through with the transition and decided to live as a dude instead. He’s been in a relationship with a wonderful guy since and is super happy.
🥰
I absolutely love how supportive my entire family was about all this, including my boomer mom & step-dad.
realitythreek@reddit
Sorry bro, one day!
kewlacious@reddit
Team Toadstool forever, but I don’t mind Peach, as admittedly, “Toadstool” is kinda weird.
blue_suavitel@reddit
Toadstool. I’ve been thinking about this lately actually and am glad to know finally what the hell happened to her.
nopester24@reddit
toadstool
MsBlondeViking@reddit
I’ve always known she’s Princess Toadstool, but I called her Peach because kid me just liked it better lol. Bowser will always be King Koopa, even named my boy cat this.
CantFindMyWallet@reddit
I'm confused about your first sentence. You called her Peach as a kid when? By 1996 (when SM64 launched in the west), Peach was the official name. Unless you lived in Japan, you wouldn't have heard her name as Peach prior to that.
MsBlondeViking@reddit
So you’re trying to tell me I don’t know my own memories? Ok lol. Yes wasn’t officially her name until 1996, but wasn’t her first reference as Peach. Yoshis Safari in 93.
CantFindMyWallet@reddit
I'm aware of Yoshi's safari, but unless you had a Super Scope and played a game that almost no one bought, you wouldn't have encountered it until 96.
And yes, people misremember things all the time. You aren't special.
MsBlondeViking@reddit
My brother had the scope. I had the game. My still living brother still has them.

Isn’t her name Peach Toadstool? Like I thought Peach was introduced in SMB 3 when she signed her letters “Peach.”
Matshelge@reddit
Her Japanese name is Princesse Peach (ピーチ姫, Pīchi-Hime) and has been from the start. Toadstool is something from English Translation team.
Shotgun_Kid@reddit
_thwip_@reddit

Puzzleheaded_Race_90@reddit
Today I learned princess peach toadstool transitioned in the 90's...legitimately very brave
RandomRageNet@reddit
I mean Birdo did it earlier.
VVrayth@reddit
Actually, the first use of Peach outside of Japan was in Yoshi's Safari in 1993!
CantFindMyWallet@reddit
A fact known only to the 7 people who played that game
PSN-Colinp42@reddit
Yes! That’s what I was thinking of. So right, isn’t it just whether you’re calling her by first or last name?
_thwip_@reddit
I don’t think it’s a first name last name thing (although it could be). It seems more like Nintendo wanted to keep her name consistent between Japan and America so they created a short period in the mid-90s where they used both names. They haven’t really used Toadstool since.
From Wikipedia:
Miyamoto said that Peach's name came from associating princesses with girls, and when thinking about girls, he would think of pink.[31] In Japan, Peach's name has always been Princess Peach (ピーチ姫, Pīchi-Hime) since her debut in the original Super Mario Bros. in 1985. However, she was localized as "Princess Toadstool" in the English-language manual.[32] The English version of Yoshi's Safari, released in 1993, contained the first usage of the name "Peach" in the Western world,[33] though she was called Princess Toadstool in Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3, released in 1994.[34] In Super Mario 64, released in 1996, she uses both names in a letter addressed to Mario, signing it "Peach". From the 1996 game Mario Kart 64 onward, the name Peach is used in Western versions.[35]
EvenLettuce6638@reddit (OP)
Apparently Peach was her original name in Japan, changed to Toadstool for the American release in 1985.
_thwip_@reddit
She was still Toadstool in the original SMB3, but she switched over to Toadstool/Peach by Mario 64
Matshelge@reddit
As someone interested in video games as culture objects, Toadstool is a English Translation issue. She was Pīchi-Hime in Japan from the start. The update on the issue on the English side was a correction of the original mistake.

Princess Toadstool or “The Princess.” I know that Miamoto-san officially adopted the first name Peach for her back in the 2010s, so she is canonically Princess Peach Toadstool now.
I still love that Luigi’s last name is Mario and a lot of people are upset by it. I’m like, why? They are, after all, The Mario Brothers!
Mario Mario was named after the devs’ landlord in exchange for being late on rent.

Both. Mario 64 is what introduced her nickname as Peach. In the intro to the game she writes a letter to Mario and signs it "Princess Toadstool (Peach)"
ShowMeYourHappyTrail@reddit
I think I always just called her The Princess until she was Peach and then it was Princess Peach. I remember her signing her letters Princess Toadstool, I just never called her that. Same for Bowser. Not sure I ever really referred to him as King Koopa. I just remember calling him Bowser. I do remember the switch from Koopa Kids to Koopalings though. I remember thinking weren't they called something else at one point. LOL!
Legend_017@reddit
She was princess toadstool in Mario rpg. Loops was called Bowser by then.
ShowMeYourHappyTrail@reddit
Never played it until it came out for the Switch recently (and haven't played that much of it). My family had an NES and my brother got a SNES that I was barely allowed to play (either because he was a dick or I was grounded from fun things for getting a C on my report card). Looks like that game was released my junior year of high school. We rented most of our games from the video rental store in town back then.
PupLondon@reddit
I never understood why she became Peach.. shes the Princess of the Mushroom kingdom... Toadstool is a mushroom. Peach is kinda random
DrMasterBlaster@reddit
Okay, but what about Princess Daisy?!
Ingonyama70@reddit
I like the idea of Toadstool being the surname of the royal family/house that governs the Mushroom Kingdom.
So her full name is Princess Peach Toadstool.
hey_suburbia@reddit
This is how I always thought of it (without actually thinking about)
luxtabula@reddit
Her name is princess Peach Toadstool. She's princess of the Toadstool Kingdom which is a hereditary title and her given name is Peach. This is established in super Mario 64.
EvenLettuce6638@reddit (OP)
Okay, see you call that based on that game?
luxtabula@reddit
For the west, that was the jist. She gives Mario the letter saying it's cake time and drops the formality by adding her first name at the end to let him know this isn't just a formal tea time.
But yes she's always peach in Japan, but princess of the Toadstool Kingdom, which she's allowed to use in formal titles.
