Let's talk about the progression of male undergarments for our generation
Posted by facesnorth@reddit | Xennials | View on Reddit | 229 comments
Just what is says in the title. If anybody like me, it was tighty whities as a child, to boxers in teenage years, then realizing boxer-briefs were actually more comfortable and eventually realizing the pleasures, convenience and comfort of wool or even some synthetic hybrids. Let's hear how ya'll have undergone your undergarment progression.

If you haven't tried Duluth Trading Co. Bare Naked boxer briefs, you are missing out!!!

So no one is gonna own up to bikini cut and thongs?

C-string too ... Not sure how they stay up

I don’t even know what that is
HalfFrozenSpeedos@reddit
i will admit to speedos, no different to "technical" wicking fabrics and hold everything in place snugly
False-Cookie3379@reddit
I heard they’re comfortable for dudes. Holds your junk up so they don’t stick to your leg but also have the freedom of comando.

Lol. This is literally 100% me to a T.

Once boxer-briefs hit the scene, I enthusiastically adopted them and never went back.

I like the ball pockets!

I actually held on to the tighty whities well into my 20s before I made the switch to boxer briefs.
Common-Sandwich70@reddit
Think you’ll ever give tighty whities a try again?
singleguy79@reddit
Nah, I'm good with boxer briefs.

synthetic? gross. 100% cotton is the only way.
THRSALWYSNXTYR@reddit
Cotton is gross, it holds moisture like a sponge.

Not just environmental reasons to be concerned about synthetic fibers in clothing
Same_Bug5069@reddit
And air. That dust in your house is mostly synthetic fibers.

Agreed. They are like a second skin. I might eventually stop wearing them....possibly maybe.

We were taking pictures of the groomsmen getting dressed and my brother had to tell the photographer, “uhhhh…I’m not wearing underwear “. There was a moment of silence someone told him they were his hero and I got him a spare pair of boxer briefs.

How often do you wash your pants/jeans? Because underwear is a one day wear and wash thing but I'll go quite a while between washing my jeans (as is recommended). It seems like with commando you're either washing your jeans way too often or you're being really gross.

I've completely transitioned from Hanes/Fruit of the loom boxer briefs to premium lifting and separating boxer briefs like Saxx. No more pinching or sitting on my sack!

What is the waistband rise like on Saxx?

Regular? Definitely not low, if you're trying to show off.

Lol, not trying to show off my Brittneys. Just not trying to cover my belly button. Regular sounds good 👌

They(saxx) also make some of the most comfortable pajama pants. So soft and stretchy, I literally refer to them as my “comfy pants”

Pouch boxer briefs are the jam. No more berries sticking to the thighs. I started with B3neath and then discovered Krakatoa. Krakatoa are low-rise and you can get them with a fly.
DisposableSaviour@reddit
How big are the pouches? Because my beanbag was always too big for the pouch on the brands I tried, and didn’t do shit to keep the boys from chafing.
GravityWorship@reddit
Krakatoa pouches are significant. They have some that are longer than others. The website reviews have a lot of user submitted photos. There is also an NSFW subreddit with a lot of pics. Some real exhibitionist dudes out there lol.
I appreciated the pics though, since I was mostly concerned with the waistband rise. The BN3TH are too high waisted for me. Some come up to my belly button.

kid_entropy@reddit
Boxer briefs were a revelation for me in the early aughts.

Bamboo based fabric. It's like cotton and silk made a kid. I even buy bamboo TP.
SB4_Camaro@reddit

JustOneMorePuff@reddit
It is. If I’m ever away from home and have to poop I’m left feeling itchy and dirty the rest of the day. The aversion to it is hilarious…
THRSALWYSNXTYR@reddit
I buy individually wrapped wet wipes and keep some at my work desk, in my laptop bag, and in my cars glovebox. This way, I always have them when I am out and about.
cjthomp@reddit
But men’s stalls don’t have trash cans, and you can’t flush so-called flushable wipes.
THRSALWYSNXTYR@reddit
If it comes down to me having a clean ass at work, or worrying about whether or not my one or two small wet wipes will threaten to clog the 6" sewage line, I'm gonna chose a clean ass every time.
grantnaps@reddit
You need a portable bidet.
SB4_Camaro@reddit

