Do you get that pleasure hit from first cup of tea in morning?
Posted by Longjumping-Equal895@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 109 comments
Just had a conversation with my other half about this and made me think is it just me as it can’t just be me
I was talking about coffee and tea and how I will drink coffee to wake myself up but I don’t enjoy it as I don’t get that relaxing all over pleasure feeling from coffee in the morning and she was like wtf you on about?
So in morning my first cup of tea I get this wave of what I can only describe as dopamine hit coupled with that “ugh that’s better” feeling
She has said that’s not normal or weird so I just want to know how many other brits have that sort of thing or am I just hopelessly addicted to tea?
Competitive_Rub_9590@reddit
Can’t say I’ve ever got that from tea and I have one most mornings I did you used get that from cigarettes though the first one of the day when I used to smoke
BriefSpray3765@reddit
Ooo man. I smoke and know it’s all bad and so on and so on.
Taking that first drag in the morning with a coffee is bliss… or you think it is. Or maybe it is?
But all you are doing is smoking a cigarette, so why would you feel bliss?
Every smoker always says that they regret starting to smoke and warns every one of it.
Smokings awful.
Superspark76@reddit
It's the one smoke out of each packet that keeps most people doing it. For me sitting outside with a cuppa and a ciggie on a summer morning was bliss. More so when sitting at a campfire.
Thankfully I've been off then for over a year now, still have a vape to get off but getting there
MyNewAccountx3@reddit
I couldn’t relate to the drinks, but the cigarette’s I can relate too. God I miss it sometimes!
Dry_Bluebird_2923@reddit
Oh yes! I miss the after dinner cigarette the most.
EvilTaffyapple@reddit
Tea? No.
Coffee? Yes.
Think-Image-9072@reddit
Yep same for me. I go to bed looking forward to my morning coffee.
Future-Exercise-7433@reddit
Same! The first coffee is one of the best bits of my day
Heathy-Heatherson@reddit
Yeah its the best.
lilidragonfly@reddit
No I can't stand black tea, I get an active bleurggh response just from the smell 😅 I do get a similar comforting experience from other drinks I like, like redbush and mint tea though.
Short-and-paranoid@reddit
Mint tea is the best ❤️
AdhesivenessGlum1143@reddit
Tea in the morning means nothing stressful or annoying happened that morning and I am getting my 10-15 minutes of chill-time.
I have a lot of animal chores and family stuff to do before work so if there is spare time, it is a great morning. 😅
OreoSpamBurger@reddit
The occasional morning when you're up earlier than usual, everything goes smoothly, and you find you have time to squeeze in a *second* cup!
snittersnee@reddit
The first cup in the morning and the last one at night hold an extra level of sensory gratification.
Longjumping-Equal895@reddit (OP)
I have a cup of tea before bed as well it helps me unwind to actually sleep I find
OreoSpamBurger@reddit
Came here to say I get the warm-fuzzy feeling, and also enjoy a bedtime cuppa. If I am stressed about something, I'll often wake up at 3 or 4 am - off I go to make another cup of tea to help me back to sleep!
snittersnee@reddit
Aye, that weird restless netherrealm between 11 pm and 1 am settles right down with one at the end.
teacup901@reddit
I drink coffee in the morning and tea in the afternoon
snittersnee@reddit
The days I do have coffee I go that way. Otherwise Im sweating bullets by 1pm.
Upper-Flatworm8784@reddit
Tea has both caffeine and theanine. Coffee doesn’t have theanine.
Theanine is a feelgood substance.
CosmosTrip@reddit
Yes 100%. I’ve seen it speculated the L-theanine present in tea may provide some relaxation tempering the caffeine experience and resulting in a nicer feeling … but I think the amount is less than a perceptible dose so I’m not sure, interesting theory either
EffectivelyR1pped@reddit
The first cup of tea in the morning will always be the best cup you have all day.
