What would you wear to a big trucking job interview?

If you wanted to walk in there looking like a real pro driver...
I'm finally (hopefully) moving into real job territory.
What does a pro trucker look like?
Commiefornian@reddit
Basketball shorts, slides. I like to go with a shirt advertising a beer, so they know I’m a relaxed guy.
copper_wing@reddit
One of those beer helmets loaded up too
NerveBooger@reddit
Pasties and brass rings for ring toss
LongjumpingCat6642@reddit
Jeans, plaid shirt, jean jacket, black cowboy boots, truckers ballcap, and big ol mutton chops
Level-Leg-1579@reddit
Wear assless chaps.
homucifer666@reddit
Wife beater, pajama pants, sport slides, and a headset glued to the side of their head. 😛
But seriously, wear what would make the most sense for your niche of trucking.
Logging and construction are probably going to want to see steel-toed work boots, sturdy pants, and a non-descript t-shirt or work shirt.
I see a lot of flatbed guys wearing overalls. Probably also want to see work boots.
Dry van and reefer are pretty open. They'll give you a uniform or dress code if they have one, but most I see don't really care. Just wear something comfortable.
Impressive-Menu8966@reddit
The perma headset guys kill me. Who are you talking to that much?
StolenRage@reddit
Anywho will answer the phone when they call. These are the same people that would have been talking nonstop on the CB back in the old days. It is their way of dealing with the loneliness of the job.
Impressive-Menu8966@reddit
Hah, I love the job DUE to the loneliness.
StolenRage@reddit
Same, but not everyone is built the same way.
ashen_queen13@reddit
I keep mine around my neck bc the second i leave that thing alone in my truck my cat tries to run off with it lol
LuckLovesVirtue@reddit
Let me put it this way - I did a zoom interview for In-N-Out in a collared shirt and tie and they asked me what field of work I was currently in
Jeepinthemud@reddit
Pants. Since it’s an interview underwear and pants.
Heather_Val@reddit
Shirtless?
Jeepinthemud@reddit
I’ll wear my safety vest.
Gonna kill it!
jabber1990@reddit
...job interview?
they just bought me a greyhound ticket and asked me to pass a drug test and a DOT Physical....
Cardinal_350@reddit
I worked at a company for 5 years before they pulled me in the office and told me they forgot to have me fill out an application for my file. Things were different back then.
jabber1990@reddit
how the hell were you getting paid?
or were you a 1099 and they changed their business model?
meizhong@reddit
I used to represent companies for dot audits back in the day (00s), a lot of companies would just send a copy of your license to the insurance company and if the insurance company said OK, you were hired. Then about half of them would do a drug test in the first 39 days or so, and maybe half of them that did that would actually update their random drug pool list.
So when the dot sent them a letter requesting paperwork for an audit, THEN they would go "oh shit" and have everyone fill out backdated applications. And then fake a bunch of other paperwork. And get logs from the driver for the first time in 5 years and somehow act surprised when the drivers didn't have 6 months of logs laying around. Crazy.
polarjunkie@reddit
I always did the whole process but the first thing I did was send their license to the insurance company because if they said no everything else was a waste of time.
meizhong@reddit
I get that, and that's better than most companies, but there's 3 reasons why you should have them fill out an application before doing anything else. 1, the application should include written permission for you to run the mvr. 2, the dot will love seeing a stack of applications for people you didn't hire. It proves beyond any doubt that you're doing the paperwork. And 3, the application should include a history of tickets and accidents. If the driver themselves report a history that you know the insurance company will not like, then you don't have to spend $30 on getting their mvr. You don't need to contact your insurance company at all.
polarjunkie@reddit
That's a great point. I did always document it, I had a one page release where they put any negative driving history and gave me permission to run their license through insurance. I never bothered to get their mvr first because it was free to run through insurance. There were a bunch of people I never sent to insurance though, dui's, recent suspensions, drugs, etc. I know the auditor looked through that when I got audited.
Trub_o@reddit
Legit, truck companies do job interviews? A lot of the other comments covered this too, but if it's like a small company or something where they'd do an actual interview, just don't look like a POS. Take that as you will. Business casual is always the best in my opinion, but you don't wanna overdress either and as long as it's presentable then cool. A suit and tie would probably get you laughed out.
DoctorZebra@reddit
Believe it or not, yes. 2 of my gas hauling jobs had formal, in person interviews. 2 others hired me on the spot during phone conversations. My current job hired me with no interview at all. My cryogenic job also had a formal, in person interview.
Trub_o@reddit
Fair enough! All of my experience so far in that regard has been OTR megas, so beyond talking to a recruiter on the phone they could probably give a rat's ass about an interview.
DoctorZebra@reddit
I understand. I was really taken aback the first time I was called for an interview after applying for a trucking job. Never had that happen before.
Active-Tadpole810@reddit
Be ready to work if need be. 1. Who is the interview with ? HR and an office person 2. Driver manager? Guy or gal that actually drives and / or drives. Be ready to work , I've done a full pre trip and road test on an interview more than once. Depends on the company.
Clean jeans and closed toe shoes. Have some gloves and a safety vest in your vehicle, so if need be, you can go and get them.
robexib@reddit
Serious answer: precisely what you intend on wearing on the road. Just get your grooming and hygiene in order before the interview. A good solid setup is a pair of boots with safety toes, jeans, and a relatively non-descript T-shirt. Nothing fancy, but don't go Rambling Man.
If you wear glasses driving, wear them during the interview, especially if they're prescription glasses.
RedlineM5@reddit
Never did an interview...was always hired on the phone
egivan6903@reddit
Honeslty if you really care about appearances just jeans, normal shoes and a regular shirt… your not applying for car salesman, they just want your license and med card over anything else
polarjunkie@reddit
Assume you will be doing a pre trip inspection and driving test. Dress appropriately for that.
