In all seriousness, what's going to happend when they start messing with Chinese boats
GoldenHeartDaddy@reddit
Yup. No bueno.
lizardhistorian@reddit
I guarantee Trump is talking to China right now telling them that taking back Manchuria is a good move.
Ancient_Weakness699@reddit
The U.S. isn't blockading the Straight. They are blockading Iranian ports. There is a huge difference.
-GenghisJohn-@reddit
Well, I’m going to predict even higher food prices, every time I go to shop, until I’m only considering eating humid air.
ExRays@reddit
China is just gonna wait the US out with a raised eyebrow and let the Trump admin stab itself. The US is more vulnerable to spiking gas prices than they are.
dopeygoblin@reddit
I'm not sure this is true. US is a net exporter of fossil fuels, whereas China is the world's biggest importer.
There is an argument to be made that democratic governments are more vulnerable to price increases, but as far as overall economic impact this absolutely will hurt china more than it hurts America in the near term.
ExRays@reddit
It is true and here is why.
The US doesn’t predominantly consume the oil it produces. US refineries are designed to process heavy crude, cause they were built when the US relied more on imports and they still do.
US oil wells produce light crude which demands different refining infrastructure. Thus we export it.
US refineries can process light crude, but it is not efficient, requires higher maintenance costs, and results in a higher cost per barrel.
Light crude has a higher API gravity and creates more light products like naphtha than a heavy refinery is designed to handle. This requires operators to cut total crude throughput and you also get lower supplies of product like dispel and jet fuel, causing even more cost increases.
Heavy crude is used to efficiently produce diesel and jet fuel in addition to petroleum.
The US economy runs on diesel and jet fuel (trains, trucks, and planes), is automobile centric, and the Administration has tanked investments into renewable energy.
China’s energy infrastructure is far more diversified, and has made far more investments in renewable energy and public transport.

sharksnack3264@reddit
Pretty much. They'll let the US government burn through money and weapons and exhaust any crumb of tolerance at home or abroad before they do anything. And when they do they'll present themselves as the reasonable party in the room. If they get violent (outside of Taiwan) it will likely be through proxies if they have learned at all from the US's mistakes. Why interrupt an enemy when they are making a monumental mistake?
TWIT_TWAT@reddit
Xi will voice concern and Trump will fold like origami. In reality, this concept of a plan will be walked back by tomorrow.

Maybe distraction, or jam communications? I have a feeling it won't be reported in US media if that happens...

China stands to lose a lot from this blockade. Going to war might be the smart option.

If the Chinese perceive this as a genuine attempt to strangle their economy, they will respond by initiating significant economic retaliation. They have every opportunity to do so, and in fact, they already did when Trump "only" attacked them with tariffs.
This time it would likely be the same as then (suspension of rare earth exports, sale of Treasury bonds, etc.) plus specific measures such as intercepting US-flagged ships or container ships, based on a logic of "reciprocity" (you intercept one of my ships, I'll intercept one of your assets).
Jumpy-Station6173@reddit
Treasury bonds won’t affect the economy, as the US will just buy them back. They really have very little effect at all on hurting the US.
What we have to worry about is if China stops doing business with us and drops all contracts for manufacturing our goods.
SacredUndeadMonkey@reddit
Trump is supposed to go to Beijing I think this week actually to get some sort of trade deal. They’ll throw him another tea party in his honor and he’ll fold like a cheap suit.
No-Problem5924@reddit
USA dominates this area due to superiority and also locality of local bases and permanent cariier groups. Its not a real possibility unless fired upon first which would be extremely unlikely and signal Chinese naval suicide. Even if they tried to force their way through they'd either hit a sea mine or be forced back by USA with minimal effort.
No-Problem5924@reddit
9 down votes signals 9 people so far who have no clue about naval powers and the reality of USA dominance.
Helpful_Bar4596@reddit
If they so much as cause a Chinese ship to divert course, you don’t think there would be significant repercussions on a global scale? Sure locally they might be dominant. That’s really not what’s at stake here.

