What do you suggest as a good all round anchor for a 28ft sailing boat?

long story short
I have 1 Danforth and 1 Bruce and I was thinking about upgrading to a more modern anchor.
went into the rabbit hole. which one would you like?
delta, mantis, rocna? any other?

It’s not the anchor, it’s the chain.

That's why these days oil tankers save weight by just leaving the anchor on shore and dumping chain on the bottom.

Rocna's are good, but can foul in thick weed when trying to reset. It's hard to find a great all rounder, but they are great holding in sand. I've sat out enormous blows with limited scope on a rocna and been find. Same to be said about a Delta, not as good as a rocna, but surprisingly good.

1 pound per foot of boat.
Creepy_Connection_62@reddit
10kg rocna should do the trick
down2daground@reddit
Rocna, in a second.
Naive_Adeptness6895@reddit
Chain length and weight is as/more important than anchor.

Replaced our 60# CQR with a 44# Spade. Today I’d go for a Rocha Vulcan. Similar design, better pricing.

What you have is fine.

Rocna. And if not that, Mantus

We’ve had a 44lbs (20kg) rocna on our 5t 34ft boat for years. Always been amazing (with 10mm chain)
If I was to change it i would pick the Vulcan

i have a 65 lb mantus M2 on my cat

CQR

If you're concerned about the anchors ability to reset (e.g.: in strong, reversing currents) a Sarca Excel is an excellent choice.
caeru1ean@reddit
75lb rocna

I have a 28ft boat, one of my first purchased was a rocna anchor, completely happy with it! I use it in tidal waters, and it never failed to re-set after the tide change

Where i sail it's pretty much all sand or mud and never had issues with the bruce anchor. It doesn't have as much holding power as others at the same weight but it is still the one that resets more easily and quickly, which is what i want
Proud-Suspect-5237@reddit
I've used an oversized Bruce (not a knockoff) for six years with only one dragging incident, and that was in 35kts of wind on a hard-rock bottom where I didn't let out enough scope.
PracticalConjecture@reddit
I have a 25lb Mantus M1 on my 29' sailboat as a primary, and a 17lb M2 as a secondary. Both have proven extremely reliable.
Without a windlass, I think that a 25lb anchor, plus 15lb of chain is about the maximum you want to muscle off the bottom.

I have a 15k lbs 31 ft boat and a 33 rocna and I’ve been cruising on it for years in the tropics. The only time I’ve drug is when it got tangled in a tarp. If you’re in norther latitudes or in danger of seeing hurricanes I’d get a mantus which breaks down and can be stored. These newer styles are all you need. They work great and set so fast. You can kinda just toss it overboard and go to bed when you get in. Get a size in lbs around your boat length in feet.

Rocna. Checkout their website, has a sizing guide for boat weight.
Mine held my Watkins 27 during Matthew and it was recorded as having 100 mph gusts.

Good luck, be well!
Took me a bit to get the anchor up as it was buried deep.

I have been using a Mantus for 10 years. It has a larger roll bar than a Rocna so a bit less tendency ti jam the gap with weed.
Infrequently mentioned is that it was cheaper than a Rocna and ships broken down, ao shipping is cheaper. Assembly not difficult.
Monkey_Fiddler@reddit
what bottom type and how. much do you value weight, holding power, resetting and cost?
JacketWhole6255@reddit
Had mantus and rocna. Prefer the rocna.
AlwaysBeASailor@reddit
I have a heavy 28ft long keel and use a 14kg Plastimo Kobra II which is excellent. A bit heavy for the size of boat, I know, but it weighs 4.5 tons.
DarkVoid42@reddit
rocna vulcan
Rino-feroce@reddit
Any new generation anchor is fine: Spade, Rocna/Vulcan, Mantus m1/m2
Odjig@reddit
I got a Rocna and never dragged again. The peace of mind when it digs in is wonderful. Be sure to have enough chain (or use a kellet) to lessen the angle of pull on the anchor. There are lots of videos on YouTube with performance tests of the different anchors. I would buy another Rocna today, if I had to.
busybee4242@reddit
I put a mantus on my 28 ft catalina and it was great. Never had an issue. Later put a big rocna on my 40ft cat and sailed with that for 4 years full time. No issues except, trouble setting in bahamaian crab grass. Seriously either of those anchors are aswesome in almost all conditions.
Guygan@reddit
What kind of ground are you anchoring in? Different anchors work well in different conditions.
