Might sound kinda crazy, but what are some good movies that really show guns being used realistically (like handling, tactics, etc.) and are just straight-up badass?

Way of the Gun.
Theres4ofUs@reddit
That’s been my favorite movie since I saw it on a random Saturday afternoon in theaters like 20 years ago.

I love Sarah Silverman. She’s literally a national treasure.

Heat.

Casino.
Antique_Bee8466@reddit
Warefare, Black Hawk Down, Heat, Saving Private Ryan, and Shooter. All not perfect but good for Hollywood.
robinson217@reddit
There was lot of Hollywood BS in Shooter. My favorite was the can of Dinty Moore beef stew at "1 mile" looking like it was 100 yards away through the scope. They could have done a lot more to show how truly difficult and impressive a shot like that would be. But instead they just had Mark Wahlberg use exposition by explaining it to the dog😂. Still a great movie.
bitofgrit@reddit
Yeah, that and the thing where Michael Pena finds holes in the bell tower floor and that leads him directly to a specific tripod and remote control sniping system.
Oh, and when Kate Mara hands Marky Mark that .22 and says her husband "took a lot of deer with that rifle".
cautioussidekick@reddit
I think American sniper did a better job at showing distance when he took out the enemy sniper at range. All I could see was a blurry vague shape thing that he decided to pull the trigger on
AF_Blades@reddit
I like your list. Adding "Tears of the Sun" to it.
pissagainstwind@reddit
Black Hawk Down was a mandatory watch when i was in military command school.
The only unrealistic thing there was portraying the rangers like some sort of bottom of the barrel infantry while in reality they are an elite infantry regiment.
DasKapitalist@reddit
To be fair, they're bottom of the barrel from the perspective of Delta.
That's like getting smack-talked by other competitors at the Olympics. They're grading on a very steep curve, and that's readily apparent when you compare the portrayal of Delta vs Rangers vs the 10th Mountain. Even more so if you factor in the less than favorable portrayal of the Pakistani and Malaysian units.
The_Canadian@reddit
From what I remember of the book, Delta didn't have a very high opinion of the Rangers.

I'll probably get hate, but Keanu Reeves handles firearms quite well in the John Wick series. He might know a thing or two about three gun, also. 😁
DrusTheAxe@reddit
According to Taran Butler if Keanu competed he’d score in the upper ranks. Mr Wick has some serious natural talent
Mountain_Man_88@reddit
He gets it from The Matrix. Easy to shoot fast when everything is in slow motion.

What are you trying to tell us? That he can dodge bullets?

No hate, it was very clear he was training for three gun competition shooting. Certainly a good skill for an action star to cultivate.

Heat
Act of Valor
SodiumEnjoyer@reddit
Caution: there are two movies called Heat. If you see any of those bad Italian gangster movie actors, turn it off immediately
agoodyearforbrownies@reddit
I root for the bad guys in Heat, and not a big fan of either Pacino or De Niro, so it’s not a very enjoyable watch for me but a good shoot out.
Destroyer1559@reddit
Just be prepared OP, the Act of Valor acting is pretty ass lol. Still a cool watch, just re-watched it again the other day. The guns and action are tits though. The hot extract when the SOC-R's round the river bend is just 🤌
Anything by Michael Mann is a safe bet.
ceapaire@reddit
Yeah, I almost made a note of that. All the actors playing SEALs are actual SEALs. Tactics and movement are on point. Acting is very wooden.
ga-co@reddit
Caution; There are two movies titled Heat. If you see Burt Reynolds, stop watching immediately.
SurgeryWizard@reddit
People should be born with this knowledge

Sadly, they are not. I'm doing my part.

Not super high on list but I always thought the messiness and misses in the gunfight in Open Range deserves a mention. It’s not sexy just chaotic, which in my mind is truer than most portrayals. Plus it’s an enjoyable Western overall. Kostner and Duvall.
AF_Blades@reddit
Tears of the Sun had a very good military advisor.
HiddenEclipse121@reddit
Heat, so realistic they even use it as a training video.
DasKapitalist@reddit
The audio alone is impressive for the echoes of gunshots in an urban area.
GildSkiss@reddit
Sicario isn't perfectly accurate but it's one of my favorites.
Nay_K_47@reddit
The burn notice guys effin bolt is locked back when he spins and aims out of rear driver's. Gimme a break.
landmanpgh@reddit
The whole border crossing scene can be studied just for how well Delta handles their firearms. Even for simple things like how they all roll down their windows before getting out of the car.
swear_bear@reddit
Why do they do that?
landmanpgh@reddit
While what the other person said is correct, that's probably not why they do it in this instance.
They were likely listening. They wanted to hear everything that was happening outside of the vehicle as soon as they realized the guys were there to kill them. They actually don't aim out the open windows at all.
If you watch the scene again (and everyone should, it's an amazing scene), they almost move like robots. Everything they do is so precise, it feels unnatural. Separately, it's a masterpiece in how to create and build tension in a scene:

Da1UHideFrom@reddit
If you have to shoot from inside the car, the glass changes the trajectory of the round and closed windows increase the percussive shock felt by the shooter.
It's best to get out of any vehicle before shooting.

Strike Back, series is pretty good. One of the few that will show them pick up ammo or different guns as needed. No unlimited mags here

Lone Survivor. The way they shoot and maneuver with there firearms is very realistic. There always on semi auto which is what your taught in the military to use. I noticed more movies are starting to be more realistic, The Outpost was pretty realistic. Black Hawk Down too.
Low-Landscape-4609@reddit
Hurt locker. Jeremy Ritter went down to tactical response to prepare for the role.

John Wick
Waja_Wabit@reddit
I think the original was the most accurate. The sequels had some unrealistic bits that were added for the over-the-top factor.
ASnakeNamedNate@reddit
Yeah once they laid down the foundation, which was pretty good, Hollywood hadn’t put out anything like that before so audiences associating the moves with John Wick. Then they capitalized on it by developing its own, elevated style as the movies went on so there’s a certain brand to it all while other films tried to up their game.
The Wick Flick will probably keep its namesake for a while haha
TPK_MastaTOHO@reddit
Probably not the movie Wanted...
matadorobex@reddit
Equilibrium
Nah, just kidding
WhiskeyAndLead@reddit
Haha I was going to suggest it as THE movie to watch if you wanted to go the opposite direction with realism. It really is a great gun movie.
