Do you like bus cockpits too?

Crazy buses need boxes now
dirty_hooker@reddit
I’m happy about it. There’s plenty of videos on the web of drivers being attacked. At the same time, I’m happy for my own air supply.
Fabulous_Force9868@reddit
I think it's sad how our societies have become. Even here in n Canada they have em.

"The transition from that massive, horizontal steering wheel to the modern fare box setup is such a classic transit aesthetic—it’s like a workplace and a command center all in one."
MuffinTrucker@reddit
Not gunna lie. I have an unhealthy infatuation with busses. All busses. Coach, school, city, old and new! If I wasn’t in love with my current job I’d try to find a bus job.
Also, I wish all rigs had that oversized plastic steering wheel! They’re just the tits!
Mystery_Chaser@reddit
I have driven just about every kind of bus. These steering wheels are only comfortable for very overweight people. Not insulting you if that's your situation. I however I am a petite individual. So, I have to like really hunch over on that steering wheel. I hate it. I need to pull the steering wheel down so I can safely be 10 and two. Personally, I prefer driving a smaller bus. I used to really like driving the big buses. Now, I've driven them all. So I'm just happy driving a smaller bus. I'm making the same amount of money as a big bus.
MuffinTrucker@reddit
Yeah I’m 6’4” and almost every truck, car, semi are too small for me. I pretty much pull the seats out of every vehicle I run and set it back 3-4” then I’ll get the leg room I need.
Mystery_Chaser@reddit
Just when I thought it was tough being small. I suppose being really tall would be even harder.
MuffinTrucker@reddit
Not gunna lie, it can suck.
Onphone_irl@reddit
can you delve I to why you think? I have a bit of love for them myself but want to hear your reasons
MuffinTrucker@reddit
I hate the big goofy rubber steering wheels, I’m not a fan of having the switches on the wheel, looks too cluttered and way to complicated to work on. This style wheel: one electric wire to the horn. Easy and simple.
TraditionalPitch3320@reddit (OP)
Fair! Buses are so cool.
blessed_rising_jah@reddit
Indeed! This is where my CDL journey began. Only drove Gilligs. Always wanted to try out New Flyers, but I left by the time my previous employer started getting them.
Mystery_Chaser@reddit
The flowers are fun for like two trips and then you get over it. You didn't miss anything.
TraditionalPitch3320@reddit (OP)
This bus was a Gillig. We have New Flyer for our articulated buses and we have MCI coach buses.
blessed_rising_jah@reddit
Oh nice, thought the interior looked fairly familiar. Man I miss those 60 footers. To me they were a lot easier to maneuver in and around the city. Those MCI coaches are pretty much those greyhound busses right? Those look very intimidating to drive.
TraditionalPitch3320@reddit (OP)
Honestly, the MCI coaches are my favorite of the fleet. Such a smooth ride. The New Flyer articulated buses second, Gilligs last. Yes, they're basically Greyhound coaches but no bathroom. Only hard part about driving them is the width. And I guess they do turn worse than the 40' Gilligs.
Capt_Cyral@reddit
Too closterphobic for me
Mystery_Chaser@reddit
Agree. I wish my boss had a rear shield. Passengers love to sit behind the bus driver when they have a cold. I get to feel them coughing and sneezing all over my neck. I have to roll down my window just to blow the germs back on them.
TraditionalPitch3320@reddit (OP)
Sorry for the censoring, I had to cover identifying information
BrattySubSam@reddit
How do you like driving a bus? I have a chance to move to city bus driver if I get my passenger endorsement but don’t know that I like people that much
Mystery_Chaser@reddit
It's easy. You just put in one earbud and tuna out. Play some nice audiobooks, learn foreign language. It's easy
TraditionalPitch3320@reddit (OP)
Its nice. Home every day, plenty of overtime. Paid hourly, so I actually get overtime pay.
warwgn@reddit
How does the cargo treat you. I bet there’s been a few days.
Black000betty@reddit
99% of the time they aren't any problem. Self loading and unloading, no hazmat, no issues. Often friendly in a polite and minimal way.
1% of the time, they are some form of problem. The police supported me pretty well in my area, when required. Usually not required, 99% of problems are resolved by direct communication and an occassional stern voice with threat of removal.
Maybe once or twice a year, I'm glad to have had some prior medical training. Highly recommend getting CPR/1st aid cert.
Bus driving honestly doesn't suck. Better pay, schedule and benefits than a ton of driving jobs.
dirty_hooker@reddit
Mixed bag from my seat. I run a bus in a tourist town. Most of the locals are just peacefully commuting. Some are rowdy when spirited but usually never in the direction of the driver. There’s definitely some trouble makers and people with limited access to showers. The tourists haven’t been on a bus since middle school so they need some hand holding. Expect to answer the same question a dozen times a shift which usually involve confirming that the bus is going where the head-sign says it’s going.
