5060Ti 16gb VS 5070 12gb

I have always played a variety of games on an office laptop (Quadro P600 GPU), from Roblox, Valorant, to sim-racing (LMU). After almost 7 years, I have decided to buy a PC with a budget of around 1800$.
I mostly play games, but also use my laptop to do school work and maybe once a month record a video. The 2 GPUs,5060Ti 16gb and the 5070 12gb, are the ones that I am interested in, but I am curious which is more important, performance or v-ram. I have watched several videos, but each has a different opinion. One says performance is better, one says 12gb is low, and the 16gb has better value
Own-Indication5620@reddit
5070 all day. 5060 TI lots of VRAM, but way slower at 1440p and up.
nuenoxnyx@reddit
There's too many random content generators spamming about this issue or that issue, so people get confused about what really matters.
Generally for a gaming GPU, the order of importance is:
Raw power / rasterization
VRAM - having the sufficient amount for the most demanding games you play, at the resolution and settings you play. After that amount, there's no real benefit outside of "futureproofing" for the future's more poorly optimized games
GPU's generation - for access to the latest features like DLSS/FSR
Framed-Photo@reddit
I would value features over vram if it's a matter of 12gb vs 16gb lol. People have so fully overblown the importance of vram it's insane.
Hawk7117@reddit
vram for 1080p is still pretty much a non-factor, I know my 5070 gets real close to that 12gb vram cap on ultra settings at 1440p though. I have no issue turning the settings down to high at all, but a $600 GPU should be able to bypass that concern if a $400 one can.
I am kind of worried about the next few years of games being released while only having 12gb of vram for 1440p if this trend keeps going.
Only having 12gb on the 5070 was a very tactical decision made by Nvidia to force you to either settle for 60 series performance, or climb the product ladder to the now $900-1000 5070ti.
Dangerous_Baker4427@reddit
I agree
Serious-Map-1230@reddit
Are you playing (and staying) on 1080p? Then 5070 is better.
1440p...tougher choice. 12gb is fine today, but rapidly getting tight.
What a silly thing Nvidia... Give us a 5060ti 12gb, and a 5070 16gb...
BeltEffective9310@reddit
1440p is fine for the 5070. Are you trying to imply the 5070 is a 1080p card?
Dear Lord....
Serious-Map-1230@reddit
I said exactly what I said. Today 12gb is fine for 1440p. But it is rapidly becoming tight.
There are games already that pass 8-10 gb at 1080p. Especially with ray-tracing.
If vram didn't matter, the 5060ti and 9060xt would not have 16gb variants...
BeltEffective9310@reddit
12gb of vram is only an issue in like 2 games at 1440p. Avatar Frontier of Pandora and Indiana Jones and The Great Circle with path tracing are the only ones, and those are extremely unoptimized and could even use more than 16gb of vram. 16gb wouldn't save the 5070 from those games. I know this because I have a 6700 and 5080,
There are games which use 8-10 gb of vram, but just use DLSS. Computer Base already did a sample test, and it looked better than native taa, which is unfortunately in most games today.
Also, the 16gb on the 9060xt and 5060ti are just marketing stunts. 5060ti is a good card, but it's only for entry level AI programs. which need more than 12gb. The same applies for the 9060xt 16gb. Why did you think Frank Azor from AMD say 8gb of vram is fine? They were totally ok with not having a 16gb variant.
WillPill_@reddit
Don’t bother, these guys just parrot shit they hear from tech-tubers instead of actual real world experience.
Serious-Map-1230@reddit
Yes that's is because techtubers do actual testing as supposed to annecdotal evidence of "my games are fine, I dont notice a thing".
Vram usage is increasing all the time, has been for ever, and will keep doing so. It is an ongoing thing. My first card had 12MB vram iirc...
Side by side comparisons are showing 8GB vram can hurt performance at 1080p ultra already in modern titles. You get spill overs, and thus stutters.
And again: yes, TODAY 12GB is fine for 1440p!
Ongong process of vram usage increasing. We had this same discussion about 2GB which was fine, then 4GB which was fine, then 6GB which was fine and now we are at 8
3070 (8GB) used to be a great 1440p card...wont see may people recommending that anymore for 1440p.
Then again, if you dont care about playing the newest titles at high settings I suppose it will be fine. Or just buy a new card when limits start to actually appear.
all I said was "STARTING to get TIGHT", not "can't use that card for 1440p"
WingerRules@reddit
Nvidia should have dedicated the 5060 to be a 12gb card, and then allocated that extra memory to a 5080 TI line with 20-24gb of memory.
Razzberry85@reddit
I'm surprised Nvidia decided that 5080 should be 16 gigs. There's barely any performance difference between that and 5070ti.
WingerRules@reddit
My theory is that since they're so heavily involved in AI and basically steer the whole market, internally they knew way ahead of time of everyone else there was going to be a memory crisis, so they shorted it of memory.
Razzberry85@reddit
Nope that's not true at all. You've to realize 50 series cards are almost 2 years old now and they were in production even before that. So it was decided that 5080 will have 16 gigs all those years ago. Which is stupid, it'd honestly a really powerful card but held back by its VRAM.
Razzberry85@reddit
Then nobody will buy the 5070ti. 5070 only exists to make the 5070ti look like a good deal.
Serious-Map-1230@reddit
Then make tje ti cheaper ;p
maniacalmayh3m@reddit
MSRP is way closer. Supply and demand issue. Same as SSD and vram in general
philbobagginzz@reddit
I have a 5060Ti 16gb, and I don't know what you guys are talking about it being bad at 1440p. I have it paired with a 10700k and I get reasonably stable 120-140FPS on high or ultra settings with most games and I'm using a 1440p monitor. It's a capable GPU.
maniacalmayh3m@reddit
Get the 5070 no doubt if money doesn’t matter. I don’t think I’ve ever seen my entire 16gb of vram gobbled up on my 9070xt. I think Crimson Desert is one of the highest I’ve seen just under 12gb.
