How powerful "Balkania" would be like?

let's imagine a scenario which all the balkans counties unite as one in a state called "Balkania", how powerful that state could be?

Just no, big NO.

We got you on the civil wars. That's our thing. And ee can cover the corruption pretty well... Good thing we have all those Romanians for the basketball.
Ha55aN1337@reddit
Hold on! We have civil war, corruption and great basketball players in Slovenia also! All thanks to our Serbian community!
SuspiciousShock8294@reddit
Huh... So there is a reason they call you guys ,,Alpski Srbi", after all.
(Found that phrase online, i think it was used by a Croatian person... Which only made laugh even harder š)

Croatians are just jealous because we only have serbian politicians and athletes, and not croatian ones!

I dunno man. I love visiting Slovenia. Everything seems so clean and orderly. The nature is, obviously, stunning. Also, i always appreciated the "leftfield" cultural stuff that came out of Slovenia, like Laibach or Miladojka Youneed. Everything, kinda, "clicks", from my perspective at least.
Friendly advice... If you want to keep it that way, keep "them" and "us" at a friendly distance. :)

So, if we ignore how batshit insanely unstable this state would be, it has some nice perks.
It sits on some decent resource deposits and has plenty of people and good tourism potential.
It sbuggest strenght however is its geigraphic position. The Balkan region is located between 3 seas and has influence in all 3 of them.
It also stands between centeal Europe and Italy and Turkey.Ā
Overall i think the state would see massive development in the first few decades after unification because it would have leverage and a large internal market.
Basically Turkey on steroids.

Idk about steroids, we would still have a larger population and probably roughly the same size militarily.
It would definitely be a bit wealthier though.
STRYKERECLYPSE@reddit
Actially just Turkey if we are to see geographycal , size , population, resource , economycal , abd military size

Would be pretty powerful in the first 2 seconds, then it would be very unstable during 3rd, 4th and 5th seconds and finally at the 6th second, it would be no more

Actually, you're quite wrong, the Turks unified the Balkans for centuries.