PsychologicalDish430@reddit
Nope sorry.
tooktherhombus@reddit
I've just found out I have to stop drinking decaf tea having already come down from caffeinated. I am not happy about it. I can manage through the day with cold water or sad cups of hot water but that first drink of the day is going to damn well be tea. Nothing else could possibly replace it
Longjumping-Equal895@reddit (OP)
Why do you have to stop drinking tea 😱
I can’t even imagine how miserable I would be if I had to completely give up tea
tooktherhombus@reddit
Tell me about it. Boring party-pooping health reasons (circulation is shot, heart is naff, body attacking itself thinking it's being attacked, you know, the usual suspects). They can take my morning cuppa out of my cold dead hands
sniffing_dog@reddit
I do know what you mean, but it's random for me, some cuppas just hit differently
Longjumping-Equal895@reddit (OP)
Ever have the time where you have the perfect cuppa and you down it really fast and then realise aww shit I wish I savoured that as I know I won’t have another cuppa like that for a while
sniffing_dog@reddit
It's a moment of beauty.
abyssal-isopod86@reddit
Yes.
First cup of the day is the best!
Capable_Tip7815@reddit
I get that from coffee. I don't have my first, and only, cup of tea until after my dinner.
Lopsided_Snower@reddit
Oh absolutely, I get unbridled euphoria from Yorkshire Tea. I end up on binges with it though, like true addict behaviour. I stay up all night drinking it sometimes, up to 20 cups
MelodicAd2213@reddit
I’d never be able to sleep if I did that
wildeaboutoscar@reddit
Yes. It has to be proper coffee though. I have pod coffee and although it is good first thing in the morning, it doesn't give the same dopamine hit as aeropress coffee (probably stronger!)
eric-artman@reddit
No. And on top of that, I always thought I would find hundreds of types of tea here… a corner shop in my country has more to offer than a UK supermarket. I avoid British tea because I see it as lower quality. My partner, though, prefers it.
Longjumping-Equal895@reddit (OP)
There are “speciality” kinds of tea but is brits have our faves
PG, Tetley, Yorkshire are the main ones and we get very heated about which is best but we all normally agree any tea is better then no tea
eric-artman@reddit
We have all british favs. Our favs are no better thou 👍. I suppose I’m not a fan of tea but there is one london tea bledfing company m and I will say they kick ass
toady89@reddit
I might but not if I've drunk coffee before it, I usually get it from the coffee.
barrenvagoina@reddit
I get it too, my first tea of the day is fucking magic. Heartbroken that my stomach gets too irritated by the tannins to drink tea on an empty stomach now, so it's postponed till after lunch
craigybacha@reddit
Not at all. Coffee or nothing.
ambernewt@reddit
First cup of tea in the morning is like a warm hug
CarpeCyprinidae@reddit
Two to three mugs of proper tea in the morning really gets me going - sense of relaxation with a satisfying buzz
DropDeadFredidit@reddit
For me, who chases kids around all day, it’s the teas that I actually get to sit and enjoy that hit the best. Too many cuppas are left to go cold at the moment.
Longjumping-Equal895@reddit (OP)
I had that with my kids, I invested in a ember mug to keep tea warm and stop wasting it. I highly recommend them but make sure leave top on otherwise you get this film from milk being kept at hot temp constantly.
ThinkLadder1417@reddit
Talking to me before my tea is a mistake. I used to be a 2 1/2 cups of strong black coffee first thing in the morning person, but then my stomach disowned me and caused lots of problems, and now I'm a tea makes everything better person.
Longjumping-Equal895@reddit (OP)
I always say that to people at work, havnt had tea fuck off unless someone’s dying or on fire
iMac_Hunt@reddit
My first coffee of the morning is magical. Tea is more of an afternoon and evening drink for me - rarely plain breakfast tea though because honestly, it just doesn’t taste of much..
L-0-T-H-0-S@reddit
Contrary to popular belief - neither coffee or tea wake you up or give you energy, in fact if you actually look at the calorie content of either it's virtually nothing. Your body likes to keep energy in reserve for things such as flight-or-fight, so - in order to do that - it releases adenosine which convinces you don't have much energy so as your body can maintain reserves for instances where you actually need it.
Coffee contains caffeine which is structurally similar to adenosine. When consumed, it sneaks into these receptors and blocks them, preventing adenosine from binding - hence, you're awareness of your actual energy reserves is no longer blocked. Caffeine also signals your body to produce adrenaline, which is why you might feel jittery or get that "boosted" sensation even though you haven't actually consumed any calories.
