Confession: I don’t know how to make a post on Instagram
Posted by meldiane81@reddit | Xennials | View on Reddit | 76 comments
I went to Instagram to tag one of my favorite comedians who’s on Smosh. That’s the only way to do it as far as I know and I refuse to go to X.
I went in there and I didn’t even know where to begin. I closed the app and told myself it wasn’t worth it.
I feel myself aging more and more every day.
Salty-Tea6815@reddit
Don’t feel bad, I’m not even on Instagram!!
a_solid_6@reddit
Same. Reddit is the closest thing I have to social media. And I think the only reason I can get into reddit is because it's made for actual conversation with people who share your interests. Not just people reacting to carefully curated bits and pieces of other people's lives. Reddit certainly has its flaws, and god help you if you stumble into the wrong back alley of the platform. 😬 But at least there's potential for meaningful engagement and your comments don't get hidden/scrubbed at the platform's discretion.
Salty-Tea6815@reddit
You are a hidden gem, a sane and logical person on the internet!!!
BarrelFullOfWeasels@reddit
Same. Everything I hear makes me think it's designed primarily to profit off of magnifying people's self-esteem issues. Screw that.
One of my biggest "back in my day" gripes is that interacting with people online was so much better before profit-maximizing algorithms got involved.
Salty-Tea6815@reddit
I just find most of the social media apps/sites to be unnecessary for me. If I don’t care enough about these people to actually speak to them irl to update them about what’s going on with me then why on earth would I want to put time into posting it all for them to look at and pass their judgement on??!! Sites like Reddit and quora I use more for informative or entertainment purposes so it can be useful or fun, but the insta, Facebook, etc just a waste of time and like you said, damaging to too many people’s mental health.
IdioticPrototype@reddit
Not having an 'Insta' is a badge of honor, in my opinion.
FETTACH@reddit
Haven't been on Instagram since 2015!
BarrelFullOfWeasels@reddit
👏🎉

FETTACH@reddit
Felt good, nay, feels good.
nnnope1@reddit
The Instagram UI is hot garbage.
RedSolez@reddit
I have an account purely to stalk others. Their UI is so awful I don't make any posts; nothing is intuitive.
Facebook has many problems but at least it's been user friendly for the 22 years I've been on it 😂
Suitable-Peanut@reddit
I feel the exact opposite way. I have a fake Facebook page just to check the marketplace every once in awhile and it's such hot garbage to try and post or navigate. And it's 100% filled with AI, fake news, fake profiles and porn.
Instagram you just press the little plus sign on your avatar and you can post a picture or story from your camera roll. Couldn't be simpler.
nnnope1@reddit
Agree on all counts
lordskulldragon@reddit
That's not really something to brag about, especially the simplicity of it. We're the connecting generation. It's as bad as the boomers that refuse to learn how to set their VCR clocks.
thesmallprints@reddit
Weird, is there a whole section of xennials who just never spent time on computers growing up? I have no issues navigating any social media platform, they’re not difficult, and I was born in ‘83. And honestly, it’s not like Instagram wasn’t around when we were in our 20’s (I’ve had my account since 2010, when it first came about)
WendyPortledge@reddit
I’m with you. 83 and I believe we were the first generation on top of social media. The first with Facebook, then to Instagram. Yet a few of us completely missed it.
meldiane81@reddit (OP)
I really think that two years makes a difference. I was born in 81.
thesmallprints@reddit
Not really. I have friends up to four years older than me who have no issue figuring out technology old or new.
meldiane81@reddit (OP)
Then I guess it depends on hobbies. I was never behind a computer until I was working. Yes we had some at home but I was always so busy outside at the house.
thesmallprints@reddit
You didn’t have computer classes in middle/high school? College? Find it hard to believe you were never behind one until you were working lol
Meh, whatevs. It’s dumb anymore haha
WendyPortledge@reddit
Instagram is my home. It’s my last social media.
Negative-Wrap95@reddit
You're not alone. I left Xitter shortly after Elmo bought it.
While Tom was my friend, beyond that the only other social media I've bothered with is Reddit.
I simply don't care to be involved with them.
MundaneHuckleberry58@reddit
Don’t worry I don’t know what Smosh is!
Ishvale@reddit
I have exactly one post on there. It was the Parthenon in Nashville. Not only do I not remember how I did it, but I don't recall the date (early 10s somewhere).
SoTiredYouDig@reddit
I’m going to go against the grain here. I find Instagram very valuable as an artist. I was very late to the Instagram game, but I don’t quite understand all the friction here.
But I can’t understate how important it is to understand how algorithms work. Most social media use several algorithms in tandem. It’s not just one big one that controls an entire platform. You can use it to view what you want to see more than I think people realize. And it’s important to have boundaries and limit the amount of time. But I am not in the mindset that it’s some kind of flex to say “I don’t use it”. Some people rely on them for business, marketing, or niche groups that sadly don’t exist elsewhere.
anOvenofWitches@reddit
No Zuckerbook. No Xitter.
If absolutely necessary?: 2 Dixie cups and a string.
cbih@reddit
I decided I didn't like how social media made me feel during the MySpace and LiveJournal days. I've kept it up all these years because when I see my friends and family, we have shit to talk about since I don't watch their lives online.
catsoncrack420@reddit
You're tagging, promoting someone and not even getting paid to do so. I think you saved yourself from online slavery labor.
Lucky_Louch@reddit
I'm proud to say I've never used Instagram, Twitter or Tic Tok. I had a FB when it first came out but it couldn't hold a candle to myspace so I dropped it.
alvinofdiaspar@reddit
It is useful for certain things but it’s inundated with lifestyle influencers and genAI garbage.
meldiane81@reddit (OP)
Happy cake day!!