Hours can be rough; especially before you get any seniority. It helps if you view it as a civic duty. You’re alleviating some traffic / parking / fuel use while providing safe transportation to those that need it.
You will catch every type of cold and flu. FWIW, I like the driver barrier. You only need to start typing “bus driver attacked…” before an endless list of videos pop up. I also like my private bubble of air while the occupants in the back expel lung cheese and every other bodily fluid on each other.
TraditionalPitch3320@reddit (OP)
I'm brand new and get tons of overtime lol
dirty_hooker@reddit
I mean that it’s not uncommon to be starting or ending your shift at 3:30 am. For guys that are normally delivering crates during business hours, that’s a wild shift.
TraditionalPitch3320@reddit (OP)
Fair. I start super early usually and when I do, I'm usually off work by like 3pm.
TraditionalPitch3320@reddit (OP)
As with any cargo, I'm sure. Most days are fine. I've only ever had to kick two passengers off.
Environmental-Pear40@reddit
Idk why anyone would get a CDL and go " You know what I also want to deal with people all day" perfect introvert job, ruined.
bigmac22077@reddit
I get a pension, make 65k a year only work 170 days, get paid full time on my downtime, health insurance, pto, and there’s no physical labor, I’m home every night, work 6 hours a day. Unless I wanted more money I can’t understand why I wouldn’t drive busses.
Environmental-Pear40@reddit
Well, I know there are local guys with equivalent setups I don't believe any of that is particularly unique to buses. My only issue with driving a bus is having to interact with people, 🤢.
One of my main reasons for getting a CDL in the first place was so that I wouldn't have to interact with people on a day-to-day basis. I just think it is funny how different people can be, yet follow similar paths. Though, I also prefer otr But there are OTR equivalent bus drivers, I think.
Mystery_Chaser@reddit
Yes, they're called motorcoach drivers. They don't make more than 50 a year. They don't have the same rights as truck drivers. They have 14 hours a day max. 16 if weather conditions are horrific. They usually have really shitty benefits if any at all. I was a coach Driver for a short time. It sucked.
bigmac22077@reddit
You do have to interact with people on a day to day basis. You have to deal with receiving. Have do deal with other drivers at the pumps. Have to find places to sleep, and shitty neighbors next to you.
How many days do you only work 6 hours including down time? How many weeks out of the year do you work? Because 170 days is just under half the year, I work not even half a year, 6 hour days, and still collect 65k. My free time is worth more than any otr driver makes.
Mystery_Chaser@reddit
Excellent for you! That's a pretty sweet gig. I guess you're not gonna tell us where we can all go apply?
TraditionalPitch3320@reddit (OP)
Pays almost $29 an hour plus overtime and double time if I volunteer my day off. And they put me through CDL school while paying me to do it.
Mystery_Chaser@reddit
It was a good call. You don't have to work there forever. Just two years and then you can find a better job 29 an hour to start is pretty great. I started at 23.
Environmental-Pear40@reddit
To each their own. That's just not enough for me to be around people.
TraditionalPitch3320@reddit (OP)
My last paycheck was $2500 after tax and insurance for two weeks. Pretty good.
Environmental-Pear40@reddit
Y'all get paid biweekly?
TraditionalPitch3320@reddit (OP)
Yup. Government work.
Environmental-Pear40@reddit
Oh, My mom works for the state of Florida. You get decent benefits from what I hear. Tho I've also heard that You can make better money at like Greyhound then you can work in for like a municipality. There's some Greyhound driver on YouTube I've seen a few of their things.
NioNoah@reddit
Because home daily to be with my fiance, pay is 33.19 starting with a two year progression to 39.49, some of the best benefits I've seen, and I'm not really an introvert, working as a FedEx driver half my day is in my discord server with my fiance and friends and I have a bad habit to stay at my business stops for too long talking.
Environmental-Pear40@reddit
I didn't question why local drivers exist.
Mystery_Chaser@reddit
I hate that steering wheel. I always need to adjust my steering wheel down. I don't like driving with my arms like that.
SovereignOfSelf7@reddit
As a local trucker bus drivers are always a holes to me on the road lol
TraditionalPitch3320@reddit (OP)
Maybe stop parking in bus lanes then lol
dirty_hooker@reddit
I swear I could break the doors off an uber some days.