DoctorZebra@reddit
I’d wear a nice, clean pair of jeans and a button down or polo shirt. Don’t have to get too formal, but dress better than you would for a day on the job.
MuffinTrucker@reddit
When I showed up to my first long haul interview I showed up in my regular jeans, button down flannel shirt, cowboy boots and a duffel bag full of clothes and work gear.
When asked when I could start I said right now, 20 minutes later I’m headed for a load of dumpster headed for Ontario.
theboywthagreenscarf@reddit
A nice sundress
Emergency-Bus-998@reddit
Shave your head and put on a pair of sunglasses
Trappin4DaSport@reddit
trucking jobs have actual in person sit down interviews this is news to me 😂
meizhong@reddit
If it's me, I'm coming exactly how I would dress for work everyday, and tell them during the vouiof the interview that this is what they'll be getting.
Black Duluth firehose pants, black steel toe work shoes, black socks, a very nice (seriously, they're on Amazon cheap) safety green t-shirt, tucked in. And a black hat to match the pants. And I'd shave for an interview.
IMO, I'd rather present as a driver looking way better than most of their drivers, easily imaginable doing their job, than as a guy who can wear a button up shirt once and have them imagining wtf I'll look like tomorrow after they've hired me.
Nothing wrong with, obviously, with wearing the button up and some slacks, but then it's just going to come down to experience and mvr. I want them imagining me doing their job and liking the thought.
smiles4Ubitches@reddit
It's said that you dress for the job you want. I wear cowboy boots (round toe) jeans and a button down open to the 3rd button.
trucksarekewl@reddit
Yall love some boots around here lmao
Pakman____@reddit
Button up shirt , short or long sleeve. Jeans or decent pants. Clean boots and or casual shoes. Just look clean and presentable for the most part.
Cardinal_350@reddit
Tuxedo
doobersthetitan@reddit
Should also go with your brother, bring him to interview too.
Spare-Good-5372@reddit
Don't forget the top hat and monocle. Gotta know how to accessprize in this business.
RectumRavager69@reddit
If you're really trying to set an impression and a standard of and for yourself, blue jeans and steel toes with a flannel shirt with your hair and beard immaculately groomed and in good physical shape. And of all of that the most important part is being well groomed and in good physical shape, and by good, I mean it should look like you could beat most people in a fight. They're not gonna give a shit if you show up in a three piece suit if you do it looking like a slob at 450lbs.
Purgieeeee@reddit
but like 90% of the people here are overweight lol
Spare-Good-5372@reddit
After you land the job it's ok to let yourself go
mywriting247@reddit
Does the interview also include a drive test? The last interview I went to included both so I showed up in work pants, work shoes and the black with yellow safety shirts
FossMan21@reddit
Jeans and a polo shirt. Decent closed toe shoes. I’ve worn a nice polo Jean and cowboy boots. Just depends on what you have and are comfortable with
Impressive-Menu8966@reddit
I pretty much dress like this too with more hi-vis. I am very much the "that dude dresses too fancy fer work" guy but fuck em. Poncho shirts are fucking comfortable and I have a ton, I may as well use them.
The_Okay_Baboo@reddit
At this point, I'm sure they would be very impressed if they didn't see your bare legs and feet. Basically, fight the modern trucker urge and put on some fucking pants and shoes. Probably get bonus points for looking like you're not going to shit on customer property, and don't smell like fireball from the night before.
Joeybowman@reddit
Nicest pants and shirt you have. It’s like any other kind of interview. It’s not an audition and you’re trying to look the part.
mrsclausemenopause@reddit
Jeans, boots, and a pearl snap.
MajorHymen@reddit
Being a truck driver just make sure you have closed toed shoes pants, jeans, or slacks and any shirt with sleeves be they short or long.
TruckinTuba@reddit
I had one on Friday, wore my steel toe boots, knee pad jeans, dirty his vis shirt and baseball cap woth safety glasses
Various-Blood-3902@reddit
this
1Stack_Mack@reddit
Ya know it's hard it out here for a pimp
Asylus72@reddit
Clothes are recommended, but if your feeling lucky birthday suit but clean shaven also works
Exciting-Car-3516@reddit
Hi visibility vest, headset and flip flops. I’ll guarantee they will hire you. Perhaps don’t shower for 3/4 days that can help as well
bicyclewhoa17@reddit
I wore jeans, pocket tee shirt and a baseball hat
TaperingRanger9@reddit
I once showed up wearing black skinny jeans and a band tee and got the job lmao. But if it's an actually good company I'd dress at least somewhat professionally.
One-Mastodon-6334@reddit
Look presentable. I usually wear business casual or a simple buttoned shirt, good jeans and dress boots. Nothing fancy. Don’t wear fucked up jeans and a T shirt with stupid shit on it. Dress mature and respectable
FloppyTacoflaps@reddit
Flip flops. Jorts a maga hat aviators, no shirt
Microshlongg@reddit
Spandex in the company colors. Fireballs in the side pockets and a strong axe body spray to show that im one of the good ones that cleans after themselves. Good luck driver. Don’t forget the tooth pick
firstblush73@reddit
Button down short, khaki pants, belt, loafers ... but im classy like that.
Dress like you wont be parked in a piss and feces encrusted truck stop parking lot, once hired.
Remember, office folk dont "live" the trucking life, they have no clue what its like out here.
MssMoodi@reddit
T shirt n jeans. Look ready to go to work right then.
Environmental-Pear40@reddit
Honestly, just be professionally normal. It's not really a dress up job. Maybe if the company requires uniforms dress like business casual.
Damn-MissedMy-Turn91@reddit
I wore black cargo pants, and a band t-shirt. I let my driving career speak for itself.
