I'm already close to 1 year experience, when do I see $1500/week come in my bank account after tax?
Posted by East_Indication_7816@reddit | Truckers | View on Reddit | 125 comments
I only see $1000/week go in . Also what are good companies that pay well for those with 1 year experience?
machao92@reddit
You can trade a job for another but honestly this is a gambling game. Like all companies except you could get paid more and find yourself stuck with the Russians and running super illegal until you leave and then they refuse to pay your last check lol. Or you could find a company that pays good but shit equipment. Take everything with a grain of salt and find what suits you
Fresh_Historian_2851@reddit
I grown to the realization that I'll never crack 1.5k net. I have cracked 2.2K gross and haven't touched 1.5k
LyubviMashina93@reddit
What!? You're grossing 2.2k and getting taxed over $700??
JumpingQuarks@reddit
Probably child support
Fresh_Historian_2851@reddit
California taxes are a bitch
PlymouthSea@reddit
Yup, it was the worst part about last mile. So much OT during peak season, but taxes just yoinked it.
No_Relationship_3077@reddit
Your taxes must be crazy. I crack over 2k gross one week and my check was definitely over 1.5k after taxes. It’s was just that week tho
Immediate_Regular@reddit
Are you hauling anything specialized or just straight dry van?
overcrispy@reddit
Where do you live that 2.2k gross isn’t 1.5 net?!
SovereignOfSelf7@reddit
California X child support
TruckinTuba@reddit
So, I've never gotten this as weekly pay, but I once had a net of over 6k for a twice monthly check
Aggravating-Meal4984@reddit
Dollar Tree account.
Immediate_Regular@reddit
This dude hits shit. If this jackass has to go to retail locations he's going to kill people.
Aggravating-Meal4984@reddit
Im an accident free driver , year and a half exp
Immediate_Regular@reddit
I'm not talking about you, I'm talking about the dumbass OP. That dude hits shit and drives off then whined here when he caught points over it and had little tantrums when he got ripped up by other drivers here.
He's an absolute moron.
InfiniteHedgehog5913@reddit
As someone who did Werner Dollar Freight running all three dollar accounts before coming local running P&D LTL I can attest that I and nearly everybody with half a brain cell who runs either dollar freight or P&d can back enormously better than any OTR dock hitter
Immediate_Regular@reddit
This clown smacked a stationary object then drove off then came here and got salty when his whines about catching a ticket and points wasn't met with a chorus of commiseration.
P&D is going to make you either an expert at backing in places trucks really shouldn't be or a massive insurance liability.
He's not going to become a pro.
Aggravating-Meal4984@reddit
I make 1750 to 2100 a week. Have had checks as high as 2700 when bonuses come around
Kkalemauser@reddit
LTL. Get seniority. I gross $2100 a week on just my run. Add in dock time at $37 an hour and I try to get at least 10 hours on the dock.
I recommend Estes, XPO, Saia, OD. I work at CT.
GroundbreakingSir386@reddit
This^ XPO gave us a raise this year to $40 an hr and on the west coast we get overtime after 8 hrs worked. We mainly drive a pup trailer 70% of the time and it’s the easiest money. Also might have to work the dock but you’re usually getting overtime at that point.
Conversation_Which@reddit
What’s the requirements?
LilFunyunz@reddit
Is doc work like that forklift only or do you have to be able to physically lift and move shit all the time?
thxby@reddit
Haha you will have to get off your forklift every time you load or unload a piece of freight because the way they load trailers is about as dumb as you can imagine. You're either recouping freight or strapping frieght every few minutes that will eventually fall off the shelf in route and have to be recouped by the next guy.
thxby@reddit
They rarely let drivers get overtime. 8 hours on dock is impossible because each terminal is around 5 or less hours apart. So you drive around 10 hours and get 4 hours on dock.
Lane8323@reddit
Is XPO union? I never know which trucking companies are organized and which aren’t outside of the main Teamsters ones
CMDR-L@reddit
No. No union. Worked there for 5 years. So unless some areas have different setting, but i doubt it.