Beautiful-Dish-6275@reddit
You cant really calculate it lile that, at the moment the economies are fragmented, if they hypothetically unified they would experience a massive growth thanks to many factors like necoming one giant market instead of many small ones.
An 80 mil people market is a lot better environment for companies to grow.
Born_Name_6549@reddit
That would give us some nice economic growth where romania dominates the market with greece as their lapdog. Serbs will be confused becuase they'll think all the companies will be in belgrade, croats and slovenes will continue to try and be specialized boutiques, and albanian criminals will get so rich that they'll keep el chapo's son in a cage
Beautiful-Dish-6275@reddit
All of those things are happening in countries like USA too. Still have economic growth.
Like i will give you an example, a joint balkan stock exchange would be a game changer for a lot of these countries, it would have a lot more capital to invest than these 10 exchanges seoarated and it would benefit the tech and financial sector a lot.
Thats just 1 benefit, there are many other. For economy its often very simple big=good.
JRJenss@reddit
That's only possible with one national identity. We weren't capable of establishing such a thing even among the south slavs speaking the same frickin language.
stevosteve@reddit
I think culturally we're very close. At least as far as I've met other people from Balkan countries. I'm half Greek half Bulgarian and live abroad.
The biggest issue would be language. We all communicate with each other in English, which all of us speak in distinct broken ways. Maybe the Bulgarians I've met are probably the best English speakers of all of us. But still
JRJenss@reddit
Dude, as I've said; we couldn't establish the same national identity among the Yugoslavs but you expect us to do it with non-slavoc Greeks, Hungarians, Romanains and Albanians??
Scandinavians are culturally even closer than the Yugoslavs - basically the same language, writing system, religion...and even they couldn't form one nation. I honestly wonder how tf has Croatia itself managed a unification of its 3 states, given how different we are ourselves.
Beautiful-Dish-6275@reddit
Tbh the whole difference between people from different regions is overhyped. Like when peple say Zagreb and Rijeka are central European and Split and Osijek balkan, idk.
Im in Zagreb as a student and there are people from all over Croatia here as well as Herzegovina and we all seem to be pretty similar mentality wise.
Names-Are-Confusing@reddit
Youāre definitely not. Iām Zagreb-born, my parents are too, and my grandparents are from the region, the mentality differences between Zagreb and Herzegovina are insane lol, this is just a funny take. And itās understandable because theyāve been separate for 1000 years. Culturally, historically and genetically Zagreb and Rijeka are closer to Slovenia and Hungary than Bosnia, Serbia or even some other parts of Croatia. And you can definitely quickly tell apart a native Zagreb/Croatian person and a Herzegovinian.
Beautiful-Dish-6275@reddit
Im from Split bro.
Names-Are-Confusing@reddit
Ako govoris striktno o mentalitetu, onda oke, donekle bih prihvatio.
stevosteve@reddit
I mean we do have EU as an example of nations working closely together.
But yeah in general we agree. It's definitely hard to unite people and far too easy to get them to stab each other
JRJenss@reddit
Yeah, and I would even push against the language being the main problem. Uniting people is hard because in order for all of them to adopt the same identity, they first need to adopt the same mythology of self, because that's all a nation is - it's a story, an abstract narrative most people believe in. First Yugoslavia actually had a good chance on the Croatian side, mainly because the Croatian national revival wasn't led by illiterate Croats but mainly by croatized and urban German, Czech and Slovakian intelligentsia, who already had a Yugoslav idea in mind with their Illyria myth. Ethnic Croats were primitive nationalists like everyone else in the Balkans. The problem was, even this elite wouldn't accept anything below the bare minimum of autonomy and our own parliament we'd already had in AU. Serbs immediately had other ideas as we know, so that country died before it even had a chance to develop its own mythology and the result was a Croatian nationalist counterstrike right at the time of the rise of Fascism. This led from viewing the Serbs as slavic brothers, to putting them into death camps within 20+ years.
After that quick genocide which caused a generational trauma in Serbs, 100x worse than anything they felt against the Turks, nothing has ever been the same nor will it be any time soon. The second Yugoslavia had been held together only as a Cold War dictatorial cordon sanitaire between East and West. As soon as the Berlin Wall fell we all knew another war was coming. So, we need to put these delusions aside and first need at least a couple of generations just to re-learn how to be good neighbors.
AdministrativeAd9787@reddit
Serb here, would love to see this once in my lifetime. A thriving balkan culture. Let bygones be bygones. Looking forward without cementing some historical sites as our "future". I mean, who would be all kinds of fucked up if every country said "we only accept borders defined by the peak size of our country". Think macedonia, germany, sweden (even they had an empire at a time), britain, france etc etc. There would be a neverending war. Why are we so fucking stubborn? lol
Born_Name_6549@reddit
USA states are legally not allowed to boycott each other in any matter of trade. This means that a more competitive company in new york can steamroll their competitors in nebraska and nobody can do anything about it. Do you think that type of shit would be accepted in the balkans? Even in western europe that's a hot topic.
Beautiful-Dish-6275@reddit
You are touching on instabilty, and thats true, this state wouldnt survive 10 seconds lets not kid ourselves.
I was speaking from the economic persoective, politics change the situation.
Born_Name_6549@reddit
Ok let's look at it from a purely economic perspective. Geographically, it's not a very good position (no, being the gate between europe and asia doesn't count for shit anymore). The mountainous terrain makes railways harder to build and more expensive, the only logistical advantage is greece being close to the suez and the access to the danube, which again benefits romania most of all. When it comes to natural resources, black soil wpuld mostly be in romania, minerals are more spread so the rest could make something out of that. Capital would also be based on bucharest and athens since they have the highest populations. It all boils down to the same situation no matter how you cut it
zpetar@reddit
It wouldn't be so hard to make good railway from Thessaloniki to Belgrade. From there it could be easily branched to other northern parts. North of Sava and Danube it's mostly flat land
Beautiful-Dish-6275@reddit
Its the most logical country for ships from suez to sail if they want to drop their cargo anywhere east of Germany/Italy.
The terrain does suck for railways, but infuence over 3 seas andnthe bosporus as well as being between massive markets large markets like Germany Poland Ukraine Italy and Turkey is very useful.
Location is good, geography is bad imo.
Born_Name_6549@reddit
Influence over 3 seas is one hell of a stretch. This suggests that balkania just gets to swing its dick in the black, agean, and adriatic seas. Russia and turkey would never accept this, and italy wouldn't just roll over either. And influence over the bosphorous? Lmao you're asking for war.
vladedivac12@reddit
It gives legs to theories that the West rather see us divided and will add fuel to the fire when there's an opportunity
mao_dze_dun@reddit
And as usual, Bulgaria will be completely forgotten even though we're dead in the middle of it all. Your post quite literally proves it. We're the Balkans' ugly duckling :D
Born_Name_6549@reddit
I actually really wanted to mention bulgaria but in this scenario I can only guess that being surrounded by romania and greece (which would be dominating this union) bulgaria would get fucked by both so hard that it becomes irrelevant
Burlotier@reddit
Since they are one hypothetical country no one is a lapdog of the other. Also Greece has the best navy compared to all of the other Balkan countries and largest merchant ship fleet in the world , so it isnāt this one sided
Born_Name_6549@reddit
That's only true for overseas exports. But most of the trade with hypothetical balkania would be with germany/poland/italy/turkey. Greek ships would still mostly work for western companies that want to move their goods to and from asia, domestically that doesn't cpunt for much outside of greece itself.
Burlotier@reddit
With Greece Balkania would have global presence and have bigger potential . Also it becomes even stronger if Turkey attacks and by winning a war it gets Constantinople .
Again , Greece has the biggest merchant ship fleet in the world and navy in the Balkans, even if Romania had production better than Russia and US combined, it would be bottlenecked , with Greece it can transport its goods across the globe . What Greece lacks though is land and home industry , which Romania has . So it would be a mutual relationship .
The only countries that would be considered āweakāor harmful are Skopje and Albania. The former has beef with both Greece and Bulgaria and the latter is Albania , the only country in the region that is more corrupt than the Greek government and steals more than even the most stereotypical Romanian and competes with Turkey on illegal bussiness and human rights violations . Their identity was made to control and bottleneck the Balkan big players and give control to outside great powers .
Born_Name_6549@reddit
As soon as I read this I knew you were going to say some really stupid shit. And you sure as hell didn't disappoint lmao.
Burlotier@reddit
Stating a possible scenario and development , I apologise if I disturbed you but we are talking about fantastical and real world geopolitics and turkey isnāt a stable neighbour to say the least.
Born_Name_6549@reddit
Ah yes, and albania will destroy everything
Burlotier@reddit
Albania has a drug empire and perhaps the most corrupt government in the Balkans . The balkania country in order to keep existing and expand needs to have unity and as little corruption as possible whilst also maintaining good relations with the world. Albania as of now would be at best a sinkhole or at worst destroy the country and cripple the countries that entered the process .
It is like Micah in read dead redemption 2 , sure he isnāt a president or king or the deadliest mercenary but his character and motivations are what escalated to the catastrophe to the group.
Born_Name_6549@reddit
Lmao yes, totally gpnna be albania that derails everything. Not serbs losing their shit when bucharest is chosen as the capital instead of holy magic belgrade, or greeks lying about finances again and blaming everyone when some little belgian accountant audits them
Burlotier@reddit
With the current geopolitical situation , yes , Albania would derail everything. Serbia and Greece are already good allies and have improved relations with Bulgaria compared to previously. The economic crisis is more how Greece was crucified to bail out German and French banks (as seen from the Epstein files) .
Albania is like the chaos undivided of the stereotypes in the region and Skopje has tensions with Bulgaria and Greece and it threatens Serbia (as the US planned so).
Born_Name_6549@reddit