Billy-Ruffian@reddit
Bamboo fabrics are basically rayon, just with fancy marketing.
THRSALWYSNXTYR@reddit
I just looked that up (no offense, i dont take any reddit posts at face value) and read about how toxic the production of these fabrics are and that workers are regularly exposed to dangerous levels of carbon disulfide, leading to serious health effects. This sucks, cuz I switched to bamboo underwear a year ago.
johnvalley86@reddit
Bamboo TP. I'm going to have to research that. Sounds delightful if it's as soft and durable as I'm imagining
timbreandsteel@reddit
Terrible for septic. But yes, it's very soft.
superficialdynamite@reddit
Why do you say it's bad for septic? It is my understanding that it breaks down quickly
timbreandsteel@reddit
Huh, I remember reading it was, but can't find anything to back that up now. Guess I am mistaken!
ArcadeKingpin@reddit
Same progression but back to t the ol whiteys. My balls are so saggy they slats popping out the bottom of my boxer briefs. I need thigh elastic to keep them boys from escaping. Gotta toss the beans over the franks when sitting on the toilet to keep them from dropping in the water. I heard jokes about old man saggy balls but no one is ever honest about the true side effects of it.
Makeshift5@reddit

They sell anti chafing boxer briefs that are best of both worlds. They are boxer briefs that just have and extra pouch area to cradle like tighty whities.
Brewtin35@reddit
Briefs since childhood, except when I worked at a restaurant I would wear boxer briefs on long shifts. Sometimes if I do a hike. Other than the just plain briefs.
I was once gifted a pack of boxers when in middle school but I did not like them whatsoever.
PandaRider11@reddit
I’ve wore tighty whities briefs my whole life, they were what my mom bought me growing up and kept buying them into adulthood.
Wore boxers my first two years of high school on days when I had to change for PE class and hated them since they gave no support. Tried boxer briefs after college but didn’t like the leg parts so have just stayed with regular briefs.

For those who made it to boxer briefs, I think this is just a holdover from your boxer days - why do you need the extra leg fabric?
The only thing holding you back is the women/aesthetics: most still think briefs are weird.
detourne@reddit
Need the extra leg fabric to prevent chafing or accidentally falling out of my underwear.

So my best friend is gay and in my 20s I hung out in the gay parts of town with him. I don’t remember exactly when but we were walking by a stripper store? I don’t know if there’s an actual word for it. But he was saying how he just got these breifs and they made his dick look big. I went in an got some to try they were awesome. I was hooked.
I’m a big burly tattooed straight man that still wears “gay” underwear today. My wife always tells me how nice my package looks whenever I’m just walking around in my undies. I feel like all the softness and stretch came out of the gay brands.
GravityWorship@reddit
Drop your brands.
n8_S@reddit
Right now it’s mostly krackatoa. They are super comfy. I rock the briefs and thongs.
GravityWorship@reddit
Me too. I caught similar vibes 😅. Don't go to their NSFW subreddit if you want to avoid dongs.
I love their drawers but I am looking for something better for cycling. Team "No Chamois", need something that handles sweating better.

Klutzy_Word_6812@reddit
I went directly from briefs to boxer-briefs. I remember that some came as a free pair in a package of briefs my mom got me. I tried them and never wanted to wear anything g else. So I didn’t.
edasto42@reddit
This timeline OP puts out I’ve found to be unique to a lot of straight Americans. There’s a weird connotation about wearing briefs that many non straight and non American cultures don’t have. Some think it comes down to a theorized underlying body anxiety straight American men have thanks to a lot of marketing in the 80’s and 90’s. Boxers and boxer briefs were marketed as ‘adult’ choices. Add to that the need to fit in, so if all your buddies in the locker room are wearing them, and you’re not, then it’s time for ridicule.
Cisru711@reddit
I think it's more meeting women's expectations. As male models were pictured in fashionable boxers and boxer briefs, you didn't want to ruin the mood undressing to reveal something uncool. But, you're correct up to your last sentence.
edasto42@reddit
Like I said-marketing. Straight American men were marketed to in a way to make this seem like it’s a norm. There’s been lots of discussions recently especially on how most marketing is done for the male gaze.
When Marky Mark was doing his CK thing it was for both briefs and boxer briefs, marketing them as a ‘bad boy’ brand. This marketing wasn’t just for straight women.
And historically, American men are often very prudish about their bodies as shown by common everyday fashion. Straight American men are taught to avoid anything that can be read as soft, expressive, body conscious, or possibly effeminate. It’s one of the reasons cargo shorts won’t die either.
Cisru711@reddit
Cargo shorts are practical as hell if you have kids. I can't count the amount of times I needed them to store some toy my daughter dropped.
In high school gym class in 92-93, all us freshman and sophmore boys were in white briefs. By college in 96, 95% were wearing boxers. (I was in an all male dorm)

KdawgEdog@reddit
I love trunks, I've been using them for 15 years. But they are hard to find. Recently I switched to brief pouch, they kinda look like a thong in the front. I've learned I do not like my underwear to touch my thighs. When I switch back to the trunks it is irritating af

jtmag1@reddit
It's like halfway between a brief and a boxer brief. It goes down each leg, but just not as far.
I'm not sure what a woman's boy-cut is.
4luminate@reddit
Women’s boy-cut (boyshorts) is the best damn thing ever.
On a woman.
In my opinion.