GroundbreakingSir386@reddit
Conway before XPO was. They kept some union stuff. Fedex freight is also Overtime after 8 hrs.
No_Relationship_3077@reddit
I think he said after taxes
Kkalemauser@reddit
Right. With taxes I bring home $1600.
I figured people would do the math and know I’m above the $1500 OP said he wanted to make.
No_Relationship_3077@reddit
Nobody can know your taxes except you
Vanstrucker2222@reddit
How much per mile?
Kkalemauser@reddit
.78 per mile with 8 years of seniority. The other better LTL companies start out at .80 per mile or $38 an hour Starting.
So I try to push people to Estes and OD.
FortuneMurky19@reddit
I agree with LTL but dock work sucks. Find one that has enough freight to move that you don't have to dock work. Unless of course you enjoy driving a forklift. .
Embarrassed-Win9437@reddit
This sounds so perfect for me, I was driving forklift before a semi and genuinely loved it. Would love to do both if it paid more. What companies do that??
Th3_Gh0st_0f_Y0u@reddit
I work at Lowes and when I'm not driving I'm usually on a forklift of some sort, be it my Moffett or one of the store lifts. Pay isn't great though
325trucking@reddit
My cousin works for a subcontractor to Lowe's, they do deliveries with a straight truck and a Moffett.
$50/stop, 10 stops a day. He only does part time so I don't know how much work they have and if they just stack it all for the weekend, but $500/day sounds nice.
My overtime pays more than that so I just go in for an extra day if I want the money, but if I didn't have unlimited overtime I'd probably go do deliveries too.
Th3_Gh0st_0f_Y0u@reddit
I do that but it's still in house where I'm at, so I get overtime when my hours go over and I also get to work in the store when the deliveries aren't busy. And I don't have to share my truck, I assume the third party slip seats.
andycap123@reddit
Look for ABF city driver positions near you. Union work. You will be working mainly dock for the first few years and can fill in for off drivers or extra driving work, then can jump on a driving bid later on if you choose.
FortuneMurky19@reddit
Ltl market is pretty tight right now. Not much hiring. You may have to be patient. Best of luck to you.
FortuneMurky19@reddit
Xpo is probably your best bet for good pay and forklift required.
GroundbreakingSir386@reddit
I like dock work. I just don’t like working past 9pm at night since that’s when FAC gets there and it’s a mess with 30+ dock workers and everyone’s super aggressive it ain’t fun anymore just stressful af.
mr-doctor2u@reddit
I mean i averaged $2,200/week after tax my first year and in year 3 I'm doing $3,000. The trick? Stay away from OTR
SanPaladin07@reddit
Why is better to stay away from OTR?
robexib@reddit
Anything that pays by the mile is a job that expects you to work for free several hours a day, and OTR work is especially bad about it outside of maybe railroad work.
SanPaladin07@reddit
Im doing OTR teaming what u think
robexib@reddit
You're still only effectively paid when you're driving. Sure, you're able to move more efficiently with two people, but the fact that you're still only making money when the truck is moving is still true.
mr-doctor2u@reddit
Because there is not enough money to go around. To many fingers in the money pie and to much competition.
crapslock@reddit
Damn. What type of trucking? I’m in year 2 and I’m only doing $1500 after tax at an LTL. All days have to be 12 hours so if your line haul run is done within say 11 hours you need to put in at least 1 hour of dock work before you can go home. I like the industry in general and I’m pretty happy with it.
mr-doctor2u@reddit
Oilfield now i just haul crude.
crapslock@reddit
Ok cool. I’m in Ohio and there are quite a few oil patches in the Eastern side of the state. I might explore some opportunities. Thanks for the reply.
Beautiful-Slice166@reddit
I crack 1.5 - 2 k doing hazmat team driving as company, basically just run back and forth across 10 and 40 and home weekends is ussually 4-8 stops though
CaliThunder559@reddit
I worked with Swift my 1st 6 months. Checks were 600 to 800 net
I went to another company at my 6 month mark. So far I've had 2 paychecks. First was 1480ish net and the second was 1530ish.
