Do wraps damage a car?

I know nothing about wraps but really dislike white/gray/black cars but that seems to be all they sell now. I am in the market for something used so I can’t order. Someone suggested getting it wrapped, I have no idea how expensive it would be or how long they last and if they damage the paint.
Looking at a 3 year old car, plan to keep for 5+ and finding white cars are often the cheapest in the used market.

wrapped mine with carching (Malaysia), so far after 2 years no issue.

You could get a car with a nice color just have to look more. Like my car is green and it’s sweet.

Me too!
Monster51915@reddit
What car do you got?
XBOX-BAD31415@reddit
Porsche Macan GTS in Python Green! You?
Monster51915@reddit
Cool, definitely a higher end vehicle than mine but green is still always awesome. Subaru Crosstrek Sport in Alpine Green. The yellow accents and green look sweet.

Have seen a few of those around (but not many with your color scheme.) Nice choice, they look good!

very few American cars are available in green. Not offered on the cars I am looking at (Crown Signia, X1, X3)
A dark green almost black is available on the Lexus NX but I don’t love the car itself
Monster51915@reddit
Yeah, green is rare but that’s what’s nice.
I’ve got it in a 2024 Subaru Crosstrek sport so I think it looks sweet.

Infiniti’s Emerald Green is gorgeous

If I can buy 3ft by 8ft vinyl for $100 and wrapping isn't all that difficult, how does it cost $2500?

Seems like most people don’t know much here about wraps.
I worked at a wrap shop for like 8 years so here you go:
No they don’t damage paint, they protect it (to a degree), but if the paint is already failing, is poorly adhered, or has damage, when removing the wrap it can definitely take that paint off.
You don’t need to wash it every week that’s insane, once a month is totally fine with a quality wrap and use a good detail spray in between to keep the wrap “conditioned.” Definitely avoid automatic car washes and getting too close with a pressure washer, but same goes for paint.
Less UV exposure the better, just like paint.
Only have a wrap installed by a legit, reputable shop, ideally certified by 3M, Avery, Hexis, etc. and ensure they provide a warranty on installation.
Good quality wraps installed correctly can easily last 5-7 years, and I’ve seen wraps well over that that still looked great.
If you have a regular sedan, expect to pay $3k on the low end, and SUV or truck can easily be $5k, but it all depends on where you’re located and how experienced the installers are. If you’re paying under $2500 it’s probably going to be garbage.
Colored PPF is still a better product (better finish, better durability and paint protection, etc) but more expensive.
Happy to answer any other questions.

Yes. The adhesive destroys the clearcoat.

White, black, or gray, the 3 most boring car colors available.
TheAN1MAL@reddit
I like black and white. Simple Man here.
SmallHeath555@reddit (OP)
you and Henry Ford would get along!
stchman@reddit
Black it too difficult to keep clean, white is a rental car color like silver.
TheAN1MAL@reddit
Totally agree
SmallHeath555@reddit (OP)
I agree which is why I don’t want one, but the only other colors most cars come in are red and blue, which are fine but I like color in my life! Champagne gold, sparkly teal, emerald green, I miss color!
stchman@reddit
I actually prefer metallic red which you can still get.
SmallHeath555@reddit (OP)
been driving metallic red for over a decade and metallic blue for 9 years before that. Would kill for a metallic green
stchman@reddit
Honda has an Ash Green Metallic on some of their SUVs.
Living_Ear5682@reddit
Not at all. I was getting tired of black, too, so I bought a roll online and had a professional install it for me. It looks great, and I’ve heard it should last 6–7 years.
Dry_Engineering7740@reddit
No, wraps don't damage paint when done properly. Get a quality wrap from a reputable shop, and it'll protect your paint while giving you the color you want. Perfect for your used white car plan.
ABadMothafuka@reddit
Yes. And never buy a 2nd hand car that is wrapped. You never know how bad the original paint looks under
ShatterProofDick@reddit
Better that average It's trash and the wrap is failing.
No one wraps a car then sells it unless their life has experienced immediate implosion and they're liquidating everything.
EdwardPotatoHand@reddit
Remember, if you get your car wrapped, you need to take care of that wrap. Ideally you washing weekly, no more than once every 2 weeks in good conditions.. also you can’t put it thru a machine.
ipodaholicdan@reddit
Jesus that’s a lot more upkeep than I expected, also explains why every wrapped car I’ve seen is pristine. Can wraps hold up in touchless car washes?
ShatterProofDick@reddit
Yeah those won't kill it.
EdwardPotatoHand@reddit
Touchless is okay.
SmallHeath555@reddit (OP)
good to know, doesn’t sound like a wrap is a choice for me
grumpy0282@reddit
ppl put them on very expensive cars so im guessing no
wraps are not cheap
ringRunners@reddit
Yes
ConsequenceNational4@reddit
Yes, they can...it all depends on how you take thrm off and how good thr paint was before it was installed. ( ive wrapped.my car two times).
Colonel460@reddit
Get some Clay Smith Cam’s Mr. Horsepower decals ( Looks like an extremely angry woodpecker smoking a stubby cigar ) . Not only is it cool but it will help you find your white car in the parking lot .
ShatterProofDick@reddit
If the car already has deep scratches or dents a wrap will not help.
A good wrap will cost at least $2,500 and that's a very conservative estimate, likely more than that.
A good wrap should last 5 years before it can potentially damage the paint underneath. Bear in mind you'll have to pay to have the wrap professionally removed.
Wrapped cars must be treated differently. Drive through car washes can and will jack them up.
Because of all of the above reasons I have never wrapped (or even worse plasti dipped) any of my cars, but have friends who have done their rides.

thanks for the info

Cheers

Damage the car not really. Wraps have a shelf life 5/6 years maybe if it’s well taken care of. Once the wrap gets old it’s considerably harder to remove that is where damage can happen. Removing old wrap is a pain on the ass and may require tools which can damage the paint. Aside from that if the paint is new and looks good it’ll protect it. There is also new Ppf wraps in color that last longer and protect the car better but they do cost even more.