If I was China, I'd start jingling keys in front of the hawks to spread the US navy out without appearing aggressive to the rest of the world. Putting more strain on the US logistics (especially the navy) either makes them take a step back or maybe rack up the budget to $2T. It's hard to predict but there's no real reason to be directly confrontational unless Trump starts it (like tariffs vs REMs).
Maybe North Korea and Chinese fishing/Coast Guard fleets start screwing around with Japan and Philippines more. It's safe to expect the Houthis to start getting hardware from "somewhere" and mess with the Suez route again. Maybe countries hosting US bases get more needy for some reason. Maybe pro-PRC / anti-US messaging in Taiwan, Japan, Philippines, India, etc. get stronger. They're definitely getting a lot of material to paint the US as volatile bumbling conquerors. Maybe there's in-roads with the Gulf States since this is messing up a lot of their long term plans. If we start hearing real criticism from he Gulf States, I think it's a big signal of a shift. One of the side-effects of not bothering to make a coalition is that all these consequences can be easily blamed on the US and Israel.
Delmorath@reddit
Considering the Chinese boats are bringing in manpads so I ran can use it to shoot down American jets I highly doubt the United States is going to let those ships pass full blockade on everyone. Things are going to get really tense I don't really see what the Chinese can do though. They simply do not have the capacity to challenge three aircraft carrier assault groups that far away from their home waters. The Chinese do not have a blue water Navy.
sailing_by_the_lee@reddit
Exactly the right question. Some US foreign relations types have been advocating for a US blockade of the strait unlessit is opened for everyone, which is just unconscionable brinksmanship with the Indians and the Chinese.
And for what? Trump's bruised ego? Will no one rid us of this turbulent president?

He’s not actually throwing a fit, he’s acting. This was the plan all along, to destroy US Hegemony for whoever was willing to give him the most money/power. He sold our country and our currency out from under our feet for his personal gain and the interests of his billionaire buddies. All that’s left is to sell off the last of the land and resources in the US to the highest bidders, force the workers out of property ownership by collapsing the job market, consolidating the remaining scraps of the industries into the monopolies, then sticking the US working class with the bill of laboring off the debts.

Big_Fortune_4574@reddit
I don’t think any war with China is on the horizon because trump won’t actually go through with blocking Chinese vessels. Their economic leverage is way too high, they don’t need to win any naval battles
AntiSonOfBitchamajig@reddit
Do the math on the timing, China said they want to take Taiwan by 2027,
The timing of Ukraine "suddenly hitting refineries" 4 YEARS into their war....
Then the play for Venezuela, and immediately Iran. . . the key energy lines for cheap oil to Asia.
In my analysis, we are absolutely trying to fight China....without fighting China... this is 1000% a proxy war.
kingofthesofas@reddit
I did think that when these events happened that it does seem like they are toppling the support and energy system for China. Also in the event of a war over taiwan Iran could attempt to use it as an opportunity to blockade the straight and extract concessions while the US is in the fight of its life.
AntiSonOfBitchamajig@reddit
US is in the fight of its life, we sent two naval strike groups to start it... just two, and took out 13,000+ targets in the first weeks on the other side of the world. Like... just looking at the math in the logistics... it's nuts. What they're doing from air only has been eye opening in capability. Go boots on ground... I'm honestly worried about it... they started equipping all the solders with EagleEye tech, and combine it with Gorgon Stare and WAMI systems .... like... theres no hiding, legit no hiding at all. It gets worse on how the drone swarm programs have progressed since their testing form 2016 and AI starting to control it, its ruthlessly efficient and numerous. Like... if this is what future wars are going to be, I'm thinking about selling my 308 battle rifles, I don't even think shotguns would even dent defending against those systems even temporary to get away due to how Gorgon stare works.
Anyways... just... don't doubt the capability, its like theyre toying... honestly.