Tea's the same, it's just milder and contains L-theanine, which promotes relaxation without causing drowsiness by increasing alpha brain waves, which are associated with alert relaxation.
When combined with caffeine, it smooths out the experience, giving you the focus without the "jitters" or anxiety often caused by coffee - hence why some people prefer tea over coffee, including taste.
ItAintNoUse@reddit
Definitely. Coffee does nothing for me and doesn't actually wake me up, I'm not sure why. I do have ADHD and have read there might be a link between those things.
I drink decaf tea so it's not the caffeine, I just love the taste and the calming aspect of it. It's got a special quality to me that coffee just doesn't have.
Pockysocks@reddit
Nah, I find I can't drink anything other than water that early. Hits different first thing in the morning.
lilidragonfly@reddit
Water with fresh lemon and lime in, in the morning is amazing
Imaginary_Finger7844@reddit
The pleasure is in the process.
Coffee not tea, Tea is for sycophants and products of incest.
Stumble into kitchen. Somehow fill the machine with ground coffee and water. Have a wee and wait an agonizing few minutes for it to brew.
Pour coffee, sit, and enjoy the blissful five minutes of joy before life fucks you over again.
Priceless.
trevpr1@reddit
Yes. I see this in smokers who have the ritual of making a roll up. I have never smoked, but I see that process as similar to my making tea in a pre heated pot.
GeggingIn@reddit
Coffee gives me the shits.
Longjumping-Equal895@reddit (OP)
Very strong option of tea drinkers in that……. What Brit hurt you 🫂
Humorous-Prince@reddit
Coffee in morning and during the day. Nice Yorkshire tea when I get home from work each day, is the end of the day staple.
hausplants@reddit
The first sip of the first tea of the day is one of my happiest quiet moments.
imafuckinsausagehead@reddit
If I drink tea on an empty stomach, I will violently throw up, every time
So I always have coffee in the morning, I can have tea as long as ive got something in my stomach but I just find it easier to drink coffee, then tea in the afternoon
Longjumping-Equal895@reddit (OP)
I have never met anyone that can’t drink tea on empty stomach. Ngl that’s a bit weird 🤔🤔
imafuckinsausagehead@reddit
I know it's weird, started when I was about 16 just happened every time - apparently after googling it does happen and it's the tannins
Second_City_Guy@reddit
I know exactly how you feel. It's almost as if your internal battery gets charged to 90% with that first cup.
Longjumping-Equal895@reddit (OP)
Ye energy to deal with the day and not feel drained with first issue of the day you gotta deal with
nemmalur@reddit
I can’t be bothered to make tea first thing but maybe I should try it. I rely on coffee (several espressos) to kickstart me in the morning but by the afternoon I start to fade in a way that only tea can remedy.
SunAndStratocasters@reddit
Everyone is addicted to caffeine and they don't realise! That's why that first one 'hits'
DennisDunkdalk@reddit
The morning coffee is the relapse after a short period of cold turkey
Anxious_wank@reddit
There's nothing more self righteous in the feeling of getting the time to make tea first thing in the morning and sit outside when it's just barely warm enough be outside on the mornings with the sunlight rising and drink the tea, feels good.
wonky-hex@reddit
Yes, tea is lovely and I feel rubbish if I haven't had my morning cup. (It's not even the caffeine either, as I drink decaf)
EntiiiD6@reddit
Yes its called caffiene addiction/dependance. Stop for a few weeks and youll be back to your "baseline" and will feel good without extra chemicals.
I did this my entire late teens and early twenties.
ApartPurple9016@reddit
yes, and for any negative situation really. just a cup of tea makes me feel so relaxed and happy! just the comfort of a nice warm drink
KeithMyArthe@reddit
Making someone who doesn't understand the pleasure that a good cuppa brings - especially the first one in the morning - is harder than trying to get a spaceship replicator to make a proper cup of tea.
Tea is science, coffee is just brown flavoured water.