Why did Yugoslavia break up to begin with? That kind of tensions has led to literal wars. We don't want any of that, and I doubt any ex-Yugo countries would want any of that. Also what's wrong with joining the EU, doesn't that achieve essentially the same thing, minus the wars?
On the other hand, I find it funny that a union with Moldova is actually possible for Romania yet it's not included in this map.

Well, if you suddenly force these nations to unite then sure, I agree with everyone else. It would probably end in another civil war.
If somehow everyone agrees to unite, then probably not too bad. It would be, however like a mini EU. Just a bunch of borderless cultures that don't have too much in common. Like, sure, you could travel from Serbia to Greece without a passport, but it would still feel like another country because of the culture and language difference.

Add Turkey to the mix for total control of the Mediterranean and we would be unstoppable. Let's get some politicians to back this plan š

Just the Ottoman/Byzantine Empire without the Middle East then.
Patient-Surprise3867@reddit
Well both of them were powerful empires, so it sounds good to me š

Are we headed back into the USSR? Like this gives Iron Curtain vibes. Not saying that economically we weren't a lot stronger, at least on paper, but..
mosa_kota@reddit
The world would not survive the breakup of Balkania
afewnameslater@reddit
Not really that powerful, unless the focus on oil and gold extraction. Bulgaria and Romania + some of Serbia have precious metals and Oil (fracking) and Greece has the maritime hubs to export. Combined with uranium and Cobalt-Tin mines that can secure the rare metals for added value manufacturing as well as ~25 million population the country would actually be a serious player in Europe. They would still need Turkey and Ukraine as major trade partners and would still require full EU integration but yeah sounds good.

Instant civil war and unimaginable corruption with new conspiracy theories jumping up every minute. Other than that we could produce so much raki for the world. I believe that exports would just skyrocket and the country would be rich. Greek products along with yougoslavian minds would be hard to counter.