The new company is dedicated though and I run recaps for 11 days and home 3... with Swift id do a reset once a week and out 3 weeks and home 3.
Swift was nice for their trucks and having terminals everywhere to stop at but not worth making half
East_Indication_7816@reddit (OP)
I’m local . Are there locals that do that or I have to go OTR?
No_Relationship_3077@reddit
You can find a local that does that probably need more experience or just the right timing. Also depends on where you live. I live in Texas and while I have been grossing over 1.5 a week my net is more like 1100. But I just started this job not to long ago and haven’t gotten my pay raise. Walmart will definitely get you that if you can get a job there. Other options are local hazmat
CaliThunder559@reddit
Well im regional out of California. Prob with atleast 6 months experience otr or regional. My company is out of so cal and they have local down there.
My dedicated account basically only sends me through cali and oregon
king_rootin_tootin@reddit
I know a guy who has a year and a half experience and he went to a flatbed company. He says his take home pay is a little less than 2k a week. But he works for and they keep him busy.
weaponized_autism265@reddit
When you specialize your experience. Regular reefer, dryvan, and flatbed drivers are a dime a dozen. Get your endorsement or go LTL. I had to go into hauling cows to get $2200 a week because there’s no LTL companies where I’m from and I don’t like the idea of haul fuel because I’ve seen the retards we work around and I don’t want Sandu to rear end me and reduce me to atoms. But if you want to make the money get away from OTR and basic ass reefer, dryvan, and flatbed.
Requettie@reddit
look at HAZMAT Tanker
Whitehoneybun666@reddit
When u get away from the mega u work for
Mountindewme@reddit
Get best of both worlds be home daily and get on with a fuel company . Depending on where you live there hiring more than likely and with the company I work for you can get OT but there starting to Crack down on that. Also I'd look into the big truck stop company's pilot and loves . But mom and pop will more than likely pay more ..
East_Indication_7816@reddit (OP)
Yeah and the risk of death and health consequences like cancer is not worth any amount.
Lopsided-Bath-8404@reddit
Just as soon as you quit western express or Schneider lol
Impressive-Menu8966@reddit
I work under Schneider and gross 1600 ish. Not bad for less than 30 days of experience IMO.
SexMachine666@reddit
2 years is the sweet spot. That's when your options are pretty much wide open to any company that you're qualified to work for (i.e., Hazmat, Tanker, etc.) Definitely get out of Dry Van because unless you're hauling multi-stop four-wheelers to the middle of nowhere, you're never going to hit your potential. Flatbed, Stepdeck and Reefer are all cleaning up right now.
I haven't made less than $1500 since after my second year. My best week was $4000 net as a driver but I busted my ass for it.
theboywthagreenscarf@reddit
Hazmat tanker. My cousin clears 4k net a week easily.
Flavoade@reddit
Is that the average for Hazmat or is he working a lot of hours?
theboywthagreenscarf@reddit
Owner Operator. He works 4-5 days is home for the weekends. Doubt it’s the average, it’s just a good company. Slay Transportation.
PossibleUse9198@reddit
Making 4k a week as an O/O is wayyyyyy different making 4k a week as an employee though.
theboywthagreenscarf@reddit
Yea but I’m talking net not gross. But yea always have to put aside for eventual repairs. I’m about to replace a camshaft, not fun.
AndromedanPrince@reddit
abdolutely not the average
Immediate_Regular@reddit
Not even close and I'd want to see pay stubs from a company driver claiming it or the O/O's books.
DreamsServedSoft@reddit
always wack to me, no matter the industry, every Redditor surpasses the median by 3-4x
robexib@reddit
Get out of dry van. Get into something more specialised. That's where the money is. LTL, tanker, flatbed, grain, plenty of options.
humpthedog@reddit
You better be putting a minimum of 8 percent into a 401k or Roth.
East_Indication_7816@reddit (OP)
I am already making extra $1k/week just trading stocks
Immediate_Regular@reddit
Sure you are. Why not get out of this industry since you're not cut out for it and just play the markets? That way when you fuck that up you're not likely to hurt or kill other people.
