There's no chance that's speed tape, right? Surely it's metal plates or something?
MorastK@reddit
Most likely scab patches. Speed tape won’t allow for the aircraft to pressurize.
Ustakion@reddit
The could have flown it unpreassurize
MorastK@reddit
Sure but that’s a long flight back to the US below 10’000 feet.
Ustakion@reddit
An A380 flew with its gear down across the atlantic. And they could have stop in the azores

If, theoretically, you were to stick the ferrying crew in pressure suits with oxygen supply U2/SR-71 style, what would be the practical concerns with flying a perforated aircraft like this unpressurized above 10k?
MorastK@reddit
That is not possible on a KC-135, at least not currently. The USAF ABDR teams simply put on scab patches so the aircraft could pressurized. Once back in the states a proper repair will be performed by a DEPOT team. Scab patches are used to quickly do a repair and get the aircraft out of harms way.

What's with the white areas under the wings? Has the paint come off, or is it condensation / ice or something (many where the fuel tanks are)?
Other photos from below by the same photographer show it a lot better than this one.
alienXcow@reddit
It could be supercooled fuel from flight at altitude freezing condensation under the wings now that they're on the ground in a cool, humid environment.

This is so excessive that I highly doubt this is real. The entire plane is covered. If that speed tape is there to cover discrepancies, this should not have flown.
RadosAvocados@reddit
According to the photographer it is real and was damaged by shrapnel in Saudi Arabia before being flown to England.
cosmicrae@reddit
They are real lucky none of the fuel storage cells were punctured.
Johnny-Cash-Facts@reddit
That’s not going to be a fun job.
joeywas@reddit
I came to comments with exact same thought - thanks for taking the heat on this one.

Speed holes. They make the plane go faster.
qtpss@reddit
I always get it confused, speed tape makes it go faster, right.

That’s what the car salesman told me, Krusty the Clown.

That plane needs a new razor
BagOfMoneyNoChange@reddit
This is the airplane that didn't survive the midair in Operation Epic Fury. RIP those poor crew.

This photograph was taken today.

Poor thing has the pox. Maybe it needs more calamine lotion.
SmallRocks@reddit
It just needs to run its course