Longjumping-Equal895@reddit (OP)
Hitchhikers guide reference there but it is true
LucyLovesApples@reddit
No because I don’t drink tea
WryAnthology@reddit
Yes. And if I have to miss that first cup of tea for whatever reason, I am quite discombobulated.
Longjumping-Equal895@reddit (OP)
If I don’t get cup of tea in morning and have to rush off out the house I’m in a shitty mood all day
TransatlanticMadame@reddit
Tea is life.
Longjumping-Equal895@reddit (OP)
So is shrek
But tea first
olivinebean@reddit
I think about my first cup of coffee for the next day before I go to sleep.
Sea_Kangaroo826@reddit
Absolutely, it's very comforting, especially when it's cold weather but even when it's not
Kitchen_Moose717@reddit
Absolutely. 2 mugs of tea before anything else every day. Cannot ever drink coffee until those two teas have been drunk.
thelivsterette1@reddit
Nope. Don't drink tea or coffee. Not a fan of either. Love coffee in a chocolate cake though
paisleydarling@reddit
Having my first tea now, coffee after, but tea is always first!
teacup901@reddit
Coffee for me
Ok-Direction-8257@reddit
100%. The first tea makes everything better.
Cosmic-burst@reddit
Definitely! Coffee doesn’t have that same feeling. Tea gives you that all over tingle.
MaintenanceNo1504@reddit
Tea improves almost any situation
Longjumping-Equal895@reddit (OP)
Finally another man of culture
elchet@reddit
I make a flat white every morning, and the process of weighing beans, grinding, extracting espresso and steaming and pouring milk is a lovely cathartic build up to that first sip.
Tea for me is something quick I might have in the afternoon. If I remember that tea exists. I might have two or three cups of tea per week.
That said, a cup of earl grey and a slice of buttered toast or some cake is a joy that I do get that pleasure hit from.
rynchenzo@reddit
I only drink tea, as every time I drank coffee it felt empty and pointless.
Dennyisthepisslord@reddit
I don't drink coffee. I wouldn't say tea wakes me up it's more a "settling" than a wake up. Sets me for the rest of the day.
bluephoenix39@reddit
Seeing as my first cup of tea is after I’ve tidied up the kitchen and both of my children are sat down with breakfast, I very much get that ugh that’s better feeling from it
VolcanicBear@reddit
I don't drink tea.
I don't really get it from coffee though.
trevpr1@reddit
Barbarian.
Longjumping-Equal895@reddit (OP)
Heretic 😱
VolcanicBear@reddit
Ok, I do drink tea occasionally. When I have consumed far too much alcohol and need something to cut through it a bit.
Chiccheshirechick@reddit
Must be coffee first thing then it’s tea all the way !
trevpr1@reddit
Yes. I couldn't imagine life without it. I don't like coffee. I must have saved hundreds of pounds over the decades.
Jimbodoomface@reddit
I drink loads of coffee, but I enjoy tea
Elvin_Atombender@reddit
How many cups of tea a day is not enough?
Vepps91@reddit
I get that from coffee, tea makes me spit out tea from my mouth.
Lucymouse36@reddit
There is a reason the UK runs on cups of afternoon tea
Indigo-Waterfall@reddit
Absolutely! My first sip of tea in the morning is my greatest joy in life.
EmbarrassedAlgae3661@reddit
It’s the caffeine 🙄
Beartato4772@reddit
Coffee has absolutely no effect on me whatsoever but it's most of what I drink because I like the taste and it's basically calorie free unless you deliberately add calories to it.
SunAndStratocasters@reddit
There are some reasons why caffeine has no effect on people and they're not all good, you should have a look. Can be a sign of dehydration for example iirc
Williamishere69@reddit
I dont really drink tea, but I get it when theres that first sip of a coffee.. or, even better, an iced coffee.
Can't stand hot drinks unless I have a good dipping biscuit or something.
Distinct-Lion4658@reddit
I get mine from a zero sugar energy drink. I do sometimes go with coffee instead after discovering how tasty oat milk is
chocolateybiscuit81@reddit
Absolutely. And the first one when I get home from work.
Fingertoes1905@reddit
I start with a cup of tea as it cannot be beaten when you have just woken up. If I have time I’ll have another and then a coffee