TraditionalPitch3320@reddit (OP)
Same. Ever get the intrusive thought to just gun it through their doors? I definitely haven't thought about it. Not at all.
dirty_hooker@reddit
Less that. More that a career in the automotive industry has taught me that wile doors are pretty good at stopping an impact into the cab, they have very little strength being pulled away from the cab. If you grab the upper part of the window support and put your knee into the waistline of the door, you can absolutely peel it back to where it would need replacing.
scottiethegoonie@reddit
Some of the city bus drivers are fully tilted but I understand why. We can hog a left lane on a city street and get in early because we need to make a left. These guys *always* have to get to the right at stops and then merge right back into traffic against 4 wheelers.
stevenmacarthur@reddit
I drove transit for just shy of ten years, and I dealt with some of the shittiest people that ever walked the face of the Earth...
...but enough about Management.
West-Raccoon-2043@reddit
These doors jam so easy tho and that shield for the gas too. That’s one of the reasons why I went back to trucking
TraditionalPitch3320@reddit (OP)
I rarely kneel it. But yeah, I wish that switch had the same extension thing as we have on the switch for our hazards. Can't say I've ever had a door jam.
driver004@reddit
Your like the judge Dredd version of driving
bigblackglock17@reddit
I was thinking “Death Proof” 2007.
1Stack_Mack@reddit
😂
driver004@reddit
Seriously back in 2015 I was a boot driver right out of the army taking a greyhound to Chicago to take a shady ass job and I saw the driver both get assaulted at a stop, and floor both of them by the time me and a few other passengers managed to get off fully willing to aid in the defense. The dude was big sure but it was still something else when he said yeah that happens half the time like straight matter of factly
TraditionalPitch3320@reddit (OP)
Greyhound is to busing as Waffle House is to restaurants
driver004@reddit
I just wish they went to flat bunk plank seating
1Stack_Mack@reddit
Army here also. 12B. I've had enough Greyhound to last a lifetime
driver004@reddit
11b with a string of identifiers here
1Stack_Mack@reddit
Hell yeah bro! We cleared the wire for you! You're welcome
driver004@reddit
Pfft I’ve personally attached the cable that pulled your weird ass Vic’s out some bull shit and away from the local rednecks such that the meat is now safely out of its can and wrapped in the smooth velvet of morphine and evac.
Don’t get me wrong you lot are insane and we love you for it, but we start biting each other too much how many teeth may I ask would we have left for something really fun
1Stack_Mack@reddit
Hahahaha! Smooth velvet of morphine! 🤣 Combat medic also, I'm guessing?
driver004@reddit
No but I was back in the time CLS included more than glorified elastic band aids and saline IVs as well. I was a mere infantryman for most of my time in before my forced retirement
1Stack_Mack@reddit
Well, thank you for your service. I do miss those days when I was a younger man. As a 12B, the thing I miss the most is the smell of the C4. It is very distinctive and I'll never forget it.
driver004@reddit
You can literally make it at home, what you never insisted on sapper?
1Stack_Mack@reddit
I'm well aware. I never went to Sapper school. I had a back injury 3 months before I was supposed to go. My neighbors enjoy me on the 4th of July though. But after 9/11, there are a lot more questions asked when purchasing cannon fuse and black powder in quanity
driver004@reddit
Why you gotta buy black powder yo, and cannon fuse? Man you shoulda went to sapper.
It was unfair and weird I did, but I was PSD for a 2 star at the time and he was big on sending his guys to schools so I seized the opportunity
1Stack_Mack@reddit
My back injury forced me out before sapper school. And cannon fuse and black powder is way easier to make little "fireworks". I tumbled off the back of a 977 command track and landed on a generator. That was in 2000. 26 years later, and my back is still not right
driver004@reddit
Sorry to hear that. But if you think black powder isn’t a pretty easily accessible explosive extending to this day than id like to introduce you to the African Sahel
1Stack_Mack@reddit
When purchasing powder with cannon fuse, sometimes it raises eyebrows
driver004@reddit
There’s a warehouse in Virginia next to DC where you can get way more fun chemicals in bulk
1Stack_Mack@reddit
And BTW, I have fun with the household chemicals also. Ever blow up flour? That's pretty wild!
driver004@reddit
Thing is you need an entire elevators worth to do anything fun
1Stack_Mack@reddit
True, but it lights up nice at night
driver004@reddit
Pfft 50:50 by mass German alumina and potassium chlorate
1Stack_Mack@reddit
This is a language I understand
driver004@reddit
But have you understood its context in a MOUT op plan
1Stack_Mack@reddit
Urban is the way
driver004@reddit
So no :P
1Stack_Mack@reddit
Shocking you say that, I'm heading to Northern VA tomorrow night. Leesburg area
