I got a 7600x3d and I love it. Upgraded from 3700x and my god was my pc shit compared. Also upgraded 2070 super to a 9070xt and I have like 3x the frames of the old setup.

then the 7600x3d gives the best 1% lows in games, but the 9700x is still good but has a third of the cache which means it then doesnt perform so well in games but does perform better in everything else. what games exactly do you play? because some need a better cpu than others. also what speed and latency is your ram? because x3d cpus perform better with slower/higher latency ram, whereas non-x3d cpus basically need fast ram to not stutter and preform well, you just need to know the speed in mhz and the cas latency in cl

oh ok thats great, i would still recommend the 7600x3d unless you do a lot of things other than gaming like heavy video editing where a high end ryzen 7 or 9 x or x3d would be best, but if you are just gaming then i think the 7600x3d is best, you dont really need more than 6 cores for gaming anyway

9700 newer tech. More cores and threads. But less cache then x3d
But it will beat 7600x3d in multitasking all day long. With the newer die tech improved tdp by generation....it's the big brother to the 9600x where as the 7600x is the little brother to the 9600x and the 7600x3d is sorta like the 7600x on roids.
Couple with good cooling AMD also released a bios volt bump on some of these CPU's that increases the tdp and output for more performance.
I would go 9700x.

It is actually not a no brainer. Not when OP specifically asked for help. (Opinions will flow) And they seem to also value multitasking along with Gaming.
My opinion. (Humbly) is the 9700x is better for OP's use case. In all honesty the gaming benefit is very situation as we do not know what OP does play as far as games. That would/could yield FPS benefits upwards of 10% or similar with the X3D chip.
The 9700x is a Multi Tool. And does several things well.
Where as the 7600x3d is a screwdriver. Its a really nice screwdriver but only a screwdriver.

Go to PC partspicker and compare the specs for the two you'll see that the 9700X is newer tech and benefits from the die shrink and TDP advantages and has more cores I think that it will get people further than the older 7600X3D tech.
I think the 7600 X3D does have use cases for people that only game on their PCs but the majority of people use their machines or computers as a multi-tool so in my humble opinion and in my own personal use case scenarios I would rather have the 9700X

I've seen in another comment that you'd use the PC for gaming, I'd rather recommend you to get the 7600x3d. 7600x on roid is not the best description for the cpu, the 3d v-cache means that it's got incredible game performance and make slower ram (if your current ram kit is cl36 instead of cl30) not as impactful for the performance. Overall, as long as you aren't using the PC for specific workload and will be using it for browsing and/or gaming, there's not a good reason to get the 9700x when it cost more and perform worse at what you want to do.
Granted, 9700x is the 9000 series and has a more efficient architecture and more OC potential with more cores and threads, but more cores ≠ better performance in everything.
If you'd look into an article in Tom's hardware (I'm having a rough time finding the exact one to provide the link), the 7600x3d is the best cpu for fps/dollar.

This is why the OP asked for opinions.
I stated mine as their use case for the CPU is very similar to mine. Multitasking priority with good Gaming performance. Not only gameing. Having Youtube and Chrome open while gaming... I figure more cores are better along with the newer Gen uplift.
I do not give any care for a 5 to 15% uplift just for AAA title games if I loose threads and multitasking with trying to run Something like Bluestacks while browsing Chrome and listening to Youtube. The 7600x3d is more focused and situational for games.

The TDP is comparable. 7600X3D and 9700X both have a 65W TDP but the 9700X has a higher max tdp of 105w as opposed to the 88w for the 7600X3D.
Yeh, the 9700X is better for multipurpose use while the 7600X3D is better for gaming.

7600x3d will handle it for you then. The x3d cache will help you a ton in gaming, where 9700x don't excel nearly as much. YouTube video and background music's is more ram dependant than anything, so 0 worries about that.

I actually had those chips and OC them, with yt playing in the background during games. They don't have experience or they're just speaking based off some review based on 1080p some where. You won't be disapointed either chips coming from older systems. But zen5 9700x has made tons of great strides in gaming regardless of x3d cache, and 7600x3d has issues with multitasking while gaming. It's something people won't know unless they've had actual comparisons done in longer than review periods

9700x. But when oc it's a much much worse efficient, or more power hungry. With ram tuning and chip oc it can be as good as a 7800x3d in gaming or better depending on game demand. Ice had all three and other chips benched

7600X3D is enough for your use case. The price difference to 9700x is too big for something you won't make use of...
Alternatively, take a look at the 7700(x). It's a cheap 8-core CPU that can rival the 9700x in most productivity tasks for less money and holds its own in games (albeit weaker there than 7600X3D)...it's a well rounded CPU.

If you play competative high fps esports, 7600x3d and just put youtube or music on your phone or something. Though I doubt playing a bit of music will really impact the gaming in a meaningfull way.
Other games 9700x is perfectly fine and more overhead for background tasks.
