Did you know the verb "to bugger" which was used since early mediaeval times to denote a particular type of practice (from French "bougre" comes from the word for Bulgarian? According to some theories on account of the bogomils who were accused of such practices?

Were the Pomaks, Torbesh, and Goranci once Bogumila before they became Muslims?
vbd71@reddit
Many Bulgarian Bogomils became Catholics.

What should he think about them? Being Roma and Muslim is the norm in Bulgaria
Hefty_Jaguar4305@reddit
I thought Orthodox like the Bulgarians, ok...thanky for the Info.
Own_Worth_5929@reddit
Maybe in western Bulgaria, where ethnic Turks are very few.
vbd71@reddit
Both Muslim Roma and Christian Roma exist in most regions of Bulgaria. There are Muslims Roma in Western Bulgaria and Christian Roma in the Eastern parts.
Own_Worth_5929@reddit
I am from the "Eastern" parts. If they're Christian here, they're most likely in a sect.
In my region (Shumen) 99% of them are Muslim.
Hefty_Jaguar4305@reddit
ah ok yes you right.
Hefty_Jaguar4305@reddit
I didn't know the Roman Catholic Church was so strong in Bulgaria; I thought only the Orthodox Church was.
I know that the Pomaks were once Bogomils and then became Muslims—that's how they tell it.
ismellsomethinggood@reddit
Many Bosniaks also.

wait so you telling me that bulgur is from bulgaria, that's incredible, i've never made that connection
Zealousideal_Cry_460@reddit
Bulgur comes from arabic "Burgul" and "Burglar" comes from old German "Burg" or "he who breaks into the burg". Back then "Burg" means "castle" or "fortress"
J0hnnyBlazer@reddit
Man nobody wanna know all that even the Bulgarians let me get away with the bullshit I made up
Zealousideal_Cry_460@reddit
Lmao sorry bro
J0hnnyBlazer@reddit
what about 'burglar'? I think there most be some connection
LibertyChecked28@reddit
Also Vulgar since the Greeks cant pronounce '🅱️'
SE_prof@reddit
As a Greek I can confirm. We cannot
SituationRoyal6535@reddit
Vulgar is from Latin, meaning "common", hence Vulgata being the name for the Bible in the common language (not Hebrew/Aramaic/Koine Greek.)

and BVLGARI

Feels like every bad word in english traces back to bulgarian

And Ian Fleming’s “Chitty Chitty Bang-Bang”.
(Same guy who created James Bond made a silly family musical)
stuyvesant1@reddit
Does booger as in snot have a connection?
canyoubelieveitt@reddit
It doesnt though.
No-Championship-4632@reddit
It does, the French word bougre comes from bulgarus. It did not have anything to do with anal sex though and was used for a "heretic" (what Bogomils were labeled at the time). That meaning came centuries later. And from the french word came the English "bugger" which WAS about anal sex and not heretics.
shervek@reddit (OP)
It does though. According to every dictionary out there there is.
https://www.etymonline.com/word/bugger
canyoubelieveitt@reddit
No it does not. It started as a meme and the actual meaning is completely different.
shervek@reddit (OP)
It started as a meme? There are literal articles to be found in any scholarly database. I don't know why I am even bothering you responding to you if you don't bother to do a basic search.
canyoubelieveitt@reddit
But I did exactly that and its literal bs
hero_in_@reddit
Bogomil and Bulgarian are completely different things though.
Vihruska@reddit
The bogomils were known as the Bulgarian sect and bougre derives from Bulgarian. The association with bugger is due to the vilification of the sect before the crusade and following massacre of many Cathar cities in France.
vbd71@reddit
That particular strain of Paulicianism originated in Bulgaria though. And the priest Bogomil was Bulgarian, too.
hero_in_@reddit
so basically we can also claim that Bosnia is ours .. yay, I was afraid we were the only ones in the Balkans without a claim on them
Fred_Neecheh@reddit
*According to some theories.. *
Verb "to bugfix" is also derived from "Bulgarian" on account of strong IT engineering tradition in Bulgaria.
MyPlantsDieSometimes@reddit
The big bag itself originated in Sofia if you didn't know.