It would be a ⬠black hole, money comes in and nothing comes out

It wouldnāt be to powerful and it wouldnāt last because thereās too much inequality within that hypothetical empire. Stuff like this makes sense when youāre in a sort of way homogeneous either culturally or economically. It would be a shit show and not an entertaining one either.

Just saw the documentary about the Yugoslav national basketball team that won the European championship 3 days after the country had started to dissolve. It won't end well.
Now, I do think that it's possible for Greece, Bulgaria and Romania, specifically, to figure something out. We've mostly sorted out our historical grievances and even our nationalists don't have much to complain about. All three countries have been part of the EU for a long time. People have rally gotten used to the concept of open borders.
I am not saying federation per se, obviously. But deep economical, military and political collaboration - sure. Something like a mini Balkan EU, where the three countries combine forces to have more weight geopolitically. I wouldn't mind that at all.
RuleMany2900@reddit

what about Turkish Trakya ? why exlcuded?
Glass-Evidence-4849@reddit
Ok since we're theorycrafting, it has the potential to be on par with the UK/Germany.
Here's the hard thing, uniting all those little nations under a single flag. IMO it would require some sort of China-lite dictatorship, erasing state/ethnic identity, boosting production in the north and keeping tourism in the mediterannian, and on top of that developing nuclear weapons if you don't want USA/China/Russia meddling in internal national affairs because neither of them would approve of such a country.
So pretty much impossible, like it or not, EU is our best shot at prosperity while uniting our forces to fight any sort of potential threat.
kowalsky9999@reddit
The combined GDP of all the Balkan countries is more or less 1 trillion, while Germany is over 4 trillion, so it's more on a par with the Netherlands and Poland.
Glass-Evidence-4849@reddit
Sure, at this point, with shitty leadership and insane corruption it's 1/4 of the way to be Germany. That's not the point of my comment though.
In ideal circumstances it would absolutely be a world power, idk why that concept is so hard to grasp.
ACM96@reddit
Let's set aside our political differences, without Turkey as a driving force, there is no hope for Balkania!
defketron@reddit
Somewhat less powerful than Spain, but more powerful than Poland. A top 20 world economy.
Zrva_V3@reddit
Militarily it would definitely be more powerful than Spain. Even we are more powerful than Spain by ourselves. They don't spend much on military.
defketron@reddit
I was mostly thinking economically. Turkey does have a military budget comparable to all Balkania states combined.
VladimirLogos@reddit
It would surpass everyone except Germany and France economically.
Zrva_V3@reddit
If it didn't just collapse immediately, then it would be around Turkey's level all things considered, albeit slightly wealthier.
Sotyka94@reddit
If you put together a bunch of struggling, corrupt nations, it does not become good suddenly. You just have MORE struggles and more corruption.

wonder if we can share the debt with other balkan countries, then when inevitable civil war between ex yugoslav counries break out, we can come out stronger.
This union might make sense for Greece tbh.

New_Parking9991@reddit
dont worry bro just put mitsotakis as finance minister,we will take care of balkania economy.
Glavurdan@reddit
It could only work as a temporary alliance against a foreign power, and even then we'd probably both fight a civil war and a war vs the adversary like we did in Yugoslavia back in WW2
But we would come on top in the end, cuz Balkans are based chads

It could happen, but it would require the complete and total termination of all nationalist movements in every country. Beautiful-Dish-6275@reddit
Probably ahahha. U heard they are xenophobic as shit. Second only to the Swiss.
ErblinBeqiri@reddit
not at all, they are very friendly on a national average, never seen any memes comparing dutch hospitality to german ones? i noticed it myself while visiting austria in this case, very private hostile people compared to dutch
Beautiful-Dish-6275@reddit
Interesting, idk maybe it died down in recsnt years, i know a lot of Poles and Romanians used to complain about the Dutch specifically being xeno towards them.
ErblinBeqiri@reddit
there is racism like that, of course, but thats not exactly the same as xenophobia. when you bring up poles and romanians, there is no problem with their culture being brought here, its more of a socio-economic angle to that. if poles or romanians come here as tourists, just to see the sights, dutch are more than welcome to associate with them. cant say the same with germans/austrians and swiss i guess, who are much more reserved and untrusting. you can wave at a dutch guy and he will wave back, the german guy will look at you like "who is this person waving to me, why is he looking at me?"
Beautiful-Dish-6275@reddit
Ohh, nice. Thanks for letting me know. Tho if i ever move from Cro its still probably gonna be Denmark or Sweden.