Connallthemac@reddit
Why the hell does anyone want to post on Instagram any way?!?!
bunchofclowns@reddit
I've never had an Instagram account and it's mildly annoying that musical artists seem to only post their tour dates on there now.
Bulky_Pop_8104@reddit
I’m actually in a touring band, and had to breakdown and start using it for exactly this reason. I’m not the band’s media guy, but I’m still sorta forced to have it for a variety of reasons
Deep-Interest9947@reddit
Same. Never had one but it’s getting really annoying that if I want to know anything anymore the world wants me to have one. I don’t want one.
toomanyusesforaname@reddit
I don't know the difference between a post, a reel, or a story. It's all just a jumble to me.
meldiane81@reddit (OP)
Same!
Difficult_Phase1798@reddit
I don't really use social media because I have friends in real life. And I do not need to convince those friends that my life is more fabulous than it really is.
drifterinthedark423@reddit
I don't really use it either and I don't have friends in real life. So there.
Ok-Criticism6874@reddit
Hey tough guy, reddit is social media
Difficult_Phase1798@reddit
This is a weird response. You ok?
Ok-Criticism6874@reddit
Are you? You have a lot of social media posts for someone with a ton of real life friends.
Difficult_Phase1798@reddit
I'm sorry you're this way and that someone hurt you.
Ok-Criticism6874@reddit
I'm sorry you don't understand what social media is.
cutshop@reddit
Yo mama so fat she in different timezones
Ok-Criticism6874@reddit
Reported, enjoy your ban
cutshop@reddit
LoL...it's a joke to lighten the mood
lightstarangelnyc@reddit
You could just say you prefer not to use social media (including this site) instead of being an 🍑 about it. 🤷🏻♀️
meldiane81@reddit (OP)
Same
Jupitersd2017@reddit
Same as well
drifterinthedark423@reddit
I opened an account to scout out tattoo artists in my city because apparently that's what the kids do now. Plan on deleting it once I decide because fuck Zuckerberg.
nonexistentnight@reddit
I made an Instagram account just to follow my favorite webcomic, Milk & Mocha Bear. Was just the least painful way to stay up to date with their newest posts. Added some other comics and some local venues and restaurants. I don't ever post and avoid the comments section. Also I use a modded APK.
winniecooper73@reddit
What’s Smosh?
meldiane81@reddit (OP)
Online comedy group.
cutshop@reddit
I listen Smosh reads reddit stories each, pretty entertaining
TrustAffectionate966@reddit
I thought it was another social media app.
🧐🤔
cutshop@reddit
I think you are moving into the bigger button phase of life
R0botDreamz@reddit
I never know which text to read first on Twitter. Sometimes it's top, sometimes it's bottom.
TrustAffectionate966@reddit
I don’t have Insta 🧉🦄👌🏽
Babymakerwannabe@reddit
I started an account for my business a couple years ago. It was my first experience with social media (obvs Reddit doesn’t count) and I pretty much see it as an advertising platform. Scrolling it is not enjoyable for me.
thatotherguy57@reddit
Aside from Reddit and Facebook (which I only use for the ongoing meme war with my sister), I don't use social media anymore. As of this week, I have to make work posts on the business's private social media. I could not figure out how to upload a damned picture!
meldiane81@reddit (OP)
Totally the same! I have a small group of people I still go to Facebook for.
thatotherguy57@reddit
Aside from two special circumstance posts, I think it's been five years since I posted anything on Facebook. I remember, and very much miss, when it was college and university only.
whyneedaname77@reddit
I have it for my business. I have it tied to my Facebook business page and post from there. People tell me I should be more active on it. I don't have many followers Instagram. I have over 1000 on Facebook. I hate social media but it does get me work.
trustme1maDR@reddit
My Gen Z niece loves Smosh if that makes you feel any better
meldiane81@reddit (OP)
She has good taste!
anomalocaris_texmex@reddit
Here's my confession. I've never even gone on Instagram. My phones have always desperately wanted me to try, but it seems weird and off putting to me.
5pens@reddit
I cannot figure it out either. A coworker in her late 20s offered to help teach me, but I just couldn't.
meldiane81@reddit (OP)
Too many steps.
edasto42@reddit
I’m gonna recon that you keep trying and to not fall too far behind. It will only get worse. Your neural pathways that are there to process new and novel information are becoming entrenched, thus making new and novel information more work to process. Keeping those pathways active is key to not being left behind as the world changes.
Jupitersd2017@reddit
I tried to use Facebook marketplace the other day for the first time and I just about threw my computer, I was trying to do a listing and turn off the share with friends and that stupid site makes zero sense, nothing is where you would logically think it should be, I felt like I had brain damage tbh. But my mom uses Facebook all the time and can’t figure out her iPhone to save her life so maybe it’s just coded for boomers, I don’t know.
-flaneur-@reddit
I tried instagram. I managed to add people I wanted to 'follow'. And yet my feed was nothing but crap from other people I apparently 'might be interested in'. It's like a big commercial for influencers or something. Ended up deleting it after a couple of weeks.
(And can I just mention - the number of parents who are plastering their young kids all over such forums are insane. I could go further in this particular rant, but I feel you all know what I am implying and where the discussion would head so there is no need to go into that cesspool).
hamburgler26@reddit
I have one follower and follow nobody I think. I installed the app solely to communicate with a friend having a tough time.
Possible-Tangelo9344@reddit
I got irrationally angry reading that first paragraph.
meldiane81@reddit (OP)
Yeah I don’t blame you. I rewrote it like three times and couldn’t get my brain to work enough to write it the way I wanted to.
