Weekend mistakes

This was one of those weekends where all my garage work got done, but everything went wrong.
Got the 1972 XJ6 running again. The rebuilt choke works well! Had to tweak the carbs to actually open properly, and gouged a finger.
Then I found out that I have no brakes. Need to bleed them after rebuilding the master cylinder, so I rolled out a little and was trying to roll back in and on to ramps, stopping with parking brake. Husband thought this was a good idea, I went along with it, how hard can it be.
Bang. Straight into a pile of cardboard and junk, stopped with parking brake and by running into a spare wheel for my daily. There’s a huge dent in the under tray, but no serious damage. Add that to the body work I need next winter.
Rear brakes are bled. So much air, so much disgusting fluid. Had to use a jack and stands to get enough space under the car, which is difficult when you have inboard-mounted brakes. It’s a long messy process. So much easier with ramps.
And I burned my finger changing oil on my daily. Grabbed the hot filter, forgot that it can be hot enough to burn. I think that’s enough wrenching for one weekend.

If you’re not bleeding or burning something, can you really say you “worked on the project car?” This is me. Like every time… Good on you and keep up the good work!

Jaguar is one of the few cars I wouldn’t swap engines. I’m ok with upping the performance to the original engine anyway possible, but there’s just something cool about keeping it jaguar. Either 6 or 12. 👍

On days like that, all I can say is "it is what it is" — it's a mantra that will get you through even the most absurd bullshit on Earth.

I offered just someone $800 for a project 1972 XJ6 and they accepted ... now to pick up

Good luck! Mine was a non-runner rescued from a parking lot, and I drove 1300 miles last summer with minimal trouble. It’s worth it.

Thanks. Yeah, I've always wanted a series 1 XJ6. It needs a repaint, and I'm considering painting it black and calling it a Panther XJ6

the first two days are always the hardest on a 1-2h job

Things maybe didn’t go perfect, but you did them. That’s a lot more than a lot of people can say.
I was once pushing a Shoebox Ford out of my garage by my self. It got away from me and put a dent in my 1970 valiant. The Fords glass taillight creased the Valiant’s metal. The taillight only had a paint scuff on it for wear.

We all have those days. But that fluid looks terrible. I’d look into doing a full flush
purplegoldcat@reddit (OP)
It was coming out clear and clean by the end! Nowhere near as bad as when we first bled brakes last year. This is turning into a full flush, and then hopefully not again for a few years.

What a beauty

Bummer about the dent! I just rolled my wife's car into my own, crunched the nose cone. So, yours coulda been worse. Sounds like overall progress was made so good work
purplegoldcat@reddit (OP)
I’m so glad my husband listened when I told him not to stand behind the car at all! It could’ve been so much worse.
MatchesMX12@reddit
You have a husband that listens? My wife wants to know where you found him and if there were any left

Literally dragged a LT1 swapped '85 XJ-6 home today and was about to post about it when I saw yours. Jaguar team ASSEMBLE!

Oh cool! Can’t help at all with the engine, mine is the original. Good luck with any remaining Lucas wiring. Jaguars are awesome cheap project cars!

My E-type (2+2) had access panels behind the back seat to access the rear brakes - not the same on the Xj?
purplegoldcat@reddit (OP)
Sadly no! Have to get on ramps, or a lift, or jack up. We definitely need a lift after this.