I was an athlete and never understood boxers. I needed support. Boxer briefs are too hot.
s0urgrapes_@reddit
I’ve gotta be honest here. I have never, not once, tried on a pair of boxer briefs. I started wearing boxers at some point in middle school I think and I’m still wearing boxers into my 40’s. Never had a girlfriend complain throughout the years or suggest anything different. I’m married now with a couple of kids and still, wife has never mentioned anything different. I buy my son who’s in high school Calvin Klein boxer briefs because that’s what he likes though.
thatsnotideal1@reddit
I don’t understand the appeal of boxer briefs, they have the compressive discomfort of briefs, nonsensical legs that bunch up (but don’t fall back down like boxers), and the main appeal is “support” for my bits that, apologies if this is over sharing, are physically attached to my body and do not require 3rd party support. Boxers all day
adumant@reddit
How do people wear them and keep the legs down? The few times I’ve tried they would ride up the entire time. I have always had big thighs but still.

And I need look no further than men's clothing and hairstyling in the 1970s to litigate my point lol.

I’m a woman who prefers boy-cut or boxer-briefs. Thanks for asking.

Why is it so hard to find boxer briefs that aren’t made of that bullshit moisture wicking material that make a couple stray drops run down your leg. Wtf was wrong with the cotton/polyester shit we had forever.
Budgiejen@reddit
So my kid. Always wore tightie-whites. Went to visit my dad for a few days and apparently needed more/new underwear. My dad wasn’t sure what to get him, so he got boxer briefs.
So he was wearing those for awhile and he was maybe a pre-teen when I asked him what kind of underwear he wanted, since I was going to buy him some. He asked what his choices were and I was like, “well, the briefs like you used to wear, the boxer briefs like grandpa got you, or boxers.” “What are boxers?” So I explain them to him, something like, “they’re like the boxer briefs but a looser fit, kind of like shorts.” And his face lit up and he shouts, “BOXERS!” And I assume he probably still wears them.

I've done exactly as you posted. Currently wearing some synthetic boxer briefs with the extra pouch in the front to keep everything from bouncing around too much.

My fiancé is obsessed with Saxx lol.

boxers at home, let them swing low. Work I’d different

Same progression
A few years ago I treated myself to NICE boxer briefs. Specifically Krakatoa or Manmade
SubBass49Tees@reddit
Kid: tighty whities
Teen: boxers
Now: boxer briefs
It just sucks because the ones that used to be most comfortable changed their fit or fabric formula, and now they suck, so I'm stuck trying to find a new fave.
The fruit of the loom ones I got are good fabric, but the string in the thigh seam to prevent riding up is very constricting (muscular legs). Ended up cutting the string on all of them.
Tried some 32 Degree ones, but they're synthetic, and not great smell-wise...plus they bunch up.
Others have tight crotch areas, so I have to physically stretch that area of the boxer briefs before putting them on, or they feel too tight "down there."
It sucks.

I did exactly the same things as you. Except I’ve never tried wool.

Briefs as a kid. I'm never going back to that.
Boxers in my late teens once I learned about them.
From about 20-40, I wore nothing but silk or satin boxers every day (cotton reminded me too much of briefs). Someone then mistakenly shipped me some cotton CK boxers and told me to keep them. I tried them on and actually really enjoyed them. Now, I have a nice rotation of silk boxers, cotton boxers, and if I am trying to score points with my wife, I will throw on a pair of CK boxer briefs or the "elephant trunk" thong (scoring points usually means laughter in these cases).

Immediately switched from tighty whiteys to boxers as soon as my boys started growing. I cannot fathom why anyone would ever want their junk compressed into their thighs.
Plus-Pomegranate8045@reddit
Started out with tightie whities but skipped boxers and went straight into boxer briefs.
tryingisbetter@reddit
Kid underwear. PreTeen boxers 40+ boxers.
I've hated both underwear, and briefs since changing.
Positively_Eric@reddit
I too went from whitey tighties as kid and added colors before discovering boxer briefs. In my late 20's I was diagnosed with a varicocele in my left testicle and my doctor recommended briefs with a pouch to cradle my junk.

The exact same progression, but I’ve landed on a very specific model from a brand that I’m not proud of wearing because of who endorses it (sounds like Bro Joegan). They really are the best damn Undies Me ever wore.
edwardturnerlives@reddit
Underoos, tidy whites. 1 week with boxers, boxer briefs for 33 years now.
unicorncholo@reddit
Tighty whities as a kid, boxers ever since.
Weak_Radish966@reddit
Tighty witeys as a kid, boxers from 12 or so on. Never liked boxer briefs even after an ex girlfriend recommended them. Found them super uncomfortable.