East_Indication_7816@reddit (OP)
Are you salty ? Because i drive for fun . Poor you still working as hard when I just trade stocks while waiting on the load and make $1000/week .
Immediate_Regular@reddit
Prove it.
Brightone13@reddit
Gd hair tests are holding me back cause i smoke a little weed here and there it's like really aggravating and i just wanna smoke on a weekend once in a while and most trucking day jobs require hair testing... Just why though, you can drink all you want but don't you dare smoke... Ugh grrr.
Immediate_Regular@reddit
Give up the weed if you want to come out on the road.
LyubviMashina93@reddit
Good truckers guzzle whiskey like God intended but I'll be damned if some pot smoking hippy hauls my freight!
overcrispy@reddit
Priorities…
possibly_lost45@reddit
How log do you wanna stay out? My companies otr guys gross 2400 to 2600 a week. You'll easily take home 1500.
opinionated_penguin@reddit
Who with?
possibly_lost45@reddit
Dick Lavy Trucking
derpmcturd@reddit
I call them Dick Gravy
possibly_lost45@reddit
I do as well all the way to the bank. I run local for em now and it's the easiest money I evef made.
Hexum311add@reddit
I just hit a year with a mega, does this company have an Atlanta location ?
possibly_lost45@reddit
No but we haul freight into Atlanta.
opinionated_penguin@reddit
Bummer, I’m out of Houston and looks like they might not hire out of that region based on website
possibly_lost45@reddit
We have customer runs that go in and out of Houston,Beaumont, San Antonio, Laredo, Dallas, austin. I use to go to Houston often.
opinionated_penguin@reddit
Yea I saw a route mentioning Ohio to Dallas and back on website. I rarely take home time regardless so maybe I’ll give them a call. Pretty sure I’ve seen a bunch of their trailers at Belden Wire in Richmond, IN
possibly_lost45@reddit
Yes you have. You must be with Herman. We hail alot of their freight. It's a good company. Your home time load would be a deceuninck load out of Monroe Ohio for Monday morning deliver at a spot out off 99 around Katy. We have a few others that go go inside the beltway.
Significant_Ad5335@reddit
You got another year for most OTR companys. Go with smaller company's that will pay you around 65 cpm run 5 days with 2-3 days off. They are out there. Youll run 3200 to 3500 in 5 to 5.5 days then back home 2 days off then back at it.
Capital-Sorbet652@reddit
Home daily driver that made $69,700 gross last year…yall are making me feel bad now 😭thought I was doing good for someone with 1.5 years experience
Environmental-Pear40@reddit
Ah, it's common with Shaffer, the reefer division of Crete, but you need 2 years. I'm also job hunting at the moment and everything I've seen has a 2-year minimum. Though, I'm looking to go to a smaller carrier. Currently leaning pretty heavily on just taking a pay cut for a company that refuses to go to the Northeast, bit of burnout.
Honestly, You can probably get a decent pay bump by transitioning to either reefer or flatbed. I still haven't figured out why reefer pays more when it's basically the same as dry van, though. More lives is my best guess.
East_Indication_7816@reddit (OP)
Reefer load is higher pay because it’s for loads That require a certain temp or to protect it from the external cold like finished wood .
Mirindemgainz@reddit
I got hired a year in at beer and I net 1500 a week when’s it’s slow and summer I’ll net prob 2200 a week
jeyzur@reddit
Whaddya mean by “beer”?
Mirindemgainz@reddit
Distribute beer Coors
jeyzur@reddit
Ahhh cool
Quiet_Molasses_3362@reddit
Hahhah, I'm year 20+ and those 1500k week nets are rare
FlappyJ1979@reddit
30 year myself and they are few and far between, I do max out my retirement, but the taxes kill me and so does the medical insurance. I net about 40% of my gross pay
RoamingNomadSoul@reddit
I agree
DonBoy30@reddit
With health insurance how it is, and how much the carriers seem to hate truckers, if you have more than 1 kid and married, you’ll have to go LTL or hazmat and hustle.