Speed is king. For example the 9060 XT has 16gb buts really to slow to make use of all the vram. Still a great card to max out 1080p and entry into 1440p.
BeltEffective9310@reddit
VRAM allocation is what you most likely saw on your 9070xt. Issue more vram if there is more available. Also, AMD compresses vram worse than Nvida and allocated more in general so there’s that.
Nosferatu_V@reddit
I will always be of the team who says 5070 Schmifty schmeventy and recommend you to go with a 4070 Super instead. It's laughable that the 5070 doesn't even surpass the previous generation in raw horsepower and it's a way to save ~$200 going used.
That aside, go with the 70 class card, it's a better chip than the 60 Ti and the difference in VRAM won't be that much of a gain not for another 5 years.
lLoveTech@reddit
Whoever says 12GB VRAM is low is not to be trusted with! 12GB is more than enough for 99% of the games and you can always tone down the textures a bit if any case it exceeds the buffer!
The 5060 Ti will run out of power even before it can utilise all that VRAM while the 5070 can run much faster! VRAM is more important for complex AI models but for games today it is more than sufficient!
BeltEffective9310@reddit
Watch people bring up Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and Indiana Jones when they run like crap on higher end cards with more vram and could exceed more than 16gb of vram lol.
prank_mark@reddit
Why not go for a 9070 XT? It performs the same in games as a 5070 Ti but it's roughly the same price as a 5070 in a lot of places.
alextpale@reddit
5070 for gaming and editing, 5060 ti for uh.. yeah just get the 5070
paneer_dosa@reddit
5070ti build is quite possible at this range with cpu-mobo-ram bundles from microcenter. Why would you look at these 2 inferior cards?
Jackriecken@reddit
Team red if you want the 16gb
User_of_redit2077@reddit
Do you want to loose ~30% performance for 4 Gb VRAM?
Old_Truck_1636@reddit (OP)
Yeah, that's what I'm thinking, but people keep saying take the 16gb for the long run
User_of_redit2077@reddit
With 12 gb VRAM you would need to lower texture resolution after time, but with 5060ti 16 gb you won't lower texture resolution, but every other setting far sooner than with 5070.
zabraautra@reddit
Dont forget the new ai tech that nvidia announced recently, minimizing vram usage of textures in game by a factor of 6.
User_of_redit2077@reddit
RTX 6090 6 GB VRAM
WingerRules@reddit
Maybe its just me, but I struggle to see the difference in most games from their max texture resolution option to 1 setting down.
CarQuery8989@reddit
You also don't lose much in most games by dropping textures down from ultra to high. Ray tracing with high textures will look so much better than rasterized ultra.
User_of_redit2077@reddit
Ultra really don't give much better looks but for much more performance cost.
MisLuck@reddit
Eh by the time those 16 gigs become too little that card wont have enough horsepower to punch weight anyway
psimwork@reddit
It's the same mentality people get trapped in with buying a crazy amount of CPU cores when they only need like 6.
Their mindset seems to be "well more cores is FUUUUUTTTUUUURRREE PROOOOOOOOOOFFFF!!!". But by the time games actually need the additional cores, the cores themselves will be long obsolete.
CatPale9295@reddit
Not even a comparison lol , 5070 wins 100 precent of the time , 16gb is made for VERY intensive load , which in ur case isnt , also if ur worried about sim-racing i can assure u that 5070 can handle it very smoothly , i know that because i had a 3070ti and it was incrediably smooth when playing sim racing ( played f1 for a while and main game was Le Mans ) , so its better not to fall for that marketing 16gb shit .
metamorfozaa@reddit
Just get the 9070 XT 16 GB for a few bucks more, it definitely outperforms the 5070.
Several_Sweet_4298@reddit
The 5070 doesn't have enough vram to show its true power, while the 5060 ti 16 gb doesn't have enough power to use that amount of vram at its potential.
vaderdidnothingwr0ng@reddit
5070 Ti super has 16 GB Vram, though if I'm being honest I've never seen the demand on it higher than 12.
Tribe740@reddit
Don’t fall into the Vram trap
Mysterious-One1055@reddit
Yep, I'm loving 1440p with my 8GB in my 3070ti. No plan to change any time soon 💪
KingOfEreb0r@reddit
of course the 5070 ... 12 GB VRAM is enough
Lonely_Platform7702@reddit
5070 by far. It has another 10-15% OC headroom it's a lot more powerful. If you ever run out of Beam just set DLSS a setting lower and your done. You won't run out of the 12GB of VRAM. Especially with current RAM shortages making a lower amount of RAM more standard.
raydialseeker@reddit
At this budget you can get a 9070xt 7800x3d on the buildapcsales subreddit
Substantial-Pin5491@reddit
so long run is 5060 ti vs 5070 ti or 5080 all 16gb and 5070 is doa/buy twice.
Slydoggen@reddit
I own the 5060ti 16gb and I play at 1440p and it works great. Cant compare to the 5070 though becouse I don’t own it
Nightlower@reddit
5070 is much better
Razzberry85@reddit
In terms of gaming, 5070 will be a much better value here but if you need some VRAM intensive WORK then and only then go for the 5060ti.
CivilChaos@reddit
5070 is better for your use case imo.
Electronic_Desk_3170@reddit
if budget isnt an issue, get the 5070
tronatula3@reddit
Of course the performance is much more important, vram amount almost means nothing at 1080p Ultra
