Reflexively braking for a Crown Vic that's clearly a police auction vehicle but you still have that instinct in you š
What's yours?
twolfhawk@reddit
I got two but they ain't oreos
SailNW@reddit
I wanna know why people buy this car and then get mad when you slow down in front of them? Youāre tailgating me? Sir. Thatās a cop car.
cbih@reddit
I just know I've always wanted one of the spotlight things
PurplePenguinCat@reddit
I had a friend in high school in the 90s who randomly put a spotlight on his car. It wasn't an ex cop car. He just wanted the light. š
snuffy_smith_@reddit
He wasnāt, by chance, a hunter?
PurplePenguinCat@reddit
Actually, he wasn't.
Bulky_Pop_8104@reddit
Probably 20+ years ago now, our local police switched over to Impalas (which had very distinct lights). Anyway, a friend bought one and it was probably 50/50 people immediately getting out of the way vs people dropping to 5 below the limit
SailNW@reddit
I donāt get it! Why would you buy a cop car lol!
0peRightBehindYa@reddit
355hp 6.0 liter V8 with a practically unlimited aftermarket, 6 speed auto, rear wheel drive, battle scars, an interior I don't have to worry about, and a beefy electrical system for an amp and subs. What's not to love?
Edgarmustavas@reddit
Ignore the mileage when you buy it and look at the engine hours. They never turn them off so it can run computers, radios, etc and that means it has basically sat in stop and go traffic (equivalent) it while life, which is hard on an engine.
Might be fun to throw some parts at and try and max out hps, but I wouldn't want one as a daily driver.
Especially a Chevrolet, cause their transmissions kinda suck ass.
0peRightBehindYa@reddit
Honestly? I've owned 3 different cop cars and it hasn't made a difference. All three had between 50k-100k and around 5000 idle hours, and all three were rock solid. The first one died when my daughter's dumbass boyfriend wrecked it in the snow. The 2nd one died due to transmission failure (gasp! A 4R75 failing? The hell you say!). And the third one's given me 30,000 trouble free miles so far. The 6L80 is a pretty solid transmission as long as its maintained, and there are plenty of people out there running 550+rwhp on a stock trans.
xrelaht@reddit
Where were they using those as cop cars??
FoofaFighters@reddit
I'm working on wearing my wife down enough to let me pick up an SS. Looks similar to that, and may be the same thing but I'm not sure. Such a beautiful machine.
0peRightBehindYa@reddit
The SS is muuuuuuuch nicer than mine. Also comes with extra power.
jramsi20@reddit
Got my first speeding ticket driving my dads ss, it felt and sounded exactly the same at 100 as it did at 45
0peRightBehindYa@reddit
The Caprice ain't much different. I can easily be touching triple digits at the end of most on-ramps.
_Xee@reddit
Gas mileage?
0peRightBehindYa@reddit
21mpg with mixed rural and around town on 89, but that drops to around 15mpg with E85.
_Xee@reddit
Nice, gotta love that.
If you're selling gas, that is ;)
0peRightBehindYa@reddit
I'm sure it can do better, but I like the giggly feeling I get in my tummy when I accelerate hard from a stop.

