We're on Security Now

Probably not the first time, but the sub was sourced on the Security Now 933 episode. Steve Gibson talks about how a bug that causes firewalled windows servers' time clocks to get reset to 100s of years in the future. He points out a post is r/sysadmin from 2016 in which one of us troubleshot their crashed database to the same issue. Further, he concluded it had something to do with SSL time stamps but stopped there. It turns out they were right. Anyway, I thought it was neat.

His stuff isn't always relevant, and he almost always spends too much time talking about SpinRite, but there's relevant info too. I'm curious which other security-minded podcasts you recommend.

Risky Business https://risky.biz/ The main weekly one is an Australian journalist and a Pen tester from NZ. No adverts in the middle just a 10 min sponsored slot at the end which is often fairly interesting. They do, I think, a 3x a week 'news' issue which is usually just under 10 mins and there's another one too but I mainly listen to the news and weekly one.

SpinRite has NEVER worked for me. I have tried it on many many hard drives for giggles when I worked on the help desk. I would just let it run to see if it worked because I wanted to see it work. After trying it on half a dozen drives I let another sysadmin try it so I could confirm it wasn't User error. He couldn't get it to work either. The software would just run for days/weeks and not produce anything useful. I understand not all drives are salvageable but I have tried to run it on over a dozen failed drives and after it failing I just gave up on trying to get it to work.

Yep, can't give it up after 15 odd years. Old guys grumbling about how bad things are in modern computing and the occasional interesting advancement really do float my boat, delivered to my door in two hour chunks weekly.