China is far more likely to seek a pacific reunification without Taiwan than a war.

okiedokie321@reddit
The problem is something like 90% of the country didn't buy an EV prior to the war. Dealers jacked up the prices on new and used EVs. They're gonna jack it up even more when gas prices go up further.
Saturn_winter@reddit
I just filled up friday, 40 dollars for half a tank
TheZingerSlinger@reddit
Ditto. Even with almost a dollar off a gallon (grocery rewards card) it was $50 for less than half a tank of diesel. And I live in a state where diesel is still only $4.50-ish a gallon.
The last tankers of stuff from the Persian Gulf hit US shores around the 15th. Even though our imports are pretty low overall (about 8% I think), it’s going to have an impact.
Plus, there’s at least one major refinery partially offline due to a fire (Port Arthur TX), and a water crisis in Texas is putting negative pressure on others (Corpus Christi: https://apnews.com/article/corpus-christi-texas-water-shortage-oil-gas-1d9577698f394e83335f1ed5c16cef6d )
okiedokie321@reddit

AntiSonOfBitchamajig@reddit
Front running potential fuel cost increases. Yeah, they'll go higher, but the real bottleneck is the logistics of exporting fuel for the US.
Abroad though... and especially Japan, Korea, Australia... they're going to see generational fuel crisis that will be talked about for the rest of their lives. ... like... invest in bicycles crisis.
mountaindewisamazing@reddit
I don't think most Americans really understand just how badly we screwed over the rest of the world. Life is going to SUCK and it's all because of us Americans. If you think we weren't liked abroad before wait until after this dumpster fire.
AntiSonOfBitchamajig@reddit
I agree, but I see a much larger game at play in how the events of the last year and a half have been going. Like, I see reason why they're doing it the way they have been doing it. Plays into grand strategy for the West vs East.
Serimnir@reddit
In many ways this feels like an attempt to artificially replicate the post WW2 situation where Europe and Asia were wrecked economically while North America was largely untouched, and indeed stronger as our industrial capacity expanded greatly in that time.

Immediate end of world type shit. I’m assuming nukes would fly if that were to happen.
randylush@reddit
Completely incorrect
Vladmerius@reddit
I don't think so. Everyone avoids this kind of conflict because they assume the othet side will use nukes but really the other side is assuming that about them. In the end I don't think anybody ever actually hits that button. It's understood that if that button gets hit it's the end. We'd need to be under super heavy casualties and basically be about to be occupied by Chinese troops before we'd OK launching nukes.
There's already been a bunch of call of duty games with wars going on with Russia and China both. There's no treason to assume that's impossible and the second a conflict breaks out we all die in nuclear winter.
hypnopaedia@reddit
Did you just use Call of Duty plot scenarios as a reference point for the real world unironically?
ForeverChicago@reddit
Except there’s been numerous historical examples of times that U.S. military and political leadership regularly advocated for or considered the usage of nuclear weapons during conflicts. The Berlin Airlift, Korea, Vietnam (both supporting the French and our own intervention later), Yom Kippur War, Iraq, etc. And never at any point were our backs against the wall. It was purely because we had that option and there were those who believed we should use it.
Not to mention even now, we’re still launch on warning. Aka, we aren’t going to wait and see if there’s a missile in the air or we think we’re about to get hit with a nuclear weapon to retaliate with nuclear strikes.
TheZingerSlinger@reddit
Launch on warning scenario: A massive solar storm, at an inflection point in a conflict, blinds early warning satellites, and it’s interpreted as a preemptive attack,
Scared-Tangelo-1771@reddit
Yeah sure dawg. Chilax
kismethavok@reddit
If that is true then we're already well and truly fucked, because it wouldn't even be an escalation of conflict at this point.

China would embargo things the US needs and it would be far more painful than a lost navy ship or a nuke. Iran is smart playing the economy card, and China has far more economy cards than the US can fathom.

It’s all on public display, too. And now any world leader who’s paying the slightest attention now knows without a doubt the US is being run by a crazy idiot (commanding the world’s most powerful military and has sole control over the thousands of nukes the US has deployed.)

I'll say this carefully. Nobody expected a deal to be reached in those peace talks. Vance, Kushner, and Witkoff probably never intended to have serious peace negotiations. Peace would ruin the grifts. The longer this conflict continues, it benefits the two instigator countries the most. POTUS and his Oil buddies will make trillions, while a certain Prime Minister can attack Lebanon and distract people from that pesky corruption trial.
Ok-Secretary455@reddit
I hate to say it but after looking into that corruption trial I was pretty shock by how little was there. The cigars and champagne thing is wild that it even made it to trial.