Voxicles@reddit
My partner and I net $1450 weekly (after insurance and 401k contributions) each, working 3 and a half days out, 3 and a half days at home (depending on weather). Dedicated Linehaul route with FXG. We’ve got green folks that make more staying out a day or two longer, but teams isn’t for everyone.
Made a lot more when I was training new drivers, but I sleep better these days.
ArtisticAd9404@reddit
Took me about 5 years to consistently crack $100k a year. I don’t advertise my company for a multitude of reasons, but some in ny region that ive heard lots of good about are Brenny Transportstion in St Joseph, MN, and Hayes Transport in Verona, WI. I’ve never worked for either, but the people I’ve spoken to about them companies have seemed happy with their jobs.
TruckinTuba@reddit
I was doing over $100k my second year, but I was doing fuel in UT, lots of jobs out there that will pay 6 figures if you have 2 years
Immediate_Regular@reddit
That sweet home daily local gig you supposedly have not working out for you champ?
Here's a crazy idea for your dumb ass based on your previous posts: Stop hitting stuff and running away, stop hanging crap in your truck that obscures your view, and stop using narcotics/alcohol (also don't rinse and reuse condoms you disgusting oxygen thief).
You're either an idiot or a troll. If you're actually in this industry you're a menace and need to leave.
kingsnow18@reddit
I'm working OTR Conestoga getting 28% as a W2 (I think is 33% for 1099) on my best week I took home $2,491 after tax. Worst week $1,500. I can show you proof. PM for more info.
JumpingQuarks@reddit
Literally haven't worked for a company that I didn't bring home over 1500 average.
InsertCoinsToBegin@reddit
Food service, fuel, doubles. 2000+ a week
RackingUpTheMiles@reddit
Get on the right fleet. Whether that's a specialty account like Walmart or Target or something like a regional route. I do northeast regional and I'm at $0.80 cpm at like 6 months solo out of training. The only downside is it's hard and fast unlike the slower pace of OTR.
AcanthocephalaNew791@reddit
Lol. This is funny. Try dedicated PODS otr. Nothing is slow when you get 10 stop loads.
RebelTvshka@reddit
What state?
CapitanPino@reddit
Net is so subjective to each person. Gross is more objective.
I am at Crete doing dry van regional and I have grossed 75k in the last 11 months.
Realchille@reddit
I started with Crete 6 months ago and in the first three I cracked 30k after tax, I’m also on the dry van side I stay out 90 days at a time and I run about 3300 a week on average it’s great
ConsciousAwareness69@reddit
Kevin? Tracy? Is that you? 😂
CapitanPino@reddit
Nah. I also willingly share my stubz.
Little-Insurance-302@reddit
So check this out. 1 year class A imo is very reasonable. I work in Sanitation and we got drivers making $27+ with OT, average 60 hours weekly.
I’d say your best shot at making 1500 take home CONSISTENTLY is Fuel, Sanitation, Food Delivery. Other ones I’ve heard are LTL.
This is not accurate but estimated and can be very close.
In states with No State Tax you can multiply your expected gross by .8 to determine a weekly take home amount.
In states with State Tax multiple estimated gross by .74 to determine estimated take home. States with even higher state tax like CA or NY id multiply by .65
Princetrix@reddit
It’s easier to calculate gross because net varies by state and your relationship status
Auquaholic@reddit
Yeah, what would it take gross pay wise for him to reach the net pay (in your bank) that he desires.
chico-dust@reddit
Varies by state, withholdings, filing status etc like bro just said.
PlsCheckThisBush@reddit
Union driveaway here. I can net that here in Ohio without issue, the problem is you always trade that time for money. I can be gone 24/7/365 and clear 150-200k+, or I can be home a day or two a week and make 90-120k and see my family a little more.
I would highly recommend LTL if you want a more consistent decent paycheck and to be home a bit more. Food service is another option if you’re willing to work your body and driving is a more minor part of the job but it’s not for everyone.
jmzstl@reddit
When you keep your record clean and put in the effort to find those jobs.