Moist_Rule9623@reddit
The Crown Victoria is already one of the most reliable cars ever made in America, and then the P71 police package is upgraded and reinforced over and above that. (Why yes I am kind of a fanboy for these cars, thanks for asking!)
ThatGhoulAva@reddit
I had a boyfriend at the time do this. I was SO MAD this is what he came back with: a 2002 Crown Vic Des Plaines K9 car with no back seat. It still had the spot light too. God, it was an electrical nightmare when there was a taillight short but for $500 it was a steal.
I won't lie - this thing had balls to spare, and we got everywhere early bc everyone would slow down and get out of our way. But I couldn't admit that to him. To this day, my story is that I'm still mad.
Disastrous_Bother173@reddit
It was a tank! My parents allowed me to go drive alone as a teen because of that car.
Illustrious_You_6210@reddit
Reason 1: they can be pretty cheap at auction
Reason 2: they were usually maintained pretty well while in use
Reason 3: they've got a cop engine, cop tires, cop suspension. And if it was an interceptor, they drive like a bat out of hell.
Reason 4(the most important reason): you want to watch random people slow down/move when you're driving.
MajorMiners469@reddit
It's the interceptor V8 engine. Just a long life beast of a machine.
Bulky_Pop_8104@reddit
He definitely thought it was a really fun idea until he didnāt. The novelty wore off super fast
JPhrog@reddit
I bought one for $200 from a police auction some years ago. Took it to the car wash to wash and vacuum. Found $700 inside one of the hidden driver seat compartment in the front of the seat! I had the Crown Vic for a couple months before I got tired of it and sold it to some teen for $1700! š It was a fun and fast novelty but short lived interest.
avalonfaith@reddit
That's what's up! Police auctions, whether their own cars or the perp cars can be full of wonderful lucrative surprises.
JPhrog@reddit
Glad it was money (probably drug money) instead of drugs lol. I pretty much got paid to buy the car and then some when I sold it later!
avalonfaith@reddit
Making it rain!
sarabridge78@reddit
Lol, that's like back in the early 2000's a roommate of mine used his older sister who has downs syndrome as an excuse to get an easy cell phone number. It didn't matter to him that his sister actually had a fear of phones and would never, NEVER have called him. He ended up getting (XXX)655-5555. He only had it for a few months before he went back in and got a new number. The amount of butt dials he got(back then on cell phones you didn't have to put in the area code) and little kids calling and babbling away on the line after picking up their home landlines and pushing numbers was too much. The rest of us thought it was pure justice, and hilarious. I will say, it was an easy number to remember.
Bulky_Pop_8104@reddit
lol going off the rails a bit here, but by ādumb luckā around that same time I got what I thought was an incredibly awesome new number - (xxx) 233-7733 - super easy right?
It previously belonged to a recently closed pizza placeā¦.
ryguymcsly@reddit
They're really cheap at auction. They all have 300k miles on them but they're typically well-maintained except the interiors which are shot to hell. They suck on fuel economy but you can drive them like you stole them pretty much all the time and they'll handle it just fine until they break catastrophically and the repair bill is more than you spent on the auction cop car. Then you go buy another auction cop car.
Hillbillygeek1981@reddit
It's a perfect combination of "selling cheap at auction" and "performance engine with no governor." My wife's F150 has an old police Crown Vic engine in it for a reason, lol.
Mind you, anything resembling the stereotypical law enforcement vibe will have people slowing down or pulling over. My daily is a black 2009 Suburban and I get the same nonsense on the interstate, and I'm relatively certain I've had troopers ignore me blowing past them at an easy 20 over the speed limit before under the assumption it's an unmarked, nevermind that the only agencies buying Chevy for like two decades have been limited numbers of FBI, DEA and other feds.
avalonfaith@reddit
I was gonna say, a suburban??? Haha! I love it though. When I had a fusion, it was right when they just came out. They were marketing to all the big companies and coppers, gvmt, etc., so in my area I had the same reactions. And mine was a dark blue company car. Fresh off the boat, then train to me with 3 miles on it. Now I'm getting rambling and nostalgic....k
sick_of-it-all@reddit
Cop cars come with special cop car 'packages". Like beefed up engine, brakes, suspension. All kinds of cool shit. So if you can get one cheap, hell yeah.
BobSki778@reddit
I mean, by the time you get it, itās probably been beat to hell by the officers driving it, and those brakes, suspension, and such probably need to be replaced or have significant service, but yeah, it was definitely ātop of the lineā when new.
Negative-Wrap95@reddit

It literally sounds like the dumbest thing, now that I explain it š
avalonfaith@reddit
OK! Thank you, that makes so much more sense than what I was imagining. I was thinking it involved pinching someone's else's car and just couldn't see how that could possibly happen. š
TinyDogGuy@reddit

Most of the cars from our generation were terrible. Most of the engines had head gasket issues. Everything ford made had front end issues, and the red paint peeled within a few years. gurnard@reddit
Sounds like hell.
My car is from 2010, and I think that might be peak for cars in general. All the modernity is in the materials and manufacturing - solid car but light enough that a 4-cyl slams you back in your seat like an old v8. Keeps on trucking with minimal maintenance, much of which can be done at home.
But old enough that the car doesn't have opinions. All its computing power goes to the fuel injection and ignition timings so I can throw whatever fuel in it and it'll drive just the same.
Hillbillygeek1981@reddit
We're old enough to remember what it was like keeping a shitbox older than we were running on little more than speaker wire, starting fluid and enough duct tape and stolen road signs to keep the body together though, lol.
Kids these days are screwed when it comes to cobbling together a first car when a marketplace beater is $8000 and requires a $300 alternator, $700 ECM and a dealership reprogramming session to even get it pulled onto a rollback.
